[VIDEOS/ PICTURES] Virat Kohli has secured his position as an ATG

Wake up people. Don't fall for fake stats.

His runs have no weight.

Totally Agree till we do not force Wasim and Waqar out of retirement and have them bowl at full pace on an uncovered grass pitch he cannot be deemed a great...

Yes because tours of SA (2013), NZ (2014), Aus (2014), Eng (2016), SA (2018) and Eng (2018) were all friendly matches. All 17 test matches were just played for fun.

Even in the SA home series of 2015 that you mention, Kohli did well. It was a very low-scoring series. Apart from Rahane, no batsmen from either side averaged more than 36. Kohli averaged 33.

An average of 33 when pitches are not flat, and actually have turn.. shows he can't handle spin.. even against Australia who fielded a reasonable spin attack, he failed at home.

It is very convenient to score a century against the mighty WI attack and claim greatness..

Greatest batsman I've watched live since I started following cricket, I missed Sachin and Lara's peak years. In tests Smith may be a contender but Virat is the complete package.

Contender ? Smith is by far the best Test batsman of this generation.. when he arrived, Steve Waugh claimed he is going to be the best Australian player of last 20 years ..

He has been amazing in the last few years in tests. Another 3 or 4 years like this in tests will cement as 1 of test match crickets greats. Something that PP didn't think was possible:srt

I don't know why my Indian friends got triggered so much
Its a fact that kohli ran away from asia cup only because of aamir... Kohli got some mental block when he face aamir
If you have seen all the previous matches one thing you will observed that kohli always overly cautious while facing aamir.. Aamir always troubled him the most and even kohli have accepted this but some indians have hard time accepting this fact
And if we talk about kohlis performance in india he always scored when its flat road and failed when its a rank Turner
I dont remember any significant inning of kohli on rank turner facing quality spinner on the other hand i remember each and every delivery tendulkar faced in that epic 136 inning at chennai against saqlain....though on loosing side that was one if the epic knock on rank turner
It doesn't matter how many runs kohli will scored against aamir what people will always remembered is the way kohli was doing bhangara against aamir in CT Final... That image is imprinted in the mind of every cricket lover
Indians need to stop get triggered on every post that dont say good thing about there legend.

ATG after averaging 59.30 in a series at his absolute peak? This has got to be a joke, right?

Let me remind you that Mohinder Amarnath averaged 66 against the greatest bowling line up ever assembled on their own turf in 1983 and yet nobody ever called him an ATG.

Day after day, I see this hooplah around Kohli (primarily owing to incessant marketing) increasing and I just don't get it. Viv Richards went to England as a young man in 1976 and averaged 118 with 800+ runs in 4 Tests. Rahul Dravid went to England in 2002 at his peak and scored 600+ runs in 3 Tests (more than Kohli could do in 5). These are the real ATGs.

Virat Kohli is someone who just had a good series, in which too the "master chaser" choked in 2 run chases when it was really needed. Not to mention that the guy has practically insured that no one except himself can ever be sure of their places in the team. He is the only guy in the team playing with any sense of security whatsoever. In a sense, this guy is obligated to be doing well to make up for the hole he and Shastri have put India in due to their nonsensical selections on a consistent basis.

Virat Kohli ji is not the master chaser he is made out to be.. he just could not win any Test match batting in 4th innings.. whatever we say, it's the 4th innings chase which separates men from boys and Kohli has not been able to play any good innings yet.

It's one thing to score easy runs, and quite another to score when needed the most.. his 4th innings chasing record will always be a blot on his career and thus can never be considered an ATG.. look at Younis Khan, he has such a good average in 4th.

:)) So you are putting down Kohli because of not being able to finish 4th innings chases in the England series, ignoring his overall 4th innings record. And you conveniently bring up Younis Khan's overall record in 4th innings. Can you please let us know how many of his 4th innings knocks helped his team win Test matches?

