The Pakistan Cricket Board has launched the first-ever Inter-College Ramadan T20 Cup, which is set to take place in Lahore, Karachi and Islamabad involving a total of 30 colleges. In Lahore, the tournament will commence from 22 March, while tournament matches in Islamabad and Karachi will commence from 23 March.

With this T20 tournament, the PCB intends to popularise the game among students and also scout young talent for the future.

The tournament will be organised with the help of the respective regional bodies involving Lahore Regional Cricket Association (LRCA), Karachi Regional Cricket Association (KRCA) and Islamabad Regional Cricket Association (IRCA), through an organising committee formed by the aforementioned regions and endorsed by the PCB.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi: “We are thrilled to announce the inaugural Ramadan Inter-College T20 tournament to foster cricket talent within educational institutions. This tournament expresses our commitment to the game development at the grassroots level.

“The spirit of Ramadan, combined with the excitement of T20 cricket, promises an electrifying atmosphere on the field.

“Our vision extends beyond just cricket and through this tournament, we hope to encourage students to pursue both academic excellence and sporting achievements.

“By hosting this tournament in Lahore, Karachi, and Islamabad, we aim to provide a platform for young cricketers from diverse backgrounds to showcase their skills and passion for the game.”

Director – Domestic PCB Abdullah Khurram Niazi: “We are organising this tournament, as per the vision of the Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi, to increase the outreach of the game to a vast majority of the students who normally find it tough to juggle between playing cricket and their studies.

“I am confident this tournament will also bring some exciting talent to the forefront as well while providing young students the opportunities to prove their mettle on the cricket field.”

The tournament will see a total of 10 teams participating in each city. These teams will be divided into two groups while the top team of each group will play the final. Each team will play four matches in the pool stage while a total of 21 matches will be played in each city. Each team will have a squad of 14 players and additionally three reserve players, along with three officials.

The participation rules for the players involve an age bracket where a player born on or after 1 September 2000, will be eligible to take part in this Inter-Collegiate T20 tournament. To take part in the tournament a player must be a bonafide student of the respective college.

The umpires officiating the games will be from PCB’s panel of Umpires.

The winning team in each city will be awarded a cash prize of PKR 500,000 while the runners-up in each city will bag PKR 250,000.

Also, during the tournament, the PCB selectors will be at the venues to closely monitor the performances of the players.

Is T-20 Cricket really the way to go for youngsters? Pakistan should be looking to produce technically competent and correct players at any early age and once a strong base is established only then focus on power, strength and shot selection.

Good but it erodes the temperament of young cricketers regarding long term format.

This is a good idea. Hope it's successful.

I think college kids are maybe a section of the population that have started to drift away from cricket. Perhaps this will ignite the passion in them again.

We need players coming through from colleges because low IQ ones from the villages are like factory workers, can't think outside of the box and lack the creativity to evolve their skills.

Good step to promote cricket at the college level. There can be many players who can come to the limelight because of this.

Safeer Azam, the younger brother of Babar Azam, scored 15 off 19 in his first match at the Ghani Glass Ramadan tournament
I think it was his first outing on live TV. Did not go that well. Let's see what he is capable of.

Haider Ali is truly impressive at the Ramzan Ghani tournament. His amazing shots are a joy to watch, as he consistently hits the ball perfectly in the middle of the bat.

During Ramadan, street cricket in Karachi is decreasing, so players are moving to indoor venues. Former cricket pros back this change, seeing it as a chance for better training. Parents approve safer play areas. Young talents prefer indoor cricket for skill improvement. This shift shows Karachi's move towards organized cricket and talent growth.

To be honest, the joy of playing on the streets is something different.

Another poor quality and lackluster tourney by PCB.

Btw, what is Razzaq doing playing this when it's meant to be for kids/youngsters.

Saw Safeer's batting a few snippets, just didn't seem like he's a cricketer more like a gully one.

Ramadan street cricket lights up Karachi after dark

It’s close to midnight but the floodlights are turned on in a Karachi town, drawing dozens of Pakistani men onto its streets for a tournament of Ramadan cricket.

Late night street cricket during the Muslim holy month is a tradition that dates back several decades, with Karachi being the hub of the lively matches.

Mohammad Bilal says night cricket helps them stay awake until Suhoor, the pre-dawn meal, which helps them with the day’s fast after.

"We are free in the night and we have to keep ourselves awake till the time of Suhoor. If we sleep, we can miss the Suhoor. If we miss Suhoor, it is difficult to fast,” Bilal said on Thursday.

Working hours during Ramadan are usually shorter in Pakistan so that people have a few hours to rest before they break their fast with an evening meal, called iftar, after sunset.

The game starts after Tarawih, or late night prayers, which ends about an hour ahead of midnight.

Tennis balls taped up with white tape are used in the game to give them more heft and visibility at night.

The tape is deftly stretched over the ball's surface to give it a smooth surface that produces greater bounce and speed. With this modification, the tape ball is less dangerous for street games than a conventional cricket, which has a cork core covered with twine layers and a leather shell.

Bilal says playing tape ball cricket helps keep them moving during the fasting month.

"People often sleep in the day during fasting, said Bilal. "Physical activity is essential for good health, that is walking and running, etc., and cricket covers all this."

On this Thursday in Lyari, one of Karachi's poor neighborhoods, some 200 spectators of mostly cheering fans who admire the players turned up to watch them bat and bowl through the night.

"I don't play but I watch it with great interest," said Muhammad Munaf.

"Some of these boys go to their jobs during the day while some others sleep during day time. They don't have much time on ordinary days but in Ramadan (they get to play in the night)."
