[VIDS] Southern Brave crowned men's Hundred champions after beating Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs

Its quite enjoyable but in all honesty its low quality cricket.

Some of the bowling is awful and makes for poor viewing.

However, the atmosphere in the ground and the reasonably good standard of coverage make it watchable. I haven't been gripped by any game but its nice background viewing.

Test matches are more soothing in the background though especially the sound of rain

Northern Superchargers racked up 200 in an incredible 69-run win over Manchester Originals as the visitors wilted at a raucous Headingley in the local derby.

The Originals dropped four catches as Superchargers scored 200-5, comfortably the highest score of the tournament so far.

John Simpson hit a remarkable 71 from 28 balls and the partisan crowd grew louder and louder as the ball sailed into the stands and chances were missed.

It was a miserable night for the Originals players - none more so than former England bowler Steven Finn who conceded 51 runs from his 15 balls.

Faced with an almost impossible task, they were never in their chase and were dismissed for 131 off the final ball.

"The Northern Superchargers were unreal," said Originals' women's spinner Alex Hartley.

"They were striking the ball with such ease. They put on an absolute show."

The win kept alive the Superchargers' hopes of reaching the latter stages of the tournament, moving them to fourth in the table - a point behind third having played a game more.

The Originals can still qualify but are now sixth, relying on results to go their way.

Birmingham Phoenix surged to the top of the men's Hundred table after a comfortable win over rivals Trent Rockets at Trent Bridge.

Liam Livingstone smashed 50 off 30 balls and Miles Hammond also scored a quickfire 38 off 20 as Phoenix posted 166-6.

Debutant Dillon Pennington, who ended with 2-11 from 15 deliveries, took two wickets as Rockets fell to 28-3 in reply.

Steven Mullaney, who earlier took a great catch on the boundary to dismiss Livingstone, hit 49 off 33 deliveries to give his side a chance before he fell to Pat Brown, the seamer the pick of the Phoenix bowlers with 3-27.

Phoenix overtake Southern Brave in top spot, while Rockets remain third.

Livingstone lights up the Midlands derby

On Thursday we were treated to The Hundred's first team score of 200.

And for a moment it looked like we could be heading for that landmark again with Phoenix on 90-1 after 55 balls.

Rockets may have pulled their rivals back, but Liam Livingstone's match-winning knock proved to be the difference.

Some players seem to thrive off pressure, and Livingstone is SOME player.

Having been handed the captaincy in the absence of Moeen Ali, who is playing for England in the second Test against India, Livingstone did not buckle under the added responsibility.

Whether it was a top edge or a powerful punch, Livingstone still managed to find the boundary. His knock included three sixes and four fours.

Statement from The Hundred:

Faf du Plessis will return to South Africa to continue his rehab from the concussion he suffered at the PSL earlier this year. Dane Vilas will continue as his replacement at Northern Superchargers for the remainder of the competition.

Oval Invincibles kept themselves in the hunt in The Hundred by holding their nerve to beat local rivals London Spirit by two wickets and go second in the men's table.

The Invincibles were 52-4 chasing 147, their hopes of progressing fading, but a nerveless Laurie Evans steered his side to victory with five balls left.

In a tense finish the hosts needed six from six balls with two wickets left but Evans launched a six into a jubilant crowd at The Kia Oval.

Evans, a local fan favourite, finished 67 not out from 37 balls, rescuing his side's top order.

The Spirit, already eliminated from the competition, looked like the could spoil the Invincibles' chances at various points, including when England captain Eoin Morgan top scored with 41 in their 146-7.

Invincibles are now a point behind leaders Birmingham Phoenix in the table and level with third-placed Southern Brave, who they play in a huge game on Monday.

The top finishers go automatically through to the final, with second and third meeting in the eliminator.

FIXTURES
Trent Rockets v Manchester Originals (Sunday 15 August)
Southern Brave v Oval Invincibles (Monday 16 August)
Northern Superchargers v Birmingham Phoenix (Tuesday 17 August)
Welsh Fire v London Spirit (Wednesday 18 August)

BIRMINGHAM PHOENIX
Victory at Trent Bridge on Friday night secured qualification for Phoenix. All they need to do to guarantee themselves a place in the final is beat Superchargers.

If they fail to do that, then only a rained off match or a tie between Invincibles and Brave will see them top the Group Stage.

