Gus Atkinson's 2022 season may have been brief, with only four County Championship and six Vitality Blast appearances for Surrey, but it was enough to showcase his potential. The Desert Vipers took notice and signed him for the inaugural ILT20 in 2023, likely due to his impressive pace and smooth run-up. Atkinson's journey began in 2017 when he earned a professional contract with Surrey after impressing in the second team. He gradually made his way up the ranks, debuting in List A cricket in 2021 and eventually becoming a regular in the first team. Although his 2022 season was limited, he still managed to take 13 wickets at an average of 28.84. His hard work paid off when he made his Test debut for England in July 2024 against the West Indies.

Strauss lauds 'intimidating' Atkinson

Sir Andrew Strauss on Gus Atkinson:

“This has been sensational from Atkinson. It has been fast, accurate and intimidating at times as well. He has been very, very impressive.

"He has varied his length and on a slow pitch he has looked threatening in a way the other seamers have not. It has been phenomenal to watch."

Some start to a Test career for Atkinson

Ex-England captain Andrew Strauss on Sky Sports:

"Atkinson has bowled good line, good length and good pace.

"The wobble seam has been hard for the West Indies to deal with, especially with the overcast conditions."

Ian Bishop on Gus Atkinson on Sky Sports Cricket:

"I really like the control that Atkinson shows, he's got subtle variations of the seam, he was patient and did the simple things well.

"He's obviously got he pace and the understanding of when to bowls the seam up and when to scrambles the seam, those things I don't take for granted."

A great start. Best of luck to him. He can be an ashes winning bowler for England.

The first England bowler to claim 10 wickets on debut in a home Test since 1946!

England bowler Gus Atkinson, who finished with match figures of 12-106:

"It's been an incredible week. I just want to say thanks to Jimmy, playing here in his last Test has been incredible and to do so well has been incredible.

"Growing up, Jimmy was someone I'd come here to Lord's and watch, and standing at mid-off I was looking at Jimmy running in thinking I'd seen that so many times on the TV, so it was amazing.

"What's so good with this group is you're allowed to come in and be the player you want to be, and it's helped me massively. To come out and do so well this week is fantastic."

Impressive debut but i don't think he'll be successful in test cricket. Same case with Shamar Joseph.

England captain Ben Stokes says there is more to Gus Atkinson than just pace after his player-of-the-match display on debut in the first Test against West Indies at Lord's, he said:

"He isn't just about out-and-out pace, he has the skill as well. His ceiling is so high,"

"We have seen a lot of potential in him going back to the 50-over World Cup. It is very exciting."

"The thing I love about Gus is that he went to India in the winter, didn't play a game, worked so hard on his game and to see the fruits of that, I am sure will help him."

"He will be an amazing cricketer for England. He has all of the attributes you need."

I like his height and frame, as well as his pace. A very promising start.

What a start! But issue now is the weight of expectations on him, every time he bowls.

He has big shoes to fill in. People will now be thinking of him about being a replacement for Anderson. This is going to be a tough task.

Exactly the bowler Stokes desired, can execute an bouncer barrage tactic when required, can bowl fast and full and swing the ball when movement is available.

England will hope he is not injury prone like all of their young seamers are.

If he can stay fit he will be a mainstay in the England team for years to come. He's got a nice, smooth action...good pace...good height. Knows how to hit the right areas. He can be very good but it remains to be seen if he can be great.

Looks promising. Skiddy, with decent skill set. Although, a very poor Windies batting line up is no judge on how good a bowler will end up being. LOL.

Bang average. Get him to play 5 tests in Australia and India and you'll see his level.
He should do well in Australia, they are serving up even more seamer friendly pitches than England are nowadays.

Shamar Joseph in this series has 2 wickets and averaging over 90 with the ball. In Australia, he had 13 wickets in 2 tests avg of 17.
Getting hammered here though so far.

Comfortably the best fast bowler in this series and it's his debut series.

Quality bowler.

Here the pitches are touch slow, bounce is not that high.

Will find out if he ia actually 'quality' when he plays aus and India.
Don't see anything special here.

