The Surrey all-rounder Sam Curran has been called into England’s Test squad for the first time as cover for Ben Stokes, who has a “tight left hamstring”.

England need to beat Pakistan at Headingley from Friday to share a series that started in horrible fashion with a nine-wicket defeat at Lord’s.

Stokes being doubtful does not help that cause. The totemic Durham all-rounder performed well with the ball at Lord’s and is a crucial cog for England, as shown in the 4-0 Ashes defeat this winter.

He picked up the injury fielding at training on Wednesday, and did not bowl in the session. He will be assessed on Thursday morning.

19-year-old Curran’s elevation is perhaps a fascinating insight into the new national selector Ed Smith’s thinking. Stokes will miss England’s second Test against India at Lord’s in August, to appear in caught having pleaded not guilty to a charge of affray for an incident in Bristol in the early hours of September 25 last year.

Curran is a whippy left-arm swing bowler who bats No7 in Championship for Surrey. He is not 20 until the third day of this Test match but is already into his fourth season of first team cricket for Surrey and has more than 100 first-class wickets. He was an unused member of England’s T20 squad for the tri-series in Australia and New Zealand over the winter.

There is no guarantee that Curran would play. Chris Woakes could come in for Stokes and bat below Jos Buttler, who would move to No6.

Yeah, I really don’t see England winning this Test match.

Stokes looked their best bowler last time with good lift and bounce.

Honestly, I’d be more wary of Curran than Stokes, he’s a top prospect, recently picked a 10-fer too.

To be frankly honest, he shouldn't be wearing the English jersey after that incident.

He’ll still be a 19 year old with jitters on debut.

But Pakistan have a habit with debutants... a bad one.

Takes a bit out of the batting if he's not fit.

Oh my, now this is a huge opportunity to win an away series for Pakistan.

I think England just found their "excuse" when we dish out an old fashioned beat down.

Obviously if Stokes was available this England side would have smashed us with Stokes scoring a double ton and then picking up a 10-fer and five catches in the slips and effecting two run outs.

He's a South African, so I would be wary. His brother Tom has already made headlines by destroying Australia in Australia in ODI's.

Pakistan does have a habit of giving great debuts to bowlers...

England must be weak if they are calling up teenagers now. I've seen a bit of Curran and he was good for a teenager, but I can't seem him doing anything at Test level. He's only 5'9" which is far too short to be successful in international cricket unless its as a part time bowler.

HASAN Ali is short too. You can’t just dismiss a bowler just because of his height

About time to make him a star. Pakistan is he best team to debut against. Let's see how he transforms into Imran Khan.

I don't particularly rate Hasan Ali...yet. That doesn't mean I won't in the future. From what I have seen, so far he seems to have gotten wickets with batsmen just having a slog for the most part.

English batsmen were out slogging in the recent Test? Which match were you watching?

Malcolm Marshall was 5'9 or 5'10 right?

Height helps but you can be good without it.

This is rather idiotic, if true. They can simply replace Stokes [if unfit] with Woakes. He can bowl and bat and has the Indian sign over Pakistan too.

Quite possible Woakes will replace Wood anyway. Infact if Curran plays it's pretty much guaranteed Woakes will be playing as well.

What a dramatic change in sentiment here on PP since the tour started. No one was giving Pakistan a change and now everyone thinks England will get swept 2-0. I hope team Pakistan is not as over confident as some of the posters over here.

Hey I always said one one . So this game is HUGE

Wood bowled well enough. They can simply replace Stokes with Woakes and keep Wood. No need for a debutant.

Would be far too light on batting. Everyone's a spot higher than they should be.

Buttler
Woakes
Bess
Wood
Broad
Anderson

If he plays, it would mean also recalling Woakes for Wood to lengthen the batting.

I guess he will play, as he will add new dimension to their bowling, i.e., left arm bowler.

He is definitely gonna play. if they are looking it that way. Although, I believe they should be playing woakes and wood both.. But that would be bad for PAKISTAN.

He will only play if England want to replace wood.
Woakes will replace stokes surely considering his record against pak.

If stokes is injured it would effect the balance of the england team quite a bit. :)

I’d rather play full strength England to be honest. Also, Pakistan have a tendency to make stars out of unknowns! You sense a fifer for Curran!

English batsmen were out slogging in the recent Test? Which match were you watching?

The one last week at Lord's. 2 of the 4 wickets were slogs. Root caught behind to a ball pitched 1.5 meters outside off stump and Wood or Anderson out slogging typical tailender shot.

Stokes has batted this morning in training but won’t bowl or field today.

A fitness test tomorrow morning will determine his availability for the Test.

