Pakistan opening batsman Mohammad Rizwan fell into a trap off the first ball of the match and the tourists never recovered as South Africa romped to a six-wicket win with six overs to spare in the second Twenty20 international at the Wanderers on Monday. Man of the match George Linde revealed at the post-match presentation that South Africa deliberately placed mid-off Aiden Markram inside the 30-metre circle in order to tempt Rizwan to go over the top.

Rizwan danced down the wicket and went for a big hit but only succeeded in hitting a high catch to Markram. "We had a game plan to bring that guy up and I was happy when he (Rizwan) came down the wicket," said left-arm spinner Linde who went on to take three for 23. He also held three catches in the deep and Pakistan were restricted to 140 for nine on what South African captain Heinrich Klaasen said was "a 180-190 wicket".

South Africa showed up Pakistan's batting shortcomings by racing to a series-levelling victory. Opening batsman Markram set the tone by slamming 54 off 30 balls. There was a brief wobble when leg-spinner Usman Qadir took two wickets in successive overs to reduce South Africa to 92 for four but Klaasen (36 not out) and Linde took the hosts to the target with no further alarms.

Linde finished off a good day by scoring 20 not out off ten balls. Pakistan captain Babar Azam made 50 and shared Pakistan's only productive partnership, 58 off 49 balls for the third wicket, with Mohammad Hafeez (32). "Aggression cost us the game," said Babar after five of his batsmen fell to catches when they mistimed big hits.

"Early wickets cost us and the South Africans bowled really well," he said. Klaasen said the execution of South Africa's bowlers was "spot on". He singled out fast bowler Sisanda Magala, who had a nightmare first over, starting with three no-balls and then bowling three wides in conceding 18 runs.

"He begged me for another over," said Klaasen. "He said, 'I'm your guy today' and he proved it." Magala's next three overs, including two at the 'death', cost only 14 runs and he took the key wicket of Babar, his first in international cricket. Klaasen said the message to the South African batsmen was to be positive and to base their approach on the quality of the pitch rather than the runs required.

"We want to play aggressive cricket but not cowboy cricket," he said, pointing out that he tempered his aggression after Qadir's double strike. The series moves to nearby Centurion for the final two matches, on Wednesday and Friday.

Maybe a lesson for Babar Azam and Co in the thread title.

I like that phrase "cowboy cricket" :))

We've a few cowlashers for sure.

In the 2 T20s South Africa's intent has been really good. They have looked to attack. Today they continued to attack even when they were slightly in trouble.

The return of the IPL players and the likes of Markham,Lizard, and Klassen performing certainly gives them some selection headaches for the World T20.

Klaasen is a good T20 player but not sure about other formats yet. His first impression was that India series in 2018 but whether he can maintain the consistency, we don't know.

He needs back his words action in third match as well.Do not think it is easy against a all-round Pak bowling though.

Might work for SA, Pak fans though are obsessed with cowboy cricketers

Proteas stand-in captain Heinrich Klaasen said they had no answer to Babar Azam's classy and calculated aggression in the third T20 at SuperSport Park. Azam scored a maiden T20 ton (122) that underpinned his team's massive nine-wicket win against South Africa. Azam shared a 197-run opening stand with Mohammad Rizwan as Pakistan took an unassailable 2-1 lead ahead of Friday's final T20.

Proteas stand-in captain Heinrich Klaasen said they simply had no response to Babar Azam’s batting brilliance in the third T20 at SuperSport Park on Wednesday. Azam, Pakistan’s fluent captain, stroked an enchanting 122 off 59 balls as Pakistan coasted to a nine-wicket win with 12 balls to spare.

The win gave them an unassailable 2-1 lead in the four-match T20 series that ends on Friday at the same ground. Azam, who scored a 104-ball 103 and an 82-ball 94 in the first and the third ODIs that took place at SuperSport Park, showed his class.

Having scored a run-a-ball 50 in the second T20 at Wanderers on an admittedly difficult surface, he took one ball less to make his maiden T20 100 with 11 fours and four sixes. Klaasen said they were helpless in the face of a classy assault from the world’s best ODI batsman.

“We were about 10 runs short, but they batted brilliantly. We didn’t have enough answers for the way they batted. Babar is a special batter. When a guy like him comes off, it’s very difficult to defend on this ground,” Klaasen said.

“It was something to view from behind the stumps. We tried everything. They made a lot of good balls look bad with good execution, excellent placement and brilliant stroke play."

Klaasen also pointed to the flat nature of the wicket, saying that it gave his bowlers little to work with. Two excellent 50s from Janneman Malan and Aiden Markram gave South Africa hope, but a national T20 record opening stand of 197 between Azam and perennial nemesis Mohammad Rizwan (73*) turned what should have been a tall chase into a cakewalk.

“How does one take wickets on this type of surface where there was no turn, and the wicket was skidding down the slope? The ball was gripping and the ball travels on the highveld. I reckon the way to get wickets here is to be defensive and make sure a team doesn’t bat easily at 10 an over,” Klaasen said.

“Two nights ago, the guys struck early, but it was different in this game. It was a better surface to bat on and the bowlers need to work harder. It’s a tough place to bowl here.”