OVAL INVINCIBLES AND SOUTHERN BRAVE
It's a potential crunch match at The Ageas Bowl. All eyes first of all will be on Trent Bridge. If Rockets fail to beat Originals, then both sides can progress.

However, if Rockets win, it means only one of Invincibles and Brave can go through. Provided there is a winner in Southampton, that team will qualify.

TRENT ROCKETS
Barring the points being shared from a tie or washout at The Ageas Bowl, Rockets have their fate in their own hands. Beat Originals on Sunday and they will move into the top three.

Probably best to do that by a big margin to ensure they have a better net run rate, too.

NORTHERN SUPERCHARGERS
Fate very much not in their hands. The first thing to highlight is that Superchargers have an absurdly good net run rate, at least 0.700 better than any of the three teams directly above them. That could come in very handy.

The problem is that they're relying on other results for it to matter. So, they need Rockets to lose on Sunday. There has to be a winner at Southampton on Monday, leaving one of Invincibles or Brave on nine points and ripe for the taking. And Superchargers then have to win their final match.

ELIMINATED
Manchester Originals, Welsh Fire and London Spirit cannot qualify.

Rashid Khan's brilliance helped Trent Rockets secure their place in the latter stages of the men's Hundred with a seven-wicket win over Manchester Originals.

Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid took three wickets in six balls in a fine display to start an Originals collapse from 70-1 to 135-8 from their 100 balls.

In reply, Rockets lost Alex Hales for 19 and Steven Mullaney for 17 but England batter Dawid Malan hit a steady 52 from 46 balls.

He fell with 12 needed from 10 balls, but Samit Patel's 35 not out steered the Rockets to a relatively comfortably win with five balls to spare at Trent Bridge.

The Rockets go second on 10 points and now cannot finish outside the top three places, with Oval Invincibles and Southern Brave, in third and fourth respectively, playing each other on Monday.

Depending on other results they could still go through to Saturday's final automatically as group winners or compete in the eliminator between second and third.

Rashid stands up for Rockets
Rashid's performance - he finished with 3-16 - showed just why he is one of the best white-ball bowlers in the world.

Manchester were going well when he came into the attack after 40 balls, but the 22-year-old removed Phil Salt with his first delivery and saw off Colin Ackermann and Carlos Brathwaite soon after.

Earlier in the day, the Rockets' women faltered in a must-win scenario but Rashid, the first pick in the original Hundred draft back in 2019, grabbed the game and swung it completely in his side's favour.

As ever, he bowled his fizzing leg-spin, confusing batters by turning the ball in both directions.

There were 11 dot balls - balls when the batter failed to score - in his 20 deliveries, while he also took two good catches.

"Outstanding," said former England batter Lydia Greenway. "You can understand why he was the first pick of competition. He is a real game-changer."

If Brave and Invincibles tie their match on Monday - or it ends without a result - they will join Rockets on 10 points, but given Rockets have a superior net run-rate to the Brave they cannot be overtaken in those circumstances when net run-rate stays the same.

Parkinson impresses again

It was a good night for leg-spinners with England's Matt Parkinson also standing out despite finishing on the losing side.

He removed both Hales and Mullaney, finding turn and deceiving both with the flight of his deliveries through the air.

In a below-par Manchester side Parkinson has had an impressive tournament - he ends with nine wickets from six matches - to continue an excellent summer.

Having impressed on England duty before The Hundred he will now return to Lancashire for next week's Twenty20 Blast quarter-final against Somerset.

Should his form carry on into the four-day game he could also have a winter in Australia to look forward to, with England in the Ashes series.

Southern Brave held their nerve to qualify for the latter stages of the men's Hundred and eliminate the Oval Invincibles with an enthralling six-wicket victory at The Ageas Bowl.

Chasing a tricky 135 in a must-win game, the hosts were wobbling on 68-4, but Colin de Grandhomme and Alex Davies both hit 40 not out, with the latter hitting a six to secure victory with five balls to spare.

Brave move to the top of the table on 11 points but they are not yet guaranteed a place in Saturday's final at Lord's, with Birmingham Phoenix able to surpass them should they beat Northern Superchargers on Tuesday.

However, the final three teams have now been decided, with Trent Rockets now set to meet either Brave or Phoenix in Friday's eliminator at The Kia Oval.

After a collapse that saw them lose six wickets for just 33 runs, the visitors needed Alex Blake's fine 44 off 28 balls to post a challenging 134-7.

