Decision on Azhar’s captaincy will be taken after Australia ODIs, says Shaharyar Khan

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Shaharyar Khan has said that the decision regarding Azhar Ali’s captaincy will be taken once the ODI series against Australia will comes to an end.

His comments came after the Men in Green lost the ODI series following thrashing in the fourth match, where hosts defeated them by 86 runs at Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) on Sunday.

“I don’t want to talk about Azhar Ali in the middle of the series,” said Shaharyar while talking to the Daily Express. “We will decide about the captaincy once the ongoing series finishes.”

The 82-year-old also said that the team’s performance, especially in the fielding department, was below par. “Team’s performance was extremely poor, especially in the fielding department,” he said. “In the third ODI, the fielders missed some chances, but in the fourth match they dropped five catches. How can you expect [Pakistan] to win a match with that performance?”

While talking about Test captain Misbahul Haq’s future, Shaharyar said the decision lies with the 42-year-old, but also reiterated that the board wishes for a fitting send off for the country’s most successful captain in the five-day format.

“We have left the decision of retirement on Misbah, as he can decide what’s best for him,” he said. “There is still some time left before the start of the new series. We are not thinking on the lines of giving him a farewell match, but he is our most successful captain in the Test format, so we want to give him a fitting send off.”

Shaharyar also backed the selection committee working under the leadership of former captain Inzamamul Haq, and further revealed that he hopes a team of youngsters would be selected for the upcoming West Indies tour.

“Winning or losing is a part of the game, but you cannot put the blame on one person or one department,”
he said. “Team’s preparation was not up to the mark, which is why I believe we lost badly in New Zealand and Australia.

“There is domestic cricket going on, and then Pakistan Super League (PSL) is also coming up. So we are hopeful of sending a team full of youngsters on the West Indies.”

Who is Misbah to decide the fate of Pakistan cricket team, it should be PCB to decide how to move from here

I think Shahyrar Khan needs to see my signature.

Somehow never felt comfortable with the words "most successful" captain for someone who captained in most number of wins. It should be basis WL ratio or performance against top teams or sustained top ranking etc.

Like the last line " We are hopeful of sending a team full of youngsters on west indies tour"

Lets hope the team doesnt comprise of youngsters like Kamran Akmal, fawad Alam,Anwar ali, Mohammed Irfan

I was going through some other threads I found out Azhar becoming the next test captain and Sarfaraz to take on the Odi captaincy, though Azhar was terrible in Odis I think he'll be successful in tests, you need patience in Test Cricket and Azhar got them plenty I think he'll improve as a captain but he is just too slow to captain in Odis on the same note Sarfaraz is way too hyper to be the test captain!

We Pakistanis take this fitting send off way too far!

I mean there is a time when you just have to go and stop playing.

Simple.

What is the honor in sticking to the team and doing nothing...this deserving farewell is somehow a drama in Pakistan cricket.

When you are done you are done and you move out if you dont do it there is no honor left in it.

Good to hear these coming from the Chairman that they are thinking along the lines of MISBAH's retirement, send off, farewell whatever u call them and Azhar's captaincy which is horrible at the moment. He was given a good 2 years time and improved only a bit and not upto the mark as expected.. I wont criticize Azhar as he was trying to establish himself as an ODI player and captain the same time. It was disaster set by PCB, which was very tough on Azhar to do in international cricket which has evolved into a modern batsman dominated era..Pakistan as a team is still struggling to do cope up to new int'l standards set even before Azhar's captaincy..

Basically we won't decide anything and at the last minute say ''its too late to change captain now as the next series is almost here''.

Most likely!!! He is just buying time for Misbah and Azhar. After PSL the same old story will begin

Decision of retirement is upto misbah but selecting or not selecting him is not upto him. Follow bangladesh , give young guys chances. 30 plus isnt a youngster.

Being 30 isn't a youngster either. If you are not an established cricketer with 40+ ODIs under your belt at 30 then you shouldn't be in international cricket.

Wao, drastic change of approach - breaking from his precedent.

Fielding cannot be blamed on the captain. If Pakistan wins the match, Azhar gets another series - PCB is very reactive not proactive(lacks vision).

We need a new chairman who is under 50 with commercial links. Can we not headhunt a successful commercial director?

We need to drive in sponsers and and fresh ideas.

Ridiculous comments once again when the team are under extreme pressure.

Why can't he keep his trap shut.

Looks like misbah will play another series on basis of his farewell series and then again won't retire... Lol and then again because he is the most successful Pakistani captain in test he will get another farewell series...

Why is he like this? He was a diplomat once..

He seems to think that if he doesn't speak to the media they will turn against him.

He doesn't realise that sometimes it's best to keep one's mouth shut.

Now its finally the the time mr Sharyar to do things right! They should accept they've made a mistake and Misbah and Waqar should also accept that they've made a terrible decision of recommending a yes man for their own sake!!

Saj your views!

Waqar's ego has costed us alot. Sarfraz should have been made our captain after the WC.

It was a difficult series and Pakistan players must have learned from it bowling and batting as far as Captaincy is concerned for God sake don't make Sarfraz captain make a mature person who can guide the players on the field and for that Hafeez is the best choice and train the modern ways, train them in Australia not Abbotabad hire Wasim Akram Inzi is good Yousaf is good as well Sheryar don't waste time Action and quick otherwise nation will not forgive you we need action and results regards
