Juventus ordered to pay Cristiano Ronaldo 9.7m euros in back salary

Juventus must pay Cristiano Ronaldo (39) 9.7 million euros (£8.3m) in back wages for the 2020-21 season, the Italian courts announced on Wednesday.

The Court of Arbitration, to which Ronaldo appealed, "orders Juventus Turin to pay the sum of 9,774,166.66 euros", plus interest and procedural costs, it stated in its decision.

The sum equates to the difference between the salary actually received by Ronaldo and that which he should have received after tax and other deductions.

Ronaldo, who spent three seasons in Italy with Juventus before joining Manchester United in 2021 and then Saudi club Al Nassr, was claiming 19.5 million euros (£16.7) but the arbitration panel reduced that by 50 per cent.

Contacted by AFP, Juventus declined to comment, but said it would be issuing a statement "shortly".

According to the rankings drawn up by the American business magazine Forbes, the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was the world's highest-paid sportsman in 2023, with $136 million (£109.2m), including $46 million (£37m) in wages.

Juventus, who are listed on the stock exchange, recorded losses of 123.7 million euros (£106m) in the 2022-23 financial year, which ran to the end of June, it announced in October.

No provision has been made in the accounts of Italian football's most successful club, currently third in Serie A, for the payment of this wages backlog.

Cristiano Ronaldo Sparks Marriage Rumors With Georgina Rodriguez During Private Talk With Anthony Joshua

Nothing much has changed for Cristiano Ronaldo after moving away from Europe. The star continues to produce stellar performances on the pitch and will once again end the season as the top scorer in the league he plays for. But it appears that Ronaldo has gone a step further in his personal life. Moving to Saudi with his family, including his partner and children, is the Al Nassr captain on the verge of marrying Georgina Rodriguez? Hints were taken in a recent boxing match between Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury.

In his conversation with boxer Anthony Joshua, CR7 once brought some intrigue regarding his marriage. A video has shown Ronaldo sitting in the VIP lounge and saying, “My wife, she’s half Spanish and Argentinian, and she’s Latina,” addressing the Spanish lady as wife. And despite no reports suggesting that they are married already, there could be a possibility of the wedding bells ringing soon.

Notably, Ronaldo and Georgina have been dating since 2016, when CR7 met his soulmate in a Gucci store in Madrid. The 30-year-old was born in Argentina but grew up in Spain after she moved there when she was one. Rodriguez and Ronaldo presently live with five beautiful children, including two born to Rodriguez, a pair of twins through surrogacy, and Ronaldo’s eldest son, born to another mother.

Cristiano Ronaldo breaks two more goalscoring records in Al-Nassr's final league game of the season... as 39-year-old nets twice vs Al-Ittihad

Cristiano Ronaldo has shattered two more goalscoring records after bagging a brace in Al-Nassr's 4-2 victory over rivals Al-Ittihad on Monday.

The Portuguese superstar was at his brilliant best as he fired the Saudi Arabian hosts into the lead on the stroke of half time before doubling their advantage in the 69th minute.

Al-Ittihad, featuring former Chelsea star N'Golo Kante and ex-Liverpool midfielder Fabinho, looked to fight back with two goals near the end of the match but were unable to undo the damage done by Ronaldo and Co.

The evening was all about Ronaldo as his outstanding performance saw the 39-year-old continue his usual career trend of breaking new records.

Two strikes against Al-Ittihad ensured the former Real Madrid, Man United, and Juventus star would become the new holder for the most goals scored in a single Saudi Pro League season.

Ronaldo's early goal was his 34th of the season, before he struck again to set a new record after finding the back of the net 35 times in just 31 league outings in the Middle East.

The previous record for the most goals scored in a single season was held by Moroccan Abderrazak Hamdallah.

Meanwhile, his latest efforts also means Ronaldo is now the first-ever player to be a top scorer in four different leagues.

Ronaldo in tears as Al-Nassr lose King's Cup final

Cristiano Ronaldo was reduced to tears after his Al-Nassr side lost the King's Cup final to rivals Al-Hilal on Friday night in a game with three red cards.

The former Manchester United forward collapsed to his knees as nine-man Al-Hilal won 5-4 on a penalty shootout, with the score 1-1 after extra time in Jeddah.

