Only a matter of time before the Pak selectors have to sit up and take notice, regardless of his reputation or playing style, numbers dont lie

Shan Masood delivered a master-class in elegant timing to set up Derbyshire Falcons for a six-wicket victory over Leicestershire Foxes at Derby.

The Falcons skipper scored 73 from 32 balls as they chased down the Foxes 181 for 6 down with eight balls to spare.

Aaron Lilley’s 67 from 41 balls had put the Foxes in a decent position but Masood’s brilliance led the way and despite a late wobble Brooke Guest with an unbeaten 29 from 19 balls took the Falcons to a third North Group victory.

The Foxes had given themselves a solid platform by batting selectively to score 53 in the powerplay for the loss of Scott Steel who cut George Scrimshaw over backward point for six before skying Hayden Kerr to mid on.

Aaron Lilley picked up the pace by driving Matt McKiernan for six and cutting the leg-spinner for four before carving Scrimshaw for another six in the eighth over.

With Rutherford working the ball into gaps on both sides of the wicket, the Foxes were 91 for 1 at the halfway point of their innings and Lilley reached an excellent 50 from 29 balls when he late cut Alex Hughes for his sixth four.

Rutherford moved to 35 from 28 balls, his highest score for the Foxes, before driving Mark Watt to Shan Masood at cover but Lilley maintained momentum by twice carving Scrimshaw for four in the 14th over.

McKiernan responded by conceding only four from the next and Scrimshaw struck twice in the 17th by using the short ball well to get rid of Lilley and Ben Mike off consecutive deliveries.

Alex Hughes kept up the pressure by trapping Rishi Patel lbw to become Derbyshire’s leading wicket taker in T20, restricting the Foxes to five from the 18th, and Colin Ackermann’s attempt at a big finish ended in the hands of cover.

But Lewis Hill drove and cut Hughes for four as the Foxes took 15 from the last over to post a competitive total.

Masood marked his 100th career T20 appearance by driving Steel over long on for six and pulling Naveen-ul-Haq for four before Luis Reece whipped Will Davis over the backward square leg boundary.

Masood’s timing and placement brought him consecutive fours off Naveen and he moved to an effortless 50 from 21 balls to leave the Falcons well placed on 76 without loss at the end of the powerplay.

The Foxes had to remove him to have a chance and after dispatching Callum Parkinson for two more fours, he miscued a pull off Ben Mike to deep midwicket.

The Falcons went into the last 10 overs needing only 75 but they lost Wayne Madsen when he failed to beat Mike’s throw from midwicket.

Leus du Plooy was bowled sweeping Callum Parkinson and the Foxes sensed an opening when Reece holed out to Rehan Ahmed in the 15th over.

But Guest and Hughes ran well between the wicket and after Hughes reverse swept Parkinson for six, Guest thumped Naveen for two fours to seal victory.

Shan batting soon after Middlesex bowled out for 251 in the County Championship game

Since the retirement of Hafeez and the non-selection of Malik, we are missing a reliable batsman in the middle order. I trust Mohammed Rizwan to come good as he’s a brilliant cricketer. However even then, we need an extra batter. Mohammed Harris is not, I believe, the answer. The options are Shan Masood or Abdullah Shafiq. Given the former’s form this season, his selection is justified.

I don’t care if he’s an opener. Good players are good anywhere. Just because Babar and Rizwan bat in the middle order in ODIs and Test Cricket doesn’t stop them opening in t20s, does it?

I also don’t buy the excuse that Shan’s never batted in the middle before. Barbar and Rizwan had no long term opening experience before they started to open in T20s. Ollie Pope never batted at 3 in his First Class career and yet has just got a century in that position today.

Get Shan into this team and strengthen that middle order.

Another majestic innings from Shan Masood took Derbyshire to an impressive six wicket win over Middlesex on day three of the LV=Insurance County Championship match at Chesterfield.

The Pakistan left-hander scored 98 from 113 balls as Derbyshire chased down 219 to inflict a first defeat of the season on the Division Two leaders.

Middlesex lost their last seven wickets for 101 runs to slip to 196 all out with Luis Reece taking 3 for 26 and Anuj Dal 3 for 50 including Mark Stoneman who top scored with 67.

