I’ve watched this boy from his first game, his rise, his fall, his comebacks, his exclusions.
I think the biggest reason why he has always failed to maintain a spot in the side is because Pakistan has an unhealthy obsession with demanding its batsmen to compete with India’s batting stars. Umar and Kohli both came on to the scene around the same time. Umar just couldn’t produce the way Kohli was producing hundreds left right and centre. That’s when you had all the fans and media constantly on his case. This can most certainly be psychologically overwhelming. The burden of expectation was too much, Kohli’s success pretty much destroyed Umar Akmal’s focus.
There was nothing wrong with his 30 ball 40 run cameos, or his T20 cameos that would come off. Umar always wanted to try and do his best, it was cowards like Misbah who would hide and not take the game on until they have faced at least 60 balls for 30 runs.
