It's getting harder and harder in Oz to even get a FC contract if you don't take the "athlete" part seriously. We've had some talented players pushed out (Cosgrove one I can name) because they couldn't get fit.
Huge advantage in facilities and fitness knowledge/coaches being easy/widespread in almost every community though to start from.
Not sure about Australia but the general fitness level and athleticism starts at the school level here in United States. It is VERY WELL organized multi billion dollar industry.
Many, many and many white and other American parents are more focused on their kids sporting activities rather than pushing them to become book worms and become doctors and engineers.
You will notice, groups and groups of middle and high schoolers jogging and running on sidewalks in after school hours and over the weekends.
Ranging anywhere from 10 to 18, they look super fit, agile, lean and strong.
I think the mindset of the parents is that there are lots of safety nets provided by the govt, society and tax money where the kid will make a decent living without worrying about becoming a doctor or an engineer, but to stay fit and healthy is in one’s own hands - health is wealth is the moto.
Go to a beech and compare the physique of many white American male with a desi - and they belly size will tell you the story.
Such mindset does not exist in the third world.
There is hardly any focus on health and fitness in our schools.
It’s all about after school tuitions, and ratta maari, and exam passing to get a job to survive in the tough socio economic conditions.
Some make it, others fail. Some can’t even make it to college.
And many of these school kick outs then become sorta “lofars” and play in streets - some of them, then make it to the national team.