Let me break it down to you. He has 1 century and 2 50's in 4th innings that came in victories. And that's his overall record. Kohli so far has 1 50 in 4th innings that came in a win. So he needs 1 century and 1 more 50 in 4th innings wins to match Younis Khan.

And you're comparing them based on that criteria? Strange!

Bravo... Good post bro Hitman

Why can't few accept the fact that Kohli is ATG.

After scoring 590+ runs in ENG series Kohli has exceeded expectations of many and cleared doubts of many nay sayers (Holding, Artherton etc). Looks like Kohli has to score in Moon and Mars now :shh

Clearly the benchmark for ATG is performances in odi tri-series involving WI and SL ... we get that. But do tell us how he fools the selectors into picking him when he is such a crap player as you say.

How ?? What has YK achieved ? Kohli has already more centuries outside Asia. Has equal double centuries (6).Has the greatest peak ICC rating for any Indian or Pakistani batsman. Has already got 62% of younis' total runs, has already scored 24 centuries that's 70% of younis'. You are talking as if Younis' has scored some 15000 runs and 50 centuries.

Because other Indian players are worse.

Kohli is already in the league of greats and it will be a disappointment for people who have grown up in this era if he doesn't go down as the second greatest batsmen of all-time to have come from Asia.

He averages 55 in test cricket at this point of time and that is done after having delivered some great performances in Asia as well as outside Asia. He plays for a top country, so the factor that his stats are boosted by playing good % of games against Zim and BD goes out of question like it is for Sangakkara and Khan.

People can say whatever they want but his innings in Adelaide and Edgabastan were absolute classic and it was a pleasure watching him in both those innings.

Some fans are making it sound as if his performance in recent England series is the only good thing he has done in his career and that is why they are comparing that performance with Amarnath's greatest ever performance as well as Rahul Dravid's greatest ever performance. But they fail to understand that he has already been fantastic in all his previous tours to South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.

If we look at his test batting average against all opposition, the lowest is against West Indies(i.e. 45). If we talk about scoring in tough conditions, his twin 40s in Johannesburg is a kind of inning most Asian batsmen can only dream to play.

He is an aggressive player who likes to dominate the opposition and is quite visible with his Strike Rate which is close to 60 and this is where I will pick him over say, Dravid or Kallis in the longer format of the game, albeit the constraint is that he needs to maintain this performance for a longer period of time.

Alongwith Steven Smith and AB de Villiers, he will be the one and first of these three batters debuted post 2000s to be remembered even after 50 years from now. Others are well behind this trio.

Lol. YK has about 10k runs in test cricket with 34 centuries.Virat already has 6k plus test runs with 24 centuries and he is not even 30. Virat didnot go missing from playing in SENA countries for 6-7 years like YK did between 2007 to 2013 where he made one tour to SENA countries.

I am not even talking about ODIs here where Kohli wipes the floor with YK.

When people talk about the best batsmen of this generation they talk about Kohli. No one talks about YK as one of the best or among ATG.

Kohli already had 60 odd international centuries and he isn't even 30. A great in my book.

He has two things to do that would elevate his status to another level, captain and lead India to a series victory in either SA or Aus, and have a dominating WC ODI campaign with good performances in knockouts.

But then again, even if he does manage them both his serial haters will claim he didn't score match winning tons on Venus Mars Honolulu or Syria with ball swinging miles and bombs dropping over his head.

Why should we listen to those people? We can form our own judgment.. Kohli looks for easy runs.. what is his performance on turning tracks of India against good spinners ?

Because these people are the experts who mould opinion. Now one or two or a couple of them saying something is one thing but here its unanimous.

Kohli scored 590 easy runs in England.
Scored 4 centuries in Aus
Just out batted everyone in the SA test series.

Such easy runs.

