[VIDEOS] Quinton de Kock to retire from ODI cricket after conclusion of the 2023 World Cup

A case of full stomach. He has enough resources, and luxury. Thus, he “choose” not to “work” there.

I obviously envy him, as I chase every work, and cannot afford to “choose” which work. A case of unsatisfied stomach. Much like many common man here?

There’s no pride in representing SAF anymore if you’re white. You can’t have an opinion, he didn’t want to bend the knee and got antagonized for it. Inferior players being selected just because they are a darker shade. What kind of culture is that? No wonder he wants to make a quick buck and be on his merry way.

More white cricketers need to follow suit to teach the SA cricket board a lesson. Give equal rights or continue mixing cricket with politics.

According to the sport 24 article, he said there are multiple reasons: https://www.news24.com/sport/cricke...tors-played-role-in-shock-retirement-20211231

Playing for your country is not just "work"

Its an honour and priviledge that isnt bestowed to many Many in the past have solely played for the love of the sport and country

A lot of us ordinary folk would bite your hand off if we were given the chance to represent our country in cricket

Yes obviously everyone should earn well but beyond a certain point its just greed pure and simple and this is exactly the same Theres no reason why he couldnt continue Hes got a good gig with the IPL and has a contract with south africa Quinton is earning well

To do this just reeks of a player whos desire n motivation need to be questioned

Retiring at 29 and obviously TC is not the ultimate test of skills for him. for all guys jumping up and down about Virat kohli , at least he has his priorities and TC is the top for his priorities. the same with Aus, eng, nz, pak etc. In the pre IPL days i can remember a guy called Chris Drumm from NZ who retired in early 20's to start a travel company. But coming back to dekock - pathetic, selfish decision and all that chatter about wantinng to spend more time with young family is bakwaas.

Give me a break. Cricket is still just a sport and does nothing for your country in the long run. Pride and honour lmao, you think it's the same as serving in the military or what?

https://www.newindianexpress.com/sport/cricket/2021/dec/31/other-players-might-now-do-a-quinton-de-kock-and-retire-early-says-shocked-alviro-pietersen-2401720.html

Quinton de Kock's sudden retirement from Test cricket has shocked former South Africa opener Alviro Petersen who feels more players might follow in the footsteps of the wicketkeeper-batter in the near future.

At just 29 years of age and after having played 54 Tests, de Kock announced his retirement from the traditional format at the end of the opening Test against India, which the Proteas lost by 113 runs at SuperSport Park on Thursday.

De Kock would, however, be be available for ODIs and T20s in future.

"To be honest, I am a bit shocked by his decision," said Petersen, who played in 36 Tests for South Africa, scoring five centuries, largely as opening partner to Graeme Smith.

"During the lunch break of day five in Centurion, I noticed that he was not quite 100 percent because Quinny is a player who likes to play his shots," Pietersen was quoted as saying by timeslive.co.za. "Often when there is stuff happening with family or you are on a long tour, one foot is always on the plane and I had the sense that with him it was almost like one foot was already at home."

A former Test captain, de Kock said he will continue playing in the white-ball formats for the Proteas, with a lot of focus on franchise-based T20 leagues.

"I am surprised but you can also understand that all the lucrative T20 leagues around the world and The Hundred (franchise 100-ball cricket tournament in the UK) now have changed the mindset of players," Petersen said.

"In the past, Test cricket was the pinnacle and slowly that is being changed with guys looking after their financial wellbeing. Priorities have changed and he won't struggle to get a T20 or The Hundred contract," he added.

De Kock has featured for Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals, Royal Challengers Bangalore and Mumbai Indians in the IPL.

Its more than just a job for many

Growin up playing for your country is prestigious and many are keen to emulate their heroes and go down in history

Why some dont want to take hundreds of test wickets or make thousands of test runs and put their name in lights for ever ill never understand

No ones gonna remember who took the most IPL wickets or made the most runs

Nobody cares about remembering. Cricket is a professional sport and is the only way to earn money for cricketers. Players don't care who remembers them if it doesn't feed their family. Stop being sentimental over a sport lol.

Representing one’s country at the highest level in any field is a huge privilege.

Totally agree with every word of your post.

I reckon QDK is only interested in t20s or franchise cricket now. I've hated how both t20s and franchise cricket have destroyed or downgraded the real cricket.

On the other hand we can't say QDK looked disinterested in the Pak test series, his heart was never in it. Retire in peace i say.

