Waqar Younis vs Mickey Arthur : Who is the better-suited coach for Pakistan?

Too early to judge. We will truly see Arthur once Misbah and Younis leave and he gets full control of the squad.

Waqar was definitely the better coach when it came to the bowling aspect of our team. The same bowlers in the side under Mickey were much better under Waqar.

Waqar's side would give me no greater hope of victory in England, New Zealand and Australia. If anything, Mickey's side at least seems harmonious behind the scenes (so far) and they seem to be working harder on fitness and fielding. For me, Waqar would have overseen the same losses as Mickey has, but I'm not so sure Waqar would have overseen the victories Pakistan have had in that time given the reported dressing room unrest. Either way I don't think Mickey will take Pakistan much further than what most other coaches would have. Any fresh and disciplined face at the time of Waqar's departure was going to create some rejuvenation in the camp. The team suffers the same problems under the same conditions that every Pakistan team I can remember has struggled in. The only format in which Pakistan have recently looked like a largely improved team in is in Twenty20. We're now just seeing our predictable limitations become exposed in conditions we're not suited to. It's the state of the sport at the moment that every team thrives on particular conditions and gets hammered outside of their ideal conditions. It's not just as simple as home and away. We did well in England when conditions suited our game and crumbled when it didn't. It's the same in New Zealand and now Australia.

Mickey is more proactive and a better judge of talent. This poor showing doesn't have to do much with coaching. Mickey is simply more modern and that's showing in LOIs

It's not a fair comparison - one is a Coach & other one is a mentor. Mickey can work on the fundamentals of the game, WY could have inspired the players, but he is not a strategist, neither a perfectionist.

I think Mickey is just waiting for the end of Misbah, Younis and the end of the Australian tour before he truly starts calling the shots.

No coach can make a difference if the player himself has no talent , no ambition and lacks the aspiration to reach greater heights.

This is no comparison at all. Waqar is not a coach.

he was a great player , that is , full stop.

Mickey has so far had it tough. A tour of England, New Zealand and now Australia. We whitewashed WI in every game barring the final test match maintaining our dominance in the UAE. He definitely hasn't had it easy compared to Waqar.

We 'whitewashed' WI in every game? I didn't know every defeat is now called a 'whitewash'

We lost to a no.8 ranked team in the UAE thanks to Mickey Arthur, things were never this bad under Waqar

Too early to make a final judgement

I'd give him the UAE season next year before making a call

But Mickey has made some mind boggling calls and there has been a clear decline in performance

There is no doubt Mickey is a trouble maker.. his press conferences point to that.. His handling of Asad Shafiq shows he is an impulsive coach who is not willing to give players time... I have never seen this many chopping and changings of a settled unit as I have seen under him

I still remember the flak Waqar received when he indirectly mentioned Shehzad and Akmal as players who were 'complaining' about their batting position during the t20 worldcup and got bashed for it.. that Waqar shouldn't publicly bash his own players..

His opinion on Sarfaraz was not well accepted either... and he was proved right since Sarfaraz has scored his most runs in no.5-6 position post world cup..

Waqar was a better mentor in terms of bowling and probably commanded greater respect but Mickey Arthur is a better coach overall. He has shown greater vision for the future and is definitely a better strategist.

How did Waqar command greater respect? He had zero coaching record and Australia didnt even take him as their bowling coach. Only in Pakistan, we let people coach us who have no coaching qualifications.

Under Waqar's second tenure, our bowling in ODIs in terms of bowling average was the second worst in the world and that's including Associates.

So that's not true.

How about Tests? I feel like he did a great job with Imran and Rahat.