The 39-year-old, who set a new Saudi Pro League scoring record with 35 goals, was consoled as he was led off the pitch and sat on the bench in tears.

The Portugal captain has scored 58 goals in 64 games for Al-Nassr since joining on a free transfer in January 2023 after leaving United, but finishes the season without a trophy.

His only piece of silverware in Saudi is last year's Arab Club Champions Cup win.

After former Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves missed the first penalty for Saudi Pro League champions Al-Hilal, former United defender Alex Telles also missed.

The teams then scored their next four penalties, including Ronaldo, before goalkeeper Yassine Bounou saved Al-Nassr's final spot-kicks as Al-Hilal sealed a domestic double.

Former Fulham striker Aleksandar Mitrovic opened the scoring for Al-Hilal in the seventh minute before goalkeeper David Ospina was sent off in the 56th minute.

Ayman Yahya scored a late equaliser to send the game to extra time in between red cards for Al-Hilal's Ali Al-Bulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly.

Ronaldo says record-breaking Al Nassr season ‘one of the best’ of his career

Superstar footballer Cristiano Ronaldo said his record-breaking Roshn Saudi League season – in which he netted 35 goals for Al Nassr Football Club was “one of the best seasons” of his career.

The Al Nassr captain and forward was presented with the Roshn Saudi League 2023/24 Top Goal scorer award after his incredible achievement of scoring 35 goals in just 31 games, according to a statement released by the Roshn Saudi League.

It set a Saudi Arabian record, with the five-time Ballon d’Or winner’s total overtaking Abderrazak Hamdallah's mark of 34 in 2018/19.

“It means a lot. I feel very happy. It’s probably one of the best seasons I’ve ever had in my career in terms of goals but assists too,” Ronaldo said in the statement.

“To be honest it means a lot because it’s my work. I have to be honest and say it’s not something I was looking for at the beginning of the season but over time I started to see that it was possible,” he added.

In addition to his goalscoring prowess in the league campaign, the 39-year-old Portuguese legend also recorded 11 assists.

Since joining Al Nassr in late December 2022, Ronaldo, whose team finished second in the Roshn Saudi League 2023/24 season, has scored 49 goals in 47 league appearances, and 64 goals in 69 games in all competitions.

In the calendar year 2023, he also netted the most club goals in the world with 54 strikes in 59 appearances. His 2023/24 strike rate included back-to-back hat-tricks against Al Tai and Abha in the Roshn Saudi League.

“I feel very proud to beat the Saudi league record. It’s great for me, I feel happy, and this is my motivation to play football, to train every time and to carry on like that.”

Ronaldo said his focus is now on Portugal and the 2024 European Championships – where his country will face the Czech Republic, Turkey and Georgia at the group stages in Germany – but he is also eagerly awaiting the 2024/25 Roshn Saudi League season.

“I think the goals for each season is kind of the same, it’s to do your best and win titles. If possible, to collect individual (trophies) as well but my goal is to be the same – to be the same Cristiano that you saw this season, to do my best, to achieve goals with Al Nassr and with my Portugal national team as well. To maintain my level is what I’m looking for,” Ronaldo added.

The Saudi Pro League (SPL), established in 2008 by the Saudi Arabian Football Federation's (SAFF) Statutes, is an open league of football comprising 18 clubs.

In charge of managing the highest division of professional football in Saudi Arabia, the SPL operates, promotes, and commercializes an annual, round-robin competition known as the Roshn Saudi League (RSL).

Ronaldo makes history by playing in 6th Euros

Cristiano Ronaldo added another record to his collection: He's the first man to appear in six different editions of the European Championship.

The 39-year-old broke a tie with former Real Madrid teammate Luka Modric when he started in Portugal's Euro 2024 opener against Czechia on Tuesday. Modric brought his tally to five when he took the pitch for Croatia's clash with Spain last week.

Ronaldo, who first played in the competition on home soil as a teenager in 2004, helped his country win its only continental title in 2016. He also holds the European Championship record for most goals, matches played, and tournaments with a goal.