Masood was dropped twice before he fell nine short of 1,000 first-class runs for the season but an unbeaten 49 from Wayne Madsen steered Derbyshire to 222 for 4 and a 20 point win.

Middlesex’s hopes of setting a tougher target was squandered before lunch by poor shot selection and a needless run out.

Only Stoneman was the victim of a good delivery from Dal which lifted to take the opener’s outside edge but there was little mitigation for what followed.

Although nightwatchman Ethan Bamber and Max Holden both swept left arm spinner Mark Watt for six, both had gone by the interval.

Bamber batted selectively until he chased a wide ball from Dal and was caught at point and Middlesex suffered a self-inflicted blow six overs later.

John Simpson was left stranded after Holden clipped to midwicket and set off for a run with both batters at the same end when Masood’s throw arrived in Brook Guest’s gloves.

Holden was probably keen to avoid returning to the pavilion for a while but after driving Alex Thomson over long on to take the lead past 200, he tried to repeat the shot in the penultimate over before lunch and Billy Godleman held a swirling catch at cover.

Middlesex failed to stick or twist after lunch, losing their last three wickets for seven runs in six overs to disciplined bowling.

Luke Hollman chipped Reece to midwicket and after Thilan Walwallawita missed a pull at Watt, Tim Murtagh was caught behind to leave Derbyshire with the best part of five sessions to get the runs.

It was not a straight-forward chase on a pitch offering variable bounce and it did not begin well with Godleman run out in the fourth over by Holden’s throw from cover after Masood sent him back.

But Masood was always going to be the key so when he was dropped on 18 low at first slip by Stephen Eskinazi off Toby Roland-Jones in the next over it felt like a pivotal moment.

Middlesex must have sensed that when Masood effortlessly on drove Bamber for one of the eight fours that took him to yet another 50.

Roland-Jones found some extra bounce to have Guest caught behind but crucially Masood was on 55 at tea with Derbyshire needing another 130 to win.

Middlesex had to strike early to have a chance but they dropped Masood again when Sam Robson failed to cling on to a fierce cut at gully of Roland-Jones with the opener on 76.

Two more imperious boundaries took him into the nineties and a drive down the ground to the brink of a century before he cut Bamber low to gully where Robson this time made no mistake.

Derbyshire had lost their last seven wickets for 21 on the second day but Madsen and a late flourish from Reece made sure there was no way back for Middlesex whose own second innings collapse proved costly

Shan Masood reflects on Derbyshire’s LV= County Championship win over Middlesex at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield.

Masood, who scored 49 and 98 in the match, spoke about his first visit to Queen’s Park, the excellent team performance and looked ahead to Saturday’s Vitality Blast fixture against Yorkshire Vikings.

Mickey Arthur's mid-season review:

On Shan Masood and the batting unit

With Pakistan international, Shan Masood, becoming one of the leading run-scorers in the country, it’s easy to see why he has stolen many of the headlines this season.

Arthur has heaped praise on his overseas star, but is keen to highlight the outstanding performances from the batting unit as a whole this season.

“Shan’s led our batting unit, but on the back of that, you get so many good performances from different players because they’re playing with less pressure.

“Shan has the ability to put the pressure back on the opposition bowlers, which makes it a lot better for our other batters. They still have to come in and get themselves in, though.

“We’ve been ruthless on the first 20 balls, batting is about your defensive game and I think that if your defensive game is in order, you attacking game generally is too.

“I’m very comfortable with what we’ve done so far, and some of that he been on the back of some very good innings from Shan Masood, but that in no way takes anything away from our other batters.

“We’ve had virtually every batter, other than Billy, Luis and Leus, get centuries in the County Championship, and Billy, Luis got hundreds at Oxford and Leus is averaging around 50, so as a unit we’ve been very solid, which allows you to put pressure on the opposition.”

Derbyshire opener, Shan Masood, has been called-up to the Pakistan squad for their upcoming Test series against Sri Lanka.

Masood, who has scored 991 first-class runs for Derbyshire already this season, is expected to remain with the Club for the Vitality Blast group stages and join up with the Pakistan squad ahead of the series, which begins on Saturday 16 July at Galle.

The left-handed batter has four Test centuries to his name and will be aiming to force his way back into the international starting XI after his hugely impressive spell with the Club.

Masood will return to Derbyshire upon the conclusion of the series, ahead of the Royal London Cup and final three LV= County Championship fixtures.

