[VIDEOS] "Shoaib Akhtar's not just criticised me but made a personal attack on me" : Sarfaraz Ahmed

Sarfaraz Ahmed in answer to a question about Shoaib Akhtar on arrival in Pakistan "He's not criticizing me but making a personal attack on me, there is nothing else to it"

======

Pakistan team’s suspended captain, Sarfraz Ahmed on his return to Karachi said that it was his mistake and he got the punishment for it by the International Cricket Council (ICC).

Sarfraz while talking to the media at the Karachi Airport said that he said those words in the heat of the moment, but anyway he said sorry for the offence.

“I accepted my punishment and this matter must not get any more hype,” said Sarfraz who is positive to make a strong comeback as team’s captain.

Sarfraz lashed out at Pakistan’s former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar for criticising him for passing racist comments during the match. “He is doing personal attacks on me,” he said.

It is pertinent to mention here that Akhtar in his video message criticized Sarfraz for passing racial comments against Andile Phehlukwayo during the second ODI against South Africa and demanded him to apologize publicly.

Sarfraz, on the other hand, praised the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) for cooperating with him in this matter. “PCB handled this issue very well,” he stated.

The ICC banned Sarfraz for four international matches following his racial comments. The PCB then decided to call skipper back home to give him some rest. In his absence, Shoaib Malik will lead the side during the final ODI and T20I series.

Sarfraz does not need to respond to a washed up has-been like Akhtar. The latter's analysis and criticism are a joke, tbh. He switches his support or POV every other day.

Akhtar has made such remarks about almost every Pakistani captain. He's had issues with Afridi, Yousuf and Younis, to count a few. Best to leave him be.

This guy has too much attitude for an average cricketer. Pathetic!

I believe pak players are needed to educate about how to talk to press.

PCB handled it well.... Yup, the way they did handle is, they didn't handle at all.

Akhtar can make whatever comment he wants. If it is defaming, sue him. But he just continued the line of attack and opened more ugliness. An aspect that he could have easily avoided.

what personal problems can he have with Sarfraz? He never played with Sarfraz. Sarfraz has no respect to former legends.

All Akhtar said that Sarfraz made a mistake referring to someone like that is racist and is not taken lightly in that country. I don't see any personal attack but facts in that video.

Hope you don't ever play a game for Pakistan again. Wimp.

This guy can't respect former legends of Pakistan. I doubt he will respect any current Pak player which shows in his grumpy attitude on the field. This guy is made Pakistan's national captain is ridiculous.

Just stop playing the vicitcm! You made a mistake and people are going to call you out for it.

Sarfraz made his debut in 2007 and Akhtar was in the squad with him.

I doubt a legendary player like S Akhter will have any ego problems with a young player making his career. May be Kamran Akmal can make that claim but not Sarfraz.

Can somebody tweet this and ask for Shoaib Akhter's response?? I know he wants a PCB post so he might not give us a true answer or may not answer at all but let's give it a try.

Sounds like a bully doesn't like to be called out!!! BOO HOO - pathetic!

This is supposed to be the captain of an international team - what a national embarrassment !!

surely some sane guys in the PCB must be seeing his ill attitude?
What example does it set for youngsters in the team?

what personal problems can he have with Sarfraz? He never played with Sarfraz. Sarfraz has no respect to former legends.

What personal problem did he have with Afridi? Or with Yousuf? Or with Younis or in fact with Inzi?

Give it a rest! These are legends only on the field. Off the field, they are nothing but bitter, irrelevant and hate-spewing loud mouths!

Pakistani Cricketers in general cannot deal with criticism constructively.

We all know akhtar has been a loudmouth but whatever he said to sarfaraz wasnt personal..Its just that sarfaraz has taken the criticism personally..

Sorry to say, but what Shoaib Akhtar says on those cringe-worthy TV shows is not criticism. He has made way below the belt comments regarding almost all team members and the coaching staff.

I agree with the last part. Sarfraz should not have responded, especially to someone like Akhtar.

Poor Mr. Mauka Chauka feels besieged and thinks any criticism is a "personal attack".

Shoaib runs his mouth a lot and says a lot of silly things, but on this issue, he was actually quite logical and sensible.

