[VIDS] Southern Brave crowned men's Hundred champions after beating Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs

Even commentary team not understanding 100 well.. She said last ball of the over when Cullan bowling 6th ball..

Incredible shot by Benjamin. First time I have ever seen something like that. Essentially a reverse scoop shot.

Unknown 22-year-old Chris Benjamin catapulted himself into the spotlight by leading Birmingham Phoenix to a stunning last-gasp victory over London Spirit in the men's Hundred.

In a thrilling finish that swung one way and then the other, Benjamin, who only made his professional debut five days ago, hit 24 not out from 15 balls to take Phoenix to a three-wicket win.

They needed 24 runs from 14 balls when Benny Howell was dismissed but Benjamin smashed two sixes - one of them an audacious reverse scoop over his shoulder - and a four, sending the sizeable home crowd wild.

That left Birmingham requiring one from the last five and, despite Chris Cooke falling, Adam Milne hit the winning runs with three balls to spare.

It capped another entertaining game for The Hundred, which also included stunning catches and expert bowling.

Zak Crawley earlier hit 64 for London Spirit, who are captained by England skipper Eoin Morgan and coached by Australia legend Shane Warne.

Never seen such forced targeting. All they are interested is in getting children to watch cricket but what about the young adults? Cricket can't survive without young adults.

Fantastic c&b by Milne - takes out Spirit's Bopara (17)

Some of the hype is a bit too desperate and staged.

Is there room for this and T20s?

ECB have played a blinder with the 100.

While the plan is to attract a larger demographic to cricket, the long term gains are far more interesting.

The 100 provides English players with more exposure to 'agressive' cricket compared to the handful that play in worldwide franchise leagues. Plus the timing of the tournament bodes well with the schedule of summer cricket for both England, and touring sides. Who needs warmup/practise matches when the 100 could provide regular games before a summer international series, and a side salary to go with it!

With a game about 3 hrs, it's quite possible that 2 matches can be played in a day, paving the way for a super-cup esq tournament.

I say in about 5 years the 100 could replace T20 blast as the premier 'T20' tournament in England/Wales.

If the 100 is a success, then I wouldn't be surprised if the ECB forbid their players to play in foriegn leagues, just as prevent Indian players from doing so.

Great potential with the new format.

Luke Wood's action reminds me of a left handed Aaqib Javed

Despite making his return to action for Sussex Sharks in the last round of the T20 Blast, Jofra Archer has been deemed not fully fit, and so won't play for Southern Brave in their opening men's game of The Hundred.

It's been a week of firsts in the Hundred - the first game in the women's and men's competitions, then the first double-header, then the first double double-header, which included the first five-wicket haul.

Trent Rockets' Marchant de Lange, your name is in the record books.

The quick bowler from South Africa was a late call-up for the tournament after Pakistan's Wahab Riaz was unable to play because of visa issues. De Lange took no time settling in, taking 5-20 from 20 balls as the Rockets restricted Southern Brave to 126-8.

Brave were indebted to Ross Whiteley, who made a 29-ball unbeaten 39, but their score looked below par on what is normally a high-scoring Trent Bridge ground.

They gave themselves a chance when George Garton, part of the England squad for the limited-overs against Sri Lanka this month, bowled Alex Hales.

But England's Dawid Malan - the top-ranked Twenty20 batsman in the world - made an unbeaten 62 in an unbroken stand of 124 with D'Arcy Short as Rockets cruised to a nine-wicket win with 18 balls to spare.

Faf Du Plessis ruled out for opening three games, with Ben Stokes set to lead the Northern Superchargers men's team.

Northern Superchargers men's captain Faf Du Plessis has been ruled out of the opening three games of The Hundred, as the batter continues to suffer symptoms of concussion.

The former South African captain took a blow to the head whilst playing in the Pakistan Super League earlier this year, suffering concussion which prevented him from taking any further part in the competition.

The Northern Superchargers medical team have been assessing the 37-year-old since his arrival last Friday and have decided it is in the best interests of the batter to rest for the opening three games. They will continue to monitor his progress.

