Sarfaraz Khan Scores 605 Runs Without Being Dismissed in Ranji Trophy; Joins VVS Laxman, Vijay Merchant, Everton Weekes

22-year-old Sarfaraz Khan has had a dream run over the last fortnight where he has not put a foot wrong. The Uttar Pradesh-born cricketer now has amassed 605 runs in Ranji Trophy without being dismissed.

His dream run started when he smashed his maiden triple ton (301* off 391 balls) against Uttar Pradesh in the Quarter Finals to keep Mumbai’s hopes alive.

The pint-sized right-hander then smashed a quick-fire double ton in the very next match against Himachal Pradesh. He scored 226* in the 75 overs of the play that was possible on the first day of the match against Saurashtra at Rajkot.

On Tuesday, with 527 runs without being dismissed, he added 78 runs more to his unbeaten streak before getting out. That made it 605, which made him join a list of elite cricketers which features former India international VVS Laxman, Vijay Merchant and Vijay Dharmani.

He is in crazy good form. He must make the season count. India is going to have their hands full. So many under-19 batch players are in the Queue. Never seen such an array of talent waiting to join the ranks
 
I have been saying for few years now . Sarfraz is the next big finisher India has been looking for , street smart cricketer in Dhoni mould . We are wasting our time on Iyer and pandeys

Sarfraz is far more precious than Gill , shaw , Devdutt or Jaiswal’s . Top order batsmen are dime a dozen . I would get him in the indian team before any of the other hyped talents , but then With Virat it’s not going to happen

He has taken his domestic opportunity with both hands , good for him.

Doesn’t seem like a consistent middle order batsman though, will be happy to be proved wrong by him though.
 
Good to see him scoring runs in the domestic circuit. I believe the initial hype at RCB went straight to his dad’s head who then was his coach as well .. looks like he has hit a very timely reset button and is now a legit contender for the senior team - way to go Sarfraz

Has Sarfaraz proven himself to be a good middle order bat in 50-overs cricket? We know he can play the shots but there's a lot more to middle order batting in 50-overs than that.

Kohli loved the guy and tried hard to keep him close at RCB. But Sarfraz didn't do anything of note in the chances he got. A limited over debut is the best he could have hoped for and he did nothing to show he could. He seems a little mentally shot to me and I have my doubts about his international career.

In his interview Sarfaraz said that Kohli
told him you have the skill but you need the fitness, I don’t know maybe I have a bias or what, just love the guy’s confidence and skill set, and he went back and improved his fitness has shown that he has what it takes.. cricketers can only grow and we need middle order we have absolutely no one who even wants that slot, all these young guys eyeing top 3 positions.

At this point no one can deny Iyer deserves a run , but I am not entirely convinced with his game . Hes a confident batsmen and destructive against spinners, but I have a feeling bowlers will eventually work him out . Happy to be proven wrong .

I have seen the way he builds his innings, even as kid his general awareness of the game was what impressed me the most . These things are a lot rare than finding a batsmen with good technique / talent , not that Sarfaraz is not gifted . He could still fail at international level , but some one like him should be give more attention for the lack of good MO batsmen in the country .

yeah thats true though , has attitude issues . Virat has a big ego too , we dont know what happened but Sarfaraz was sidelined after that .

Because of our need middle order smart batsman ,we don’t have an issue with top 3.. there is always someone there.
Its about supply and demand for that position.
 
Mumbai's Sarfaraz Khan continued his scintillating form this season by scoring 169 at the Wankhede on the first day of their Ranji Trophy group stage match against Madhya Pradesh on Wednesday. Mumbai were 352/4 at stumps largely thanks to a 275-run stand between Sarfaraz and Aakarshit Gomel. Mumbai were down to 72 for 3 at one point but Sarfaraz and Gomel's stand took them out of the doldrums and ended up giving them the advantage at the end of the opening day. Gomel was dismissed on 122 while Sarfaraz remained unbeaten and looks on course to scoring his third double ton in five matches. His last few scores read 301*, 226*, 78 and 25.

Karnataka dismissed Baroda for just 85 runs with Abhimanyu Mithun and Krishnappa Gowtham taking three wickets each. They ended the day with a lead of 80 runs with three wickets in hand.

Punjab's Vinay Choudhary took six as they dismissed Bengal for 138 in Patiala. They ended Day 1 trailing by 45 runs. Jaydev Unadkat picked up three wickets as Saurashtra reduced Tamil Nadu to 250/7 despite Abhinav Mukund making 86.