Yup and privilege. There are hundreds of young black boys who will never have the same chance as this entitled brat.

It also shows their contempt for the country just because they don't rule it anymore. Nobodybasks why they have a quota system. It's to ensure that everyone gets an equal chance because its so unequal in favour of whites right now.

This was in the making after he refused to take the knee as per CSA instruction.

I respect the man for resigning on principle.

He hasnt resigned on principle If he did he wouldnt be available for the limited overs format

A step in the right direction. No one should be forced to adopt a political view.

True no one should be forced Therefore he shouldve retired full stop from intnl cricket

Here he wants his cake and to eat it too

Why else would anyone want thier cake and not eat it? When you have a slice of cake is it because you do not want to eat it?

He is playing the game. Rightly so.

Time to teach wokism a lesson.

Pretty sure this retirement will increase his playing days and increase the number of T20 franchise pay days.

It's easier said than done.

A lot of people having a go at QdK for choosing money, but most of us in the same situation would do the same.

He wants to maximize his earnings, QdK wont be playing cricket forever and clearly he doesn't like the rigors of travel and being away on tours especially now with COVID around. It makes sense for him and I can't fault him for it, more players will do the same.

very true.
Especially the last line - most IPL scores and wickets will be forgotten half an hour after that match but what one does in test cricket remains in most's minds and defines legacies.
And yes, wearing the cap and representing ones country is an ultimate honor and dream - a priviledge most on this forum would give anything to achieve. The likes of Q de K have earnt lots of money and now their priorities are reset. Which is why i respect vk more- he has tc as priorities same with eng, pak, aus, nz players.

Quinton is creating a scene almost every month. I would have dropped him from all formats after that Pakistan tour.

Agree with every post of Zaz in this thread.

pretty embarrassing, don't care who but mid tour abandoning & retiring. It's a coward move especially when you're staying in other formats, SA should take a stand, its far too common especially when he isn't what he thinks he is

on another note
how the mighty SA have fallen

Steyn/Kallis/Amla/Philander/Morkel/Smith/AB

To spend more time with family? No chance.

Expect to see him playing in the BBL next year. Hopefully the PSL too.

The wicket-keeper and one of the best batsmen in the team in his prime retiring from the format and abandoning his country in the middle of a massive series against India citing "family time"?

Ridiculous timing from the man-child, regardless of the merits of the decision. Such talent gone to waste with a hollow head.

Seems all is not well between De Kock and CSA. He failed to take knee as well for BLM. Really sad to see that CSA has become more of political body and their cricket going towards Zim route. Sad would not be able to see him in test cricket now .

You are right to make a link to Black Lives Matter. But you are not really grasping how this works in the case of Quinton De Kock.

Black Lives Matter is not really political in South Africa, except for some whites and Indians. The point is that the inequality from Apartheid means that black kids are born with huge disadvantages compared with white kids. Even now, the black players in the national team are the sons of the black elite (Dr Rabada's son) or won scholarships for sporting reasons to go to exclusive white schools (Ngidi, Bavuma).

Quinton De Kock is not terribly smart. He might just scrape an IQ of 100 - Kohli would be 115, Cummins would be 120, Babar would be 100). But he has always had no attention span and at school his teachers were incredibly frustrated with his disinterest in learning anything.

Amongst the generation of De Kock's parents - people born in the era 1955-1975, who lived 20-40 years under Apartheid - many people miss the days of safe streets and less crime. The crime, of course, comes from inequality, with angry young black men resentful of white people continuing to effectively live better lives because their parents stole the country's wealth, and have passed it on to their kids.

Think of old cricketers like Pat Symcox, born in 1960 and resident near Durban (a part of the country with wealthy white English speakers (not Afrikaaners) and Indians, and poor Zulus. Symcox, probably like many of De Kock's parents' generation, is on record grumbling that there is effectively inadequate recognition of the murders of white farmers in South Africa.

And we all know that FARM KILLINGS was what De Kock had in mind when he refused to take the knee.

De Kock is precisely the kind of man whose news comes from what his own social group tells him, and what his Facebook feed delivers to him.

The stats are as follows:

54-74 white farmers killed per year out of 5 million whites.
20,000 blacks killed per year out of 54 million blacks.

The reality, as smarter and better-informed white South Africans like FAF du Plessis know, is that white farmers are 25 times LESS LIKELY to be murdered than the average black South African.

