He has always admired Virat Kohli's batting qualities and Sir Vivian Richards feels that one should not be too critical of the Indian Test captain's on-field aggression as he possesses the "quality" to match his attitude.

"I see nothing wrong in Virat's attitude. He is very different from (MS) Dhoni. I believe if you are showing passion and aggression on the field, you should have the game quality to match that. Virat has the quality. He can give back as good as he gets. I like people who have stomach for a good fight and Virat is one of them," Richards, one of the greatest to have ever played the game, told PTI during an interview.

"Virat brings in a lot of vibrancy and the future of Indian cricket looks bright," he added.

Asked about Kohli's failure in England against the moving delivery and the recent slump in ODIs, the legend dismissed the notion of any kind of technical glitch in his batting.

"He is still a very young man. He is only 26. There is so much more to come from him. Whatever I have seen of Virat, he looks like a young man, who wants to improve his game. When you play international cricket, there will be a few problems here and there. But there are two things you need -- positive attitude and tenacity," the 63-year-old veteran of 121 Tests and 187 ODIs said.

Richards also gave a positive reply to a query whether he was willing to help out the Indian batsmen provided BCCI approaches him.

"Why not? I would be quite happy to help out the young Indian batsmen if their cricket board wants me to help them. I believe I have enormous amount of information and knowledge which could prove beneficial for youngsters. If BCCI wants, I can put my hand up and would like to help talented cricketers," said the Antiguan who had tormented bowlers across the globe during his playing days.
While he is associated with the Caribbean Premier League in his capacity of 'Brand Ambassador', Richards still maintains strictly that the traditional form of the game is paramount for any cricketer who wants to seriously pursue the sport.

In fact, Richards feels the WICB should ensure that top players are available to play Test cricket and allowing them in the IPL should depend on their willingness to play the longer format.

"Test cricket is the ultimate examination for any cricketer. I believe ICC in collaboration with various cricket boards should ensure that Test cricket's position should not be in trouble.

"As far as West Indies cricketers are concerned, I would ideally want the WICB to ensure that all top cricketers are available to play Test cricket subject to which they would be allowed to play in lucrative T20 leagues like Indian Premier League. Playing in IPL is important but it can be used as a platform or an incentive for showing interest in playing Test cricket," said Richards.

The 'King' is happy that the upcoming Caribbean players have got a launchpad like the CPL, in which they can rub shoulders with the cream of international cricketers from across the globe.

"I think for development of any young player, he needs proper exposure and a chance to play alongside and against the best in the world. CPL gives them that opportunity which should only help them improve their game. Interacting with the greats from other countries, mixing with individuals from all walks of life will prepare them for bigger battles," Richards concluded.

I'm a Virat fan but I also feel for Rahane. The guy was best Indian bat in our last over-seas round, yet hardly any expert raves about him or praises him. Its all VK.

I know people like to believe test cricket is the ultimate but clearly until a player has succeeded in the ODI format, they don't get talked about much.

Is it treason if I disagree with the King?
I love Kohli's positive attitude and on field aggression. But at times this aggression goes overboard. And this gives way to internal conflicts in the dressing rooms and problems on the feild. He needs to show that he has matured as a person and captain first

I m afraid he is not the star his fans previously thought him to be

Don't think any cricket is as ballsy as Viv was.

Run out followed by Mike Drop celebration then this inning.

Aggression brings the best out of many players. Kohli is one off them for sure.

‘Kohli continues to be my favourite’, says Viv Richards

“Australians will have to pay a heavy price for the ball tampering controversy. They were found guilty, were caught and there is no way out,” feels the West Indian great Sir Vivian Richards on the current team missing the big names like Steve Smith and David Warner.

Richards was speaking at an interaction on a visit to promote the American University of Anitgua here on Monday.

“This is a great opportunity for India to win the Test series even if they are up against Aussies in the second Test now.

“If they don’t grab it now, I doubt whether they will ever do it again,” he said.

“Remember Indians had some greats like Kapil Devs, Gavaskars playing in Australia but never won a Test series. So, I think my favourite Kohli as captain will lead the team to realise that big dream,” Richards said.

“Oh! He (Kohli) continues to be my favourite. I will pay to watch him in action for sure. He is such a little fellow but always punching above his weight.

“A remarkable cricketer who doesn’t show his cheek, very aggressive. And, he will be capping off wonderful times he has been having if he wins the Test series in Australia,” he felt.

On what makes this Indian team different from the previous ones, Richards felt that they are led by example.

“I remember the days when the poor fellows were timid.

“But, not anymore. If you engage them verbally too, they will give back to you. This comes when you have a strong captain and the juniors just follow you,” he explained.

On sledging, the original Master Blaster felt that nothing wrong with it as long it doesn’t get personal and upsets an individual.

“But, I love confrontations in the true spirit. That’s why a strong captain like Virat is needed,” he said.

You will only see PP geeks with big glasses pick someone like Smith over Kohli because of their Test statistics, but there is a reason why every great of the game is in awe of Kohli.

His stature and presence at the crease is something else. The likes of Smith, Root and Williamson will be largely forgotten after their respective retirements, but Kohli has defined an era and will be remembered forever.

Smith ruined his legacy with his cheating as captain. I question whether he can return as the same batsman again.

Williamson is unfortunate to be playing for a very low profile side which does not get to play much Cricket. He by far always turns up for NZ whenever a crunch career saving knock is needed by him as he did against us in the third test.

Root is just inconsistent. But Kohli does everything right and then makes the most of all the adulation which comes his way as well

You need attitude to back your performances as well. Players like Tendulkar etc., were exceptions, because most of the great players in history were also fierce competitors on the pitch, and had qualities beyond their cricketing skills that made them stood out.

The likes of Smith, Root and Williamson have no star quality. When Kohli is on the field, the spotlight is always on him and there is no bigger star in his presence.

Smith has dented his legacy, but it was never in the same league as Kohli’s to begin with. He is simply too far behind in 2 out of 3 formats and has no aura.

Richards also put Tendulkar over Lara quite comprehensively in a recent interview. He said he likes Lara as a West India but overall if he has to pick one of the two Tendulkar's the one he would pick.

Finally some respite for Kohli, hopefully this gives him the confidence to keep making selection blunders :P

But Naseeruddin Shah is not a fan of Kohli's attitude so I know whose opinion I'm favouring.