People here are underrating Sam Curran. This guy will trouble our batsmen a lot with his inswingers to the right handers and away from the left handers.

England's Ben Stokes will have a scan on his hamstring later on Thursday as he attempts to prove his fitness for the second Test against Pakistan.

The all-rounder spent time in the nets on Thursday morning and was able to run at full intensity without any issues.

However, he will not take part in any bowling or fielding sessions and will undergo a fitness test before play starts at Headingley on Friday.

England slumped to a nine-wicket defeat in the first Test at Lord's.

Surrey's left arm seamer Sam Curran has been brought in as cover for Stokes - his first Test call-up.

But Curran is still a far better batsman than Wood and Bess.

Curran will be debuting and will be under immense pressure. No need doing that when you can play Wood and Woakes and avoid the act of including a debutant.

Also Bess is hardly a tail-ender either. Stats won't tell you everything.

Never play a debutant because they'll always be under pressure then? Bess is a decent number 9, him at 8 and Woakes at 7 are both a spot too high. We're loosing one of our better batsmen and that has to be compensated for.

No. Never play a debutant when you have to win and save face. If things go wrong they can easily point fingers at the debutant and claim inexperience as an excuse. It could shatter careers and dismantle ones future.

I know it's too soon, but there's nothing in his bowling that would worry me if I was a batsmen facing him.
Much of a muchness.

He'll probably get a couple of wickets of the lower order to seem like he's bowled well but he really wasn't needed. The damage has already been done.

He is ready for limited overs cricket in my opinion. Will challenge david willey's place in the team.
As long as Anderson, broad, woakes are there he would never get new ball which makes him lesser useful choice.
For test cricket England are better with grooming young quick bowler like josh tongue/ollie stone/ George garton etc in place of him.
Overall I think now England will look at him whenever stokes or woakes will get injured in all formats.

Probably because they're similar type bowlers. Other than that and age on his side, Curran still needs work to be a regular in any format. His brother is better and has much better armour.

Now this has been a blessing in disguise. Sam Curran has helped England avoid at least a couple of defeats. Can he do it again?

Sam Curran returns to the side in place of Jofra Archer for this second Test vs Pakistan, and he's into the attack in the 11th over. Will he pose a big problem for Pakistani batsmen?

Took Abid Ali's wicket!

Speaking on Sky:

"It has been quite tricky. You only ever know how ready you are when you get out onto the field. Yesterday I felt my rhythm got better as my spells went on - my first spell I felt I was struggling to swing it back so I spoke to Jimmy about it.

"We had some nice conditions to bowl in yesterday - it was quite humid and the ball did swing more as the day went on. There was some invariable bounce too so with weather around the pitch might not get too much sun but overheads might be there throughout the game."

Sam Curran in international Cricket this year so far:

Sam Curran on fire. Already claimed three wickets in 5 overs against West Indies in 2nd odi. Can he cause further decimation of WI batting line up? Only time will tell.looks unstoppable at the moment.

It seems like Sam Curran took the previous game against England very seriously.

In the 2nd ODI he bowled just 7 overs and conceded only 33 runs and took 3 wickets.

'Overpaid For Years': AB De VIlliers' Stunning Verdict On Expensive IPL Star

Legendary South African cricket team batter AB de Villiers said that England all-rounder Sam Curran has been 'overpaid for quite a few years now' in the Indian Premier League (IPL). During a Q&A session on his YouTube channel, de Villiers was asked about a player whom he thinks has been overpaid in the tournament and he mentioned the name of the England youngster. De Villiers explained that Curran is a 'wonderful player' but pointed out that he has not been exceptional for England or his IPL franchises.

"I don't like to be controversial. But, in my opinion, he's been overpaid for quite a few years now. He's not a bad player; I like him. He's had a fantastic World Cup, but that's quite a few years back. I don't think he's had a very good IPL recently. Also, for England, he hasn't played exceptionally well,” de Villiers said.

“He can turn things around like most world class players can. Nothing against Sam Curran. I still think he's a wonderful player. I just think he's been overpaid for a few years. Maybe it would have been a good move for them to let him go to open up some funds to buy different players,” he added.

"Nuwan Thushara and Dilshan Madushanka - two fantastic players. Also, Mohammad Nabi and Shreyas Gopal two very good buys for their price. They can offer you a lot. I think they did pretty well. All the young bowlers will feed off Jasprit Bumrah. I absolutely love the look of Coetzee, Madushanka and Thushara," he added.

"I faced this guy (Gerlad Coetzee) about 6-7 years ago. I think he was 18 or 19 years old and he impressed me a lot. He had a lot of steam, a lot of presence. He was in my face in that game. He is going to the mighty Mumbai Indians only for Rs 5 crore. That's a lot of money, but if you compare it to some other players, this was a steal."