Uttar Pradesh rode on Aquib Khan's five-wicket haul as they bowled out Himachal Pradesh for 220 in Lucknow. UP ended the day on 23/1. Maharashtra were all out for 207 and Uttarakhand in reply ended the first day on 112/3.

Haryana dismissed Jammu and Kashmir for 340. Hyderabad were 239/7 against Vidarbha while Services were 81/3 after dismissing Chandigarh for 179. Gujarat bowled out Andhra Pradesh for 177 and scored two runs at the end of the day. Odisha ended their opening day on 205/4 against Jharkhand.

Among the Plate Group matches, Meghalaya were 387/4 against Arunachal Pradesh while Chhattisgarh were 352/5 against Manipur. Goa declared on 490/4 with Smit Patel smashing 236 off just 195 balls. It was part of a whirlwind 301-run stand with captain Amit Verma who scored 148 off 123 balls. Bihar were 286/8 against Sikkim.

Sarfaraz Khan made a mirror-cracking comeback for Mumbai in Ranji Trophy 2019-20. A triple, a double and overall, 928 runs at an astounding average of 154.66. At present, the gun batsman is locked in his maternal home in Chhatarpur village, 17 kms from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, but there is no end to his hunger for perfection.

To avoid air travel, the family drove to U.P. on the brink of the lockdown as COVID-19 cases were on a rise in Mumbai. The 22-year-old, with the help of his father, Naushad, found alternative methods of training to keep the hunger alive.

“There are agricultural fields here. So I can run freely. Not too many people around. I do it in the evenings as we have the Ramadan in the morning. I do one day of long-distance running, followed by a short-distance one, then agility and weight training with the help of my father,” Sarfaraz told Sportstar on Thursday.

At their terrace, bedsheets are being used as nets while plastic balls are being thrown at Sarfaraz.

The rise of Yashasvi

Sarfaraz has been around for a while, but in the past two years, two biggies have emerged from Mumbai.

Prithvi Shaw led India to victory in the ICC U-19 World Cup in 2018 and made his international Test debut thereafter. Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed in the Vijay Hazare Trophy and ended up as the top run-scorer in the ICC U-19 World Cup 2020.

Shaw was pulled out of Mumbai's Ranji campaign midway due to a left rotator cuff injury. Later, he toured New Zealand with the Indian team. Yashasvi was set for his maiden IPL with Rajasthan Royals.

“If Prithvi would have been there, our team would have gained in Ranji. In Mumbai, we learn the hard way. Prithvi, Yashasvi and I have played a lot of cricket in Azad Maidan. It is a very difficult ground to learn cricket. The wickets aren’t that good and after doing the hard yard there, wickets in Wankhede and other grounds seem lot more easier,” said Sarfaraz, adding, “Yashasvi has lived in Azad Maidan. At times, I have slept the night on the pitch and then, caught the first train back home. The hard work of travel, hunger and passion to do well in Mumbai makes you a tough character.”

Life without IPL

The Indian Premier League helped Sarfaraz make great strides early in his career. He started with Royal Challengers Bangalore and then, moved to Kings XI Punjab. More than missing the cash-rich league, he is concerned about the health of people around the world.

“It felt weird not to have the IPL definitely. I am also feeling bad that the entire world is going through anxiety. It feels sad because there are so many sportsmen who are worried,” he said.

Having endured an eight-month knee injury layoff in the past, Sarfaraz is mentally strong during the no sports period. “It is similar to serving an injury layoff. If a player picks up a shoulder injury, he will have to sit out for five months. It depends how you take to it mentally,” he said.

guys stats just keep getting better, surely he cant be too far from an India call-up. apparently his hundred in the ranji final was the first time he hasn't converted a hundred to at least a 150.

is he really that good or is it simply a case of lots of games in Mumbai, where if i recall a lot of indian batsmen have crazy first class numbers.

He has done alright in South Africa tour with A team.
He needs to become a better circle fielder and improve his white ball consistency. While he will likely never look like an athlete, fielding is non negotiable

He is excellent . Has sehwags eye and now muzumdars discipline

Likely to be india no 5 in all formats .
 
He is too obese. He won't get picked in my opinion. Also he has played vs average opposition. What has he done in a tours? Has he been good? If so them maybe we shall see how good he is in internationals. He looks average to me. Shafique is a far better talent.