England all-rounder Ben Stokes, who led the white-ball team to a 50-over series win over Pakistan last week, will take the reigns for the opening two games.
Tom Kohler-Cadmore has recovered from the broken finger injury that kept the Yorkshire batter out of action for much of the Vitality Blast. Brydon Carse has been cleared to play following concussion checks after the Durham all-rounder was hit in the head whilst bowling in Durham’s final Vitality Blast game on Sunday.

Great game.

Impressive spell from Qais Ahmed; very good control of line, length and varying his pace.

Harry Brook with a fighting knock as Super Chargers seemed out of it for much of the 2nd innings.

Good advert for the format. Purists (would regard myself as one too) will cling to the classic formats but this will certainly entertain.

Additionally, it was good to see the umpires enforce the rules regarding over-rate cut-off times.

A slow over rate is punishable by reducing the number of players, you can have outside the circle, for the last 10 balls, by 1 - so 5 as opposed to 4 have to be in the circle for the last 10 balls.

Very impressed with Qais Ahmed, match-winning performance.

Jake Ball held his nerve as Welsh Fire won a high-scoring, see-sawing match against Northern Superchargers in the men's Hundred at Headingley.

Chasing 174, Superchargers needed 11 from the last five balls but England bowler Ball limited them to five and in doing so secured a five-run win.

After Ball nailed a mix of slower balls, Matty Potts needed six from the last delivery for a tie but managed only a single.

Superchargers looked out of the game in their chase at 50-4, with Ben Stokes back in the pavilion, before a stunning assault from 22-year-old Harry Brook.

He hit five sixes in his 62 from 31 balls but was dismissed by Qais Ahmad, who took a remarkable 4-13, with 37 runs still needed.

Earlier Stokes won a tussle when England team-mate Jonny Bairstow, having him caught in the deep but not before Bairstow racked up 56 from 36 balls.

What an innings by Jemeiah Rodrigues in the hundred women's competition. Being 4 down for nothing and then scoring 92 and take her team home. Well played even Kevin Pietersen had high praises for her.

What happened?

The match between the London Spirit and the Oval Invincibles has been abandoned without a ball being bowled due to heavy showers at Lord's.

In the women's match at Old Trafford, Birmingham Phoenix are on the verge of victory against Manchester Originals. The Originals are tottering at 79/6 needing 35 runs off 12 balls.

Matt Parkinson's just gotten rid of his Lancashire team mate Livingstone by inducing a catch towards gully. It was a sharp turning leg-break which Livingstone tried to dab through the off-side.

Birmingham are 37/3 off 32 balls.

Meanwhile, in the earlier women's match, Scottish leg-spinner Abtaha Maqsood, renowned for wearing a headscarf on the field, bowled well and took 2/14 off her 20 balls against the Manchester team.

She plays for Scotland, I wonder if England will play them in T20 WC next year.

The organisers and mercenary players in this tournament are trying their best to dig cricket’s grave. As if T-20 was not enough. Hope not many from big-3 participates in this crime.

Kohli has spoken against the format but on the other hand, a lot of Indian women are playing in this tournament. The ball is in BCCI's court.

For that they will need money more than anything. Money offered in the first season is nothing to make England players play only in 100. The top contract is 100K which is less than even CPL let alone IPL and aggressive brand of cricket? A team gets out for 84 within 87 balls, I don't get how is that aggressive.

Manchester Originals' Matt Parkinson bamboozled Birmingham Phoenix with a sensational spell of leg-spin bowling as the visitors became the first team to be bowled out in The Hundred at Emirates Old Trafford.

On a slow, used pitch Birmingham were bowled out for just 87, with 16 balls of their innings remaining.

Parkinson took 4-9 - including three in a four-ball spell - from 19 balls.

Manchester got off to a rapid start in reply, being 43-1 after the 25-ball powerplay, largely thanks to Phil Salt's 11-ball 22.

Jos Buttler made 30, but was bowled with the Originals needing three to win, leaving Carlos Brathwaite to pump a four down the ground and secure a six-wicket victory with 27 balls to spare.

They join three other teams - including Birmingham - on two points, with Oval Invincibles top of the men's competition with three points.

The wicket was used in England's Twenty20 win against Pakistan on Tuesday - a match that saw 11 wickets fall to spin - and in the women's Hundred game between Manchester and Birmingham earlier on Sunday.

Birmingham won that game by 20 runs to pick up their first win of the competition.

The Hundred is too much like T20.