Klaasen though admitted they had a more than defendable score and they’ll have to come up with better plans to stem Pakistan in the fourth T20 on Friday. While Pakistan have bossed all the SuperSport Park games, Klaasen said they really want to draw the series.

“We had a good score and we failed to defend it. We’ll have to do a lot of homework and we have to make some new plans,” Klaasen said. “We’ll have to look at things very quickly because we don’t have much time. If there’s one thing, the guys are up for it and we really want to make sure we draw the series.”

This is the true definition of aggressive

Not sure what to call Pakistan’s 60 runs in the powerplay and scoring 70 runs in the next 10 approach?

Cowboy cricket?
Na, Cowboy cricket suggests a non-methodical approach to aggressive hitting. Basically what tailenders do.

We have a methodical approach to timid cricket. No intent to hit sixes when 2 fielders are outside the circle. A intent to hit 1 six in the over every now and then against part timers and the spinners.

I am really worried about his future and well being. International sport is truly brutal and cruel especially so in the age of social media when every second of your actions are covered live and recorded for posterity.

I hope he and his young family do not have to feel the after effects of this cruel loss.

Not fair at all

He doesn't live in India or Pakistan. He will be fine.

He may get trolled by Indian fans on twitter but nothing will happen in South Africa. He will get as much support as needed.

Why specifically Klassen and not the other ten players ?

What a strange thread to open lol.

What a strange thread to open lol.

Because if you truly understand cricket he was literally one or two balls away from glory max one or even two more overs !!!

He can’t believe the ball was reversing this much on this venue

I wouldn’t be surprised. Naseem Shah 100% was told twice by the umpires not to throw the ball on the pitch. Rizwan told him to throw it on the other pitches but not the playing one.

Is thier a rule regarding this ?

Klassen the perennial choker , the hier to legacy left by :kallis :amla has nerve to rattle any other cricket.

His Barbados debacle will shadow him to heavens with Cronje

The truth is, after the 2006 oval gate, umpires are too scared to call out anything they find suspicious unless it’s absolute concrete evidence like Shahid Afridi biting the ball or the sandpaper scandal.

Klassen as a captain looks very meek. May be not the right guy. They need someone enterprising and aggressive. Only way SA will win a tournament is with an captain with an aggressive mindset. Entire team starts misfielding moment they are in a situation where things don't go their way.

Clutching at straws lol. Making up any lie to make rizwan look bad 🤦‍♂️

Another WK batsman who is on par with Dhoni if not better but doesn’t have 1% the PR.

What lie am I making up? Go and view that passage again. Naseem was warned by umpires twice, Rizwan told him to use the other pitch but not the main pitch to throw the ball into!

oh wow didn’t know you understood Pashto

Read point 2.

“One of the most common methods to erode the shine off the ball is to keep banging the assigned side on the ground. This corrodes the surface and owing to the parched nature of the pitch takes away the shine fairly quickly.

Sweat and spit are then applied to the other side to make it heavier and then bowlers release it and get it to swirl around.

However, the umpires have started keeping an eye on the fielding side to reduce this practice but the fielding sides keep finding grey areas and keep bouncing the ball whenever they get it back to the wicket-keeper or the bowler.”

That’s exactly what the umpires were doing when Naseem was caught twice throwing the ball right on to the pitch on the bounce to Rizwan.

I remember you mentioning it in the match thread itself before this blew up with Klassen talking about it.

But is it illegal to throw it on the other pitches ?

I’ve been trying to find something credible

The MCC laws state that deliberate attempts to change the condition of the ball is illegal, and it’s the umpires duty to stay vigilant when the bowling team is handling the ball. It’s a bit vague, but the umpires have to stay on top when players are trying to be cheeky with the way they throw the ball and where they throw the ball.

Klaasen was rightly onto something. He isn’t stupid when he claims “I have played cricket for 13 years and I’ve never seen the ball reverse this much being 20 overs old”.

Yeah I thought as much. ICC can't afford this to be a grey area/spirit of cricket thing.

Either explicitly allow it or ban it completely.

Another day another 50 for Heinrich Klaasen against Pakistan, came in 45 balls in the 2nd ODI. Pakistan need his wicket badly now.

Makes it feel even sweeter, we won the series choker Klassen throwing his toys and rookie local umpire humble thrice :rizthumbsup

But some fellas want to malign it with there agenda

Yes…what does that have to do with the first ODI after which he made his allegation?
Becouse its proberly interlink and I have never seen a bowl chance in a game as many times as that game.

Klassen is in the real hot form these days.. in the 3rd ODI ha against smashed a quick half century to keep South Africa in the game.

At least we haven’t been knocked out in 4 days during our home tournament :rizthumbsup
Had the scheduling been different you would have been. End your 7 match losing streak before thumping your chest like you've won the tournament.

Klassen is explaining about how he became a beastly hitter against spin. Very interesting listen. SOmebody has challenged him to take on leg spin. Also these whiny English commies tried to get him to join them in whining. He didn't fall for it.

This was indeed really interesting. I'd like to hear him speak more as well.

Maybe AB can take him once on his channel and talk about this stuff in detail.