But to the likes of Pat Symcox, and presumably Quinton De Kock, they only see their race being mistreated.

It has been easy to see De Kock get more and more disgruntled in recent years. He clearly doesn't feel that he belongs in the new South Africa.

I disagree with other posters who claim that being in the armed forces is in some ways more "national duty" than playing for your country. For most elite sportsmen it's exactly the same thing. Look at how Lionel Messi took winning his first international trophy last year - it clearly meant more to him than anything he ever did at Barcelona.

Quinton De Kock doesn't have that. He doesn't like what his country is becoming, and he has almost certainly heard a "white version" of South Africa under Apartheid.

So it gets reduced to money. And unlike in football or rugby, money in cricket is hoarded for Indian, Australian and English players, and South African (and Kiwi, and West Indian) players basically earn peanuts playing for their country.

Luis Suarez is from little Uruguay and Antoine Griezmann is from France. But the two Atletico Madrid players earn almost exactly the same amount of money each year.

De Kock is essentially identical as a player to Rishabh Pant: mediocre catcher, great attacking strokeplayer, roughly as intelligent as his pads. If anything, De Kock is the better player of the two. But there it all ends. It's not really work De Kock playing for his country any more than to keep himself in the shop window for the IPL.

I just think he is a point in his life where cricket is not the most important thing, not everyone has the passion that drives them to keep playing cricket. Sometimes people put their families or other interests before cricket and are happy to just do what they enjoy.

Agree with almost everything except the comparison with Pant.

You will understand in a few years that Pant will play innings that even de Kock will not dream of.

De Kock's step mother is black, his father married a colored person,

I would appreciate if you stop lying about South African Whites, and keep your racist views to yourself.

"White farmers in South Africa have the most dangerous job in the country, are twice as likely to be murdered than police and are killed at four times the rate of the wider community..."

"This follows 82 killings and 423 attacks in 2016, though none of the figures can be verified because the South African government has refused to release farm murder statistics since 2007."

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...ricas-white-farmers-likely-killed-police.html

The only people who stole from South Africa, are his people - the English. Junaids knows nothing of SA, or its culture.

I suppose we have a very different view of SA whites, mainly due to apartheid.
Can you point us to any article/documentary explaining your pov and the difference between Afrikaaner and British in SA.

Jos Buttler insists he is committed to a future in Test cricket and is not planning to give up on the format after the disappointment of the Ashes.

Buttler has averaged just 19.20 with the bat, culminating in a dreadful dismissal in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne, and has dropped several catches behind the stumps, including a shocker in Adelaide.

That stands in stark contrast to his thrilling displays in the recent Twenty20 World Cup, where he smashed Australia for 71 not out in just 32 balls and followed up with an unbeaten century against Sri Lanka.

England could make the decision for him after 56 often frustrating appearances punctuated by a few reminders of his ball-striking brilliance, with Surrey's Ben Foakes waiting in the wings.

But Buttler has no intention of jumping ship to become a full-time white-ball specialist.

Speaking ahead of the New Year Test in Sydney, which begins on Wednesday, Buttler restated his commitment to all three formats.

"It's certainly my ambition. I don't think I'd have put as much into it as I have done if it wasn't," he said.

"I have fantastic family support – they're very supportive of me and my career and make a lot of sacrifices for that. That's one thing that gives you a lot of motivation and drive to try to make it all worth it. It's certainly maintained my drive and ambition to try and play.

"At the moment, I feel I've got that support, and I'm in a place where I want to try to make it work. All I'm focusing on at the moment is turning up in Sydney and practicing well.

England surrendered the Ashes in embarrassing fashion in Melbourne, blitzed for 68 all out in their second innings to slump 3-0 behind in just 12 days of cricket. A tour that has lurched from disappointment to disappointment literally since ball ...

"There's an overriding sense of disappointment and frustration with the situation we've found ourselves in. It's still quite raw. We certainly don't want to be a team to lose 5-0. There's a hell of a lot to play for."

Asked if he also hoped to be picked for the West Indies series in March, England's first chance to put their Ashes woes behind them, he said: "Yes, I hope so."

The questions came against a backdrop of Quinton de Kock's surprise retirement from South Africa's Test side.

The parallels between the two men are clear – both wicketkeeper-batters, both limited-overs stars, both within two years of each other, with De Kock the younger at 29.