Good things
- Womens and Mens matches happened on same day.
- Shorter time for a game.
- Finally a city based game.

Bad things.
- Overall quality of players is lacking.
- Too much like T20.
- Not enough diversity in the teams.

Changes required:
Something to make it unique.
- change run structure ie. 4 is a five. 6 is a 10.
- running single is 0 and running two equals 1.
- Allow Buy back of wicket for 20runs max twice for anyone.
- 5 balls selected at random for double runs.
- 100 balls max per innings, 5 bowlers max 20balls.
- Bowling team can buy 10 balls for a bowler for 20 runs.
- A player can be caught and run out. Two wickets possible in one ball.
- nicer team colours..... and brand names.
- max 3 players international per match.
- maybe split 50 ball innings per team.

Main thing:
Currently its just lacking high quality international players.
too much hype most of the time but something missing.

The Trent Rockets Head Coach, Andy Flower, along with two other members of the team’s support staff, will be absent from this evening’s fixture in The Hundred at Trent Bridge after testing positive for Covid-19.

Steven Mullaney and another support staff member have also been withdrawn from tonight’s game after being identified as close contacts.

Paul Franks will step in as Head Coach for the match against Northern Superchargers, which will commence at 6.30pm.

Common sense dictates that the coaching staff and the rest of the Nottingham players are part of the same bubble, and given that they sat in the dugout two days ago, it is mystifying that only two other people are identified as close contacts. It's a fairly blasé attitude to have.

Poor start for Northern Titans/Super Kings/Deccan Chargers at 25/2 off 25 balls.

These pitches are too dry to produce high-scoring matches.

The Northern Superchargers have collapsed to 110/8 off 88 balls, some really ordinary batting off the last few deliveries.

Northern Superchargers are bowled out for 132, could be a tricky chase on a dying pitch for the Trent Rockets with Adil Rashid and Mujeeb ur Rehman in the opposition attack.

For the second night in a row a team is bowled out in The Hundred.

This time it's the Superchargers who are bowled out for 132.

Used wickets causing issues.

Ngl I tried giving it a chance but I just can't get into it.

The novelty wore off quickly for me. I also can't stand the graphics on the screen.

Alex Hales capitalised on Ben Stokes' drop to lead Trent Rockets to a thrilling, unlikely two-wicket victory over Northern Superchargers in the men's Hundred.

Chasing 133, the Rockets needed 42 from 24 balls with three wickets left when Stokes dropped Hales on the boundary edge - the ball also going for six.

To add to the drama, Hales had previously only managed a single from that delivery before Stokes seemed to insist it was re-bowled because of a pitch invader.

Until then, Hales had struggled to lay bat on ball but thumped David Willey for a towering six to seal the win with six balls to spare, sending a large Trent Bridge crowd wild.

Caught the last bit of the Superchargers vs Rockets, was a decent game. The graphics layout is definitely obtrusive, but given the whole competition is designed to appeal to kids, I can see why they've made it quite that prominent and colourful.

I'm surprised it took ECB so long to develop a a T20 league with city teams. The Hundred has some of the hottest crowds you get to see in any T20 league. I think only IPL has hotter crowds but that's down to the sheer size of the crowds themselves. But you certainly don't see these kind of partisan home crowds who are 100% engaged into the match, in their County T20 Competition, or the PSL or Big Bash for that matter.

A big reason for that might be the fact that every team plays their home matches on their home ground, which is not the case in the PSL for now, but man they really elevate any particular match for me.

What a thrilling game enjoyed every minute, you can’t mindlessly slog and need to apply yourself. Low scoring thrillers are a lot of fun. Initial impressions all positive from me, was at the game in Edgbaston to and it was an electric atmosphere and all involved, not seen so many kids and women happy at the grounds in a while! which is a bonus. Nice exposure for our talent to, this tournie will really show the level of depth in England when it comes to the white ball cricket

I was at the Edgbaston too. It was the worst atmosphere there ever been whenever I went to Edgbaston and I went to NZ Test too. Never seen Hollies so empty

The atmosphere was outstanding which was adamant on all accounts regardless of how one was watching with an excellent crowd in, I’ve seen many games in my time here as a local, but this was pretty special and exciting

“ Alex Hales admitted that the buzz around the ground on a remarkable night of Hundred action at Trent Bridge was reminiscent of his England days”

You never hear such compliments for other domestic tournaments in this part of the world, there’s a lot of potential here to create something special Mamoon

WT20s should be merged into The Hundred too so that they could save some more time and make it a complete 3 hour format.

