[VIDEOS] Prithvi Shaw - The most overrated batter of the millennium

India can bring back Rahul maybe. He is in tremendous form. But Shaw needs time to work on his technique for success overseas.

Stays leg side of everything and tries to bash it.Might work in India but needs to work on his technique

Good thing hes very young

There's Gill who was backup opener in India and now Shaw jumped the queue

Kohli and Shastri don't know how to develop players and build a team

This thread will end with Shaw making some posters look foolish.

This thread is premature but Shaw does not give me vibe of great indian batting talent.Gill - yes Rahul again yes despite struggles last two years but Shaw doesn't.Hes young and can always get better since he does have natural ability but technique is too lose right now.

I worry about Shaw.

He has been playing overseas since he was 13 years old, yet his technique is suitable only for straight bowling with no bounce.

He has fewer than 2200 First Class runs in his life, yet he’s already been convicted of one drugs offence.

Here is a man who needs a couple of years of red ball cricket only.

what early stats like this? lol
you're acting like he scored 2 double hundreds in his first two matches.
He made a 100 against WI at HOME. Hardly impressive

It is impressive for a 20 year kid to score century anywhere home or away. don’t measure everyone similar. This exposure will do a world of good , ofcourse he would have not played here if injuries had not happened ..

Many analysis based on hindsight. Whenever he fails, he has poor technique. It's gonna be a never ending battle, and ultimately, Shaw has scored big runs in his career so far, and isn't the only one struggling in NZ currently. So a bit of time and patience...

When?

Has he worked on his technique during his time away from the Indian team, or is it difficult to judge from performances in domestic franchise competitions? It does seem that he has regained his balance at the crease though.

A bit of both. Apparently he changed his technique a bit. He and Agarwal are sitting ducks against left fast bowlers swinging in

4,4,4,4,4,4: Prithvi Shaw becomes 2nd batsman after Ajinkya Rahane to smash 6 fours in 1 over (IPL)

He is an absolutely stunning player and has the same gift and Tendulkar and Lara. As I said on the first page of this thread 14-15 months back, him and Gill will be the two best batsmen in the world in a few years time.

Both are equal talents in my view with different strengths and weaknesses, although across formats, Shaw should eclipse Gill because he has more flair in white ball cricket.

The future of Indian batting couldn’t be in safer hands. The tradition of India producing ATG batsmen in every generation shall continue with this duo.

He may be crazy talented but at this moment he is overrated considering the fact he was hyped to the moon and compared to the greatest batsman of all time at age 16 before even debuting. Not his fault obviously. Those are impossible shoes to fill.
He'll come good for sure though. Rohit was compared to Sachin early in his career but it took A LOT OF discipline and hard work to get where he's at.
Shaw shouldn't take his talent for granted.

he is a cracking OID bat but cant say about premier position in Tests until he has done at least two more tours each in SENA

Okay, so when is he playing for India again?

He should be selected as third opener for our Indian WT20 team ahead of Shikhar Dhawan. Alongside Rohit and Kohli, he will compliment very well. Rohit takes a bit of time initially while Shaw can go boom boom right away so that will complement each other very well.

In tests, he is overrated as he has a very poor technique vs moving ball and is not good enough to play as specialist batsman in overseas conditions. His fielding is also pretty awful. If he can keep wickets, he can be a good sidekick replacement for Pant when Pant is injured or taking rest. :inti

He is no sidekick, the guy is a prodigy, he will be a permanent member of our test squad in the coming years.
I still think his best position is no 5 where he can play against the old ball.

One of the worst player I have seen when it comes to shot selection. On numerous occasions, he gets out batting like a hack.

An absolute failure outside India.

Below are his averages in IPL whenever he plays outside India :-

Abu Dhabi - 6
Sharjah - 22
Dubai - 17

I think he must learn from his senior countrymen- Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer and Ravi Ashwin on how to bat sensibly and with responsibility.

Not great. His problems remain same as they were earlier. Score pretty 30s & 40s and then get out, something which Gill too is guilty of. However Gill at least has a better batting technique than Shaw.