Out for 46 off 51 balls today in the County Championship.

From Derbyshire report:

At the other end, Shan Masood became the first player to lodge 1,000 first-class runs this season when he reached nine and the prolific Pakistan batsman looked in the mood to make another big contribution, especially when he was badly dropped by wicketkeeper Oli Carter on 43 in Tom Haines’ first over.

Fortunately for Sussex it did not prove an expensive miss. Masood had added three more runs when he was pinned on his crease during an excellent spell down the slope by Steve Finn, who was making his first Championship appearance since the meeting at Derby in April. In his 12th innings Masood did become the quickest Derbyshire batsman to reach 1,000, beating the previous record by Peter Kirsten of 16 in 1980.

Shan Masood is due to lead Derbyshire in tour game vs India:

"India has an incredible team, and they are currently touring with seperate red-ball and white-ball teams, so they have a lot of talent and many world-class players"

"As a cricketer, I look at this match as an opportunity because I will get to play against some top cricketers, which will help grow my cricket. I am just looking at this as a cricket match"

In a response to a question about pressure, Shan stated that it is just another game of cricket and he will try his utmost best to pile on as many runs as he can.

Derbyshire pair Shan Masood and Wayne Madsen have been nominated for the PCA Player of the Month award for June.

Masood, who picked up the award for April, enjoyed a stellar June in the Vitality Blast, scoring four half-centuries, while he also made a match-winning 98 in the LV= County Championship against Middlesex at Queen’s Park, Chesterfield. The Pakistan batter is the second-highest run-scorer in the Vitality Blast, with an average 46.90.

Derbyshire’s all-time leading T20 run-scorer, Madsen has consistently shown his match-winning capabilities for Derbyshire throughout June. He and Masood put on partnerships of more than 80 three times in the Vitality Blast this month, while the 38-year-old also scored a stunning 176 against Sussex in the recent LV= County Championship fixture.

Masood (1,074) and Madsen (856) are the two leading run-scorers in the LV= County Championship Division Two, and both will be vying to claim the PCA Player of the Month Award for June.

Not his best knock of the season today.

31 off 28 balls against Durham in the T20 Blast.

Derbyshire and the South East Stars have doubled up PCA Player of the Month successes in 2022 with opener Shan Masood winning his second award in three months and Kalea Moore following teammate Aylish Cranstone in being voted a winner.

Masood was identified as one of the top four performers in domestic men’s cricket in June according to the PCA’s Most Valuable Player Rankings. He joined Will Jacks, James Vince, and Wayne Madsen, with a public poll deciding the winner, the Pakistani batter received 73% of the public vote with Vince in second position with 11%.

Stars all-rounder Moore impressed in a short month with a maximum of four fixtures due to the conclusion of the Charlotte Edwards Cup. The 19-year-old was up against her captain Bryony Smith, Georgia Adams and Eve Jones and edged out the 2021 MVP, finishing with 49% of the supporter vote, 7% ahead of Jones.

Masood voted best player in June

Masood scored an incredible 649 runs in June with three Match MVPs to continue his consistent run of form opening the batting.

The 32-year-old has received a call-up to the Pakistan Test squad and travels for international duty off the back of 192 MVP points in a calendar month which leaves him top of the Overall MVP in the race for the £10,000 prize.

“The most important requirement of the game is consistency,” said Masood. “The game is fast and is evolving. People pick up on opposition and they catch you out so there is no time to fall asleep so you always have to evolve.

“To back up my early season form and to win the award again shows the levels of consistency. The most exciting thing from a personal point of view was April was all about the red-ball game but this month was about a heavy fixture list with white and red-ball so by maintaining form and consistency in a month like June was the most satisfying element for me and to finish it with an award makes it most exciting.”

In contention for promotion in the LV= Insurance County Championship and a quarter final in the Vitality Blast to come, Derbyshire have been a team on the rise in 2022 and Masood has enjoyed being part of the early season success and has a nod or two in appreciation to the PCA Player of the Month shortlist.

“A lot of people have liked the look of Derbyshire and the way we have been playing and it all starts with the team. As an individual I like to see myself in the same equation, I want to be a favourite amongst my own fans but also a neutrals favourite, when I go to other grounds I also want them to like me as a player.