Some PPers have such exceptionally high standards for Kohli to rate him as ATG LOL. What next? He needs to bat upside down with a tooth pick and get a run a ball 200 dealing only in 6s and 4s in MCG this summer to earn the respect of some demanding fans here? Grow up, if every batsman is held to such high standards there won't be any ATG left in our sport. Kohli cemented his spot as ATG this year with his back to back efforts in SA and Eng. The only question is whether he can end up in the upper chamber of ATGs joining Sachin, Viv, Sobers, Kallis etc. I am pretty sure he will perfect the art of batting by the time he is done, he will change our sport forever like very few have done. We are privileged to watch greatness in its purest form, why bicker and whine instead of enjoying the maestro in all his glory?

Look at Steve Waugh's 4th innings average. Is he also not close to YK in your book? Every batsman has flaws, Kohl has less flaws than most including YK. He has done reasonably well in 4th innings and while he may not be as proficient against spin, he overshadows Younis against pace/bounce/seam. Not talking about ODIs/T20s because than things will get really ugly and I don't want to disrespect a legend like YK to win trivial arguments in a forum.

ODIs/T20s don't define the legacy of a player.. it's Test cricket which separates men from boys.

YK has a fabulous overall record against pace and spin alike.. you should have watched him on India tour of 2005-06 when he scored a century in Kolkata against Kumble, and then followed it with a double-ton in Bangalore.. a match winning effort.

Not until his runs translate to something more than India getting smashed in SENA. His three greatest series have seen India get beaten 2-0, 4-1 and 2-1 (the sole win coming in a dead rubber). Compare that to some of the real great players and you'll see that they actually won tests/series for their respective teams.

He's a good test cricketer right now and arguably the best in the world, but has some way to go before he can be compared with the greats.

This. He is scoring all his runs in losing causes which mean absolutely nothing from the team's point of view. He might be achieving great personal milestones, but is unable to change the fortunes of his team on overseas tours. These runs are nothing but moral victories.

I watched him and those were flattish pitches. Kohli has done well against spinners on flat pitches. He failed on rank turners against SA, Aus and NZ which featured low scoring matches. Younis was extraordinary against spin but don't remember how he fared on rank turners. Pujara is the only batsman I have seen who consistently scores well on such pitches and Kohli can't match that. He doesn't need to because he has other strengths. No batsman is flawless.

Did you check Steve Waugh's 4th innings record?

Does the same criterion apply to Lara?

In 2nd test .. 14 of 20 Pakistan wickets went to spinners.. with Kumble taking 7 in the second innings..
In 3rd test .. Kaneria got 5 in the first innings and spinners got 7 wickets in the second innings..

Both these tests were played with spin friendly conditions with 2 of the premier world spinners in Kumble and Harbhajan on their familiar territory.. Younis hammered them.. such dominance, Kohli can only dream of.. give credit where it's due..

Let me remind you that Mohinder Amarnath averaged 66 against the greatest bowling line up ever assembled on their own turf in 1983 and yet nobody ever called him an ATG.

Yet, the same Mohinder Amarnath shortly thereafter had the following scores over 6 innings against the same West Indies bowlers, in a home series:

0, 0, 1, 0, 0, 0

After this drubbing at home, Mohinder Amarnath never quite recovered his magic touch.

Yes this was the same Mohinder Amarnath who shortly before this massive slump, scored over 1000 runs against the fearsome quicks, well before May end in a calendar year (still a world record).

I am a silent reader of this forum but this forum never stop me to amaze after four year mocking him for his poor series in eng suddenly goals are changed now new criteria is to perform in rank turner . This must be a hight of absurdity. What a sore loser mentality 😱 so now every Asian batsman judged by his performance in Asia. Next against Zimbabwe where Younis Khan scored double hundred

Does the same criterion apply to Lara?

Absolutely not. Kohli must chase 500 on his own in the 4th innings of test against W&W + Imran and Akhtar at their peak on the greenest pitch ever with both his hands tied behind his back. Only then will he be good enough to get into Pakistan's under 17 team.

Can't trust most Pakistan fans to judge Indian players. Simple.

Kohli is an ATG. Fact.