He should have been given chance on subcontinent pitches to gain enough confidence ..He is sehwag type player and will be an asset in long-term..

Delhi Capitals opener Prithvi Shaw is unlikely to available for the team's last two league matches as "he has just had this underlying fever for the previous couple of weeks", assistant coach Shane Watson said on Thursday. Shaw missed the team's last three matches and after its win against against Rajasthan Royals on Wednesday, DC skipper Rishabh Pant said the Mumbaikar could be suffering from typhoid.

Shaw, who has been down with a fever and admitted to a hospital, last played on May 1, against Lucknow Super Giants.

"I don't know his diagnosis exactly," Watson told the Grade Cricketer.

Should he be in India's ODI Squad?

Looks like sachin but plays like sehwag. He is probably the best basher option India have as an opener in whiteball.

His time will probably come after rohit, kohli, shikhar retirement.

His technical game is such that I will be surprised if he can have a career even worth the level of Rohit, Pant, Rahul, Pandya etc let alone comparison with the likes of Tendulkar, Kohli, Gavaskar or even Sehwag.

Just too many issues to figure out. Also, in the reckoning he is so behind that it is no longer funny even. For opener spot, he is behind Rohit, Shikhar, Rahul, Gill, Kishan, Mayank and Ruturaj now- 7 names for opener spot. :inti

A player that adds a lot of value to the team (esp LOIs). You need vibrant batters like him.

I see a bright future for this guy in LOIs.

No

A - fitness . His injuries have come at times he didn’t need them . But he doesn’t seem to have improved
B - needs a stellar ipl season to get into india t20
C - in two more years he will be there . His ability to have high STrike rate is what t20 team looking for . Technical issues are manageable . His timing is v v good

He has only played 1 ball in T20Is lol. If we can give Pant 51(and still counting) matches in T20I cricket even with a pathetic strike rate why can't we give atleast half of those to guys like Shaw, Kishan or Samson? :inti

Aren't you used to it already because one of your favorite player actually plays like this most of the time especially in LOIs? At least your tired eyes will get a break after looking at a new player repeating the same mistakes. :91: :inti

AB de Villiers batted like a modern day genuis in LOIs, he revolutionized modern day LOI cricket as he is the emperor of 360 degree batting. Please update your knowledge when talking about greats of the game and the only ODI batsman in the history of the game to average 50+ at strike rate of 100+ and smashed McGrath and co in World Cup 2007 for a 70 ball 92. :inti

Currently under dravid , the ipl performers are getting a good run

Hooda
Sampson
Tripathi
Pandya is back
Arshdeep singh

Shaw has lost form a bit . Also his slot is competing with rahul Rohit kishan and pant . None of them have been bad . Hard to find a place for him in t20 currently
Rituraj is also in wings

In odi , dhawan , rahul , Rohit and gill are frontline .
SRK is having a breakthrough season and sky is also seen as an opener .

He needs a breakthrough ipl season . Continued fitness . His time will come . He is far too talented to not be in one team .

After dhawan and Rohit’s retirement , he might get more chances . Or needs a purple cap in ipl .

He has turned out to be the Umar Akmal of this generation. Bats like a hack and has zero test hundred in SENA. As many as 7 openers are ahead of him in the country. :inti

Among all the young Indian players that were hyped, Shaw has comfortably been the worst and received the biggest fall compared to rest. His fielding/catching is worse than Kamran Akmal, fitness is worse than Sharjeel, technique is like Fawad Alam and mental toughness is like Asad Shafique. All in all a complete failure.

A big Lol at folks who hyped him as the next Lara/Tendulkar in making, I am sure some folks don't have problem with Shaw getting hyped as much as he has turned out to be a failure. Their problem is mostly with folks who got hyped and actually performed well to an extent that they become an integral part of the team. :inti

I would select Prithvi Shaw in the team as opener in Asia cup. It is almost certain that KL Rahul wont be match fit when Asia cup starts...so rather than going with make shift openers like Pant/SKY, we can have Shaw opening with Rohit.

What if KL doesn't get fit during T20 WC as well? So selecting Shaw now will be good choice to create back ups incase there is a mishap in October.