Sam Curran becomes an all-rounder only in the IPL, scoring a much-needed fifty off 38 balls for Punjab Kings against Delhi Capitals in IPL 2024.

Sam Curran conceded 10 runs an over across his first two games of IPL 2024, but he is back to his best against Lucknow Super Giants today. He took 3 wickets off 28 runs in 4 overs.

2/25 in 4 overs, Sam Curran delivers in the pressure situation for PBKS against RR.

Virender Sehwag speaking about Sam Curran after the Punjab Kings vs Gujrat Titans game:

“I wouldn't keep Sam Curran as a batting all-rounder or a bowling all-rounder. Because such a player is of no use, who does some batting and some bowling. Either you win the game with your batting or win the game with your bowling. Either you hit the bullseye or you don't perform at all,"

Brilliant hat-trick by Sam Curran at The Hundred against London Spirit. He also scored 51* off 22 deliveries to win the game for his team and was named Man of the Match.

Sam Curran is proving himself a faheem ashraf of England lol

England all-rounder wants to turn strong IPL into international recall

The 2022 T20 World Cup Player of the Tournament is striving to earn an international recall for England and is aiming to showcase his capabilities with the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

England all-rounder Sam Curran is hoping to work his way back into the national setup via a strong showing during the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.

Curran hasn't played for England since he featured in white-ball series against the West Indies in November last year and was recently overlooked for the side's ICC Champions Trophy 2025 campaign that saw skipper Jos Buttler resign as captain following a winless three games in Pakistan.

While Curran is predominantly considered a T20I specialist and was adjudged Player of the Tournament during England's successful run in Australia in 2022 that saw them claim the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title, the 26-year-old has also played 24 Tests and 35 ODIs for his country since debuting back in 2018.

With Kiwi Brendon McCullum taking over as England coach in all formats from the start of this year and a new white-ball captain set to be announced shortly following the resignation of Buttler, Curran sees plenty of opportunity in front of him in the coming months as the side get set to host the West Indies, India and South Africa at home this summer.

But a two-month stint in the IPL with the Chennai Super Kings is first on the agenda for Curran, with the all-rounder to team up with another Kiwi coach in Stephen Fleming as the side attempts to improve on their fifth-placed finish in the most recent edition of the tournament last year.

And Curran believes some good performances in Chennai will catch the eye of McCullum and help him earn a recall to international cricket.

"My main aim is probably just to get back into the (England white-ball) side," Curran told the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.

"With England, I guess I've never really found that perfect role. In the Champions Trophy and the series in India (at the start of 2025), there was no hiding that they stacked the batting in terms of playing a lot of batters and those extra quicks.

"I feel like if I get my role right with England, I'll get back into it, who knows what will happen now. The cliché of (needing) runs and wickets is no debate, I've got to keep doing that.

"I feel in a really good space. I was obviously gutted when it happened, but I'm still pretty young and feel like I have matured when it comes to handling the bad stuff. Being a bit more experienced, reading situations better, I really hope I can get back into the team.

"There is only one way (to do that), hopefully I can have a really good IPL and see where we are in the summer."

Curran will also get the chance to further his leadership credentials this summer as he will captain County side Surrey during their T20 campaign in England's domestic Vitality Blast competition.

It could help push Curran's name to the front of the queue when England sit down to appoint a new T20I captain in the coming months, with McCullum recently suggesting he woud consider apponting seperate ODI and T20I skippers going forward.

"If it's the same person, great, if it's two, that's great too," McCullum said on Buttler's potential replacement as captain after England's disapponting Champions Trophy campaign.

"Give me a couple of weeks to work it out and get this thing back on track."

While Curran is yet to work alongside McCullum, he is looking forward to the chance to prove himself in the coming months should the opportunity arise.

"Baz (McCullum) called me at the start when I did get left out, was clear and honest, and I respected that," Curran noted.

"I've never worked under him, but he seems very honest and clear about (what he wants). He said I won't be there right now but that didn't mean the door was shut. It's about going away, doing really well and performing.

"He was very honest in terms of what the balance of the side was and how I could have been in had they done it differently. I respect that more than the classic 'you're just a little bit unlucky to miss out'.

"Sometimes as a player those ones that are a bit more brutal can be really good because you want to go and prove them wrong. Fingers crossed come June I'll be back in the squads and performing."

After a three-year gap, Sam Curran scored a first-class hundred, his second overall

He has smashed 263 runs @ 65.75 in the 2025 County Championship.