He has improved his match fitness and his physique . Talent wise he is at par with SKY in indian team . Definitely a v good middle order or opening batter .

He has not had too many tours due to COVID . But in a years time he will be there - scoring daddy hundreds against some very good teams consistently .

He has scored vs SA 'A' in South Africa. I think he is a better batter than Shreyas Iyer who has several technical flaws in his game vs pace, bounce, swing and seam. Most Indian players have flaws vs swing and seam but are good vs spin, pace and bounce. Iyer has that pace and bounce deficiency too.

"Very Deserving Of Coming Close": Sanjay Manjrekar On Ranji Trophy Star's Chances Of Test Call-Up
Sanjay Manjrekar has said that Sarfaraz Khan has come close to a national call-up on the back of his brilliant performances in Ranji Trophy

Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan set this year's edition of the Ranji Trophy alight just like he had last year as he registered yet another 900-run season. The 24-year-old scored a fine century in the Ranji Trophy final, and despite Madhya Pradesh looking set to win the title, he has made a strong case for a call-up to the Indian Test squad. Former India and Mumbai batter Sanjay Manjrekar said that while his aggressive and sometimes unorthodox style of batting can raise questions about whether he will make it at the Test level, he has come close to a national call-up on the back of his brilliant performances in India's First Class competiton.

"Because of the way he bats, you sort of wonder whether he's a Test potential kind of a player. But the amount of runs he's got in the last two seasons - and he doesn't get 103, 104, he gets big scores and it comes very quickly as well at a great strike rate," Manjrekar said in reply to an NDTV query about Sarfaraz Khan during a press conference organised by the Sony Sports Network.

"So even if you don't have a spot readily available - you want to try out the incumbents first, because Shreyas Iyer has grabbed the opportunity as a Test batter by getting runs - there is absolutely no harm in getting Sarfaraz Khan in closer to the Indian Test squad," Manjrekar said.

"Because when someone performs this heavily at the Ranji Trophy level, it's also to a message that we care about Ranji Trophy. We care about our First Class cricket. And when you recognise performances of your Ranji Trophy cricket and reward the players with recognition at the Test level, then you also elevate the importance of Ranji Trophy level," he explained.

"He is very deserving of coming close to a Test squad selection even if not in the playing XI," Manjrekar concluded.

Sarfaraz Khan has seven First Class centuries to his name so far, and averages over 80 after 25 matches.

Sarfaraz Khan: The 'wandering cricketer' on the road to stardom

Before India's squad for the 2014 Under-19 cricket World Cup left Bangalore, Naushad Khan had come down to the city to meet his son.

Sarfaraz Khan had found a spot as a batter in the 15-man squad alongside the likes of Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Deepak Hooda and Kuldeep Yadav. The side was coached by Bharat Arun, who would later become the architect of India's fast-bowling revolution.

When Arun was told that Naushad was there, he called him up to his room. "He told me not to worry and said everything would be fine," Naushad recalls. "I told him, 'sir, please look after Sarfaraz, he is a little naughty'."

Arun told him that Sarfaraz's humour was in fact an asset for the team.

"He isn't afraid to stare down Australian and Pakistani players and crack some jokes. That lightens the mood. This is his attitude. And the day he loses it, his performance will also suffer," Arun says.

Nothing much has changed since. Sarfaraz still cracks jokes. He plays for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy, India's leading domestic cricket tournament.

His Mumbai team coach, Amol Muzumdar, describes him as "the life of the team". He's still unafraid on a cricket field and he's still scoring runs in abundance.

In the last two Ranji Trophy seasons, Sarfaraz has scored 1,910 runs in just 12 games, averaging 136.42. He scored seven centuries in 18 innings, and also made 11 fifties. His achievements can't be overstated.

The all-time record for most runs in a Ranji Trophy season is held by VVS Laxman, who made 1,415 runs in the 1999-2000. It is still the gold standard of domestic cricket batting in India. Laxman got to play nine games that season. Sarfaraz has played only six games each in the last two seasons. By the end of his ninth game in this run, he had scored 1,479 runs.

That is the kind of impact he's had. Much of the credit goes to his hard work and dedication but also to Naushad, who coached both Sarfaraz and his younger brother Musheer, who at 17 is also making waves as a cricketer.

Sarfaraz often gets teary eyed when he talks about his childhood. He wonders what would have happened to him if his father wasn't there to support him.