"That's Quinton's own personal situation, but as a fan of cricket and a huge fan of his, I'm disappointed that he's at that stage," said Buttler.

"I love watching him bat, keep wicket and play Test cricket. The world of cricket will miss him in that format. But I guess I commend him for making a decision that's right for him."

After three crushing defeats in a row at the hands of Australia, England's hopes of regaining the urn are over with two games still to play and this winter's trip looks set to be a watershed moment for the team.

Those in leadership positions – from head coach Chris Silverwood to captain Joe Root and their higher-ups at the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) – have already come under scrutiny, but there has been plenty of blame to go around inside the dressing room too.

Buttler was widely criticised for his decision to aim a wild shot at Nathan Lyon in the final over before tea at the MCG, arguably the worst among a handful of self-inflicted errors in England's first innings.

It is an example of the kind of fearless aggression that makes him such a destructive prospect in the T20 arena, but was hopelessly misjudged in the context of the match.

"I think in hindsight, just before a tea break is obviously a poor time to get out, but I wanted to be attacking and positive in that innings," he said.

"Mid-on and mid-off were up. I saw that as an opportunity to score, I didn't execute that. That's all it is. I think you have to be able to (move on) as an international player, both when you've done well and poorly.

"I was pretty shocked. But sitting down with Quiney (Quinton de Kock), he explained his reasons and I respect and fully understand his decision," Elgar said at a virtual press conference on the eve of the second Test.

"I don't think there will be any," Elgar responded when asked if there be any hangover on the players about his retirement.

"The responsibility for us is to carry and conduct ourself as international players. We still have to be professional around this. We still have a Test series to level, so I don't think there will be any hangover or shock over Quiney's retirement."

"Players respect the environment. We realise that we had a few setbacks in recent times and we need to obviously have to be clever around it and get over it. I don't see this affecting the players of still being shocked about his retirement."

Fair point by Salman Butt:

==

"Quinton de Kock had been playing strange cricket for the last year and a half. He came to Pakistan as captain but did not continue in the role afterwards"

"Now, after playing one Test, he has announced his (Test) retirement. Such things spoil the team’s balance, the selection policy and affect the captain’s mindset."

"Players have made sudden retirement a drama. Don’t you think of family when you play overseas leagues for nearly 2 months? Why is it that only Test cricket comes in the way? You are playing cricket in your own country in South Africa. This lack of interest is related to league cricket"

I wonder if SA will pull together better as a unit in this second Test without the shadow of a guy who blatantly doesn’t want to be there hanging over the dressing room. Time will tell!

You are wrong. These players are professionals and it is a job for them. They will not play for the country if there was no money. Common man like us are no different than them. One-off charity or one-off patriotic event is understandable but a career needs money, and these players get loads of them.

He has choices in life, and that includes not playing test cricket. Choices are often created due to ample resources and luxury. He is very very secure and thus, he can choose not to play test cricket. He does not represent the common man, and thus he can choose when to work or not....

You are wrong, for most its not soley a job in the traditional sense Yes money is important but not the only reason When kids first take up sport its not due to the money aspect

Yes Its his choice if he doesnt want to play test cricket but then just be straight up dont give me rubbish n take us for fools about wanting to spend more time with family etc whilst he plays leagues around the world

He wont be missed anyway Always seemed as a person whos carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders n someones whos unhappy in his own skin

It seems like a sore loser’s retirement worked great for the Proteas as they managed to rediscover their courage, team spirit and pride.

Possible. De Kock hasn't been scoring much runs either.

I know Verreynne hasn't done much yet but I still believe he is a very very good prospect for South Africa. Look at his domestic stats. He is a gun.

And now there is Ryan Rickelton coming through as well.

Hope de Kock enjoys a couple of years in irrelevant T20 leagues before he fades away into obscurity.

Good riddance, sorry excuse of a human being. Cut from the same cloth as AB. When the going gets tough they disappear. We don't need people like that, no individual(s) can ever be bigger than the country. We're better off without

de Kock abandons his teammates halfway through a series yet they go on to win without him.

Elgar post-match: "Helps to have a group that doesn't have any real big names, they like to rally together and play as one. And that's crucial. Extremely proud of this group of players that we have here."

Agree, they are a better team without QDK.

Both AB and QDK are very weak excuses for men.

QDK in an in

Your retirement from Test cricket came as a shock. Has that been influenced by the proliferation of T20 leagues and its growing relevance?

