Anyone watching this? I am in two minds. It's the sort of show I would usually be attracted to, but as a fan of the Spielberg film, I am sort of dreading the BBC version. I know it was originally a British story, but Americans tend to do British stories better.

The Spielberg film was great - it kept some of the element of the novel and changed others. Tom Cruise was excellent.

As for the groundbreaking novel. The screw in the alien ship turning for hours on Horsell Common was really creepy. Thunderchild’s fight with the tripods was thrilling and sad.

It’s watchable. Production/effects don’t seem top tier.

I remember the Spielberg movie very well, only because I had to kill 3 hours in London so ended up at the Odeon Leicester square. My experience was utterly ruined by the puny size cinema screen. Awful experience. Put me off the movie, but may watch it again now!

Will have to take your word on it. Only thing I remember is Dakotas non stop shrieking.

Loved the thrill of it but could not accept the ending , like the most intelligent aliens traveling by lightning couldn’t calculate that earth’s Habitat etc could kill them?

Signs is another movie that I really like that has the same problem

Lol true, that's why district 9, Arrival are much more sensible but not thrilling enough like the other Alien movies.

The only exceptions somewhat I would say are Prometheus,Edge of tomorrow but that's again because a lot was left for imagination and the stories are more from a pov of mercenaries than families which was shown in War of the world,Signs.

Anyone considering giving a try, my suggestion is please don't. A total clown show, I am surprised that BBC picked it up. If you have too much free time plant trees instead and save the planet.

It was that sort of stupidity which made the film a classic in my book. There are tons of space movies, but the simplistic message of aliens coming to zap the bejeezus out of mankind struck a nerve for me. None of your " We come in Peace!" nonsense. They martians were utterly hateful and showed no reason or remorse whatsoever.

I like this series - they way it flashes forward to a time when the Martians have been driven off but have devastated the Earth anyway, turned it into another Mars. A metaphor for environmental collapse.

It was a pretty big hole in HG Wells’ story though. A civilisation that can cross interplanetary space hasn’t developed vaccines.
