Was the Indian Test series victory in Australia a fluke?

I'm sick of hearing that India is a more superior test team to Aus. This is simply not true. The Indian team won in Aus, because they were without their best player and had nothing to lose. Traditionally, subcontinental teams play under high pressure and scrutiny in Aus.

But without Kohli, their was no off-field drama and no expectations from the fans. Therefore, allowing the Indian players to play without fear and the Aus players coasted along taking their foot of the accelerator after the first test.

India won't win the next test series in Australia, with Australia having full ammunition and focus this time.

That series was a perfect David vs Goliath story and we won two test matches, Melbourne and Brisbane in that series. So, it's not a fluke.

That series showed the bench strength that we had as a second string team went on to beat the mighty Australians after the 36 all-out humiliation. That win had performances from

Rishabh Pant ( Age - 23)
Shubhman Gill ( Age - 21)
Mohammad Siraj ( Age - 27)
Washington Sundar ( Age - 21)
Shardul Thakur ( Age - 29)
Hanuma Vihari ( Age - 27)

Definitely not a fluke. India won with half of their side being a t20 2nd xi. And tests were played batting last with more difficul conditions. You could say Pant was a bit lucky but that's about it.

This was probably Indias greatest test series win

Who knows. Maybe thakur and siraj are Indias best test bowlers after all.

Just because India do not beat NZ in a match played in England, it in no way logically follows that results of past series played in Australia are invalidated.

India played well, bowled fantastically, batted well enough, were well led & won deservingly. There's not much mystery about it.

Nope, India is a better team compared to Australia, and that series was not a fluke.

India did a lot of planning and preparation to beat the Australians in their own backyard, but I think this planning and preparation is missing on their tours to England.

To me, they don't put the same level of commitment towards a test series in England or New Zealand compared with Australia, and their record in England perhaps let them down in the final.

I am the first to say that this Indian team is hyped, but that victory in Australia was legitimately the greatest series victory I have seen, precisely because a weaker team outright beat a much stronger one at home over a 4-test series. It is the stuff of underdog dreams.

Even if you are a weaker team, you can't fluke two test victories against a full-strength Aussie side. That takes guts, leadership and inspiration.

Having said that, I can also say that if India were playing under Kohli and with a full-strength side, they would have lost that series. Cricket is strange like that.
