Kohli continues surge towards top with career-best third rank in Tests

India captain Virat Kohli has moved up to a career-best third spot in the latest ICC Player Rankings for Test Batsmen after coming up with a useful contribution in his team’s eight-wicket win over England in the third Test in Mohali that helped take a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.

The 28-year-old Kohli scored 62 and six not out to move to 833 points, within 14 points of England’s Joe Root in a list led by Australia captain Steve Smith. Starting the series in 15th position, Kohli has risen at a fast pace scoring 405 runs in the three Tests against England.

Kohli, who is top-ranked in Twenty20 internationals and second in One-Day Internationals, looks determined to top the table in Tests, the only format in which he has never been top-ranked. The remaining two Tests provide more opportunity to Kohli, who had led India to victory in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in Malaysia in 2008.

Bairstow, Khawaja and Cook also attain career-best rankings among batsmen

England’s Jonny Bairstow has also reached a career-best ranking of ninth as he has shot up three places with knocks of 89 and 15 while Australia opener Usman Khawaja has moved up nine places to 19th rank after a match-winning knock of 145 that helped Australia win the day-night final Test against South Africa in Adelaide by seven wickets after losing the opening two Tests.

For South Africa, Faf du Plessis’s innings of 118 not out and 12 have helped him move up eight positions to 23rd rank while opener Stephen Cook has moved up 30 places to a career-best 44th position after scoring 40 and 104 in Adelaide.

Ross Taylor has moved up four places to take the 18th slot after scores of 37 and 102 not out in New Zealand’s 138 runs victory over Pakistan in Hamilton. New Zealand’s 2-0 win in the two-match series saw Pakistan slipping from second to fourth position in the ICC Test Team Rankings.

Hazlewood, Shami, Stokes and Abbott attain personal bests in bowlers’ rankings

In the MRF Tyres ICC Player Rankings for Test Bowlers, Australia pace bowler Josh Hazlewood has moved into the top five for the first time after taking six wickets in Adelaide. He has moved up four places to take fifth position.

Three other pace bowlers have also attained career-best rankings. India’s Mohammad Shami has moved up two places to take 19th position, England’s Ben Stokes has advanced four places to take 21st place while South Africa’s Kyle Abbott has gained seven places to reach 29th slot.

Meanwhile, in the list of all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja has gained two slots to reach a career-best fourth slot after scoring a crucial 90 in his only innings in Mohali. His spin partner Ravichandran Ashwin has consolidated his position at the top with 493 points, a tally not reached by anyone since retired South Africa player Jacques Kallis in 2008.

Kohli approaching the number 1 ranking while Kane is sliding down the rankings.

Kohli in the top 3 of all formats...what a player!

Ashwin the #1 Allrounder AND #1 bowler. We are blessed to have players of such calibre...long may it continue..#BleedBlue

Indian bowlers overtaking Pakistani ones as well! Who would have thought?!!!

Neil Wagner. You legend.

One of my favorite bowlers at the moment. A workhorse who is highly underrated. Here's wishing him well.

Shami (19), Ishant (25) ahead of Wahab (27) and Rahat (32). India's pace attack is certainly improving.

Kapil dev's best was 433 inspite of being India's best all rounder even Brian Mcmillan had 449  sad to know.None among recent ones will reach 600.

Also Chris Cairns highest was 500 one of the few to get that and Richard Hadlee 483(again higher than Kapil).

Cairns was equally good in batting and bowling. Hadlee was much better bowler than Kapil and his rating is mainly driven by bowling.

Kohli rising up BIG TIME.

My God...Sobers, Botham and Kallis.....

Honestly don't think Ashwin has it in him to go past 650. You need genuine peaks with both bat and ball to achieve that stuff.

The Aus home series is his best chance to go for it....or else it will be super hard for a spinner to rise up with overseas tours coming in (SA, Eng and Aus).

If he misses touching 600 now, I think he may have to wait for a few years to have a crack at it again (during home tours).

Amazing quality really by the top ARs of the past era. Wow...

Kallis gets lots of stick, but he contributed with bowling more often than IK contributed with his batting. Difference was that Kallis did it at the same time. It resulted in higher all rounder rating for Kallis. We can't make the case here that Kallis is helped due to his batting because IK was gun bowler as well.

Anyway, genuine all rounders doing great with bat and ball at same time are rare. If Ashwin can keep doing it for another 2-3 years, he may get into the same territory. It's not easy to do well on both at the same time for an extended period. That's why so few all rounders with 600+ rating.

Kapil never did justice to his batting talent. He would play one amazing innings and then go missing for ages. He played all sorts of idiotic shots to get out. He was even dropped once for playing an irresponsible shot - the only Test match that he missed in his career.

Yeah heard of that test match but that was the most stupidest reason ever no offense to management. His batting style probably was more ODI suited I guess.

But you hear many past players like IK, Botham, Hadlee say that Kapil had a lot of untapped talent as a Batsman, but the lack of any HALF DECENT pacer for India meant that he had to lessen his focus on batting and keep bowling those really long spells, especially in Indian conditions.

In the top A/R ratings, looks like batting all rounders stand to gain the most ratings. Kallis and Sobers were better bats than bowler.

Does anyone have an idea as to how the rating works out?

No, it's not true. Both skills have equal weight.

-----------------

How do you rate all-rounders?

We have devised an all-rounder index that gives a good indication of who the best all-rounders in the world are in Test and One Day cricket. To obtain the index, simply take the player's batting and bowling points, multiply them together and divide by 1000. So a player with 800 batting and 0 bowling gets an index of zero (because he can't bowl and therefore isn't an all-rounder!), 600 batting/200 bowling gets 120, and 400 batting/400 bowling points gets an index of 160. An index of 300 plus is world class. There are far more all-rounders in ODIs than Tests, but the same names tend to appear high in both lists. Incidentally, this index does omit one important all-rounder skill, namely fielding. There is no satisfactory way of rating fielding skills statistically at present.

http://www.icc-cricket.com/player-rankings/faqs

---------------

There is no bias for batsman or bowler here when calculating the rating points. It doesn't account for fielding , but you can keep it as additional factor without putting it in ratings. Kallis and Sobers were gun fielder anyway.

He has been phenomenal this tour.. Changed my perception of him being dead rubber specialist.

There was never any doubt in my mind that virat would be a top test player. Finally showing it with scores now though

He brings a lot of energy and x-factor to the team.. Rare for a guy of his speed to be fond of bowling consistently short

Fantastic player. Have to respect his commitment, dedication and hard work. Took a lot of that to get to where he is.

Infact I am going to change my avatar right now to Neil Wagner. I am not a big fan of changing avatar but Wagner has my respect.

Kohli has hardly been a dead rubber specialist (maybe in the Ind SA series). His problem has always been his lack of consistency. One or two 100+ scores followed by some <50 scores. Only recently he has started to become more consistent.

Don't need ICC rankings to see that Kohli or any other player is brilliant.

Just have a look at top 10 and their current form:

S.P.D. Smith - Not so much in good form
J.E. Root -Going great
V. Kohli - Going great
K.S. Williamson - Not so much in good form
H.M. Amla - Out of form
A.B. de Villiers -Out of form+injury
D.A. Warner-Out of form
C.A. Pujara - Going Great
J.M. Bairstow - Going Great
Younus Khan - Terrible series recently

Only 4 of the top 10 as per ICC Rankings are going great and are in very good form.