Is this even a debate? He illustrated his maturity today brilliantly by not playing over-aggressively just to match Prithvi shaw. He just played on merti played within his comfort zone. He is such a naturally talented batsman. Everytime you think he would miss the straight one his bat comes down perfectly. Reminds me of Tendulkar whip through square leg. Bat almost always comes down at the right time.

Good post, well summarized.

Virat Kohli is ATG ..End of Debate :vk2

He has convingly outscored all other batsman in two of the toughest countries SA and Eng. What more can you ask? Even tendy and lara wont demand more other than ppers

I had actually predicted that people would invent new criteria if he succeeded in Eng/SA even before a ball was bowled ... it was so obvious that would happen :))

Hope he continues good work he has been doing for Indian cricket. The only problem is that no one else shows up on overseas tours and it is tough for a player to do consistently good with that negative mindset in team. Hope right selections are made by him from the player pool and right players succeed to give him the will to do more in overseas tests too.

Kohli....

Top scored in the series Vs Sa in Sa -> 286 runs
Top scored in the series Vs Eng in Eng -> 593 runs.
Currently second highest scorer Vs Aus in Aus -> 224 runs ( Trailing Pujara by 66 runs)

This isn't even a discussion anymore Kohli is ATG, if you don't agree you are blind, stupid or biased or all of the above.

The die hard kohli haters will never accept his greatness no matter what he does. It's not because they hate kohli as a player but it's because of different reasons like he is Indian, he is arrogant, he is not from their state etc etc

Mostly Pakistanis who try to undermine his records do it for obvious reasons because of their upbringing of being brainwashed into hating India/Indians. quite a few people like that on these forums.

Indians who hate him are because they try to be holier than thou and don't like his behaviour..(big lol)

Then there are few who don't like him because he's not from their state, caste etc and when someone calls him a better player than their idol from their state/caste they get triggered and start to hate kohli just to prove their point...(These are the worst kind of losers).

Well - he is happy!

Cricket will Neve be same for many of us when he leave the field. It's make me sad that he had now just 5-6 year of career.

He will easily play for another 7-8 years.
He may not say it out but I think he has two things on agenda.
Win in South Africa.
Win in WC
Any order will do, in these 7-8 years.

Virat Kohli on retirement, says cricket a special part of my life but not most important thing

Virat Kohli is one of the most passionate cricketers going around and likes to wear his hearts on his sleeves when it comes to showcasing his emotions on the pitch. The Indian captain has been one of the most consistent batsmen in the past few years and has already established his credentials as one of the greatest the game has ever seen. However, for Kohli, there is more to life than just cricket and he intends to focus on his family post cricket.

He has been one of India's best in the sport and continues to rule batting charts in both ODI and Test formats. Kohli has over the years broken several records with his bat and created several of them. He recently overtook Sachin Tendulkar to become the quickest to score 10,000 ODI runs for India and is the only active batsman, who remains in touching distance of overtaking Sachin's tally of most international centuries - 100.

Kohli currently has 64 international hundreds to his name after scoring his 39th ODI ton against Australia in the recently-concluded ODI series. He left behind Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara to take the third spot on the list of batsmen with most international centuries. He is only behind former Australian captain Ricky Ponting and Sachin on the elite list.

While he continues to assert his dominance as one of the greats of the modern generation, Kohli wants to focus on his family after cricket. He has already claimed that he won't be touching his bat after retiring and now he has explained what he intends to do post-retirement

"8 years down the line, priority would be family. Priority would be myself, Anushka and our family by then. Cricket would obviously be a part of my life always but I think family should be priority at all times because nothing is bigger than life. Cricket is a part of life, nothing should be bigger than life," Kohli said on his Mobile Application, Virat Kohli App.

"I know people take life too seriously and be like... 'if you don't take cricket too seriously, then you're not committed enough'. I don't believe in all that. The larger picture always has to be life because whatever happens and may happen, you always come back home.

"So I think the priority will be family, should be family. Cricket will be a very special part of my life, but it's not the most important thing in life is the way I see it. I am blessed to be able to do it right now, it has to end one day. Eight years down the line, I think I will be totally focused on my family," he said.

