Some of his shots were amazing.He needs a couple of years in domestic cricket to learn all the skills.

The boy has a good variety of shots, and is very useful given his handy off spin. However, it’s very important to take this innings in its essence. He was dropped 3 times, including two relatively straightforward chances. He also escaped an LBW shout that looked pretty plumb. Given that we’re talking about in the context of future internationals, that’s 3 too many chances to give.

However, two of those chances came from trying to clear the boundary. Thus timing isn’t his issue, as much as power hitting and power generated is. He’s similar in this sense to PZ’s Mohammed Haris, who also likes to play aggressively but doesn’t have the power to regularly clear the rope.

I don’t know how these lads increase their power though. It can’t be as simple as bulking up in the gym. Perhaps using a heavier bat, or widening their stance may help?

Tangents aside, I think Qasim is a bright prospect. However he’s a good two years away from even being thought of as a Pakistan hopeful.

Qasim Akram was one of the standout performers in the recently concluded U19 World Cup. He excelled both with bat and the ball. The two-time U19 WCer has also had an amazing start to his domestic career. But he received poor treatment by his PSL franchise where he was used like a part-timer and also didn't get many balls to bat. He scored a brilliant half-century but his teammates cost them the match. So what do you guys think, has the Karachi franchise derailed Qasim Akram's momentum, who looked like the next big thing for Pakistan Cricket?
 
I would not put that much into a few PSL games to be honest. His main focus should be to play a lot of first class cricket and try to get some contracts overseas.

They didn't give him a role was moved up and down the order and didn't bowl much.
 
Pakistan Cup Semi-Final : KP v CP:

Qasim Akram batting at number six top-scored with a 63-ball 67, which included 10 fours.
 
He needs to be fast track in Pak team before the world cup 2023 , genuine spin bowling allrounder and a fearless aggressive batter who can absorb pressure as well.
 
Yeah seems like he will be fast tracked. Can't say at this stage how his career will progress- too early. But if the management think he's a good future prospect, they should get him to play a full domestic season and look at next year's home series schedule to start him off.

You cant groom somebody for the crucial number 4 spot which is usually given to the second best batter in the team.

Qasim at best will be a batting allrounder who bats at number 6 I think.
 
Fast track based on what. The more i see him the more convinced I am that he’s won’t be anything special.

I think he will be similar to Hafeez but better in terms of impact with the bat and ball.
 
This guy needs to molded into a middle order batter. He is one of the rarer breeds of positive but not brainless, attacking but not limited cricketers currently in our system. Plus he is also a very handy bowler and can realistically serve Pakistan for well over a decade if things go well. Not saying he has a perfect technique or he won't have any ups or downs, but this guy seems different from the others. I hope we can hire some good people who can properly develop him and expose to international cricket at the right time.
 
Qasim Akram wants to bat like Babar Azam and prolong career like Hafeez and Shoaib

Lahore, 7 June 2022:

Babar Azam, world’s number-one batter in white-ball cricket and Pakistan’s all-format captain, has a huge fan following around the world. Former Pakistan U19 captain Qasim Akram is also one of Babar’s admirers and wants to follow in his footsteps so that he can also make a meaningful impact in the game.

“I idolise Babar Azam as a batter,” Qasim told PCB website, adding: “He is an articulate batter and I want to be the next Babar Azam of this world.”

Qasim also hails from his idol’s hometown in Lahore, where his father works in a pre-loved clothing shop. After captaining Pakistan in the West Indies tournament, he has remained Babar’s teammate in Central Punjab and HBL PSL franchise Karachi Kings.

“It was an unforgettable experience for me to have such a great mind around. I have learnt from him how to build an innings, play cover-drives and improve pull-shots.”

The 19-year old scored 203 runs and took 10 wickets in six matches of the ICC U19 World Cup 2022. While representing Central Punjab in the National T20 2021-22, he took 11 wickets. Qasim scored a half-century in the HBL PSL 2022 for Karachi Kings, while in the Pakistan Cup 2021-22, he scored 285 runs and grabbed 10 wickets from 10 outings.

“Babar has performed wherever he has played and I regularly follow his batting skills. So, I feel fortunate enough to share the dressing room with him. As a world number-one batter, he has set such high standards in Pakistan cricket that I would like to meet.”

The middle-order batter and off-spinner is also among 107 players who are part of the PCB Pathways Programme. The four-week camp for the players’ is likely to start in the second week of June in Muridke, which is in line with PCB’s strategy to invest in young players.

“PCB Pathways Programme is a great initiative where the young cricketers will receive a stipend of PKR30,000 per month and also earn 100 per cent educational scholarship, which will not only help them but also their families,” Qasim said.

Qasim, with his off-spin bowling, has to date picked 14 wickets from nine first-class matches and is hoping to prolong his career like Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik.

“I follow how Shoaib Malik and Mohammed Hafeez have extended their careers as all-rounders. I am presently working to improve my off-spin skills.”
 
Bits and pieces player like Shadab, jack of all master of none. Not particularly good with either bat or ball.

He doesn’t have Shadab’s PR and acting skills though.
 
The St Kitts & Nevis Patriots have announced their overseas signings for the 2022 Hero Caribbean Premier League which gets underway on 31 August.

This year they will be joined by Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga. Also heading to the Patriots is the hugely exciting South African batter Dewald Brevis who has impressed for the Mumbai Indians at the Indian Premier League.