Obviously when a captain gets banned from the team, on the back of a string of poor personal performances, and knows that captaincy game in Pakistan is like a non-deadly Game of Thrones, he's going to feel like he's under "attack". In spite of that, it would have been best if he had kept his mouth shut. Ironically, in Sarfraz's case that advice would apply to a whole bunch of occasions. Like when he chose to be casually racist out of frustration near a stump-mike. Or the hundreds of times he moans and takes out his "frustrations" on his fellow players - always the young guys, never anybody "senior" mind you.

Frustrations seem to be a running theme with him. If I were a Pakistani cricket fan, I too would be frustrated with having such a rank mediocre player not only playing in the team but being Captain. And that too in all 3 formats!

What did Shoaib say?

I myself heard Akhtar supporting Sarfaraz on a show claiming that he is our 'lucky' captain and there is not way we should go to the worldcup without him leading the team.
Cool, now Saifi will hear some real personal attacks.

Sarfraz is proving himself to be just another Umar Akmal/Ahmed Shehzad. It's fitting they will play for the same team in PSL.

Oh here we go, our double Pakistani standard,

Its ok for him to make a personal attack on another human being

(especially that he said those words in the heat of the moment, but anyway he said sorry for the offence.)

but its wrong for you to make personal attack on him

He himself said something that's vomit indulging. And now he has a problem when someone criticizes him? Did he expect to be showered with rose petals for what he said?

Keep him out.

No getting back in the team, this is national embarrassment for us and is painting Karachi street cricket in a very very negative way.

I'm 100% sure we have way more educated, classy people playing street cricket. With much better manners.

For those asking about what Shoaib said, he didn't say anything personal, he condemned Sarfraz's comments as he should. Credit to him for speaking out. Racism cannot be tolerated and doesn't belong to the 21st century.

Now as for the video in the OP, does this look like a captain who handle even the slightest of pressure?

No need from a comment from Sarfaraz.

You are already in trouble, just keep quiet.

Cannot disagree with you here. Only I find the likes of Saeed Anwar , Saqlain and Mushtiq Ahmed res p ectable from recent cricketers

Hope he gets grilled from all corners, just to see how he handles it which will in turn show if he is mentally ready to comeback never mind be the captain as I believe he should not be the captain anymore

Sarfaraz has already achieved more in his career than Shoaib Akhtar did. He doesn’t need to pay heed to a washed up cricketer who let Pakistan down so many times

Haha, you have chosen a perfect name for yourself. Shoaibby said absolutely nothing wrong on this particular issue.

Haha, you have chosen a perfect name for yourself. Shoaibby said absolutely nothing wrong on this particular issue.

His timing was wrong throwing a nation cricketer under the bus after that cricketer was already under trouble having made a grave mistake. Shoaib of all cricketers should know what it is to make a mistake.

What kind of ignorant villager is Sarfraz, he takes all this criticism with regards to his racism as a personal attack lol this is the captain of the pakistan team  he is a big liability as it is, this should have been the final nail in the coffin of his sacking. He has no shame at all, probably just said sorry etc for show as well, when he's bothered about Akhtar's comments then I don't believe he truly understands the extent of his pathetic behaviour and bigotry

It's actually quite remarkable. For someone who just has been punished for speaking nonsense is still not thinking too much before speaking.

But how did he "throw him under the bus"? All he said is that it was wrong and he should apologize - which btw, Sarfraz did NOT do right away, and his 1st apology was along the lines of "sorry it was heard on the stump-mic".

What an embarrassment this guy has become. I've never seen someone play the victim card in this situation before. He should be booted out the side ASAP.

I standby Shoaib's comments on SA. He did not insult or belittle SA as can be seen in the vid. He simply pointed out what most of the PK cric fans have been saying. Sarfraz is simply overreacting.

Now that he is out of the PK team, lets give him a longer break so he can get his priorities correct and which should help improve his performance

Sarfaraz seems stressed, quite rightly worried about his captaincy and his future.

He'll have to face the music soon.

Hmm.

That is the most cringeworthy post I've seen from a cricketer.

Imagine if Smith and Warner were doing antics like these, instead of being really sorry and acknowledging their mistake.

Sarfraz really doesn't deserve to play for the country, non-performance is another but also a valid issue.

