India vs Afghanistan Test: Captain Asghar Stanikzai Plays Down Virat Kohli's Absence

Afghanistan will make history on June 14 when they face India in Bengaluru to take their place as only the the 12th Test nation. The one-off Test between India vs Afghanistan will cap one of the great sporting fairy tales after players from the war-torn nation rose from refugee camps to join cricket's elite. However, India skipper Virat Kohli will be absent from the historic Test, having opted for a county stint with Surrey to prepare for India's all-important tour of England. Not wanting to delve too much into the matter, Afghanistan captain Asghar Stanikzai played down Indian skipper's absence saying that Team India has other players that play at the level of Kohli.

"All Indian players are good and everyone is (a similar standard to) Virat Kohli. I believe we are playing with Team India and not with Virat Kohli," said Stanikzai.

Even without Kohli, Afghanistan seems unlikely to trouble the world's number one Test side but Stanikzai says the conditions will suit his team.

"Indian conditions are good for spin and we are lucky to have good spinners," said Stanikzai.

"Our batsmen are in good form. In the last three or four years our team combination is good. We will try and play good and positive cricket.

"Winning and losing does not matter."

Not just cricketing history beckons for the country's cricket stars but it will be a matter of bringing happiness to a nation torn and pounded by decades of conflict.

As Islamist attacks regularly shake their homeland, Stanikzai said his team are suffering too -- but are also motivated to give the country something to cheer.

"It is very difficult. We get very sad when we hear about attacks in our country," Stanikzai told AFP at the team's training base near Delhi.

"But we don't lose our morale, we will try even more to win because the whole nation will be waiting for us to win, the whole nation will be very happy when we win."

Stanikzai, 30, added with a smile: "Our wins give energy to the Afghan nation. We will try to change their sorrow to happiness."

Afghanistan secured their prestigious Test status last year along with Ireland, who are playing their debut five-day match against Pakistan in Dublin.

Since gaining ODI status in 2009 the Afghans have made giant strides, reaching the 50-over World Cup for the first time in 2015.

It was no flash in the pan: Afghanistan also qualified for next year's World Cup by topping the 10-team qualifying tournament in Zimbabwe, beating West Indies in the final.

From refugees to world-beaters

After a generation of Afghans learned cricket in refugee camps in Pakistan, the game has quickly taken hold, and domestic competitions include a popular T20 tournament which began in 2013.

Afghan cricketers are also becoming world-beaters, with prolific teenage spinner Rashid Khan now one of the sport's hottest properties.

In March, the 19-year-old became the fastest bowler to reach 100 one-day international wickets, and he is currently the world's top-ranked bowler in T20 internationals.

Khan, one of a handful of Afghan players in IPL 2018, has been one of the competition's best bowlers with 13 wickets after SunRisers Hyderabad snapped him up for USD 1.41 million.

But Stanikzai said that as well as Khan and Mujeeb Ur Rahman, who is also impressing in the IPL, Afghanistan has even more talented spinners waiting to emerge.

"Rashid and Mujeeb have been performing really well and it is a proud moment for us. But we also have better spinners in Afghanistan," said Stanikzai.

"We have a lot of good spinners in Afghanistan, like Qais Ahmad and other spinners who will do better than Rashid," he added.

Virat Kohli to Miss Short County Stint With Surrey Due to Injury: Report

https://www.news18.com/cricketnext/...with-surrey-due-to-injury-report-1758169.html

After the much discussed move to play county cricket with Surrey before the tough England Test series, Indian captain Virat Kohli, is not going to turn out for Surrey at the Oval after he has been diagnosed with a slipped disc.

Speaking to Cricketnext, a senior BCCI official confirmed the development, "Yes it is unfortunately true and thankfully it has been diagnosed in time and Kohli won’t need a surgery. Hopefully the rest ahead of the England series, now that he won’t be playing all the county games he was set to play, will help him recover in time for national duty."

Earlier, it was reported by the Mumbai Mirror that Kohli’s problem has been diagnosed by one of the best orthopaedic surgeons in Mumbai, who also warned the 29-year-old that he risks missing the England tour if he plays county cricket in June as it will aggravate his injury and has advised him rest. The doctor’s identity was not disclosed in the report.