The Invincibles started superbly with the ball and in the field, but lost their discipline late on, as De Grandhomme and Davies' assured partnership of 67 off 42 balls carried the Brave home in front of a raucous home crowd.

Individual Stats of The players in the Hundred should not be counted in their t20 stats.

Liam Livingstone's devastating hitting powered Birmingham Phoenix straight into the men's Hundred final with a crushing eight-wicket win over Northern Superchargers at Headingley.

At one stage Livingstone seemed to be in his own six-hitting contest as he smashed the highest score of the tournament so far - 92 not out from just 40 balls.

In a match televised live on BBC Two, Livingstone hit an incredible 10 sixes as his side raced to victory with a massive 26 balls remaining.

The Phoenix had earlier quietened the raucous Leeds crowd by fighting back with spin and Adam Milne's near-perfect closing spell to turn Superchargers' 82-0 after 40 balls into 143-8.

Livingstone himself took 3-25 in a stunning all-round performance.

Birmingham are now guaranteed to take top spot in the men's Hundred table meaning they go directly into Saturday's final.

Southern Brave and Trent Rockets will meet in Friday's eliminator.

Moeen Ali and Craig Overton will be available to take part in the closing stages of The Hundred. Overton will join up with the Southern Brave men’s side ahead of their Eliminator match against Trent Rockets at the Kia Oval on Friday while Ali will be part of the Birmingham Phoenix squad who are looking to win the first edition of the men’s competition at Lord’s on Saturday.

In addition, Finn Allen and Colin de Grandhomme are both heading to Bangladesh for international duty with New Zealand. Birmingham Phoenix have called up David Bedingham from Durham as their replacement for Allen while Southern Brave will call on the services of Tim David. Bedingham will play for Durham in the Royal London Cup Final tomorrow before joining up with the squad on Friday.

The final group match in the Hundred is underway. Although there isn't anything to play for, both team will be hoping to avoid the loss and avoid finishing last.

Welsh Fire win the toss and will bowl first.

Welsh Fire ended their men's Hundred campaign on a high by beating London Spirit in Cardiff in a gripping final game of the group stages.

Glenn Phillips hit a blistering 80 off 35 balls as Fire chased down an imposing 164 with two balls to spare.

In a battle of the two lowest-placed teams in the competition, Josh Inglis had earlier smashed 72 off 45 balls for Spirit.

Welsh Fire got off to the worst possible start, falling to 2-2 and then 20-3 before Phillips' fireworks.

The New Zealander at one stage looked well set to become the first player to score a hundred in The Hundred.

Needing seven runs from the final five deliveries, Qais Ahmad hit consecutive boundaries to see his side home.

Eoin Morgan's Spirit end the tournament bottom of the group stage with just one win from eight matches, with Welsh Fire one place above in seventh.

Men's Eliminator - Southern Brave v Trent Rockets

Southern Brave

Group stage: 2nd (5 wins, 2 defeats, 1 no result)
Top run-scorer: Quinton de Kock (189 runs)
Top wicket-taker: Jake Lintott (10 wickets)

Why they will win the Eliminator: Much like Birmingham Phoenix's women's teams, Southern Brave men come into the Eliminator in red-hot form. Defeats in their first two games - including to Friday's opponents Rockets in their opening fixture - seem a long time ago now, with James Vince's side since reeling off five wins in a row, two before and three after their clash with Manchester Originals fell victim to the rain. De Kock and Vince have been reliable contributors with the bat, as has Alex Davies, while the bowling attack is headed in the pace department by Chris Jordan and Tymal Mills. They might not have taken oodles of wickets - Jordan has seven and Mills four - but their death bowling has been extremely good, so even if the batsmen misfire, Brave will fancy their chances. A word, too, on left-arm wrist-spinner Jake Lintott, whose rise from teacher to key cricketer has continued with 10 wickets - after being selected as a wildcard pick.

Why they won't win the Eliminator: It's hard to think of too many negatives as far as Brave are concerned but here goes… Rockets probably do have more spin depth with Samit Patel and Mat Carter supporting Rashid Khan, while you never know if there will be any scars left over from that opening game of the tournament against Rockets when Vince's side were rocked by Marchant de Lange's five-wicket haul. Also, the team's victories have primarily come in Southampton, so can they adapt to a different ground? Brave will also be missing New Zealand's Colin de Grandhomme due to international commitments but, aside from his score of 40 against Invincibles last time out, he has not really set the tournament alight and replacement Tim David has been in great form for Surrey in the Royal London Cup with two hundreds and a fifty across his last four knocks.

