[VIDEOS/PICTURES] Shan Masood at Derbyshire - 2022 County Season & T20 Blast

Shan record is awful too with a bigger sample size. Let’s not forget Shan was getting ducks for fun before he was dropped. Imam rightly deserved a go while Azhar just needs to retire.

Shan failed in 2nd and 3rd Test in England and in New Zealand, but many openers have struggled there.

However he averages nearly 40 in Australia and South Africa.

Ramiz made a big drama of not being content unless Pakistan win in Australia and in South Africa so if that's the plan, surely Shan should at least be in the squad.

Shan is already in the squad however rightly he is behind Abdullah lmam and also Abid in the pecking order if he gets fit.

If you had to pick between Imran Butt and Shan Masood who would you opt for? Whatever you think of Masood, he didn't deserve to be replaced by Butt who I can comfortably say wouldn't make the first team of any county side.

Butt was pretty handy in the slips, one of the best Pakistan has ever had in the cordon. Shan has grit but I doubt his ceiling at international level

I bowled Shan out once in the nets at lboro when he was there for a bit to finish up the semester, I pitched it up, he tried to cut too close to the body and the topspin done him; each net mimicked different conditions around the world and we were in the Australia net. I couldn’t believe how rubbish he looked mate, I knew then this guy would turn out to be a bum and how right I was!

Just to be clear, when the English county championship moved to a two division model it was about cutting travel costs, not having a clear first and second tier.

There is promotion and relegation, but it operates more like American sport’s two conference model.

You will often find that top internationals are actually playing for second division counties. And unlike in football, relegated counties rarely find that they are dominant in the second division.

Shan Masood in my opinion should have been skipper from early 2020 until his international retirement, which I would have timed for the end of the 2021-23 World Test Championship cycle.

The only 30+ batsman worth picking was always him - not Azhar Ali or Fawad Alam.

Well done!

We all know what Shan Masood is.

He’s a player of mediocre talent who through hard work and intelligence has made himself just about international quality.

There are many Pakistanis who are more gifted, but their brains are either empty or filled with religion rather than reflection. Whereas Shan identifies his weaknesses and tries to improve them.

Shan is more like Misbah in that he knows how to eke out every drop of his talent. But he’s better than Misbah because Misbah is so conservative, and conservatism prevents progress and development. Ultimately as both captain and coach Misbah was destroyed by his own conservatism.

Junaid, Can you please shed bit more light on why the two tier system came in to being? How is it designed to cut the costs?

Shan Masood, who has 713 County Championship runs this season at an average of 118.83, has been nominated for the PCA's Player of the Month award.

The other nominees are Hampshire's Keith Barker, Yorkshire's Harry Brook and Kent's Ben Compton.

Shan could be on target to match Hicks record off 1,000 runs before end of May in a county season.

He will reach 1,000 runs this season before Azhar Ali reaches 100 for the season.

Derbyshire opening batter Shan Masood, who scored back-to-back double-centuries in April, has been voted the PCA's Player of the Month.

The left-hander, who has represented Pakistan 30 times, finished top of the month’s PCA Most Valuable Player Rankings, registering 129.34 points.

The public were equally impressed with Masood's 713 runs, as he achieved 46% of the vote to secure the award. Designed by PCA partner Mappin & Webb, the elegant trophy was presented to him by the PCA's Vice Chair and Derbyshire teammate, Anuj Dal. Masood pipped Kent's Ben Compton, Hampshire all-rounder Keith Barker and Yorkshire's Harry Brook who received 30%, 14% and 10% of the vote respectively with the four player shortlist selected from the MVP Rankings.

It is Masood's first time playing in the LV= Insurance County Championship and he believes the resources in county cricket provide everything he needs to improve. Masood is taking inspiration from Marnus Labuschagne's first spell at Glamorgan and seeing how that benefited him on the international stage. Which is something Masood hopes to replicate with Pakistan.

"Looking at his career path. Marnus came to Glamorgan, scored about 1,200 runs and then never looked back after getting into that Australian side," said Masood.

"He is a prime example, and these are the things you look for. I saw significant improvements in his batting after his spell here, and there is no surprise that he is world number one right now. I talked to him a lot when he was in Pakistan, and I spoke to him a lot during the match we played against each other recently.

"The county set-up provides everything I need to take my game forward, so it is up to me to make use of the incredible resources."

He is in dream form right. He is killing it in County cricket.
He surely has to be utilised properly in Pakistan team. He is much better than Azhar Ali and fawad awful alam and imam ul haq as well.

He should be given next series to prove himself.

I remember when he was first picked in the tests back in 2013, his FC batting average was 33. Now with hard work and perseverance, it's gone up to almost 39. Back then his technical flaws were easily visible to even the casuals. Now he has become much much better.

Not the biggest fan of Shan, but based on his recent form, he surely deserves to be in the test team for the next series.