Naushad would often put a price on his wicket during practice sessions. He would give the bowler 50 rupees (£5) every time Sarfaraz got out. He did it to ensure that all bowlers gave his son a tough time in net sessions.

He would end up spending 300-400 rupees on some days. That was a lot of money for the middle-class family and this made Sarfaraz work hard and not give away his wicket easily.

"I'm not saying this because he's my father, but it's difficult to find such a man in this world. His dedication is next level. He has problems in his knees, and eight years ago, the doctors told him to get operated. But he didn't because he thought that in case something goes wrong with the operation and he becomes wheelchair bound, how would he coach us?".

Sarfaraz was a prodigious cricketing talent in school in Mumbai alongside Prithvi Shaw and Armaan Jaffer. But Naushad briefly moved to his home state of Uttar Pradesh (UP) when he felt it was tough to get opportunities in Mumbai.

But the season with the UP team didn't go too well either, and the family moved back to Mumbai. He had to spend a mandatory "cooling off" period before he was eligible to play for the Mumbai team again.

Another endorsement for his talent came in the Indian Premier League (IPL) T20 tournament when he became one of the three players to be retained by the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2018. Former Indian captain Virat Kohli and South African star AB de Villiers were the other two.

A new auction meant that the teams could only retain a handful of players and the remaining had to go into the auction pool. An RCB analyst later said that they had identified Sarfaraz as one of the few players who could score at a blistering pace.

However, his form didn't hold up that season and he had to answer questions about his perceived lack of discipline.

But he continued to score heavily in the longer format of the game for Mumbai and that has made him a leading candidate for a spot in the national team.

A lot has been talked about Sarfaraz's weight but it doesn't bother him. "When I have the bat in my hands, I get into that zone," he says. "It doesn't matter who is watching then, selectors or crowd. If it's Allah's wish, I will get selected."

He backs himself because of his hard work and the training his father gave him. He had to become a "wandering nomad" every year to practice. His father would drive him to UP to avoid the rainy season in Mumbai as most practice venues shut during this period. During their 1,400km (870 miles) journey, they would make a stop in every city that had a practice venue.

And that's just one example of the hard work the father-son duo have put in to realise their dream of seeing Sarfaraz play for India. And given the buzz about him in the media, the day may not be too far.

Sarfaraz Not included in India squads for NZ and BD tours :

Sarfaraz Khan: With 1380 runs in 15 first class innings this year, six hundreds, an average of 106.15, it looked like Sarfaraz Khan had broken the Team India door. But the 25-year-old will have to wait further for that blue cap. When asked about what more the batter needs to do to be selected, Sharma said, “We are giving him the opportunities to him where we can. We opted for him in the India A squad. I’ve been speaking about him to the selectors as well. He will get an opportunity very soon.”
 
He should have been included in the test squad. I bet we are gonna continue with Puji, Rahul etc. These selectors are jokers.

Despite the surprises, fans were left aghast by the exclusion of Sarfaraz Khan, who didn't find a spot in the squad for the two Tests vs Australia in Nagpur (February 9-13) and Delhi (February 17-21). The 25-year-old has registered 431 runs in five games for Mumbai in the ongoing Ranji Trophy, packed with two tons and a half-century. Last season, the batter bagged 982 runs in six games, at an average of 122.75. He also hammered four centuries. Many fans felt that he deserved a spot, instead of Suryakumar or Kishan, considering his form.

While Kishan's selection as a backup keeper to KS Bharat is understandable considering the unfortunate road accident to Rishabh Pant, which has, in probability, sidelined him for about six months, the decision to prefer Suryakumar over Sarfaraz is bound to raise plenty of questions. Indian selectors are turning out to be as bad as Pakistan's.

There is absolutely no reason why Sarfraz Khan has to be excluded. He has smashed Ranji trophy and doesn't get rewarded for it. This is how you demoralize players. There's no point picking him 4 years later when he's not in his prime years. His time is now.
 
Pathetic of selectors to choose Ishan and Sky in the test team but not Sarfaraz. Why not disband India's FC cricket structure altogether if doesn't mean anything?
 
He is ready but selectors got seduced by Surya's T20 form. Khan is a 10 year/100-test batter. Home series vs a top team is the best time to get him in. Absolutely brainless decision.

And if team plays Ishan before Bharat I am going to lose my mind.
 
It's not like selections were any better earlier. Siraj was on fire in red ball cricket in 2018 and they didn't select him.