“I am grateful in terms of the votes that I have had and it was a month where I saw the shortlist and I was surrounded by three really good players. I think James Vince is probably my favourite player when it comes to watching cricket, as a fan you’d always like him to win.

“Wayne Madsen has had a great season and he has allowed me to play well and I have learnt so much from being around him and he is the goat when it comes to Derbyshire cricket and also county cricket. I hope I can play with him for many years.”

The top run scorer in the Championship across both divisions, the opener has left the county to meet up with the Pakistan squad ahead of their series against Sri Lanka in great form. He is aiming to continue his same approach that has stood him in good stead in 2022 whilst aiming to finish the domestic season on a high.

“I am very excited to be back in the national set-up and the onus is on me to be the same as I have been over here. International cricket shouldn’t change Shan Masood the player or the person, it is still another game of cricket and I think things start getting better when you play every game the same.

“I am grateful for the set-up created by Derbyshire and the county cricket set-up that has allowed me to thrive as a player and I have learnt a lot. I have always considered scoring runs to be a by-product.”

“It is exciting thinking of coming back after the Test series in Sri Lanka and hopefully I can finish the season on a high with an amazing club. The players and staff have allowed me to settle in and make me feel at home by really allowing me to enjoy my cricket so I’m really looking forwards to coming back.”

I’m sorry but in a line up that can accommodate hopeless Azhar Ali, and where only one batsman called Barbar has shown any ability and determination, why is Shan Masood not selected to play?

It just seems crazy to me, given Shan’s rich run of form.

I think the team think tank have no confidence on Shan in the middle order.

I am a firm believer that quality openers can play anywhere in the XI

It’s a really backwards mentality from the management. Look at what Khawaja has done transitioning from a middle order batter to opener. Shan is in the form of his life and to waste it, especially when Pakistan plays so little test cricket, is just criminal. If Shan’s form is not utilised now, who knows whether he will still be playing like this in future seasons.

Shan Masood will return to England tomorrow evening and will be available for selection from the Lancashire fixture onwards.

Making an impact for Derbyshire - currently 59*(91) in a low scoring game - chasing 222 to win vs Lancs

Tough but impressive start to his RL OD Cup season - out for 82 (117) - Lancs win by 5 wickets

Shan Masood returned to Derbyshire action with an impressive 82, and Alex Thomson claimed career-best figures, but Derbyshire fell to a 39-run defeat at Emirates Old Trafford

Steven Croft made an unbeaten 87 and Rob Jones Jones was 70 not out as the home side recovered from 67 for four to post 221 for four in their fifty overs.

Despite a resolute innings from Shan Masood, who was last out for 82, that proved too many for Derbyshire on a sluggish pitch and the visitors were dismissed for 182, Will Williams taking career-best List A figures of for 20

Lancashire’s openers got off to a slow start, scoring only 31 runs off the first ten overs of their innings as Sam Conners and Ben Aitchison maintained a tight line and length. Conners also took the first wicket when he had the in-form Luke Wells caught behind by Brooke Guest for seven but Keaton Jennings and Josh Bohannon then put on 36 before Alex Thomson took three wickets in 13 balls

With his third ball the off-spinner had Bohannon leg before wicket for 15 when the Lancastrian played across the line and he followed that four overs later by removing Jennings and Washington Sundar.

Having made 33, Jennings effectively yorked himself when he came forward and played over the top of a full-length delivery from Thomson and Washington Sundar drove his first ball straight to mid-off where Billy Godleman took a two-handed catch above his head.

That left Lancashire on 67 for four in the 21st over but the Derbyshire bowlers enjoyed no further successes as Steven Croft and Rob Jones blunted Godleman’s attack before settling for modest acceleration on a pitch unsuited to fast scoring.

Croft passed his half-century in 73 balls with four fours and Jones reached the same mark off 71 deliveries after hitting a solitary four. However, the pair scored 40 runs off the last six overs and in the process they broke Lancashire’s fifth-wicket record in List A cricket, the previous mark of 128 being held jointly by Mike Atkinson and Mike Watkinson v Oxfordshire at Christ Church, Oxford in 1992 and

Jason Gallian and Neil Fairbrother v Leicestershire at Grace Road in 1997.