Kohli visited the doctor on Wednesday and was informed about the details of the damage to his spinal nerve, which though is not in a state that requires surgery.

Kohli had missed one of the ODI games during the recent tour of South Africa at the beginning of the year due to a neck strain.

The Indian captain had previously had a tough time in England, and made success on this tour a personal mission. It is with that idea in his mind, that he chose to play county cricket to get used to the different conditions before the start of the Test series. Kohli had in fact signed up with Surrey for the month of June and all set to skip the historic first Test match against Afghanistan which is in June.

The report also points out that Kohli has informed Surrey about his situation, but the club spokesperson claimed they are unaware of the situation and an official statement regarding the same is yet to be made.

A slipped disc and fatigue? The 97,813 games in the IPL might have had something to do with it.

But not to worry - pretty sure he'll be fit for IPL 2019 - bigger and better!

Yep slipped discs (and back issues in general) don’t happen overnight. He must have known he had back issues throughout the IPL yet still continued to play in it.

Part and parcel of today's busy cricketers life.

Well there goes our chances of winning he series in England.. Was our best chance to win against england and our best bet won’t have enough match practice before the series..
Sigh maybe next time.

Forget match practice, I'm worried whether he'll be fit for the England tour.

Thank you IPL. This is what I was saying for all these years. Apr-May should be the rest period for our superstars but no they have to play in Pyjama League and get injured.

Aur lo maza IPL ka.

Test series in England is nothing in front of IPL 2019 hopefully he will be fit before IPL 2019. Atleast that's what some of our fellow pyjama league fans think.

India captain Virat Kohli's eagerly-anticipated stint with Surrey will not go ahead due to a neck injury.

Kohli, cricket's biggest global star, was due to play for the Brown Caps throughout the month of June in what would have been his first ever overseas contract.

But the Board of Control for Cricket in India has announced he is no longer available after suffering the neck problem in an Indian Premier League match last week.

Kohli's arrival at the Kia Oval was set to create a flurry of interest in the domestic game - and doubtless generate considerable revenue for Surrey - as well as helping the 29-year-old prepare for India's tour of England later this summer.

He is still expected to be fit for that, as well as two Twenty20s in Ireland on June 27 and 29,

A BCCI statement read: "Team India Captain Mr Virat Kohli suffered a neck injury while fielding during Match 51 of the VIVO IPL between Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad on 17th May 2018 at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru.

"Mr Kohli, who was scheduled to play for Surrey CCC in the month of June, has been ruled out from participating. This decision was taken following assessments by the BCCI Medical team, subsequent scans, and a specialist visit.

"The Team India captain will now undergo a period of rehabilitation under the supervision of the BCCI Medical team.

"He will begin training and subsequently undergo a fitness test at the NCA in Bengaluru from June 15.

"The BCCI Medical Team is confident that Mr Kohli will regain full fitness ahead of India's upcoming tours to Ireland and England."

If he doesn't get fit before England tour and doesn't improve his average there he is going to regret it pretty badly. Nobody will remember his IPL innings.

At least he played through the ipl and that's the only thing which matters.

Not the time to hate on the IPL. Slipped disks are quite painful and can be a serious issue. My father also went through this but Alhamdulillah, it got better.

Hope Kohli heals, gets back on the field and resumes his place as Anderson's bunny.

Sad news! hopefully he recovers in time and improves his average but India lose all the matches.

The India captain hurt his neck during an IPL match and will undergo a period of rehabilitation, said BCCI.
Virat Kohli

Virat Kohli has picked up an injury and will no longer join Surrey for a stint in English county cricket, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed.

The BCCI said in a statement on Thursday 24 May that Kohli suffered a neck injury while fielding in the Indian Premier League (IPL) match between his team Royal Challengers Bangalore and Sunrisers Hyderabad on 17 May in Bengaluru.

He was assessed by the BCCI medical team as well as a specialist, and was advised a period of rehabilitation, the board said.

The India captain is expected to recover in time for India's tour of England and Ireland, which begins with a Twenty20 International in Dublin on 27 June.

"He will begin training and subsequently undergo a fitness test at the NCA in Bengaluru from June 15," the statement added.