Shan Masood scored his third century of a remarkable season, and Sam Conners claimed his second first-class five-wicket haul, as Derbyshire enjoyed a positive second day of the LV= County Championship fixture against Worcestershire.

The Pakistan left-hander made 113 from 132 balls to take his tally to 826 with a possible three more innings to come before the end of the month.

Brooke Guest scored 77 with Derbyshire plundering 172 runs in 36 overs between lunch and tea before Worcestershire hit back in the evening session to leave the home side on 274 for 4, trailing by 94.

Fast bowler Sam Conners took four wickets in the morning to complete a five wicket haul as Worcestershire lost their last five wickets for 42 to be bowled out for 368.

The day had promised much more for the visitors but after subsiding to Conners they felt the full measure of Masood’s elegant strokeplay.

Ed Barnard and Ben Cox represented Worcestershire’s best chance of passing 400 but they both fell in the same over to Conners, Barnard driving loosely to cover and Cox lbw to a ball that looked to be missing leg stump.

Conners made it three in seven balls when he found lift and away movement to remove Josh Baker before nightwatchman Adam Finch, after 22 overs of determined resistance, pulled Ryan Sidebottom to deep backward square.

Sidebottom immediately left the field with a calf injury but Anuj Dal pulled off another stunning catch at point to quickly end the innings and give Conners his fifth wicket.

Derbyshire set the tone for what followed by scoring 30 in seven overs before lunch and the afternoon became one to remember for Masood and one to forget for Worcestershire.

Although they are missing three front-line bowlers through injury, there was no mitigation for the way runs were leaked on both sides of the wickets with the bowlers unable to exert any pressure.

After Billy Godelman got an inside edge onto his leg stump, Masood and Guest cruised along at almost a run-a-ball against indisciplined bowling and increasingly ragged fielding.

Masood’s timing and placement was exemplary but Worcestershire helped him along the way, Barnard spilling a chance at backward point off Ben Gibbon on 67 and then fluffing a run out chance 10 runs later.

Inevitably, he moved to his third century in seven innings from 115 balls but Worcestershire regrouped after tea with Gibbon claiming the prized wicket of Masood during an impressive 11 overs spell from the City End.

The 21-year-old beat Masood’s attempted drive in the first over after the interval, the first of three wickets to fall for only 27 runs in 15 overs which reflected Worcestershire’s improvement.

Guest lost his concentration and edged a big drive at a wide ball from Barnard and Wayne Madsen was lbw trying to work Baker’s left-arm spin to leg.

Gibbons was unlucky not to make further inroads but Leus du Plooy and Luis Reece saw Derbyshire through to the close although Worcestershire have the prospect of a second new ball early on day three.

After the performances of Imam and Abdullah, it's unlikely Shan will get a look-in any time soon.

Shan provides a perfect example of the benefit of networking, building relationships and friendships with coaching and support staff.

Would any other coach apart from Mickey have selected him?

Life is all about maximising your chances and he has grabbed his with both hands.

Derbyshire have named a 13-man squad for their LV= County Championship fixture against Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge, starting tomorrow (11am).

Shan Masood enters the game as the country’s leading run-scorer (826), 174 away from reaching 1,000 first-class runs before the end of May, a feat only managed achieved nine times in the history of the game.

Out for a duck to Stuart Broad.

The poultry farm had begun to get a bit concerned at the prolonged absence of their main supplier. This match will give them considerable comfort.

Derbyshire batter, Shan Masood, has been named Derbyshire Falcons captain ahead of the 2022 Vitality Blast.

Masood, who is the Multan Sultans’ all-time leading Pakistan Super League run-scorer, has experience of leading in T20 cricket in his home country and will now captain Derbyshire, as they aim for a successful first campaign under Mickey Arthur.

His first season in English cricket has got off to a scintillating start, scoring 844 runs from nine LV= County Championship innings, including three centuries, two of which passed 200.

The Pakistan international will captain Derbyshire in today’s Second XI T20 fixture against Nottinghamshire at The Incora County Ground (2pm), before making his official bow on Friday against Birmingham Bears.

“Shan has an aura about him, he has a stature and the players support him,” Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur said.

“He comes in as captain and Leus du Plooy will be vice-captain, so there’s a leadership change there, and one that I’m excited to see go about their work in white ball cricket.”

Don’t miss a moment with Blast Pass!

We’re looking forward to welcoming supporters back to The Incora County Ground next summer and our Blast Pass will put you at the heart of the action.

Buying a Vitality Blast pass for 2022 now will secure your place at every home group game next summer. You will be able to see every ball as the most explosive form of cricket returns to Derbyshire in 2022 for just £89, a saving of over 30%.

Wow, that's great for Shan. He has really made an impact for Derbyshire this season.