There was uncertainty around his role with the national team after former manager Fernando Santos dropped him to the bench during the 2022 World Cup. But Ronaldo, who has since left Europe to join Saudi club Al-Nassr, has reclaimed his status as a central figure in the lineup under Roberto Martinez, scoring 10 goals in qualifying for this summer's event.

He played 90 minutes and found the net twice in Portugal's final pre-tournament friendly against Ireland, bringing his men's record tally to 130 goals in 207 international appearances.

After a record-breaking campaign in which he established a new Saudi Pro League mark with 35 goals in a single season, Martinez said the decorated veteran deserves his place in the loaded Portugal squad.

"Cristiano is in the team on merit, no one gets in by having a name," Martinez said during Monday's pre-match press conference, according to Tim Spiers of The Athletic. "He scored 51 goals in 50 games and he scored 10 in qualifying.

"For us he's a goalscorer, someone who can make that final move, stretch defenders, open spaces. He has changed his way of playing slightly, but he's in on merit and the numbers are there to back that up."

Ronaldo's compatriot Pepe - also part of the current Portuguese side - joins Modric on five European Championship appearances after earning the start Tuesday. At 41 years and 113 days old, Pepe is the oldest man to feature at a European Championship. The veteran defender took that record from Hungarian goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly, who was 40 when he last appeared, wearing his iconic sweatpants, at Euro 2016.

Spanish legend Iker Casillas also went to the Euros on five separate occasions but only played in three of those tournaments.

Euro 2024: Portugal game stopped four times by Ronaldo fans

Portugal's Euro 2024 Group F win against Turkey in Dortmund on Saturday was halted four times by supporters running onto the pitch for selfies with Cristiano Ronaldo, with a further two doing the same postmatch.

Ronaldo, now playing his club football in Saudi Arabia with Al Nassr, smiled and posed for a picture with a young boy who evaded security to run onto the playing surface in the 70th minute.

The child, aged around 10 years old, was hugged by Ronaldo before running away from security stewards until he was unable to escape their attentions on the side of the pitch.

When he was being led away, stewards and substitutes on the touchline patted the boy on the head, and the crowd inside the stadium cheered as he waved while being led away.

A teenage boy then attempted to repeat the stunt 15 minutes later, but Portugal captain Ronaldo threw his arms in the air and waved him away before security stopped the youngster from reaching the former Real Madrid and Manchester United player.

On both occasions, German referee Felix Zwayer was forced to delay the game until the youngsters were removed from the pitch.

Two more supporters, this time adult males, ran onto the pitch in stoppage time and headed toward Ronaldo with their phones before being stopped by security.

Finally, two more supporters repeated the trick once the final whistle had been blown, not interrupting the game but getting on the pitch nonetheless.

The incidents will trigger an automatic disciplinary investigation by UEFA over security inside the stadium, which is likely to host Germany's round-of-16 fixture and also a semifinal later in the tournament.

Ronaldo says he is playing his ‘last European Championship’

Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed this year’s European Championship will be the last of his career.

The Portugal superstar, who is 39, is playing at the Euros for a record sixth time and has helped his country reach the quarterfinals — where Kylian Mbappé and France await in Hamburg on Friday.

Speaking to Portuguese public broadcaster RTP after the penalty-shootout victory over Slovenia on Monday, Ronaldo said: “It is, without doubt, my last European Championship.

“But I’m not emotional about that. I’m moved by all that football means — by the enthusiasm I have for the game, the enthusiasm for seeing my supporters, my family, the affection people have for me.”

Ronaldo, who is one of the most prolific scorers in soccer history and has a record 14 goals at European Championships, said his main motivation now was “making people happy.” He was reduced to tears during the Slovenia game after having a penalty saved in extra time.

“It’s not about leaving the world of football,” he said. “What else is there for me to do or win? It’s not going to come down to one point more or one point less.”

'No decision' made on Ronaldo's Portugal future

Portugal manager Roberto Martinez says "no individual decisions" have been made on the international futures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe after their loss to France at Euro 2024.

Both players have been a regular feature in the Portugal side throughout the tournament, with 39-year-old Ronaldo playing every minute of both the shootout win over Slovenia in the last 16 and the defeat on penalties by France in the quarter-finals.

Pepe has also made history at the tournament, becoming the oldest player in European Championship history aged 41.

