Mickey Arthur speaking to the press in Kent today :-

"Yes we are very confident (going into this series); we are a young team"

"We are trying to resurrect our Test side"

"We have some incredible talent in our dressing room"

"England are a really good Test side and in these conditions they are outstanding"

"They arent too many sides thar win away from home and that's how we are challenging ourselves"

"England weren't too bad in the Ashes; they had their opportunities during the series"

"I saw that Stoneman had a decent series and we know Joe Root is world class"

"We are just concentrating on ourselves at the moment"

"Mohammad Amir has trained hard, we have had 4 weeks of tough training in Lahore and he will be here and could feature in the game (against Kent)"

"Mohammad Amir is our number one bowler"

"We back him in tough situations and he generally gets it done for us"

"We need him to get the ball swinging and get his length slightly fuller"

"And if he does that he will ask a lot of questions (of batsmen)"

"The passion and excitement of Pakistanis to see international cricket at home was amazing"

"And for our players to play in front of their people and families was amazing too"

"Hope these tours (to Pakistan) open up doors for international cricket in Pakistan"

About Australia ball tampering controversy

"Yes it was a shock for me"

"I was disappointed to see that go down"

"They push the line but i want to know what that line is"

"This looks like a reality check for world cricket"

"They [Smith/Warner/Bancroft] were really stupid but they played a heavy price for it"

"We know our batsmen have to play lot later and cover off stump"

"We've got a lot of time to adapt here. We've got enough time and I'm pretty sure our guys are good enough to adapt as quick as possible"

"The calendar doesn't really allow it anymore; so for us to be able to come here (early) and get this preparation is amazing"

"Winning away from home now is very tough, not many teams win away from home so the best possible thing is to give ourselves the best preparation time, and hopefully we will be ready when that first Test arrives"

"Shadab is an incredible player, Yasir is also a fantastic player"

"I saw a stat and I think he (Yasir) has taken 78 wickets for us in the last 2 years, he bowls a lot of overs, he has the ability to attack"

"Now Shadab Khan is incredibly exciting"

"We also think that the time we're playing in England, we are not 100% sure that spin is going to be a massive factor so we are covered in the seam department "

"Yasir was a big loss for us but we've got him at the NCA, he is getting stronger, his stress fracture is healing and it is very important for us to have him fit and firing for the Australia and New Zealand series"

"We have had the workload debate (re Mohammad Amir) for a long time now and every team is doing it. We've got only three weeks off in the calendar (till the World Cup) so we'd be silly to arrive here without all our bowlers ready to go"

"We know who those bowlers are and we have identified them; We just need to manage their workload"

"Ultimately, we want the best team available to play in 2019 WC but also it so important for us to win Test matches because we are a young Test match team; We need to get our Test match cricket on track; to do that we need a pool of player who can play at any given time, and I think we have done that"

Regarding mood of the team

"The tour of England is an exciting time and they are a young group of guys so for them to come to England is amazing, the vibrance around our training session was amazing. They're fit and ready to go"

"The selection panel and myself have given these guys a real good opportunity that they get first crack at rebuilding this Test side and I'm pretty sure they'll come to the party"

Practice Match against Kent

"This is really important to us. Kent are a team on the up and they're an exciting side as well and certainly it won't be a walk over match. It's going to be tough and we're going to play with an intensity that we are required to play at an international level"

"We want to keep climbing up the ladder in international cricket. We are pretty focused on ourselves and the goals we've set as a team and hopefully if we tick all those boxes we will climb up the ladder and be a force to be reckoned with pretty soon"

Regarding if Darren Lehmann knew what was going on :-

"I'm not sure, I honestly couldn't tell you what happened there. I'm not a 100% sure of the circumstances of the plan so I can't comment on that"

Arthur seems confident of his team's chance and i believe they have a chance to win against England and Ireland shud be easy

Glad to hear his words on Shadab...He really is our future star. The kid just needs to keep his feet on the ground and keep improving his already amazing skills.

Canterbury: Former Australia coach Mickey Arthur hopes the Australia ball-tampering scandal will prove a "reality check for world cricket" and that the banned trio of Steven Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft get a chance to play county cricket in England.

Smith and Warner, the deposed captain and vice-captain, have been given one-year bans by Cricket Australia, while Bancroft has been hit with a nine-month suspension for his part in the ball-tampering scandal that marred the team's recent tour of South Africa.

Steve Smith has been forced to step down as captain of the Australian team after the controversy. ReutersSteve Smith was forced to step down as Australia captain after the ball-tampering scandal. Reuters
Top-order batsman Bancroft was all set to be Somerset's overseas player this season but the county backed out of that deal after it emerged he had used sandpaper to alter the condition of the ball in Cape Town.