My team for Asia Cup:

Rohit
Shaw
Kohli
SKY
Pant
Pandya
Jadeja
Chahal
Harshal/Bishnoi
Bumrah
Bhuvi

Tendulkar & Lara?

He is just a 22 year old baby in international cricket. He has got plenty of time in his hands. He has played a grand total of just 12(5 tests, 6 ODIs, 1 T20Is) in his career. It is pretty sure he is not the darling of team management at the moment like some other guys who keep getting chances after chances even with average stats. :inti

Looks like you didn't followed the England ODI series decider or maybe forgot that. Nevertheless, highlights are still available, you can go watch that and it might be embarassing for you to accept then :91: :inti

I watched that. It took him 26 matches to play an inning like that but you didn't complain once before that. And here you can be seen going after Shaw left, right and center just because Mamoon thinks he is a combination of Tendulkar and Lara. Once again you had no problem when he compared Pant with Gilly so early in his career too. :91:

It seems you hate Shaw from the bottom of your heart. He is just a 22 year old baby in international cricket. He can be a failure like Pant is in T20Is but at least let him play even half of whatever matches Pant has played for India in T20s. :))

I am not someone who hypes players here. I always believe players should get enough opportunities to showcase their talent and that should be given consistently not just here and there. Guys like Samson, Kishan, Shaw haven't played enough matches. :inti

Haha, rofl! That's pretty rich this is coming from a guy who has been the biggest hater of anything good that happens in Indian cricket. We all know the hate that you have towards Indian player which is not just from the bottom of the heart but left right and centre as well lol.. :)) It is pretty hilarious that folks like you have the audacity to talk about this. What an absolute joke :)))

Coming to Pant, he has won his team one of the greatest test matches ever. He cannot be compared with some other unproven player for the start. This thing you need to get into your mind the earlier as possible or else keep eating humble pies as usual :91: :inti

Another embarassing IPL season fro Shaw..

From being overhyped as next Tendulkar- Lara, he seems to be ending up the Umar Akmal way.
The style of batting he demonstrates, the right term for him would actually be "Gareebon Ka Afridi". :inti :facepalm

I don't have problem with players being hyped. Our projection is based on their potential. At the end of the day it is upto the batsman to iron out weaknesses and show improvement.

And then we have certain folks bashing some other young player every single match they fail for like 3-4 years regularly and also calling their defenders who made this projection too based on potential as hypocrites. :facepalm

Prithvi Shaw thinks he’s a star, should learn from Shubman Gill: Karsan Ghavri

If Shubman Gill’s career graph has gone in an upward direction, his U-19 teammate Prithvi Shaw has plunged to rock bottom. Shaw played the first six games of the season for the Delhi Capitals, scoring 12, 7, 0, 15, 0 and 13, before he was dropped. He returned for the last two games, and scored a fifty but never found that tempo in his batting.

Shaw finished the IPL with 106 runs in eight matches.Shubman Gill smashed three centuries in his last four innings and has the Orange Cap now, for a total of 851 runs so far, scored at an average of 60.78 and strike rate of 156.43.

Former India pacer Karsan Ghavri says the fortunes are contrasting as Gill has worked “tirelessly on his batting,” while Shaw “hasn’t”.

“They were in the same team that won the U-19 World Cup in 2018, right? Today where is Prithvi Shaw and where is Shubman Gill? They are in two different categories,” Ghavri told The Indian Express.

“Shaw thinks he is a star and nobody can touch him. But he needs to understand that at the international level, irrespective of whether you are playing T20, 50 over or the Test match or even the Ranji Trophy, it takes only one delivery to get you out.

“You require discipline and a good temperament. You need to constantly work on yourself. You are required to occupy the crease, and if you do that, you are bound to get more runs,”
Ghavri said.

Ghavri feels Shaw should learn from Gill and must work on his technique and fitness.

“They are of the same age. Nothing has been lost yet. Gill has worked on his flaws, while Shaw hasn’t. He still can. He needs to work hard; otherwise, there is no point having so much potential,” he says.