Kohli had been set to play for Surrey in English domestic cricket as part of his preparations for a five-Test series later in the summer. He had been keen to acclimatise to English conditions and improve on his average of 13.40 across 10 innings on his only previous Test tour of the country in 2014.

His commitment had meant he would miss out on leading India in Afghanistan’s maiden Test in Bengaluru from 14 June.

Despite picking up the injury in the penultimate game of his IPL campaign, Kohli featured in all matches for his side, who failed to make it past the league stage.

He had an impressive season with the bat for Bangalore, finishing on 530 runs at an average of 48.18 and a strike rate of 139.1, putting him sixth on the list of run-scorers before the final two matches of the tournament.

India travel to England for three T20Is and three ODIs in July before the first Test at Edgbaston on 1 August.

I think he will get fit for England for but he won’t be at his best like he would have been with few county matches and practise matches under his belt.. With county practise before the series for kohli indianhad a pretty strong chance of winning against a demoralised English team but that is now going to be very difficult..

Regarding IPL you are right but let’s face the reality here mate.. IPL is here to stay whatever anyone says doesn’t matter because IPL is big business and a lot of people watch IPL hence a lot of money.. What BCCI needs to do is that it should only play marquee series and not overload a player by arranging series against Sir Lanka every few months.. BCCI is earning big bucks from IPL and it’s thheir job to give players rest by not overloading the calendar..

IMO in future IPL will be 6 months long and the rest 6 months will be reserved for marquee series against England, Australia, SA.. Once at home once away and one year break.. So in 3 years India will play against these 3 sides twice once away and once at home a full series of 5 tests and 5 ODI’s.. This will give players plenty of time to rest and in between BCCI can arrange 2 tests against teams like BD, SL, WI etc where if someone is overloaded can be rested..

With a 6 month long IPL players won’t have to travel every other day as well since the scheduling can be a bit relaxed and players can get few days rest between every matches so that will help them a lot as well.. Teams would obviously be increased to around 14 and foreign player cap can be increased to 5-6 to maintain quality.. after IPL players get 1 month break before test season starts and after test season 1 month break before IPL starts again..

I know you are against IPL brother but we need to accept the reality majority of people from the current generation prefer T20 over tests.. One can call them fake fans or what not but end of the day crowd and viewers bring in money and if public is moving towards T20 then that is how it is.. Cable television is not a luxury like it used to be in 90’s and with ease of access of cable TV people have less attention span and would rather watch a movie or some other sport than watch 5 days of cricket.. Options have become 10 times more and the life has become very fast paced so test cricket has lost its appeal to the masses..

The above 6 month split would help everyone and the test cricket will still be relevant.. Problem here is how will other leagues feature in 6 month IPL and I believe the 6 months should have all leagues.. Maybe BCCI can make a deal with ACB and ECB to have 2 teams from Australia and England compete in IPL And make it more of a global league.. That is upto them to figure out how they wanna run it..

Why are you being so generous? There is no need to any kind of international cricket. Let's have 2 ipl seasons per year, each lasting 6 months each. After all, ipl is the highest quality of any sport played in the history of human existence.

Should be a lesson for all. Meaningless T20 leagues should be curtailed and priority should be given to Test and international cricket. Since all the money is in Indian cricket I am sure sponsors will pay 10x as much for Indian Test fixtures as they do for IPL. IPL is diluted with lots of non-Indian players.

Isnt that what matters for Indian cricket fans? After all, it makes their board big money - apparently what they only care about if we go by the internet posters. Money and not cricket.

This attitude will not change anything my friend.. Fact is slowly the young generation in India atleast is moving away from test cricket and going into T20’s or other sports.. Sports are played for the fans and if majority fans want T20 cricket over tests in next 50 years then that is what the administrators will do.. Its simple economics demand and supply.. Market forces determine the product..

You can feel bitter about it or accept the change it’s your choice.. Answer this honestly when was the last time you watched an entire test match ball to ball for 5 days? So let’s stop with the meaningless sarcasm and enjoy whatever cricket we are seeing..

You can damage your back at any given moment but you're probably right this is an on going issue which has become worse.

The problem is once you have this serious back issue, it can re-occur at any given moment when doing anything physical.

Sure there is money in the IPL but if you want to be at your best, you have a rest instead of playing some domestic T20 league.