Being successful in Aus for a seamer is not that big of a deal anymore, mainly due to the pitches that are prepared. Even Aamer Jamal took 18 wickets in Pak's tour.
Unless Aus revert to their old school flatties, no reason why he shouldn't take alot of wickets next Ashes.

I am certain he won't.
He will struggle badly in India as well.

I just don't see anything special in him. Sorry pom fans.

Gus Atkinson has been named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for July 2024 after his incredible heroics in the West Indies Test series. Gus's stats are impressive - 22 wickets in the series, including two five-fors and a four-wicket haul. But it's his passion, dedication, and love for the game that truly set him apart.

Gus Atkinson has been made unavailable for The Hundred's final by the ECB ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka.

Maiden Test hundred for Gus Atkinson and he's onto the Lord's honours board now. Brilliant batting from him before he got out on 118.

Congratulations to Atkinson.

This is his first century ever (both domestic and international).

Gus Atkinson is making history at Lord's! Being on both sides of the Honours Board is legendary stuff. What a talent - he is one of the best pullers in the game.

Players with a century and a 10-for(in career) at Lord's in Tests:

Ian Botham (1 century, 1 10-fer)
Stuart Broad (1 century, 1 10-fer)
Chris Woakes (1 century, 1 10-fer)
Gubby Allen (1 century, 1 10-fer)

He achieved this in only his 5th Test.

Gus Atkinson is making history look easy—what a sensational start to his Test career

Not only is he taking tons of wickets, he has so far not broken down in injury which is very rare for English fast bowlers. If he improves his batting he could be England's no.8 both home and away, England may have found their Jamieson-esque superstar

Pretty impressive start top his career. and Now he has a century to his name as well. England have found their potential number 8 IMO.

England red-ball captain Ben Stokes believes no player has made a bigger impact than Gus Atkinson has in his first summer of Test cricket. Stokes told Sky Sports:

"He has been amazing. I earmarked him as someone I thought could be successful at Test cricket on the India tour even though he didn't play a game."

"I watched him train for basically two months which is a hard thing to do as a player."

"He bowls at a high pace, he is a very skilful bowler and he has shown he has got more than just running in and bowling it fast."

"Seeing him bat before, I knew he had potential, and that 100 he got at Lord's, to say I wasn't surprised is a bit of an overstatement, but I have always known he has talent with the bat."

Former EastEnders star jailed for killing England cricket star’s mum

A former Eastenders star has been jailed for killing an England cricket star’s mum in a horror Uber crash.

Actor Youssef Berouain smashed into Gus Atkinson’s mum Caroline, 55, as she travelled in an Uber while driving at double the speed limit.

Police only realised he had disappeared seven months after the 2020 crash when they arrived at his London home to arrest him.

The Telegraph reported Berouain was able to flee the country and that Scotland Yard only realised he was gone seven months later when they arrived at his London home to charge him with various offences.

Southwark Crown Court heard Caroline was travelling back from a Christmas night out in an Uber on December 10, 2020, when Berouain’s Audi Q7 hit it.

The actor had been driving at 60mph in a 30mph zone in South West London, before the horror crash.

Caroline couldn’t be saved and was declared dead two hours later.

Police described Berouain smelling of cannabis when they arrived at the scene but he refused to give a roadside sample.

Berouain appeared at Southwark Crown Court and pleaded guilty to two charges of causing death by dangerous driving and careless driving on June 14.

The actor, who played a teen gang member called Tayo in Eastenders, was sentenced on July 26 where Caroline’s husband Ed read a moving victim impact statement.

The judge said: ‘Her death robbed her of the chance to become a grandmother, and her children and in due course grandchildren are forever deprived of her presence and love as their lives progress.

‘The picture that emerges from these statements is of a formidable woman, fiercely devoted to her children and who stood up for what was right. She was also evidently a community-minded individual.

‘I am very moved by her husband’s description of the street in which she lived being lined by hundreds of friends and mourners on the day of her funeral. That shows that she was a much-loved and respected woman.’

What I like most about him is his pace which is 135 to 143 consistently.

gets some movement too.

Yep. He is filling in the gap created by the absence of Broad and Anderson nicely.

He is another Bresnan, Woakes type player. England produce such players all the time.