Ghavri is not the only one, who has slammed Shaw for his batting and work ethics. Former New Zealand pacer Simon Doull that the Mumbai batter needs to work on his technique and fitness.

“I pointed out the glitch in his batting in 2018 and till now, I can see the same. No change. You can’t continue down the same road. If things aren’t working, you have to change them up, and he has to understand where he is at in his game. It’s just not good enough. I don’t think he is fit. I don’t think he has really adjusted his game as such and he has paid the price,” Doull had said on Cricbuzz after Shaw’s lean phase in the early part of the tournament.

At the start of the season, Delhi Capitals head coach Ricky Ponting had high hopes for Prithvi Shaw and even said that this will be opener’s biggest season in the IPL. Ponting admitted that Shaw failed to live up to his potential.

“I actually came out and publicly said on record that he might be our standout player throughout the tournament, but that hasn’t worked out,” he said after Shaw was dropped following a string of poor scores.

“It was six games this season, I think six or seven games in the back end of the last season. I think it is 13 games (12) since Prithvi has made a fifty while opening the batting,” Ponting had said. “We needed to find that spark at the top of the order, and Prithvi has failed to give us that start.”

'I was really scared for my life, I thought they would kill me' - Prithvi Shaw opens up on pub brawl involving influencer Sapna Gill

Prithvi Shaw is one of the most talented cricketers in the Indian domestic circuit. After scoring a Test century on his international debut in 2018, it was expected that the Mumbai batter would go from strength to strength. However, he has just played five Tests, six ODIs, and a solitary T20I thus far. It has been over two years since he last played for India.

While some technical shortcomings have hampered Shaw's progress, he has also been involved in some controversies that must have taken a toll on his mental well-being. One such controversy popped up when social media influencer Sapna Gill accused him of physical assault and molestation after an unpleasant turn of events took place at a pub in Mumbai last year.

In the same vein, recently, Prithvi Shaw opened up on the incident, recalling that he was sitting alongside his friends next to Gill's table at Barrel Club in Mumbai. The right-handed batter claimed that the latter's group asked for selfies and he obliged. He went on to say that a few moments later, a couple started shooting a video without his consent. This is when the manager asked Gill and Co. to leave. However, when Shaw and his friends stepped out of the club, they saw the young woman waiting with a baseball bat in her hand.

"I was at Barrel Club inside the Sahara Star Hotel in Mumbai with 7-8 friends. 4-5 people sitting on the adjoining table came up to me for selfies, and I obliged. But they came back again because the pictures they took came out to be blurred, so I took the selfie again. Then came a couple who put their arms around my shoulder and started making a video without asking me," Shaw said about the incident on News24.

"The manager then asked them to leave the club. Then I also exited after some time from the hotel's front gate. But the girl (Sapna Gill) was standing outside with a baseball bat. They were not looking like normal human beings, the way they all were waiting for me outside. They were on something else," he stated.

Shaw said that his BMW car was attacked with baseball bats. He revealed that he stepped out of the car to take the bat from Gill's hand and stop her from causing further damage, which was captured in a video that went viral in no time on social media.

"They attacked my car with a baseball bat while I was slowing down at a CISF check post. They started attacking the windshield and hit it 3-4 times, I was scared of the glass breaking. Then I had to get out of the car with the intention of taking the baseball bat out of her hands otherwise she would have completely ruined my car. So I snatched the baseball bat from her, and that video got viral after she posted it. Only that part was posted," Shaw continued.

"I wanted to leave the matter and exit from that place because they were on something, and I did not want my name to be dragged into all of this. So I left in my friend's car while my BMW was still there, which my other friends told me will get back home," he added.

Furthermore, Shaw also admitted that he was very scared during the incident and felt that the group would go to the extent of killing him. Thereafter he took the legal route despite his reputation being put to test in the public domain.

"I was really scared for my life, I thought they would kill me. For the first time in my life, I was so scared. Then we filed the complaint, even though I knew my name would be dragged into it. But I knew that we did not do anything wrong so we filed the complaint," Shaw continued to explain his apprehensions.

