Lahore, 14 September 2017 – Waqar Younis, the former Pakistan captain and head coach, will be Islamabad United's bowling coach for the HBL PSL 2018. This announcement was made today by the franchise management. In addition to his tournament role Waqar has also been appointed the Director Cricket for United.

Waqar, who had previously been the coach of the Pakistan team, will join Islamabad United with his first role in the PSL. Regarding his appointment Ali Naqvi, the owner of Islamabad United, said, "I think in Waqar we have found the ideal man for this role. Not only does he have years of coaching experience with the national team - both as a bowling coach and a head coach - but a lot of his success has been with many of our current players, especially Misbah. The feedback we got from our staff regarding Waqar was as positive as can be, and his status in the sport is without doubt. Furthermore, as a team that believes in numbers, the fact that along with his great numbers with the national team, in his lone IPL season, with the Hyderabad team, his team finished with the best bowling numbers in the tournament provided enough evidence for us to go after him. I am sure this appointment will be a successful one and will lead to further success for Islamabad United."

Waqar has previously been the head coach of Pakistan national team from 2010 to 2012 and from 2014 to 2016. Prior to that he had two successful stints as the bowling coach of the national team too. In addition to this he was the bowling coach of Sunrisers Hyderabad for one season (2013) in the IPL - over the course of which SRH finished with the best economy rate in the IPL.

Regarding the appointment Islamabad United captain, Misbah-ul-Haq said, "For any captain who is a batsman it is advantageous to have a coach who is a great bowler, someone he can trust and who commands respect both with the local players and the foreign players. Having worked with Waqar bhai before I think his appointment is a great one for Islamabad United, and one that will benefit our bowlers and our dressing room greatly."

Waqar echoed those thoughts saying, "Misbah and I relied on and helped each other out in the lowest of times for Pakistan cricket. Having been through the experience we had from 2010 to 2012 is something that will always be with me, so it feels great to be reunited with someone I have worked with so much over the past seven years. When I used to see PSL from the outside, Islamabad United seemed like a family to me & I am thrilled to be a part of it."

"Furthermore I have had talk with Ali Naqvi and I would like to be involved in Islamabad United's efforts at the lowest level too. They have started the Twin Cities Takraa this year and that is something I am passionate about. I believe it is the duty of former players in positions like mine to give back to the country that gave them so much. And I believe that is the core belief behind all the team in the PSL - that beyond everything this is a chance to improve the level of cricket in Pakistan at every stage."

Didn't Waqar when he was forced to resign as coach in 2016 criticized the PCB for pumping so much money into the PSL back then, and didn't he go on a tirade that holding the PSL alone would not help improve Pakistan Cricket by itself but that the PCB should primarily focus on Domestic Cricket and how if someone offered him the right price he would be willing to coach a local domestic team?

And what do we have hear at the first available opportunity Waqar gets to get into a PSL team? He dives right in.

Money talks as always.

And your point is?

In his report Waqar had suggested this:

"Domestic cricket needs to be restructured. Fewer teams to play first-class cricket to improve the standard".

He didn't critcised PSL.Rather he said that we should concentrate on our domestic cricket more.PSL will not all of a sudden produce players of the quality of VK.

Good for Waqar. Islamabad really suffered with the whole fixing issue and with Russel being banned. They should look to rebuild their squad. They have Shadab and some other good players but Sharjeel and Khalid are big losses. Should also drop Irfan completely.

Really bad choice

Islamabad won the first PSL tournament with Wasim in charge. Waqar's track record as coach and captain tells you everything about what happens when he is put in charge of things. A real downer. Horrendous decision.

That's because Wasim Akram had an experience of coaching in IPL working under good coaches but what was Waqar's qualification before he became Pakistan's coach and Misbah and Waqar are the deadly duo which resulted in Pak ranked 8.Pakistani fans should be thankful to Arthur and here some people still seem to hate Arthur

he most certainly didnt go on a 'tirade'

He said that this wont be the solution to the problems and money need to be pumped into FC aswell

But obv that doesnt matter.

yes his coaching record is to take Pak to a WC SF with an average team whereas two world class teams before that got knocked out of the first round

also his record is to take Pakistan to #1 in test rankings

and to top off your ignorance

Dean Jones was in charge. Not Wasim Akram. Wasim wasnt even bowling coach afaik

That was because WC was played in subcontinent and the other teams were not really good against spin and Australia were also getting worse during that phase and everyone remembers how Pak were slaughtered by NZ and then couldn't even chase 260

I like Waqar but as long as Misbah in involved with IU, will not be sporting them. I'm still mad at him for his very selfish last few years with Pakistan team.

Lol also remember how he lambasted the likes of Ramiz, Wasim and co as to why is everyone targetting the Pak coaching position job? The PSL coaching job? Why doesn't anyone want to come and work at the grass roots lol

Said from a man who was Pakistan's Head coach twice, bowling coach once and now PSL Director. Enough said.

Wasim Akram was the team's mentor. He and Dean Jones were a team, the entire team has vouched for this.

Hard choice to choose between Waqar and Misbah but Misbah seems to be the easier to work with compared to the former and is actually much more respected.

He was the captain of one of those two world class teams for the record.

Respect your personal opinion but for me Misbah lost whatever he earned in last 2 years of , particularly his selfish decision to carry on after disaster tour down under at age 43.

Lol

Was hoping he would get maximum limelight being the first Pakistani captain to beat the West Indies in the West Indies in a test series even if it was a very weak West Indies team. But lol he did not factor in the team winning the 2017 CT which stole every bit of limelight away from him.

Wow, he has joined my team. I am also his biggest fan now Slog can I join the club please :))

The seamer's at Islamabad are to benefit immensely, he's the best specialist bowling coach in the world

Contrary to what some think, I don't mind Waqar being a bowling mentor as clearly he has valuable experience to draw upon.

Shouldn't be a head coach or captain though.

Waqar is still a big household name, a cricketing legend, an ICC hall of famer, a former Pakistan coach x 2 times and a former Pakistani captain. Criticizing something as a 'Pakistan coach' is different, he was saying it was 'party time' for most players beacuse they weren't training that much, and if you looked at some current International players for Pak they were in abysmal form in the first PSL, including Malik, Imad Wasim, Babar Azam, Azhar Ali

Savak got anything to say? Slog

Full marks to Dean Jones for not only neutralizing the influence of Waqar but getting something positive out of it as well inspite of the odds.
