Getting Into cricket

I’ve not had any family members who went on to play cricket at a professional level. Many of my relatives have played club cricket and the interest in cricket started at a young age. I’d go out onto the streets at every opportunity from a young age to play with my friends and anybody else who was around at the time looking for a game of cricket. Like a lot of children in Pakistan we’d be playing cricket in any park or open space.

Tape Ball

I was a bit of a local legend in tape ball cricket (laughs). It suited the way I played and we’d get large crowds of people coming to watch our team play against all comers. I learnt a lot from playing tape ball cricket and I feel that it’s really helped me so far in my introduction to cricket.

Club Cricket

I was in my own little world playing tape ball cricket in the local parks and streets, but some members of my family said to my brothers that they should take me to Peshawar and attend the trials. A lot of people were impressed with what I was doing in street and tape ball cricket and therefore suggested that I should perhaps take my cricket more seriously. I went for the trials in Peshawar and the coaches and senior players were impressed and accepted me and gave me a chance. At first I really struggled, as this cricket was much more competitive and well organised compared with what I had been used to, but after taking some time to settle down things started to improve and with the help of the coaching staff I started to score runs and take wickets.

District and Regional Trials

I come from Dir district and that falls under the Abbottabad region. After playing club cricket in Peshawar I decided to attend the Under 19 trials for Dir district and thankfully I did well at the trials and managed to make some runs and take some wickets in the trial matches.

The following year I attended the Under 19 Abbottabad trials and once again things went well. I managed to perform well under the supervision of the Abbottabad coaching staff and I was selected for the Abbottabad Under 19 team.

Pakistan Under 19s

As is the case in Pakistan if you are performing well in regional Under 19 cricket then word spreads so the national selectors came to watch me and a few other boys playing for Abbottabad. They watched a few of the matches that I played in and were impressed. I attended the pre England tour trials in Lahore earlier this year when more than 30 boys were invited. I made the cut for the England tour and hopefully I can become a regular member of the Pakistan Under 19 squad.

Batsman who became an all rounder

I started my career as a batsman. Batting was always my strength and it was what I felt I was good at. However I was encouraged to bowl left arm spin and in recent times I feel that my bowling has really improved. In fact so much so, that most of my coaches and team mates feel that I’m now in the genuine all rounder category.

Under 19 tour of England

It really gave me and the other boys great exposure. I wasn’t sure how the wickets would be in England and I wasn’t certain of a starting spot but thanks to the Almighty the tour went very well with bat and ball for me.

We started slowly but gained momentum in England. I really enjoyed playing there, the facilities were excellent and the pitches were ideal for me. The ball spun and I enjoyed batting on such true surfaces. It was a great tour for the squad and we definitely learnt a lot as individuals and as a group. So much so, that when I came back to Pakistan I played Under 19 district matches and hit centuries in both matches.

Favourite Cricketer

That will have to be the one and only Ravindra Jadeja. I like his competitive edge and the brand of cricket that he plays. His attitude is exceptional and the game is never lost when he’s got the ball or the bat in his hand.

First Class Cricket

I’ve played five List A matches so far for Abbottabad Falcons, in between playing regional and district cricket, but the aim is now to sign for ZTBL and start playing first class cricket this season. The deal to sign with ZTBL is nearly done, so hopefully once everything is sorted I’ll be playing for them in the upcoming domestic season. I think first class cricket is a tough environment and an environment where only the best cricketers survive. I’m looking forward to the challenges it will present.

Ongoing Training Camp at the NCA

I’m really enjoying the camp. It’s a fantastic opportunity to play and train alongside some players who have played international cricket and to work with some of the best coaches in Pakistan. You have to make the most of these opportunities and to learn, to work hard and to use these chances to better yourself as a cricketer.

The future

I want to continue to improve at Under 19 level and then to establish myself for ZTBL. I’ve set myself the goal of playing for Pakistan in the next 50-over World Cup after 2015. I know that’s a tough challenge but one that I hope I can achieve.

Sounds sarcastic, but I doubt it.
Anyway, from what I saw, he does seem like a genuine all rounder.
One for the future.

Looked really good in England during the recent Under 19 tour. In fact he looked one of the best players in the squad.

The comment about Jadeja was serious. He's a left arm spinner and so is Jadeja. No harm in him being his favourite cricketer.

Surely Vettori would have been a better idol?..

I went to Leicester to watch the match and saw that innings. He took the English bowling apart with such clean hitting. Definitely one to watch. Lets hope he doesn't disappear into the mess that is Pakistan Domestic cricket.

I'd suggest he goes to England and find a decent league team and then maybe get a County contract.

When he reaches mid 20's he'll be qualified to play for England.

He's not Afridi. This kid got brains as well and can play strokes. Then, hit at will when he wants.

^ Kamran is a right handed batsman :dav

Ah, right.
But my main point was at how he batted.
He's naturally aggressive, like Jadeja.
But the little I saw of him, he showed that he can bat responsibly.
We really need HASHAM2 here though, haha.

Ahhh.. There it is

He is not even close to Jadejas batting technique or aggressiveness

Infact he is entirely different from Jaadus style of play and stroke makings

This guy's exactly what we need in our ODI team, hope he makes the transition from U19 to FC level pretty well, and is fast-tracked into the national side.

lol@ people over analyzing his choice for favorite cricketer. It's not really a big deal.