If I was England, I would be looking for bowlers such as Wood, Woakes, Stokes and Broad to pepper him with bouncers , at least 1 an over.

Terrible news, hope he is able to make a recovery in time for the England series. There will be plenty of opportunities to get acclimatised to the conditions before the Tests begin

The Indian cricket team is all set to embark on the tour to England and Ireland for its next assignment. India are scheduled to play two T20Is against Ireland on June 27 and June 29, following which they square-off against their English counterparts in three T20Is, three ODIs, and five Test matches. The five-match Test series will also provide a rare opportunity for Kohli and his men to eke out a rare series win and assert their supremacy in the longer format of the game. Ahead of their departure, Kohli asserted that long break after IPL and the decision to forgo his county stint has actually turned out to be a blessing in disguise and helped him rejuvenate for the two-month-long tour.

Ahead of the England tour, the Indian skipper along with coach Ravi Shastri addressed a press conference in New Delhi and said, “Our strategy will be the same as it was during the tour to South Africa, Sri Lanka. The mindset doesn’t change on the basis of one series. We have patience and the focus is on how to win matches.”

“Our endeavour in every series will be the same. We won’t change any strategy because we are playing in any other nation. For us, an opposition is an opponent. Our aim is to strive for consistency,” added Shastri.

Addressing concerns surrounding his fitness, the Indian skipper said, “I am 100 percent fine now and absolutely ready to go. My neck is fine now. I’ve had good practice & played 6-7 sessions in Mumbai. Breaks like these make you fresh mentally. It has made me excited to go back on to the pitch again.”

“In hindsight, not playing county cricket was the best thing to happen at that moment although I wanted to experience the conditions. England is a place where we haven’t played so much, there is a big gap of four years. So I wanted to acclimatize to the damp conditions.”

“But when I look at it now, attempting to get used to conditions with a 90 percent fit body wasn’t a good idea. Glad I missed it. Now I am 110 percent and I would much rather be in this position. I need to be fresh and that was the best thing to happen.”

Talking about the pitch and the conditions, head coach Ravi Shastri on Friday suggested that every game is a home game for the Indian team as they try to read the pitch properly and not the opponents.

“Every series is important. Every game is home game for us because we play the pitch and not the opponent. The boys know they will be rated if they attack the conditions and perform well,” Shastri said at the team’s press conference.

Virat Kohli added that the side is looking forward to traveling and perform in different conditions. “When we were playing the Test series in South Africa, initially people thought we were outplayed but then the third Test happened and it was followed by the limited overs matches. People can’t see the small things but we as a team know how we did. We are a team looking forward to traveling to other countries and perform.”

Meanwhile, Kohli is unruffled by his past record in England and waved off any suggestions of being concerned about it. “People have forgotten the Champions Trophy was also played in England. I was asked what I would when I landed there, and I said I wanted to walk around the streets with a cup of coffee. My thinking is very different,” Kohli was quick to remind.

“This is a team game. It doesn’t matter how I perform or how one player stands out in the whole tour. We, as a team, have to play well. In the upcoming tour of England, our focus will be on how we can perform well as a team,” he further added.

Say what you want about Kohli as a person or even as a cricketer. But you have to admit that his work ethic and obsession with fitness is second to none.

What Kohli is doing as a person is far more than he could do with just cricket alone. As countries become richer they become plagued with obesity as food is no longer scarce. The the average person in US is overweight and a third is literally obese. India would've soon followed the same route in 10 years when most people live in urban areas where fast and junk food is widespread.

People don't realize how much having a fit body can help you. It also helps with mental issues such as depression and improves learning ability + memories. Unlike Indian movie actors, Kohli doesn't use steroids so he is a proper role model.

Just look at us in Pakistan. Obesity is on the rise amongst the urban population. Plenty of processed meat and fast food around..terrible nutrition information..I love this aspect of Kohli. Here's hoping Mickey can continue to revolutionise our fitness regime in Pakistan.

No.The younger generation among the urban population is very fitness conscious,at least here in Karachi.Otherwise the older generations are growing overweight.

There will always be outliers though.

On topic:Kohli is a fitness icon.Wish some of our cricketers follow his diet especially the younger batsmen.