But the bitter reality is, PCB, Ehsan Mani, et. al. also have the same mindset as that of Sarf and are fuming at ICC for taking action.

Find nothing wrong with what he did, just playing victim.

PakPremi so what do you think? Still want to defend Sarf?

I blame the media here. What was the need to ask him such an unnecessary question at the airport at a time like this? The media just loves controversy and to create fight amongst players. Disgraceful stuff.

So media is responsible for this? :wahab2

Sarfraz himself isn't ashamed one bit over what he did, and the sorry was just for the gallery/escape any punishment!

If he really had any remorse (like Smith/Warner), he wouldn't have been acting like this.

As if he's entitled.

Doesn't work like that. It's not even close to what media did to our most successful, graceful captain Misbah ul Haq.

:salute

Although Shoaib was no angel himself I don't see him having made any personal attack on Sarfaraz. The episode should be put to an end now. I sense it could signal the end of Sarfaraz's career as an international player. He's not been playing well for a long time now.

Hmm.

Someone please help Sarfaraz here, he is the captain of an international team in three formats. This is literally one of the weirdest posts I've ever seen and I've seen some really strange stuff on twitter from cricketers involving grapes and what not.

That hurt.

Oh boi a snowflake spotted.

On topic Sarfraz should not take criticism at heart rather take this time to improve his game and shortcomings. Take it as a time for self inspection after 2 years of non-stop cricket.

People say even worse things. He should learn this from Misbah who had many faults but handled criticism really well.

Should have ignored the question.

Being sent back from a tour is humiliating, and moreso for the captain of an international sports team.

Is this Sarf's kid? Can somebody translate the gist of it?

its essentially a poem with the underlying message that people will always hate on you and be jealous of you and make a big deal out of your shortcomings etc etc

Sarfraz making himself out to be the victim.

To me Sarfraz comes across as a short tempered guy who can easily be riled up and provoked. I don't think Akhtar to get a rise out of him.

He is a very likeable guy and loved by many 'Pakistanis' so no surprises.

I dont think any other cricketer got a similar reception which Sarfraz got after CT win.

But on PP we heard the Pak won CT despite Sarf not because of him.

Funny the most criticism that Sarf gets is from people who were Misbah or Azhar supporters under whose tutelage Pak achieved their worst ever ranking on number 9th. While with Sarf we are on the verge of number 4th. :fz

I agree his own performance has been crap (only with the bat, keeping has been top notch), but to completely crucify the guy as if he is the spawn of the devil is typical Pakistani fan mentality.

No matter how bad Sarf gets he can never be as bad as Misbah or Azhar.

Well more drama. He has been punished and the case is closed. Lets move on. He will be back as Pakistan captain in the next series.

Oh I see. Thanks.

It seems no day goes by without Sarfaraz showing off why he is just not captaincy material. National embarrassment.

Safraz is a racist and should be stripped the captaincy tbh. I wished ICC gave him atleast a ten match ban for his disgusting remark. And those who are calling Shoaib a washed up cricketer have their heads in sand. Shoaib is highly regarded as a player by the world and his record speaks for itself. He may not met his potential but he was one of the best bowlers of his time and the fastest ever. Furthermore, shoaib may have a loud mouth but he is bang on here. We need to get rid of this low mentality Sarfraz.

Surprised why there is no gag order on him - if he is the captain of Pakistan, he needs to be told to behave in the appropriate manner and let the current crisis pass.

KARACHI: Pakistan cricket captain Sarfraz Ahmed vowed Tuesday to be a better player as he returned home after being handed a four-match ban for a racial slur against a South African player in Durban last week.

The 31-year-old was heard on a stump microphone making a comment in Urdu about Andile Phehlukwayo during the second One-day International.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Sunday banned Sarfraz for four matches — two ODIs and two Twenty20 Internationals — of the South African tour.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) expressed disappointment over the punishment — saying it believed a ban was unnecessary because the matter had already been resolved between the two players — and withdrew the Pakistan captain from the tour.

Sarfraz was greeted as he landed back at Karachi airport by some 200 fans, who held placards condemning the ICC’s decision — said the matter is behind him.