Well, a 56 ball hundred shows that he can be aggressive if he wants to be.
Also, I said that his batting is more like Jadeja's than Vettori's.

Doesn't look 18 to me from that pic.

Jadeja is the ultimate modern day cricketer and I don't see anything wrong in idolizing him.

Pakistani formula of finding real age- Take the age which is provided and multiply by 2=there you are with the real age. :D ;-)
On a serious note,I don't think majority of people in Pakistan provide their real age.

There is always a difference of 3-4 year between their real and fake age :rahat

Best wishes to Kamran.

A cricketer who has that hunger and desire to succeed.

Always difficult to judge how a player will do in future, but this lad looks a good prospect.

Re: Talent Spotter : Kamran Ghulam

Pakistani youngsters have weird favourite cricketers - Jadeja, Gambhir :))

Which domestic sides will he be representing this season?

Seems he's been told to play in the Quaid E Azam Trophy for Abbottabad rather than for ZTBL in the President's Trophy.

Made 157 not out today.

And when he delusional fans and some delusional player, who think there is no replacement for him.

157 is awesome. What's the maximum Afridi scored in 1 inning in domestic cricket?

We'll have to see how he progresses this season and maybe one after that, to be sure whether he's international class.

Brilliant innings by Kamran Ghulam in the Asia Cup U19 final today, but why did they send him in at number 6.

Great innings under extrume pressure, if aslam stayed till the end we would have won

Well done young lad, looking forward to watch him in the WC, hopefully the match against India will be televised.

played like a true cornered tiger today, hats off to Kamran for not giving up till the end.

should have gone for the big hitssure total was out of reach when Gohar went but you never know should have taken the risk him, Sami,Zafar and Zia are the ones I have the highest hopes with.

Great knock and he has fantastic youth averages with bat and ball. Fiery character too. Heated exchange with the Indians whilst batting.

I like this guy. He is rapid between wickets and loves to rotate strike.

Like our seniors, when they play Ind, most of the players froze but he stood tall and scored a great hundred. When i watched him bowl live he seemed to bowling a liitle too slow but if he can turn the ball at around 55mph, then we have a potential international player on our hands.

I'm really excited about this guy and Zafar Gohar. They have that fighting spirit that I've always cherished among past greats. Way to go boy ! :imran

Kamran Ghulam is a serious talent. Look at his U19 stats
Batting- 534 runs @59.33 and SR 100.75
Bowling- 16 wkts @24.06 and ER 3.63

A really really good genuine all rounder. Wish him the best for the future

as a bowler he looks rubbish to me. No venom at all. As a batsman, maybe he can do well.

He's a batting all rounder, he can't be the main spinner but a very good spin option as the secondary spinner. I'd say he's M. Hafeez 3.0.

genuine all rounder i hope they will groom him in the first class instead of wasting him like many other talents.

Hit 52 @ SR 120 and then took 2/19 @ less 3 ER against Sri Lanka

Was having a horrendous tournament prior to this match. I still think he will have to be more consistent for Pak.

seems like this guy is a hitter , thats y he was sent at 3 cuz usually hasan raza bats at 3 but he took the responsibility good.

How? He got run out against india, scored good against Scotland and only bad game was against PNG.

Avg 25 even after his knock of 50 odd in the QF. Isn't it horrendous? He has failed in all the matches barring QF. Needs to perform well in the remaining matches.

best batsman in the side after Sami his runout lost us the game vs India if he clicks along with the usual suspects there is no way Pak ain't winning the tourney.

Fantastic prospect, Imam Haq, Sami Aslam, kamran Ghulam as well as others in the squad should'nt be ignored and wasted. The best PCB can do for them is give them confidence by getting them jobs in the top level organizations that play dept. cricket. For the long term, continue to nurture them and if there is a youngster like who deserves to play at the Pakistan A level, then gra dually put him thru proper procedure like other nations to prepare them to play at world class level.

Not going to happen under this corrupt system these boys will be wasted like dozens before them unfortunately

We need more A tours.
Babar Azam, Sami Aslam, Zafar Gohar, Kamran Ghulam, Karamat Ali, and Hammad Azam would make a great A team.

He flopped in the U19 WC where it mattered the most...
Not writing him off but it was a major disappointment - the way he played in the tourney.

i agree, I thought before tournament he should be in team but now I think he's not international material yet.

Let this guys play our domestic matches for a while. He has only played like 4 FC matches. Let him play more and it will give us a good indication of him.

With all due respect to his knock, I too would have thrashed lancaster university bowling line up.

What hitting by this guy! 36 off 13 balls on his debut T20! Definitely one to look out for! Him and Gohar seem like ideal replacements for Afridi and Hafeez in the future...

Only a matter of time before Kamran is in the ODI and/or T20I team(s).

He looked very good in the U 19 WC and I hope he kicks on. I want to see him bowl just a little quicker with losing his flight.

Lol he was useless in wc

He may be out of form in 1 series. But his hitting today showed that Talent is there.
Just look at his complete record and you will understand my point of view that failing in wc does not mean he is not good enough.

Bump! This guy is seriously talented. Potential Afridi replacement right here!