Hasaranga will be available after the first few matches of the Patriots season and Pakistani off-spinner Qasim Akram will be with the franchise until he arrives. Akram led the Pakistan team which took part in the U19 Cricket World Cup in the Caribbean earlier this year.

Just looking at some National T20 stats, this kid is having an absolute horror show.

Averaging 9.85 and 120 with bat and ball after 8 matches.

Early in his domestic career, young players often struggle early and have to learn to make adjustments

Nice to see him really bat well today. He needed that and hopefully a start of a good run. Long-term, I think he has plenty of potential and could be a much needed solution to Pakistan's middle order woes.

This lad looks like a proper players has all the shots, can play aggressive not like our lumber 1 players who can only play at a SR of 120
 
Top prospect. Pressure of captaincy has had the better of him this season but we saw glimpses of his talent and class today.
Useful bowler and good fielder too.
 
gets made captain, bats middle order, opposition gets dismissed for a low score, no pressure chase and he decides to open himself. the lad might have talent but that's all i need to see to know his mentality.

has had a total waste of a national t20 up till this point. needs to massively up his output.

He is right. Qasim Akram did do that and I found it odd too. I don't think it was being selfish but he was clearly struggling for form in this tournament and wanted to get himself going by opening and giving himself enough time to bat. Still didn't work though but glad he seemed to find his mojo in this match.

Fair enough, and thanks for the clarity. I also take your wider point on young players developing at different rates. I believe, as he’s still a young man, he’ll become more surer of himself the more he plays. I just found hilarious how the other poster assumed that the kid was decidedly selfish based on one match. He’s growing up in front of the world and we all mature in our own ways.
 
Qasim has underperformed massively but that's fine he's stil young and learning.
 
Potential was never in doubt, now seems to have started finding his feet. Pretty normal ups and downs in the early development of any young player, if he keeps his head straight (Unlike quite a few others)he will play for Pakistan.

Have a go at the senior pros. He is a 19-year-old kid with time to develop. Can turn into a proper batter with some handy white ball balling.

The only young middle-order batsman in Pakistan worth talking about. Haven't seen anyone else so far in this tournament at least. Iftikhar and Khushdill are going to fail spectacularly and there's a chance for him to be fast-tracked. And that's not a bad thing in my opinion. We have a complete absence of middle-order batsmen in the country and we need to blood in early any young batsman who shows promise.

The opening situation, on the other hand, is not bad. By far the best opening prospect from this tournament was Saim Ayub. Huraira, even though not that successful this tournament, is there or thereabouts. Both these young guys have the ability to clear the inner ring and can play well in the powerplay.

Agree on Saim. Hurraira though is certainly not a T20 player. He opens but doesn’t score fast enough against quicks (times it well, but keeps finding the fielder). He’s very good against spin, but if he’s not opening, he needs to have the ability to clear the boundary, which is yet on evident. He looks like a handy ODI and test player, but he needs some developing as a T20 player.

Disagree on the fast tracking. I’d much rather we persist with Ifti/Khushdil/Asif Ali if it means Hurraira, Saim, Qasim and Haseebullah get developed properly. I remember Haider was such a good prospect, but we then fast tracked him, badly badly managed him and now his career has suffered as he has continually warmed the bench rather than refining his trade in first class cricket. Batsmen need to bat, and need to develop via time spent in the middle. If any of these lads gets fast tracked and god forbid have an iffy start, they’ll get media pressure, get benched and then discarded, stunting their development. Each of the four mentioned, if developed correctly mentally, technically, physically, could easily serve Pakistan for a decade plus. But they need to be correctly nurtured. If that means, in the short term, persisting w/ Ifti/khushdil/Asif Ali, so be it.

Qasim Akram is definitely a solid prospect and needs to be presisted with in domestic cricket. In 2-3 years could become a solid player to inject into the LOI's

I mentioned the fast-tracking only in the case of Qasim Akram because to me he looks like the more mature (probably older?) of the three. I don't think Ifti and Khusdil are surviving the world cup. If/when that happens, I don't think you have many options but to introduce the likes of Qasim and give them a long rope. Miracles shouldn't be expected of him but he has to be eased in.

A few years of domestic experience is certainly a good thing but you can also regress in our domestic system and certain players should be picked on potential. Of course, you need a good support system and guidance as well early on, which I feel is lacking in our current national setup.
 
Qasim Akram: why is he not in the Pakistan squad already?

He so good. Dynamite talent. We have a serious void in the middle order, he is so much more useful than Iftikhar even now!

Hold your horses Rana. Before these twin fifties he was averaging single digits in National T20.

Let these youngsters develop before fast-tracking them prematurely.
 
He's a good player he didn't have a good tournament but that's fine becouse he's young and hopefully he learns.

He is way more of a leader than Babar. They should persist with him as the captain even if Babar comes back and is available for them.
 
Qasim Akran & Saim Ayub are by far the best new talent in National T20 ... also impressed by Rehan Afridi (KPK keeper) .... i dont see why both cant play in LOI team straight away .. esp Qasim should play at no4 for good

lovely innings .


though i think the boundaries are too small and the pitch is extremely flat. Teams should be scoring 400 there. There should be better ground for our premium od tournament.
 
He should be batting at 4, and develop from there. Too often he is at 6 or 7 and that will hinder his development

I know right! I’m sure he’ll get a chance in 2026, whilst unjustly silenced players like Shoaib Malik take their rightful place in the middle order.