Indian selections are absolutely pathetic. But then again, lengthening the career of someone like Kohli seems to be the prerogative rather than actually giving domestic performers a chance.

It's a joke that someone like Mayank gets discarded wherssd Kohli continues to play despite failing for 3 years. Absolute farce.
 
Just to lengthen careers of washed up oldies like Kohli, Rohit and Pujara, selectors have done a great disservice to Indian cricket and the honest players like Sarfaraz Khan who have toiled in domestic circuit for years without any reward.

TOI understands that the selectors are looking at attacking options in the middle order for Test matches in the absence of Rishabh Pant. It is learnt that the selectors and team management are eager to play Ishan in the middle order against Australia as that could be a like-for-like for replacement.

"Playing a wicketkeeper in place of Pant is not the major problem. The team needs someone who can take the game away at no.5 like Pant did. That's why Ishan has been picked. Suryakumar is also seen as such an option. India are expected to play on turners. So, the team will be looking at someone who can score quickly. a BCCI source told TOI.

Sarfaraz deserved a reward. He has scored bucketload of runs in domestic.
 
I know he has been hailed as a future Indian star many many years ago already but didn’t he have issues of fitness and also attitude ?

Just asking, not sure, came across this on some Indian sources way before.

Fitness issue applies with Sarfaraz too. But we have seen fat players succeed too in Test cricket. When someone has scored so many runs at domestic level, I think it was about time you give him the run. He has the talent and is scoring daddy hundreds.

He is not a random first class stat padder. Identified as a pridigy at school level. Then represented under-19 world cup and played some crucial knocks in it.

secondly india maye be influenced a little bit with the bazball approach and may want to try a player in test matches who can take the game away from the opposition in no time. Rishab pant has played some great knocks in test cricket and in his absence they probably want someone to play like him.

That's ok but why Surya then? India aren't attempting bazball. Even if they are Khan is a pretty positive batsman with multiple gears. He even bowls decent spin.

May be because surya has shown it at international stage that he can do it. Sarfraz wont be long away from selection , some A matches against australia A may see him in the indian team.
 
Sarfaraz is as good as Pant, I have always seen them as equal talents.

Atrocious selection by our selection committee yet again.

Even if the team management wants an attacking player, this still doesn't make sense as Sarfaraz himself is a pretty attacking option.
 
Sarfraz is like the old school player from the 90s. Bit like ARavinda De Silva. Very wristy. Lot of subcontinent flair.
 
He will have to wait a bit. He will take the place of our current no 3 likely one he fails - he is already aging .
 
Why are people finding his exclusion surprising? Isn't this the same selection committee that is keeping Samson out of the team and picked Surya for the test team? :inti
 
The bigger problem is, why do they keep selecting K L Rahul ? He averages 34 in test cricket after all these years. And worse, he is now guaranteed in the XI being VC.
 
I remember Sarfaraz from the U19 WC from a while back. Hope he makes it into internationals soon. If not this time, then next.

I'm starting to think maybe he has some connections with the BCCI. Him being selected time and again is an insult to us fans from the selectors.

Feels like BCCI saw Rahul as a successor to Kohli and at one point. And they still haven't come to grips with the fact that he might not be that.

Sarfaraz played U19 in 2014 and 2016 both.

2014 batch with Kuldeep Yadav, S Iyer, Samson and Hooda

2016 batch with Pant, Kishan and Avesh.

It is probably because his ceiling as a batsman is high technique wise. In 2021 England tours, multiple injuries gave KL a chance to make a comeback in Test cricket and he responded well with a high quality 80 odd in bowling friendly conditions in 1st test. He displayed great exhibition of playing swing bowling in that game.

Next test was in Lords where the conditions were comparatively better for batting and he got a hundred there. Rohit also got 80 odd and India got a pretty strong start. That basically strengthened his place in Indian team at top order. Then in South Africa, again KL Rahul scored a hundred in the first test. In that series if you remember, only KL and Pant got a hundred from Indian side in the whole series.

That's two series where KL performed well and those were tough conditions. Mayank failed in that series. Now because he got runs in England and South Africa, he is getting another long run. He failed in BD and he missed the home series vs SL where he could have cashed in some runs. But because even in home conditions, he had produced a series like in Australia few years back, so he is persisted.

KL Rahul has a ceiling of being able to perform in testing conditions. This is not really something that everyone else can do.