Kohli recently became first ever Indian captain to win a Test series in Australia. He then led India to another emphatic victory in the ODI series. The visitors won both the series 2-1 respectively Down Under, while the T20I series ended up in a tie after the final game was abandoned due to rain.

He specifically mention the time period twice, 8 more years. He'll be 38 years old by then.

I’m guessing he intends to retire after the 2027 World Cup. I think he’ll win India the title and retire like Imran Khan.

Can Virat win one more world cup for India? He was mdeiocre in 2011 and was merely a presenger in that team. He needs to win one for India with major contribution to cement his legacy.

Have you seen a better batsman than Kohli?

Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting ..... I'd say they were probably as good as Kohli during their peak (even here I'm being kind/generous to them).

But seriously, have you seen someone you can say was better than Kohli? This guy is not a man, his a bloody machine. He is a phenomenon seen once in 50 years in the game.

41st ODI century, and 66th International century.

No I honestly haven't.

Leaving egos aside, even I haven't. That's what I honestly believe. I have been the biggest fan of Sachin in the world. Old time fans on PP knows it.

Yet I have no option but to say that Kohli is simply the best batsman I have seen in my life. And I started watching cricket since the early 90's.

Ok this generation alone, Steve Smith is at another level.

Overall a player will always be judged based on test performances and though Kohli has great numbers for n that format too, he still is way behind Tendulkar, Ponting who despite being attacking batsmen averaged 59+ at their peaks in test cricket. Kohli averages a mere 53 at his peak. It’s quite average.

Probably not. He's head and shoulders above everyone else at this moment in time.

Kohli averages 66 since 2016 with 14 centuries, and he is still at his peak.

Kohli would be averaging a lot closer to 60 if Indian pitches were like those in Australia. Smith averages 29 in Bangladesh, 43 in England, 41 in SA, 41 in SL, and 43 in the UAE. There's not much between them.

You are assuming that Kohli s test peak is over. Kohli may as well reach 60 test average in another 2-3 years the way he is playing at the moment.

I will be happy if Babar azam is half of kohli by the end of his career. Kohli Bhai ki kya baat hai. Champion Cricketer hai.

Nope, which is why I make it a point to watch him bat as much as I can. Like with Federer or Messi, you just have to tune-in because you know chances are you're never going to see anyone play the game better.

Hot take:

Steven Smith will outscore Virat Kohli in the 2019 WC and reclaim his throne as the world's best batsman.

Another century, he doesn't stop, especially against Aussies.

Watched Tendulkar, Lara and Ponting at their peak, and no way were they as consistent as this run machine. Kohli is another level IMO.

There have been plenty of better batsmen in test cricket during this decade and I've seen them all. In ODIs, ABDV was better at his peak than Kohli is during his.

Kohli is easily the greatest Batsman of our time. No one comes close. Not even Sachin Tendulkar or Brian Lara.

I have watched Lara, Tendulkar, Ponting and AB for their whole careers. I can confidently say that a Kohli is the best I have ever seen. The consistency and reliability is never seen before.

The other thing with Kohli is that he genuinely tries to win for his team but Teenda ended up having this stigma of playing to puff up his stats.

It's still hard to say. Pitches were tougher and bigger grounds in Viv's day and you can see those numbers.

I haven't seen him, but it's disrespect to me to call anyone the best of the best given the game has changed.

Similar to Jordan vs. Wilt debate, Crosby vs. Gretzky, Messi/Ronaldo vs, Pelé. With the advance of the game itself with rules, pace, style of play, it's an almost impossible task.

I'm sure in twenty years someone will put up better numbers than Kohli, but then variables such as average score in comparison to peers, speed of the game, gamestlyle, opposition strength, pitch and field type will all be brought up, as well as the eye test.

It's fair to say Kohli is the best bat of this generation in LOI's and it's not even close, and to be the best in your generation is in and of itself an incredible achievement.

Hats off to a legend.