Don't see any point of having both T20 and hundred ball format.

I’d be inclined to agree but would miss the competitiveness of the WT20, should keep that in any case there are changes

after slight reservations i have thoroughly enjoyed the cricket on offer, yesterday i even watched with a few mates who had 0 interest in cricket previously however they enjoyed the Alex Hales special , looks like its working.

When is this garbage going to end? It's just colourful graphics on a TV screen.

The women's tournament has clearly missed having the best players in the world, they eventually need Meg Lanning, Alyssa Healy, & Ellyse Perry playing this tournament.

Finally managed to watch some portion of a Hundred match today, really surprised to see so many empty seats around the stadium. Has it not been received well?

The Welsh Fire finish at 165 on perhaps the flattest batting pitch of the tournament thus far. Should be an interesting chase for the Southern Brave.

I went to Edgbaston on Friday and it was the emptiest it had been for a high profile game since crowds have been allowed back. I went to three games in the last few months, Eng vs NZ, Eng vs Pakistan and Hundred game. Hundred games had the worst crowd in sense of numbers even when the restrictions had been lightened. Mind you both the other games were on weekdays yet they were full but Hundred game had 60 percent squad on a Friday afternoon, they were literally handing in tickets.

Jonny Bairstow plundered a scintillating 72 from 39 balls to set up an entertaining victory for Welsh Fire over Southern Brave.

When Tom Banton hit the second ball of the game for six, there was already a sense that a high-scoring contest was about to unfold.

A partnership of 116 between Bairstow and Ben Duckett (53) set up a commanding total of 165-4 - meaning Welsh Fire have hit two of the highest scores batting first in the tournament so far.

Southern Brave fought back with late wickets and made a thrilling start to their run chase, racing to 41 from the first 15 balls, but Welsh Fire's bowlers held their nerve and took wickets at crucial times to swing the game back in their favour.

Both matches in the Hundred at Old Trafford today abandoned due to heavy rain. Grim weather in Manchester, as usual.

London Spirit have won the toss and elected to field first in this evening's game at Lord's.

Teams:

London Spirit 1 Adam Rossington, 2 Josh Inglis, 3 Joe Denly, 4 Eoin Morgan (capt), 5 Ravi Bopara, 6 Mohammad Nabi, 7 Roelof van der Merwe, 8 Chris Wood, 9 Blake Cullen, 10 Mason Crane, 11 Mohammad Amir.

Trent Rockets 1 Alex Hales, 2 D'Arcy Short, 3 Dawid Malan, 4 Tom Moores, 5 Lewis Gregory, 6 Samit Patel, 7 Rashid Khan, 8 Luke Wood, 9 Matt Carter, 10 Marchant de Lange, 11 Timm van der Gugten.

I'm at Lords watching.

Been a very long day already...

Not sure how much longer I can stay here before I head off home..

Big wicket of Hales.

London bowling well.

Trent Rockets finish at 123 off their 100 balls.

D'Arcy Short anchored the innings (if you can call it anchoring in a 100 ball game) with 70 not out. Mohammad Nabi and Mason Crane were the pick of the bowlers for London Spirit with figures of 2/20 and 1/16 off their 20 deliveries respectively.

Another sluggish pitch in this tournament.

Trent Rockets maintained their 100% record in the men's Hundred as they edged past London Spirit in a low-scoring thriller at Lord's.

Rockets were put into bat on a pitch that had seen two women's Hundred's matches played on it, and they stuttered to 123-4 - D'Arcy Short's 47-ball 69 the highlight.

Spirit were struggling at 48-5 and 93-8, but a 23-run partnership between Blake Cullen and Roelof van der Merwe left them needing nine to win from the final three balls.

But Marchant de Lange went for a single down to third, before two dot balls sealed a seven-run win in front of 23,892 fans.

Spirit, who are coached by Australia great Shane Warne and captained by England's World Cup-winning captain Eoin Morgan, are still without a win from their opening three games.

Rockets top the eight-team table, while Spirit sit sixth.