Not really... It’s just a matter of a lot of cricket and time spent away from home. But obviously retiring from Test cricket has opened up opportunities and I will take them if I am available… I will sit down and discuss with the family if I will play in different leagues or not... I’m not 30 yet and wish to play as long as I can. So it’s just about managing myself.

Do you think more players will switch to franchise leagues and give up playing for their country considering the lucrative deals available?

Yes, I definitely think so. I think anybody in these sort of situations would do it. It’s hard to say ‘no’ to some of the contracts that are put forward compared to what your country gives you. So it’s natural that this will happen. That’s the way it’s going to go.

Do you think in another 10 years, Test cricket will lose relevance and T20 and ODI cricket will attract the players?

To be honest, I am not too sure. We as players try not to say no to Test cricket. You see the English guys put a lot of emphasis on Test cricket. And they are not the only ones... There are a couple of others too trying to put a lot of emphasis on Tests. As long as the players and the people supporting Tests are together in it, I am sure it will stick around for longer than we think.

The lure of the IPL got to QDK. Of course, all the nonsense that is going on in SA cricket only made his decision easier. He is still play white ball for SA. But not sure for how long.

As far as test cricket being relevant in 10 years. That would be a resounding yes. But I cannot help but think of the possibility that test cricket could also be be hanging by a thread. Time will tell.

What a start to his WC campaign for QDK

zLwGDiI.png

Probably the most unpatriotic player to ever represent a Test nation

Haven't liked QDK since the cheap dummy runout of Fakhar two years ago. Seems quite snidey.

I can understand players retiring from Tests but now he's unavailable for 2 out of the 3 international formats.

As Quinton is going to retire after the World Cup, it seems that he is currently playing his last ODI at home.

1694982275858.png

Today marked his last ODI on home soil, he only made 27 from 39 but South Africa still won the series after coming back from a 2-0 deficit. So in some way it was a good ending for him at home.

But let's see what he can do in the WC. Imran Khan was 40 in 1992 so QDK saying his body feels like 40 is no excuse for not winning it :ROFLMAO:

I dont know why south african players tend to retire so early, first it was Rilee Rossouw and now it is de Kock.

They have demands in T20 leagues. They can just retire, play T20, and make money.

Also, quota system in South Africa is probably not great for white players.
yeah that is quite a considerable point.

knowing that fact CSA seems to be negatively impacting their cricket.

Do people really enjoy watching non-international players perform in t20 leagues ? I have never been able to connect with such players. Maybe it's just me.

Same goes for QDK. I'll lose all interest in him when he goes full mercenary.

Quinton de Kock says he refused to take the knee at the 2021 T20 World Cup because of interference from Cricket South Africa (CSA).

QdK in a recent interview:

"We are not just pawns to CSA"

"We all had a choice, when the Black Lives Matter thing came up, the team, we all discussed it,"

"We thought as a team, we can all have our own views on it"

"A couple of us made a decision not to get on the knee, but we were in support of the guys who were because we understand their background."

He is the most irresponsible and selfish player I have ever seen. As most of SA cricketers he has lost the desire to play for SA anymore. Franchise Cricket and Kolpak contracts has destroyed Quality of SA Cricket.

Quinton de Kock gets to his 50 in 61 balls. This is his last World Cup as he is gonna be retiring after this World Cup is over. Excellent knock from him. How many runs will he make in his last tournament?

I don't think even he cares how many he will score. He and his LSG fans will be more interested in how much he scores for LSG! :)

Going forward, LSG is his home.

Dream start for him in this WC before he retires. Hope he end on a high. He is always a pleasure to watch

Australia vs South Africa, 10th Match. Quinton de Kock has scored his 2nd 50-plus score in the 2nd match of South Africa's World Cup campaign. He scored a century against England in their World Cup opener and today he has scored another 50. What an absolute class from this boy, making his last World Cup memorable.

2 centuries in a row for him and he is now the leading run scorer in this WC
He is looking better than ever

He’s on a mission.

This is a Kockworldcup

Lol watch him fail against India.

You think he will retire from international duties just for IPL and then perform against India? No way

SA will be playing with like 7 players against India. I feel sympathy for Bavuma.

This is how to bat at the top of the innings in ODIs.

Set the tone for the innings and don't throw it away when you are set.

What a stunning way to start the final tournament of your ODI career. 2 century in 2 matches. WOW