The pair shared a long embrace on the pitch after Friday's loss, with Pepe in tears as Ronaldo consoled him.

"His tears are frustration," said Martinez. "Pepe is a role model in Portuguese football. What he did tonight and in the tournament will stay with us for the next generations."

When asked whether the two players had just featured for Portugal for the final time, Martinez answered: "No. Everything is too raw. We are still suffering the defeat.

"There's no individual decisions at this point"

More shots than any other player - but no goals

Ronaldo has endured a difficult tournament, with his place in the side constantly questioned as he failed to score in any of his five appearances.

The former Manchester United and Real Madrid forward was left in tears after missing an extra-time penalty after Slovenia - although he made amends by scoring in the shootout as Portugal went through.

But he again cut a frustrated figure during the defeat by France - and now there are doubts over whether he will play for his country again.

"They probably know it's the end of the line in the national team, perhaps. Where do you go from here?" former Portugal defender Jose Fonte told BBC Sport.

"They've achieved so much, they've done so much for Portugal, sometimes you just have to give your place to the young boys coming up and let them show their talent."

Ronaldo's stats at Euro 2024 do not make for good reading.
  • It is the first time Ronaldo has failed to score at a major international - with Euro 2024 his 11th.
  • He has not scored in open play at a major tournament since the group stage of the last Euros in 2021.
  • He had 23 shots in Portugal's five games at Euro 2024 - more than any other player - and failed to score.
  • His expected goals across all fives games is 0.692
Despite his struggles in front of goal manager Martinez has resisted the urge to drop him to the bench.

BBC Sport pundit Chris Sutton says Martinez has an "obsession" with Ronaldo and shows a "lack of imagination" by keeping him on.

Ronaldo is managing the team and Martinez isn't when you have options like they do on the bench - he is hampering them," said Sutton.

Danny Murphy added: "It does seem ridiculous at times that he keeps Ronaldo on when he is having no impact."

Cristiano Ronaldo leads Al-Nassr to Super Cup final

Cristiano Ronaldo made a triumphant return to action, scoring and assisting in Al-Nassr's 2-0 victory on Wednesday over Al-Taawoun in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final at Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Sports City Stadium, setting the stage for a potential silverware win.

Following a disappointing end to his Euro 2024 campaign with Portugal, Ronaldo wasted no time in making an impact, assisting Ayman Yahya's goal in the eighth minute after Sadio Mane's strong run down the left flank. Al-Nassr secured their place in the final, where they will face Al-Hilal, Goal reported.

Ronaldo's contribution didn't stop with the assist; he added to the scoreline with his first goal of the 2024-25 season in the 57th minute. Yahya's efforts on the right wing led to a cross that found right-back Sultan Al-Ghannam, who then set up Ronaldo for a precise finish. The Portuguese star was close to scoring a second goal, but the woodwork denied him.

Ahead of the match, Ronaldo had shared a glimpse of his intense training on Instagram, captioning it "Ready to go!"

Despite some pressure from Al-Taawoun, Al-Nassr's Brazilian goalkeeper Bento made crucial saves in the first half to keep the lead intact. Before halftime, Ronaldo set up Mane for another chance, but Al-Taawoun's goalkeeper, Mailson Santos, made a vital stop. Ultimately, Al-Nassr's solid performance, led by Ronaldo, ensured their progression to the final, where they will compete for more silverware.

Ronaldo raves about life in Saudi Arabia and attractions like Red Sea, AlUla

Cristiano Ronaldo said adapting to Saudi Arabia was easy for him and his family as the football star gushed about his life in the Kingdom and its many attractions such as the Red Sea and the ancient Arabic oasis, AlUla.

“To be honest, I am really happy to be there [Saudi Arabia],” Ronaldo, who plays for the Saudi football club, Al Nassr, said in an interview with former Portuguese footballer, Rio Ferdinand.

He added: “It is a lovely country; I love to be there; my family loves to be there. The adaptation for me wasn’t too difficult.”

The Portuguese football star called Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea his “second house,” adding that he loves to spend time there with his family.

“The Red Sea which is my second home or [even my] first home is unbelievable like a diamond,” he said adding that it is “one of the most beautiful places” he has ever been to.