Trent Rockets

Group stage: 3rd (5 wins, 3 defeats)
Top run-scorer: Dawid Malan (200 runs)
Top wicket-taker: Rashid Khan (12 wickets)

Why they will win the Eliminator: Rashid Khan. The current situation in Afghanistan is no doubt on the spinner's mind and Rockets captain Lewis Gregory has said Rashid is not his usual bubbly self but the bowler is still delivering time and time again on the pitch. Twelve wickets in the tournament, a tally only matched by Northern Superchargers' Adil Rashid, with a trio of three-wicket hauls, including one against Invincibles last time out. He gets batsmen out and he does not go for many runs. Brave will have to be at their best to combat him. This is a Rockets team with quality all the way down, though - Dawid Malan, Alex Hales, Samit Patel, Gregory, De Lange, Carter, D'Arcy Short. They were seen as many people's favourites before a ball was bowled in the competition for a reason.

Why they won't win the Eliminator: Their form. It was hot to start with as they won their first three games but it is now just two victories in five for Gregory's men. If they shade Brave in the spin department, then they are definitely shaded when it comes to seam, despite the presence of De Lange. Luke Wood impressed earlier in the tournament but was then ruled out for the rest of it through injury and the Rockets' pace reserves do look short. Plus, their batting hasn't been as consistent as coach Andy Flower would like. Rockets have quality, wily cricketers in their ranks - including the magician Rashid - but Brave have the momentum and seem the likelier side to secure a Saturday showdown with Phoenix.

Southern Brave thrashed Trent Rockets by seven wickets in the men's Hundred eliminator to set up a final against Birmingham Phoenix at Lord's on Saturday.

In a faultless bowling performance, the Brave's fearsome attack bowled the Rockets out for 96 in just 91 balls.

George Garton removed the Rockets' formidable top three while Tymal Mills also took three wickets and Chris Jordan and Craig Overton two apiece.

That total was never going to be enough and Brave romped to victory with 32 balls to spare even with the early loss of Quinton de Kock for six.

The Brave are now on a six-match winning streak and go into the final.

Supposed to rain all day tomorrow, I'm guessing the reserve day is Sunday? Hope they call it early so I can avoid going to watch the rain in the unlikely event of play.

Supposed to rain all day tomorrow, I'm guessing the reserve day is Sunday? Hope they call it early so I can avoid going to watch the rain in the unlikely event of play.

From ECB

There is rain forecast tomorrow and with the double-header schedule for The Hundred finals, we understand there will be queries as to how we will manage the games if rain does fall.

Various permutations are possible, depending on how the weather plays out, but we are seeking to follow these principles when making decisions:

• Our goal is to deliver the best possible experience for fans.
• We will maximise the available time for cricket using the most up-to-date weather forecast we available have at the time.
• We will seek, where possible, to achieve equal game lengths for both games.
• We will aim to achieve results in both games tomorrow.

If we need to move any play to the reserve day on Sunday, the same principles will apply. A scheduled start time of 11am will be the earliest play could begin (official start time TBC).

Hope they provide refunds if moved to Sunday as I can't make it! Sunday though looks dry all day so would make sense to move it rather than waste everyone's time tomorrow, unless the forecast suddenly improves, which does happen here.

went to my first hundred game, key takeaways

1. timekeeping makes such a difference, its so good to know exactly how long a game might take to help plan things around that.

2. the format still feels like an exhibition match, maybe its not me getting used to balls instead of overs.

3. atmosphere was really good, when the game got boring lots of crowd fun going on.

ill pbly go to a game or two again next year too.

The Hundred: Oval Invincibles, Southern Brave & Birmingham Phoenix set for Lord's final

The Hundred Final

Venue: Lord's, London Date: Saturday, 21 August Time: 15:00 BST (women's), 18:30 BST (men's)
Coverage: Both matches live on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and online. Radio commentary of both matches, plus live text, clips and analysis on BBC Sport website

After 31 days and 66 games The Hundred reaches its finale on Saturday at Lord's - the historic home of cricket.

Four teams - two men's and two women's - meet in two finals, each bidding to be crowned the first champions of The Hundred.

Weather permitting (more on that later), favourites Southern Brave meet Oval Invincibles in the women's final at 15:00 BST, followed by an eye-catching men's final between the Brave and Birmingham Phoenix at 18:30.