“Whatever happened has happened,” Sarfraz told media at the airport after landing from Cape Town. “I accepted my mistake. I would like to thank the PCB, for handling the situation well, and the decision made by the ICC is in front of you.

“I will improve myself and my performance in the future and I thank my supporters for their backing.”

The ICC said Sarfraz will have to attend “an education programme to promote the understanding and awareness of issues directly relevant to the offence that he has committed.”

In Sarfraz’s absence, Shoaib Malik led the team to an eight wicket win in the fourth match in Johannesburg on Sunday.

Pakistan and South Africa meet in the final match in Cape Town on Wednesday, with the series tied at 2-2. That will be followed by a three-match Twenty20 international series.

Asked about PCB’s decision to recall him, Sarfraz said: “I don’t see anything in it as I was playing cricket for the last five months. I will rest and then play Pakistan Super League,”, referring to the league starting in the United Arab Emirates from February 14.

But Sarfraz blasted former fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar, who condemned his action as unacceptable for someone leading Pakistan, saying Shoaib was launching “personal attacks”.

Shoaib lambasted on the Pakistani captain and demanded a public apology. “The incident is completely unacceptable for a Pakistani. I think he did this in the heat of the moment and he should publicly apologise,” the former pacer said in his video tweet.

On Monday, Sarfraz received the backing from former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram who slammed PCB’s decision to call back the skipper and backed the 31-year-old to lead the side in the World Cup this year.

“It was a wrong decision to call him back from South Africa when he could have played in the final T20 on February 6,” the fast bowling great told reporters. “What Sarfaraz did was wrong but it is also a fact that more than anyone else, Pakistanis around the world hyped up his comments and created an issue.

“There is no need to change the captain before the World Cup. We need a long term captain not a short term one. Malik is leading the team now and is doing a fine job but even he has said he will retire from ODIs after the World Cup.

“Sarfraz is still learning and will get better as he matures and gains more experience. It would be wrong to remove him as captain.”

Sarfraz made his debut in 2007 and Akhtar was in the squad with him.

Shoib Akhtar does not deserve respect specially the way he speaks about Pakistani captains ,moraly he should not speak considering what he was during his cricketing days he was such a indiscipline character

LMAO. Sarfraz needs to calm down if he wants to savor any of the respect he has left

Have not once defended Sarfraz after the incident and have been saying it's blessing in disguise as he is hyper emotional and clearly stressed as well now.
However I will not insult players who have fought hard for Pak team and have given us many good memories with their perfomances. His batting performances have suffered big time sue to PCB's ill thought step of making him captain of all three format. At the same time it hurts me to read personal insults on him from posters who claim to be morally superior.

I'm glad you think like that and are not blindly defending like some others.

It's not related to morally superior. I will feel very bad if I call someone as oye kaalay. And it is definitely racist at international stage even if at his home he doesn't consider it as racist.

You have to understand that.

I dont really care about what he thinks about a supposed "legend" , we all know that he is not the best when handling the media but lets give the guy some break. He is not as bad as we are making him out , i see the the usual kamran akmal group here making a villain out of him. He plays for pakistan with a lot of passion , i have criticized his captaincy and his batting and i believe he should be out of the team for his lack of performance. He has been banned for a comment he made and this should be enough punishment and humiliation for him already , dont push someone who is already down.

When all said and done, What he said was definitely racist! and therefore must serve his four match ban. Now he needs to keep his head down and really use this enforced rest to improve his batting form.

Sad.

Agree with you I just object to some posters insulting Sarfraz just because they did not like him due to recent performances rather than how they are genuinely upset about what Sarfraz said. Anyway Pak do need to move on from him as captain but I will continue supporting him as a player if his batting form returns especially in tests but he should give up limited over internationals.

Hmm.

And this completely convinces me that he is a bonda fide idiot. The guy dug his own grave with the reprehensible thing he said on camera. And now he is playing the bloody victim card.

Great going.

To think this guy was made captain. Doesn't matter if he's a tactical genius, a captain is an ambassador for the country, and Sarfraz is dragging the reputation through the dirt. Not only that, he doesn't seem to accept it and is now hitting out at anyone who is criticising his obnoxious behaviour. Thank God he's been banned and we won't have to watch his ridiculous antics wearing the Pakistan shirt for a while.