Captain Shan Masood led from the front, scoring 53, before a brilliant Derbyshire bowling performance earned the Falcons an emphatic 70-run win over Leicestershire Foxed in the Vitality Blast.

Pakistan opener, Masood, shared what proved to be the key partnership of the innings with Leus du Plooy, who hit an unbeaten 38 as the Falcons posted 159 from their 20 overs after being asked to bat first on the pitch on which Durham made a winning score of 184 for eight on Thursday.

Leicestershire fancied they could go close but on what proved to be a difficult surface to score fluently they stumbled to 47 for four in the powerplay and never recovered as the Falcons bowlers kept the pressure on throughout, dismissed for 89 to go down by a 70-run margin.

Leg spinner Mattie McKiernan’s two for 17 was the pick of some miserly Falcons bowling figures.

The Foxes lost Scott Steel, recalled in place of Louis Kimber, when he was bowled by a full delivery from Hayden Kerr, the Australian left-armer who has replaced the injured Suranga Lakmal, and Hamish Rutherford, out first ball on his debut on Thursday, perished in the second over, leg before to Wayne Madsen.

Madsen produced a wonderful piece of fielding to run out Arron Lilley with a direct hit running in from point before Colin Ackermann sliced to backward point.

Lewis Hill was run out by wicketkeeper Brooke Guest before Rishi Patel was leg before to McKiernan. The Foxes tried to hit their way out of trouble but Rehan Ahmed succeeded only in picking out mid-off. Callum Parkinson became a second victim for McKiernan before Mark Watt, the left-arm spinner, picked up a deserved scalp, turning one past Roman Walker’s bat. Kerr picked up his second wicket to finish the job as Naveen-ul-Haq skied to mid-off.

Having gone close to chasing down 200 against Birmingham Bears on Friday, the Falcons had begun confidently. They lost Luis Reece, bowled behind his legs by Roman Walker, and Harry Came, caught at backward point off the last ball of the opening six overs, but had 52 runs from the powerplay.

Falcons slipped to 77 for four after Wayne Madsen was bowled swinging fulsomely at Ben Mike and Brooke Guest, after his half-century the night before, saw his off stump knocked back as he made room to cut Callum Parkinson.

But Masood, prolific in the Championship, completed his first Blast half-century soon after ending a seven-over boundary drought with a couple off Naveen-ul-Haq, and Du Plooy, having driven Parkinson down the ground for four, cleverly ramped Scott Steel off the back of his bat.

The pair had added 51 in 26 balls when Masood sliced the same bowler straight to short third man.

Du Plooy and Hayden Kerr managed to eke out another 31 in the last four overs, Kerr driving Ronan Walker to the straight boundary and Du Plooy picking up a fourth boundary with another innovative shot over the ‘keeper’s head.

The Foxes looked happy to have kept the Falcons below 160 but in the event they had more than enough.

T20 captain, Shan Masood, reviews Derbyshire’s 70-run win over Leicestershire Foxes.

The Falcons recovered from a dramatic defeat to Birmingham Bears less than 24 hours earlier to dominate proceedings at the Uptonsteel County Ground, with Masood himself top-scoring with 53.

The new skipper praised the team’s performance and said Derbyshire will be working hard to improve further ahead of matches against Yorkshire Vikings, Lancashire Lightning and Notts Outlaws next week.

Matchwinning knock for Shan last night, fair play to him.

On Friday evening, Derbyshire Falcons and Notts Outlaws will renew one of the Vitality Blast’s fiercest rivalries, with old scores to be settled and bragging rights on the line after last year’s dramatic conclusion.

In 2021, the game at The Incora County Ground went down to the very last ball as both sides fought hard to the end, with the match ending in a thrilling tie – and this year’s encounter promises the same level of drama and intrigue.

With two former international coaches leading the sides, in Mickey Arthur and Peter Moores, this fixture is star-studded from the coaching staff into the playing squads! Captain Shan Masood will be looking to guide his team to victory on home soil, while Notts’ Dan Christian will need to call on his experienced squad to hold off the pressure of a capacity crowd at Derby!

So what can you expect from this blockbuster T20 clash?

Drama, emotion and top-class cricket

T20 is a game where anything can happen, last season’s tie was a prime example of just how unpredictable this format can be. With world-class overseas talent on show, along with a who’s who of county cricket’s top performers, the East Midlands Derby is not one to miss.

Shan Masood, Wayne Madsen, Leus du Plooy and Luis Reece all have the potential to smash the ball onto the streets of Derby, while bowlers George Scrimshaw and Sam Conners will be looking to add further to their impressive records. All-rounder, Hayden Kerr, is one of the Big Bash’s biggest stars, and he’ll be looking to bring some Aussie heat to the Notts batters.

The visitors also boast a formidable squad, with Alex Hales and Ben Duckett having earned England honours, while the evergreen Samit Patel and Steven Mullaney always have the potential to be dangerous with bat and ball.
