"We undermine domestic cricket a lot but I've gone there and played a lot of games" : Shan Masood

Shan Masood at a press conference today:

"I batted for close to 2 hours but didn't get many runs. Asad was the only one who got some runs before he got out but batting got easier in the second session. However, we lost our way in the first session and didn't allow ourselves to be in that position where we could have capitalised in the second session"

"South Africa bowled well in the first session and put us under pressure. When you get five wickets, it makes it easier for you to bowl when the wickets gets easier to bat on"

"It was more about the ball misbehaving quite a lot in the first session. The bounce was variable, if you saw Azhar Ali's dismissal, the ball popped up from a length. In terms of the bouncer, it was more about balls rearing up from that length that caught our batsmen and it's these kinds of balls that got our batsmen out"

"In the second session, the ball died down a bit as it lost its lacquer. It didn't do as much but we had five batsmen back in the pavilion already so we didn't give ourselves a good chance"

"If we get a chance again, the aim will be to take the shine off the new ball. As the ball gets older, batting becomes easier and you get a lot of value for runs"

"We'll take it day by day, we'll see how it plays tomorrow. We've been told the surface will get quicker but if you compare it with Centurion, it's probably more bat-able. Hopefully the ball comes on to the bat better"

"Hopefully them not playing a spinner plays in our favour but we have to get through the new ball and make sure we don't lose as many wickets"

"When two batsmen get set, we have to make sure they go on and score big, that's been the story of our tour so far. Batsmen have gotten in, they've gotten starts and nobody has gone on to get a big score. If two batsmen can get a big score then we'll probably be back in the game"

"The first session was pretty tricky. It was a fresh wicket and had some moisture on it and with a coating of grass, alongside cracks from Day 1. There will be this variability. I think Babar was right to leave the ball but it kept low and hit his gloves and lobbed up for a catch whereas Azhar got something that was completely the opposite of that"

"The key is to watch the ball and hope you can negate the one that rears up or keeps low"

"No idea what happened on the last ball... I don't consider myself a bowler at all but the idea was to hit a nice area. It was better to have a seamer bowling rather than Yasir as there was no purchase for the spinners. Hopefully it opens the door for us and allows us to get a few early wickets tomorrow with the new batsmen coming in"

"The story of the tour so far has been that there will be a ball with your name on it but the good thing is that the surfaces here give you an opportunity to score. After lunch when me and Sarfaraz came out, we got a lot of boundaries away and got runs quickly"

"Unfortunately, I fended at one that I should have left and we had already lost five wickets... this surface is something that always keeps the bowler in the hunt and the idea tomorrow will be to keep it as tight as possible and get as many wickets as possible early on"

"The biggest thing for me has been that I've played a lot of cricket (while being out of the team). I know we undermine domestic cricket a lot but I've gone back to domestic cricket and played a lot of games. What also helps is that after a very long time, we had a few good A tours. We played NZ, England, the Australian team. As a cricketer, you just want to play more and more games and that's the only way you will get better. As much work you do outside the field, it doesn't matter until you go inside and perform. That's what will give you the experience to take on international cricket"

"It doesn't matter how good you look, at the end of the day what matters is the runs column and obviously I'd like bigger runs and I'm just working towards that"

Good to see a player crediting domestic cricket, for their improvement.

Yeah, there might be a few pace bowers who may have inflated records and what not, but the batsmen seem to be making runs on merit and deserve recognition.

Also, Shan was initially selected based on links and I disliked him for that reason, but he has improved through hard work and determination, which is great to see and something you have to admire.

As of right now, he is in the team on merit and deserves selection for ODI's, the format which he has really excelled in.

Shan Masood has gone from looking like a poor man's Keaton Jennings to a technically sound batsman who even has the guts to take on the short-ball. Good on him. Hope he continues to improve. A shame that our other batsmen have batted like tail-enders.

The only player with a cricketing brain in our line up. Would make a sound captain.

He really did look comfortable and played at a good strike rate. Good comments also- not the usual comments you get from other players.

Pleasantly surprised to see his performances in this series against one of the best pace attacks in the world. He's worlds away from when he was heading Jimmy Anderson's 80mph bouncers onto the stumps in UAE.

Badly let down by his senior partners.

To be fair to the guy he has done well with the bat, ball and in the field.

His comments are so much more insightful than the other players.Always pleasant to hear him converse.

Not often you see a pakistani batsmen working on his game and improve... usually they go downhill or remain constant. His efforts must be applauded...

Love the comments. It was telling that Bumrah and Agarwal credited the FC system for their success too. It's time we started rebuilding our FC game, rather than getting carried away by the PSL. That's what holds the key to our cricketing future.

That's why Inzi the revolutionary needs to promote domestic performers like Fawad Alam, Abid Ali and Saad Ali.

It's the safest option as usually these guys are in form as well. That's where you learn temperament, grit and work on your weaknesses. It's no joke averaging 50+ in your FC career.

When will we learn>?