Both games are live on BBC Two, BBC iPlayer and the BBC Sport website from 14:30 on a bumper day of cricket on the BBC.

"The first 100-ball final, to be there is very special," said Southern Brave bowler George Garton, the Match Hero in his side's win in Friday's eliminator.

"The crowds, atmosphere and everything around the Hundred, it is probably the one of the most anticipated white ball game for a while - definitely since the [men's] World Cup final [in 2019]."

Van Niekerk's Invincibles v Wyatt, Dunkley & the Edwards effect
The Invincibles reached the final with a thrilling comeback win against Birmingham Phoenix in the eliminator on Friday.

Their run has been led by their supreme captain Dane van Niekerk while they also have the leading wicket-taker in Tash Farrant and the exciting 17-year-old all-rounder Alice Capsey.

The new tournament has been much-debated but the final, at a sold out Lord's, comes at the end of a month which has showcased the domestic women's game in the UK like never before.

"I know the atmosphere is going to be electric," Farrant said. "It is going to be a landmark game but this whole tournament has been."

In comparison to the Invincbles, the Brave have had their feet up, having qualified directly for the final as group-stage winners.

They dominated the group stage, winning seven of eight games, and beat the Invincibles comprehensively when the sides met on Monday - the Brave's last fixture.

Their success has been built around a feared top order of Danni Wyatt, Smriti Mandhana and Sophia Dunkley - although India international Mandhana has now left the competition - and the skill of Anya Shrubsole, 20-year-old Lauren Bell and Amanda-Jade Wellington with the ball.

The Brave are also coached by England legend Charlotte Edwards who is looking to add the first Hundred title to her haul being the winning captain in the first Kia Super League and the first coach to win the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy.

Birmingham Phoenix topped the group but the Brave have won six matches in a row since losing their opening two games, including a thumping win against Trent Rockets in Friday's eliminator.

Phoenix captain and all-rounder Moeen Ali has returned from England duty to play while Liam Livingstone is one of the form batters in the country. He hit an incredible 92 not out from 40 balls with 10 sixes in his last innings on Tuesday.

The Brave have a formidable bowling attack, however. England internationals Chris Jordan, Craig Overton, Tymal Mills and Danny Briggs are joined by the spin of Jake Lintott.

"The way Livi [Livingstone] played in their last game showed how destructive he can be his wicket will be crucial early on," Garton said.

"Mo has shown how good he is for a number of years. He is one of the best strikers in the world. We will have our plans and hopefully they come off."

The Brave side will also feature their captain, England's James Vince, and South Africa international Quinton de Kock. The Phoenix squad has a number of lesser-known names such as Will Smeed - an in-from, destructive opener and the youngest player in the men's competition.

"You play franchise cricket to get through to finals," Livingstone said.

"We have a lot of young lads and for them it is going to be their first final. It is all about enjoying the experience. These days don't come around too often."

What if the weather intervenes?

But one thing that could scupper the finale is the weather, with rain forecast for much of Saturday in London.

There is a reserve day in place (Sunday) but organisers want to achieve results on Saturday if possible, even if it means the games have to be shortened.

The shortest possible match is 25 balls per side.

Ideally, organisers also want to have finals of equal length, if possible, meaning they see two shortened games preferable to one wash-out and one 100-ball per side match.

Southern Brave were crowned the first men's Hundred champions after beating Birmingham Phoenix by 32 runs in an action-packed Lord's final.

Chasing 169, Phoenix's Liam Livingstone thrashed 46 from 19 balls, animating a raucous Lord's crowd with an effortless flow of boundaries, before the game swung in dramatic and unlikely fashion.

Tim David, only brought into the Brave's squad earlier this week, ran out Livingstone with a 60m direct hit from the deep - the in-form Livingstone agonisingly inches short.

Birmingham still needed another 99 from 55 balls and Brave's impressive bowling attack closed out the game expertly to make the winning margin far greater than looked likely at one stage.

Teacher-turned-Hundred star Jake Lintott had Moeen Ali caught for 36 from 30 balls.

Ireland international Paul Stirling earlier hit 61 from 36 balls for the Brave before Ross Whiteley's crucial 44 not out from 19 balls lifted them to 168-5.

Brave's women, beaten in the women's final by Oval Invincibles, applauded their counterparts from the field at the end of a special day at cricket's historic home.
