Waqar Younis' report after the 2016 World Twenty20

Waqar had good intentions. His ethic towards fitness was commendable but he was poor tactically and also struggled to manage players.

Mickey is a step up in both regards. Waqar didn't get the wheel set at all. He left our LO teams in a shambles.

Actually more I read this report the more I realise that almost for the last ten years waqar has been trying his best to improve Pakistan cricket with recommendations that are now bearing fruit under a different coach. I.e same recommendations different outcomes. It can only mean that waqar managed to dig deep and put up with idiots like afridi, akmal, shehzad, moin Khan and Haroon rashid but the pcb set up has been totally flawed. Now that the older guys have moved on (in the team and as selectors) Mickey has been able to build with the trust of Pcb in exactly the manner recommended by waqar.

Obviously in that time wasim was commentating in IPL and doing all kinds of stunts with others but waqar has been very closely involved with the circus of Pakistan cricket.

Anyone can manage “Allah mian ki gaye” and “jee huzoor” type characters like Azhar, Shafiq etc., but your man-management skills are tested by people like Umar, Shehzad and Afridi, and Waqar failed spectacularly at managing his relationships with them - he took things personally.

Woolmer did not fall out with these players and Arthur has taken things personally either. Umar has thrown a tantrum because of the so-called mistreatment, but I am sure that if Umar works hard and shows dedication, Mickey will be more than happy to have him back in the fold.

Waqar blurred the lines and often took things to a personal level, something that Mickey probably never will, and that is the difference between a professional coach and a egoistic character who got the job purely because of his status as a legend of Pakistan cricket.

I do believe Mickey is a much better coach than Waqar.

I am just saying some of the criticisms are unfair.

Waqar tried to instill a fitness culture but he got major resistance. People even started blaming him for players going through bad bowling/batting forms saying that Waqar is concentrating too much on fitness.

Yet when Mickey does it, he is a great coach.

Mickey is lucky because he has got PSL to help him out in determining performing players (you have said this yourself). Waqar didnt have that.

Mickey has a chief selector that is backing him in picking youngsters and keeping the ttf's out of the team.

When Waqar was coach, the likes of Afridi, Shehzad, and Umar kept getting picked even after discipline issues. I doubt Waqar would want them in the team due to his obvious issues with them. So basically there was a strong lobby against Waqar in not giving him the same backing that Mickey is receiving.

How can you man manage a player that complains of back problems as a protest to his brother not being in the team? That player needs to get dropped and disciplined, not man managed.

If you think I am going off on a conspiracy filled rant, tets not forget, Waqar's reports to the PCB kept getting leaked. This proves beyond a doubt someone at PCB was sabotaging his coaching stint.

Factually incorrect since a few of Shehzad's and Umar's best performances came when Waqar was coach... not to mention Waqar was coach when both of these were inducted as sides as youngsters in 2009 and 2010. They played in 2 world cups when Waqar was coach sandwiched between a world t20. Waqar was the one who played Umar in Tests in Shehzad in ODIs. So Waqar had a right to have a say in the development of these youngsters and how far they came off in 2014-16. When he finally went off against these two in 2016, you can say it was desperation to have seen players remain so static in a career spanning 6-7 years, and he was portrayed as the bad guy for going after him.

I mean its one thing to handle difficult character, its a completely different story to give an interview in the middle of the tournament saying I am being played as a keeper and at no.6 which is affecting my performance (2015), or going upto Imran Khan in the middle of a world cup and being caught on camera complaining that I am not played at no.3. (As if Indians didn't have much to gossip about our cricket team since they landed for the world cup in 2016)

Waqar was pretty lenient since Mickey would've just started a Yo-Yo fitness test and sent him on the first trip home to Pakistan..

I've sympathy for Waqar. It must be hell to work with "professionals" like UA & co.

I don't think I've much patience to endure other people's incompetence.

Reading this, one thinks that what waqar was suggesting is exactly what mickey is doing right now. But it seems waqar back then was not given the autonomy to do as he wished.

Interesting read now that he’s back in the limelight.

Will he get his way this time.

Somebody termed this report the "Vickyleaks".

What a choice of T20 openers we had in 2016. Afridi insisting on Khurram Manzoor while Waqar called for Salman Butt, and this was soon after the selection of 39 year old Rifatullah Mohmand whose reflexes were slow he played his shots after the ball was already in wicketkeeper's gloves.

The Waqar files :waqar

I hope this time PCB gives him more executive powers.

Waqar’s one word report on pretty much everything:

DHOOOKAAAA!

Waqar had no business complaining about the captain to PCB and trying to make decisions which are contrary to what the captain wants

I'm sure Waqar was unhappy when he couldn't treat the team like his own personal fiefdom when he came back as coach.

He was probably right about Afridi but as Head Coach his job is not to undermine the captain .