The CA ban applies only to Australia international matches and domestic fixtures, leaving open the possibility that the shamed trio could resume their careers elsewhere before their respective suspensions expire.

Now the coach of Pakistan, who begin their tour of England against Kent later this week, Arthur told reporters at the south-east county's Canterbury headquarters on Wednesday that he had been stunned by the extraordinary scandal.

"It was a shock to me. I was disappointed, really disappointed when I saw it go down," he said.

Arthur, who coached Australia from 2011-2013, added: "Australia always play their cricket really hard, they play it tough. They've pushed 'the line' — I just want to know where 'the line' is because I'm not sure many people do know where that line is and what it is.

"But I think it got to a point where perhaps, hopefully, this is a reality check for world cricket and just makes everybody sit back and take stock.

"Hopefully, something good comes out if it."

'Absolutely gutted'

Arthur was sympathetic to the idea of the banned trio playing county cricket.

"In a way, I feel really sorry for them. I can understand they were really stupid, they've paid a massive price for it and I know Steve Smith, he would be absolutely gutted.

"Cameron Bancroft is a new guy on the block so for him it would be really hard to swallow and Davey (Warner).

"For them to be missing the amount of cricket they are missing is tough on them so if the ECB (England and Wales Cricket Board) allowed it, it would be good for them to keep playing because I think they have paid a big price already."

Arthur's focus, however, is firmly fixed on Pakistan.

They face Kent in a four-day warm-up match starting Saturday ahead of an inaugural Test in Ireland and a two-Test series in England.

Pakistan impressed during a 2-2 drawn series in England two years ago and last year Arthur's men won the Champions Trophy one-day tournament in Britain.

But since that 2016 series, Pakistan have seen the likes of veteran batsmen Misbah-ul-Haq and Younis Khan retire.

England may have suffered a 4-0 Ashes reverse in Australia and a subsequent Test series loss in New Zealand, but Arthur was in no doubt about how tough it would be to face Joe Root's men in early-season English conditions.

"England are a really good side and in these conditions they are outstanding," he said.

"There are not that many sides that win away from home these days, so that's how we are challenging ourselves.

"England in the Ashes, I watched a lot of that, weren't too bad.

"They had opportunities in a lot of the Test matches which they just didn't close off."

Arthur, who made his name coaching his native South Africa, added: "We are under no illusions. It will be a very tough series.

"But we've got a dressing room full of young cricketers who are extremely talented."

Pakistan are set to be bolstered by the late arrival of Mohammad Amir after visa problems delayed the star paceman's entry into Britain until Wednesday.

Good comments from Mickey though a bit generous of his praise for Kent.

They're a pretty average Division 2 team who got bowled out for less than 100 recently. Should be beating them in this upcoming tour match.

Amir is your number one bowler? Hasan should be feeling disrespected.

We have talent. They need experience. Also think Hasan Ali is our number 1 bowler. Disagree with Arthur on Amir being our best bowler.

Mickey Arthur says Pakistan are "under no illusions" how difficult their two-Test series in England will be despite the hosts' trying winter.

Joe Root's side failed to win a Test in Australia or New Zealand, crumbling to a 4-0 defeat in the Ashes and losing 1-0 to New Zealand during a series in which they were bowled out for 58 in Auckland.

However, England have not been beaten in a series at home since Sri Lanka triumphed 1-0 in 2014, with Pakistan one of two sides - New Zealand the other - to limit them to a draw in that time, earning a 2-2 stalemate in 2016.

"England are a really good side and in these conditions they are outstanding," said Pakistan coach Arthur, whose team will play at Lord's from May 24-28 and Headingley from June 1-5, after serving as the opposition for Ireland's maiden Test, at Malahide, from May 11-15.

Abbas aiming to out-fox England
Mohammad Abbas tells Saj Sadiq how he hopes he and Mohammad Amir can blow England's top-order apart...

"We are under no illusions, it will be a tough series. I watched a lot of England in the Ashes and they weren't too bad. They had opportunities in a lot of the Test matches which they just didn't close off.

"There are not that many sides that win away from home these days, so that's how we are challenging ourselves. We've got a dressing room full of young cricketers who are extremely talented.

"We are trying to resurrect our Test side, so let's hope it all goes well for us."

Mickey Arthur on Mohammad Amir

Arthur coached Australia between 2011 and 2013 and admits he was "shocked" by the ball-tampering scandal that engulfed the side on their tour of his native South Africa earlier this year, which resulted in Steve Smith, David Warner and Cameron Bancroft being hit with suspensions.