Ronaldo also spoke on AlUla, an increasingly famous tourist spot in Saudi Arabia’s northwest located near two oases, Khaybar and Tayma.

“It is beautiful because it is spiritual and you can feel the energy there,” he said.

Ronaldo committed to Al Nassr and Portugal, dismisses retirement talk

Cristiano Ronaldo says he has no intention to retire from international football yet after facing criticism in the European Championship, but he does not expect it to be a “difficult decision” when the time comes.

Ronaldo led Portugal in the EURO 2024 championship where his country was knocked out in the quarterfinals by France. He quickly faced criticism after an unconvincing campaign in which he failed to hit the back of the net in five appearances.

“That’s all from the press. It never crossed my mind that my cycle had come to an end. Quite the opposite, it gave me even more motivation to continue to be honest,” Ronaldo told a press conference on Monday ahead of Portugal’s Nations League matches against Croatia and Scotland.

“The motivation is to come to the national team to win the Nations League,” he said. “We have already won it once, and we want to do it again.”

Portugal will face Croatia in their Nations League opener on Thursday before clashing with Scotland on Sunday. The country is the inaugural champion of the UEFA Nations League, having lifted the trophy in 2018-19 by defeating Netherlands in the final.

Having entered EURO 2016 as underdogs, Portugal won the championship after beating heavyweight France under Ronaldo’s captainship, who was forced to exit the field after just 25 minutes after colliding with Dimitri Payet in the ninth minute.

This year’s EURO campaign in Germany was the sixth major finals Ronaldo has featured in, a record, and he became the first European player in history to make 50 appearances at major tournaments.

“Until the end of my career, I will always have the mindset that I will be a starter,” the Portuguese said.

“What I feel at the moment, and the coach’s [Roberto Martinez] words also demonstrate this, is that I continue to be an asset to the national team and I will be the first to admit if that isn’t the case.”

Ronaldo, 39, who currently plays for the Saudi football club Al Nassr added that he would move on “when the time comes.”

“If I feel like I am no longer contributing anything, I’ll be the first to leave,” he said. “When the time comes, I’ll move on. It won’t be a difficult decision to make.”

Ronaldo holds the record for the most caps and goals of any player in men’s international football, scoring 130 times in 212 games. He is also the Champions League record scorer with 140 goals from 183 appearances for Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus. He was the top scorer in seven seasons, including a record 27 goals in 2013-14, and is the only player to score in three finals.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner has previously said he plans to end his career with Al Nassr but probably not for another two or three years.

“I don’t know if I will retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will retire here at Al Nassr,” Ronaldo told Portuguese channel Now in August.

before ronaldo was clear in terms of popularity however i would say since the worldcup win and move to mls messi has bridged the gap
Naw he hasn't. He really hasn't. Although tbf Messi is the 2nd most famous person in the world 100%.

I am guessing Ronaldo may play till 2026 WC (assuming Portugal would select him which is a big "if"). Don't see him play after that.

Ronaldo criticises Ten Hag & says Man Utd must 'rebuild everything'

Cristiano Ronaldo has criticised Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag and said the club must "rebuild everything" in order to compete for football's biggest prizes again.

The Dutch boss is under pressure after United's eighth-placed finish last season - their lowest in Premier League history - and two defeats in their opening three games at the start of this campaign.

And Ronaldo, who had two spells at the club before leaving for Saudi Arabian side Al-Nassr, questioned Ten Hag's mentality.

"The coach says they cannot compete to win the [Premier] League and Champions League," he told the Rio Ferdinand Presents podcast, external, which comes out on Thursday.

"As Manchester United coach, you cannot say that you're not going to fight to win the league or Champions League.

"Mentally [you can] say maybe we don't have that potential, but I cannot say that. We're going to try, you have to try.

"What I wish for Manchester [United], it's what I wish for me - [to be] the best team they can.

"I love that club... I'm not that kind of guy that forgot the past."

In his six-year first spell at United, Ronaldo won three Premier League titles, the Champions League, two League Cups and an FA Cup - as well as the Fifa Club World Cup and Community Shield - before transferring to Real Madrid in 2009.

He re-joined United from Juventus in August 2021 and scored a total of 145 goals in 346 appearances for the club before he moved to Al-Nassr in December 2022.