Prithvi Shaw was also accused of molestation and physical assault. However, the police later told a Mumbai court that the charges were baseless. Shaw clarified that his friends had not touched Gill and her group but they tried to change the narrative in their favour.

"They got out and completely flipped their narrative as the girl who was attacked my car started accusing us of beating her. My friends did not even touch the girl, you can check all the cameras present there," Shaw concluded.

The 24-year-old is expected to be fit in time for the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). A strong performance in the 10-team tournament could bring him back in contention for a national team comeback.

"My Aim Is To...": Prithvi Shaw's No Nonsense Take After Scripting Historic 1st In Indian Cricket

Young batter Prithvi Shaw, on just his second game after return to action after a six-month-long injury lay-off, smashed a century in his second innings for Mumbai to put them on top against Chhattisgarh in their Ranji Trophy Group B fixture in Raipur on Friday. He struck 18 boundaries and three sixes in his knock of 159 off just 185 deliveries. The opener reached the three-figure before lunch and in the process became the first Indian to score two centuries in the opening session on day one of a first-class cricket match. He had achieved a similar feat against Assam en route to his 383-ball 379, which was the second-highest Ranji Trophy score of all time.

During an interaction, Shaw revealed that he was a bit anxious and pessimistic about his return to action. Shaw said that he feared whether he'll be able to bat like he used to before his injury. Notably, Shaw had picked up a knee injury while playing for Northamptonshire in the County Championship.

"I wanted to do well but somewhere I wondered whether I would be able to bat in my style or not. Kaise kheloonga (how will I play), when I would make a comeback and whether it will be on a good note or not. These were the thoughts which were going around. But after I stayed for a few hours, things became normal," Shaw told The Indian Express.

Shaw further opened up that doing "match simulation" helped him overcome the strange feeling.

"I wasn't nervous but the feeling was a bit ajeeb (strange) when I resumed my batting. However, I did a match simulation and was motivating myself that everything will be fine. My body language was fine," he added.

While his century has intensified talks of a possible return to the Indian Test side, Shaw emphasised that he is currently focused on helping Mumbai win the Ranji Trophy.

"I'm not thinking too far off and want to stay in the present. There is no expectation, I'm happy that I'm back playing cricket. I have just come back after injury and just want to give my best. My aim is to win the Ranji Trophy for Mumbai and I'm trying to achieve that by contributing as much as I can going ahead," he further explained.

Coming back to the match, Shaw reached the three-figure before lunch and in the process became the first Indian to score two centuries in the opening session on day one of a first-class cricket match.

He had achieved a similar feat against Assam en route to his 383-ball 379, which was the second-highest Ranji Trophy score of all time.

Genuinely wasted potential. Compared with Sachin for right reasons. But he lost his way for whatever reason. He was supposed to be direct replacement of Sehwag.

He was talented but was hyped too much for his own good. Can still make a place in the team but has to be absolutely on top of his game to leap frog many already in line to get a chance.

Innings : 44
Runs : 456
Dismissals : 20

Former Pakistan pacer Wasim Akram spoke about Shaw's struggles in the ongoing IPL 2024 season during an interview with a sports digital media outlet:

“I haven't watched him closely this year, but he has to go back to basics, play first-class cricket and score big. Focus on cricket, not parties.”

“He has still got plenty of cricket in him, just go back and play first-class cricket. Get a lot of centuries and make a comeback. That's the only way. There's no shortcut. He has got time on his hands, and that's good for him.”

“He has to play regularly, and look at himself off the field. Do as many parties as you want after you retire, who cares. But now, focus on cricket.”

Make no mistake, only in Bharat he’s being neglected. He can still be a top opener for most international teams. The guy is gifted.

If I go by my faulty memory, I think he was doing ok in International cricket until he twisted his leg while fielding in Australia. Then Gill replaced him and that unfortunately the turning point. He then got bald, fielding suffered, grew tummy and then gradually disappeared from the selector's radar.

Injury derailed his career completely

Still pretty young to make a solid comeback but competition for opening slots in india is tougher than cracking UPSC exam.