Bancroft subsequently had his contract as Somerset's overseas player for the 2018 campaign terminated but Arthur feels it "would be good" for the opener, Smith and Warner to play domestic cricket if the ECB permitted it.

"For them to be missing the amount of cricket they are missing is tough on them so if the ECB allowed it, it would be good for them to keep playing," added Arthur, with Surrey coach Michael di Venuto having revealed his county would be open to Smith and Warner playing for them.

"In a way, I feel really sorry for them. I can understand they were really stupid and they've paid a massive price for it.

"I know Steve Smith, he would be absolutely gutted. Cameron Bancroft is a new guy on the block so for him it would be really hard to swallow and Davey [Warner].

"[The ball-tampering] was a shock to me - I was really disappointed, when I saw it go down. Australia always play their cricket really hard, [but] they've pushed 'the line'.

"I just want to know where 'the line' is because I'm not sure many people do know where it is and what it is. Hopefully this is a reality check for world cricket and makes everybody sit back and take stock.

"Hopefully, something good comes out if it."

Yes it shows with the team that you have selected.

4 openers for 3 tests shows how much trust you have in them.

Shadab needs to be kept in check & stop calling him star boy *♂️ We don’t want a chota/selfie situation

Agree with Mickey, the current bunch (led by Haris Sohail) are the best players of fast bowling in the country.

Fakhar won't be opening as he will be in the middle order, this has been clarified various times. Only Azhar, Sami and Imam are selected for opening.

All please stick to the topic. This thread is about Pakistan's tour to Ireland/England and has nothing to do with WC 2019 and who might win it.

Nice to see Mickey encouraging Amir to bowl fuller and giving him confidence by saying he's their number one bowler

Not a test bowler tho.

This statement describes majority of the PP posters.

Guy is 19, has just played one test. His bowling average in 6 first class matches in around 24 (Excluding the test he played) and batting average of 30.

Yes but he is not a test bowler, and cant even develop into one according to some. :rahat1

Messing up the guy is just what they need.

I have heard that before but he has always been playing as an opener and now they're going to throw him down at 6-7 and ask him to do a Gilly which is not possible.

Head coach Mickey Arthur believes Pakistan have enough potential to repeat the heroics of the 2016 series against England.

The Sarfraz Ahmed-led unit will travel to England from Ireland, where they will play two Tests starting from May 24.

The last time Pakistan toured England was under the leadership of Misbahul Haq two years ago as they registered a 2-2 draw in the four-match series to become the number one side in the five-day format.

However, this time around, the team is not the same. Misbah and legendary batsman Younus Khan have both retired from international cricket, while talismanic leg-spinner Yasir Shah is also not with the side because of knee injury.

But Arthur, while addressing media, expressed his views that his team can still reach the same heights as they did on their last visit.

“We are definitely capable of repeating our heroics of 2016,” said Arthur. “We have the likes of Asad Shafiq and Azhar Ali, who scored centuries during that tour at The Oval and Edgbaston. Haris Sohail and Babar Azam are also extremely talented and very capable of scoring big. The experience of Mohammad Amir in those conditions will also help as well as played an important part in the previous series as well as in the Champions Trophy triumph.”

Arthur also believes England are going through a transitional phase themselves.

“England themselves are going through a transitional phase,” he said. “Only Joe Root and Alastair Cook are established. Even though they have good players, but even then there is uncertainty about who will play. We know their weakness and will try to exploit it.

Ready to bat at number four: Shafiq

Pakistan middle-order batsman Asad Shafiq has expressed his desire to bat at number four in the longest format of the game.

Shafiq, who scored a well-crafted half-century for Pakistan in an historic Test against Ireland, expressed those desires while talking to the media in Dublin.

“I always wanted to play in the top-order for the team,” said Shafiq. “After the retirement of Younus and Misbah, someone had to fill the void in the top-order. Coach Mickey Arthur and captain Sarfraz Ahmed gave me this responsibility and I am excited to accept the challenge. Before, I had to play with the tail-enders as I used to come at six, which was an added pressure. Now I believe I have more of a chance to play big innings for the team.”

Ireland exult over Test debut despite Pakistan’s dominance

Talking about his experience in Dublin, Shafiq said: “The conditions weren’t easy. The surface had a lot of moisture and therefore, it was not at all easy to bat and score runs in those conditions. I am pleased with the half-century but I shouldn’t have thrown my wicket away playing a rash shot at that situation.”

Talking about the upcoming two-Test series against England, Shafiq said that he is ready to bear the burden of the team’s batting with Azhar Ali and captain Sarfraz.

“I am ready to bear the burden of the team in the batting department alongside Azhar and Sarfraz,” he said. “I also want to motivate youngsters for the tour as well.”