Just a month earlier, Ronaldo had told presenter Piers Morgan he was being "betrayed" and pushed out in a controversial television interview.

And speaking to former United team-mate Ferdinand on his podcast, the Portugal forward said there had been "no evolution" following former boss Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement in 2013.

United have not won a Premier League title since then, but co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to restore them to their former glories after purchasing a 25% stake in the club and his Ineos team taking over football operations.

Ronaldo added: "They need to rebuild everything, in my opinion.

"The club needs time to rebuild because it's still one of the best clubs in the world, but they need to change. They understand that this is the only way.

"This is why they show, they start to change again, the structure of the club, the infrastructures and everything. The owners of the club are investing in the training ground so I'm happy [because things are changing].

"I believe that the future will be bright. I believe, but they don't depend only on the talents. They have to rebuild from the bottom. If not, they cannot compete. It will be impossible."

Ronaldo, however, has praised the club's decision to recruit another former team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy to Ten Hag's backroom staff.

"If Ten Hag listens to Ruud, maybe he can [help himself]," he added.

"I think it can help a lot because he knows the club and the club should listen [to] the guys who were there.

"You [Rio] or Roy Keane or Paul Scholes or Gary Neville [or] Sir Alex Ferguson. You cannot rebuild a club without knowledge - not guys who work in [the] office.

"The people who understand the football are the people who were there in the dressing room. They know how to deal with the players.

"So I believe that Ruud is going to help because he was inside the club. He knows the club, he knows the fans. If the coach listens to him, I think they can improve a little bit the club."

Cristiano Ronaldo hits 1bn social media followers

Cristiano Ronaldo has hit 1bn total followers across his various social media accounts - making him the first person to reach that mind-boggling figure.

The number is calculated by combining his total number of followers across Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and Chinese social media sites Weibo and Kuaishou.

It does not equate to one billion individual followers, as many people will follow him across multiple platforms, and some will be fake accounts, known as bots.

Nonetheless social media expert Paolo Pescatore, from PP Foresight, described it as a "staggering number" that media and brands would pay close attention to.

"What an achievement, and it further underlines the fundamental shift taking place in media."

It showed "the power to reach new, younger audiences thanks to technology", he told the BBC.

On the pitch, Ronaldo was famed for his rivalry with Argentinian star Lionel Messi.

But off it, there is no competition for who is winning the social media contest - Messi has a mere 623 million followers.

Some of the other celebrities with the biggest presence on social media are:

  • 690m: Selena Gomez, actor/singer
  • 607m: Justin Bieber, singer
  • 574m: Taylor Swift, singer
Other notable names the BBC looked into include The Rock (557m), Kylie Jenner (551m ) and Ariana Grande (508m).

MrBeast, the top YouTuber in the world, has 543m total followers, while WWE, often considered to have an enormous social media presence, can only point to reaching a quarter of the audience of Cristiano Ronaldo with 268m combined followers.

The footballer will have reached this milestone thanks to his decision to join YouTube last month, where his channel rocketed to 50 million subscribers within a single week.

So far, the channel consists mainly of conversations between Ronaldo and his wife Georgina Rodríguez, as well as his former Manchester United colleague Rio Ferdinand.

He announced the news in a post shared across his various social media platforms.

Cristiano Ronaldo has made a career out of breaking records.

His successes include being top scorer in Uefa Champions League history, having the most goals in the European Championship, and making more international appearances than anyone else.

Last week he became the first footballer to score 900 top-level career goals.

As with his playing career, he still has scope to improve his numbers on social media too, as unlike some of his rivals, he is not on TikTok or Threads.

All of which is likely to add to another figure he dominates: earnings.

According to Forbes, his total earnings now stand at $260 million - the highest of any athlete.

Virus-hit Cristiano Ronaldo to miss Asian Champions League opener

Cristiano Ronaldo was diagnosed on Sunday with a viral infection and will miss Al Nassr's Asian Champions League opener this week at Iraq's Al Shorta.

The Portuguese veteran is targeting Asia's top club crown to add to his long list of achievements when the competition kicks off on Monday.

"Al Nassr captain Cristiano Ronaldo was not feeling well today and was diagnosed with a viral infection," said a club statement posted on social media platform X on Sunday.