The most successful Derbyshire bowler was Thomson, who took three for 25 from five overs, but Mark Watt conceded only 33 runs from his ten overs and Conners took one wicket for 41 from ten overs, two of which were bowled at the death.

The visitors’ pursuit of 222 began as badly as their hosts had done. In the fifth over, Luis Reece was caught at deep square leg for 17 by the substitute fielder George Bell off Williams and six balls later Liam Hurt brought one back off the seam to bowl Godleman for one.

Harry Came was perhaps unfortunate to be given out caught down the leg side for a single but when Brooke Guest chipped Washington to Croft at midwicket, Derbyshire were 53 for four after 16 overs.

Masood and Anuj Daj then began much the same work of repair as Croft and Jones had accomplished for Lancashire and at the halfway point of their innings the visitors were 89 for four, two runs better off than Lancashire at the same stage.

Although, Dal played on to Hurt for 15 in the 27th over, Mattie McKiernan helped Masood add 48 in 12 overs to keep Derbyshire in the hunt. McKiernan was leg before to Williams for 27 and Thomson caught and bowled by Wells for two to leave Derbyshire needing 76 off the last ten overs.

Jack Morley, who finished with one for 37, and Washington (2-43) took further wickets and the game ended when Masood holed out on the deep midwicket boundary, Rob Jones taking the low, diving catch off Williams when 22 balls remained in the game.

Rare duck for Shan in the RL OD Cup vs Hampshire.

Another good performance from Shan. It is criminal that he didn't play a single test against SL and is now not in the ODI squad for games against Netherlands.

Opener, Shan Masood, has turned down Derbyshire’s offers of a new contract and will leave the Club at the end of the 2022 season.

The Club has been in discussions with the 32-year-old regarding an extended contract for several months and despite a significantly improved offer, Masood has opted for a move to another county.

To date, he has scored 1,774 runs for Derbyshire this season, including a top-score of 239 against Sussex.

Head of Cricket, Mickey Arthur, said: “Bringing Shan to Derbyshire was my priority when joining the Club last winter. He’s shown the performances I knew he was capable of in county cricket and we’ve been keen to extend his deal since very early on in the season.

“The contract renewal reflected his performances and value to the Club, but ultimately we couldn’t match the offer. The other county set their stall out to bring in Shan and while it is of course disappointing to lose a player of his calibre, I and everyone at the Club wish him the very best for the future.

“We’ve seen a different Derbyshire this year and the group have surpassed people’s expectations. We’re shaking off that underdog tag and teams know when they play us that it’s going to be a competitive game. There’s more to come from this group and we’ll supplement that core with overseas recruitment, the process for which is already underway.”

Masood added: “I’d like to thank Mickey and his incredible coaching staff for the time and effort they’ve put in so far to create a dressing room environment and culture of the highest standards and performances.

“As a group of players, the camaraderie was second to none. I’ve been very fortunate to be around such a close and supportive group.

“To Ryan and the Supervisory Board, the staff and the supporters, thank you for making me feel at home from day one.

“Derbyshire is a great club with a very positive outlook and inclusive culture. Under Mickey’s project I see the group challenging for trophies and reaching greater heights in the very near future.

“It has not been easy making this decision, but I feel this move is the next phase of my life and career. I am extremely thankful to everyone for my time at Derbyshire, I will be following closely and most importantly will always consider it home to me.”

Shows his value in English cricket now that counties are bidding so high for him.

Pakistan should make use of his peak for the next few years.

Do we know where is he going? Speculations?

I can confirm that........it's not Lancashire.

It's got to be one of the big boys surely - Notts, Middlesex, Surrey. Warwickshire I reckon.

Playing his last game for Derbyshire in the Royal London OD Cup today.

Get. This. Man. In. The. Pakistan. Team. Right. Now.

It’s as simple as that! What are the selectors and management thinking!!!

Shan Masood will miss Derbyshire’s LV= County Championship fixture at home to Durham in September due to selection for Balochistan in the National T20 competition in Pakistan.

As a player centrally-contracted by the Pakistan Cricket Board, the top-order batter will join-up with the Balochistan squad ahead of their opening fixture on 1 September and will be aiming to continue the T20 form which saw him score 555 runs in this summer’s Vitality Blast, including five half-centuries.

The 32-year-old is set to return to Derbyshire for the Club’s final two LV= County Championship fixtures in September.