"The team's doctor confirmed he needs to rest and stay at home. As a result he will not be travelling with the team to Iraq today. We wish our captain a speedy recovery."

Cristiano Ronaldo says he "no longer cares" about being the best player in the world and is focused on helping his team-mates

Ronaldo, 39, joined Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in January 2023 after leaving Manchester United.

On Monday the former Real Madrid and Juventus star scored in Al-Nassr's 2-1 win against Qatari side Al-Rayyan in the AFC Champions League group stage.

"It is not important anymore whether I am the best or not, I no longer care about that," the Portugal captain said after the match.

"It is good for a player to score goals, but for me it is better for the team to win.

"I am used to breaking records and I no longer look for them. The most important thing for me now is to enjoy and help Al-Nassr and my team-mates to win."

The attacker has won the Ballon d'Or on five occasions but has not been shortlisted for the 2024 award.

After scoring the 904th goal of his career, Ronaldo pointed to the sky rather than performing his usual goal celebration.

"My goal against Al-Rayyan was different and important because my father would have been happy with it if he was alive, as today [Monday] is his birthday," he said.

In August Ronaldo said that he will likely end his career with Al-Nassr.

"I don't know if I will retire soon, in two or three years, but probably I will retire here at Al-Nassr," he said.

Ronaldo helped Al-Nassr win the Arab Club Champions Cup in 2023, but he has not won a domestic title or continental-level silverware with the team.

Last May Ronaldo became the top scorer in a single season in the Saudi Pro League with 35 goals.

The Portugal captain also scored his 901st career goal in a 2-1 win over Scotland in the Nations League last month.

Speaking at a press conference following Al Nassr's victory over Al Rayyan, Ronaldo stated that his focus has shifted away from individual accolades:

"It is not important anymore whether I am the best or not, I no longer care about that,"

"It is good for a player to score goals, but for me it is better for the team to win."

"I am used to breaking records and I no longer look for them. The most important thing for me now is to enjoy and help Al Nassr and my teammates to win."

Ronaldo fan travels for seven months on bicycle to meet footballer

Cristiano Ronaldo's fans are considered some of the most die-hard fans in the world and the fandom has again proved its admiration after one of them cycled 13,000 kilometres for seven months from China to Saudi Arabia just to meet the Al Nassr player.

Gong, a 24-year-old fan of CR7, started his long journey from the province of Anhui this year on March 18 and finally met Ronaldo in front of the Al Nassr Football Club on October 20, South China Morning Post reported.

The fanatic first travelled to north to Beijing and then to the west. He then made his way from Xinjiang to Kazakhstan and continued his journey by passing six other countries including Georgia, Iran, Qatar and Armenia to reach Riyadh, where Ronaldo is currently based, as per WION.

The superstar's superfan came up with the idea of cycling all the way to Riyadh after CR7 cancelled his trip to China in February due to an injury.

In his journey, Gong carried with him two power banks, a tent, cooking utensils, clothing and other essentials.

Gong’s seven-month trip was not without hurdles as he faced language barriers in countries he travelled to, eating in countries where prices were high to suit his pocket was a challenge and lastly, the exhaustion that comes with cycling for such a long time.

But he still made it out and tackled these obstacles by eating just bread in places where the prices were high and communicating with people using translation software.

Gong says that while he was in Armenia in August, he caught a high fever and collapsed on the road but he received free treatment for his illness at the hospital.

When the fan reached Riyadh on October 10, he could not meet Ronaldo immediately instead he had to wait for a few days as the player was in Europe.

The Al Nassr staff had promised him a one-minute fan meeting and he even got to see Ronaldo in action live for the first time after a fan offered Gong tickets to the Al Nassr vs Al Shabab match.

Gong reveals that when he finally met with Ronaldo after such a tenuous journey, CR7 shook his hand and hugged him as well.

He also signed an Al Nassr No 7 jersey and a banner with Gong’s friends’ names on it and a quote written on it.

Considered to be among the greatest-ever footballers in history, Ronaldo signed a contract where he would earn 200 million Euros per year, including a guaranteed salary of 90 million Euros, with commercial and sponsorship deals bringing his total annual salary to 200 million.
