PCB announces schedule of West Indies ODIs

Lahore, 28 March 2022:

Rawalpindi will host the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches against the West Indies at the Pindi Cricket Stadium from 8-12 June, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced today.

The West Indies will arrive in Islamabad on 5 June for the One-Day Internationals that will be played on 8, 10 and 12 June.

The ODIs were part of the West Indies’ tour of Pakistan in December 2021. However, with mutual consent, these were rescheduled after five Covid-19 cases were reported in the West Indies side. The West Indies have also agreed to play three T20Is in early 2023, schedule of which will be announced in due course.

The ODIs are part of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League. Top seven-placed sides from this event plus ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 hosts India will qualify directly for the pinnacle 50-over competition, which will be staged next year in October/November.

Series schedule:

8 June – 1st ODI, Rawalpindi
10 June – 2nd ODI, Rawalpindi
12 June – 3rd ODI, Rawalpindi

one of the few ODI series pakistan should be winning and getting points from.

Finally a series we can win after the humiliation we're going to get vs Australian B team.

Good should have been a 5 match series for some minnow bashers to boost their averages nonetheless hopefully deserving players will be selected and not the rellu kattas

June is the hottest month of the year in Pindi with average highs of 40 degrees. Even the average low barely touches 25 degrees. It is going to be borderline dangerous to be playing an ODI in this weather. Feel for the players of both sides.

its the standard 3 games as part of the world cup qualifiers.

Why do all three matches have to be in one venue?

It gets too boring watching three + LOI matches in one venue

I know because of COVID, but if they were able to successfully host the recent 3 match test series against Australia, they should be fine to do three ODIs in three different venues.

Its been done also for security reasons and the cost of moving teams around. If this has to be the case then so be it.

Not excited at all.

WI brings its C game against every team on planet except for England.

WI should just stick playing only against England.

Need a few ODI wins for the World Cup qualification so not bad to get few easy wins.

WI coming all the way crossing continents to stay less than a week to play just 3 ODIs sounds ridiculous..

Why not have 5 ODIs or 3 odis and 3 t20is

Hopefully we'll carry this momentum to WI series always gives a bossy feeling winning ODI series watching ODI is like a 9 to 5 job sp much routine in it

Pakistan successfully hosted Australia for three Tests, 3 ODIs and a one-off T20 International with the tour only concluding on April 5. The series was played in the bio-bubble with the players not allowed to come in contact with the outside public at all. However, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is now likely to end bio-bubble life for international matches after their experiment at the domestic circuit was successful.

PCB didn’t create a bio-bubble for the domestic One-Day tournament but the players were advised to take precautions. The board had to not impose any strict rules during the competition. All the 33 matches of the tournament went well without a single COVID case being reported.

Hence, the board is confident now to host international matches without the bio-bubble as well according to reports in Cricket Pakistan.

Meanwhile, it is also understood that the PCB will send the proposal to play in a bubble-free environment to Cricket West Indies (CWI) as well. According to PCB’s planning, there will be no COVID testing on arrival for the Caribbean players and regular testing will not be done either. A particular individual will only be tested if he/she shows any kind of symptoms. If an individual is tested positive for the virus, then he/she will be isolated for five days.

The National Command and Control Center (NCOC) has also been abolished which has also led to all the government restrictions being lifted. International Cricket Council (ICC) has left it to the two boards to decide on this aspect, however, the consent of the visiting team and board is required for the same.

As far as the tour is concerned, West Indies are scheduled to tour Pakistan in June for three One-Day Internationals. While the venues are not yet confirmed, the three ODIs are expected to be played on June 6, 8 and 10 respectively.

Pakistan men's team training camp for the ODI series against West Indies will commence from the third week of May.

According to details, a meeting of the team management, PCB's Department International and Chief Selector will take place after the Eid holiday. The meeting will decide the strategy for future activities of the Men in Green.

Meanwhile, players involved in County Championship in England have been directed to report by June 2.

The foreign coaching staff of the national team will arrive in Lahore in the second week of May. The foreign coaching staff had gone on leave after the home series against Australia.

Pakistan should win this comfortably hopefully Haris and Dahani are given a chance.

Im hoping Babar Azam gets some monster runs. I have suspecting atleast 2 odi centuries for this series anything less would be dissapointing imo. Pak will have toe careful, Windies can turn it up, however it should be 3-0 in favor of Pakistan, I think it will end up being 2-1 for Pakistan.

I can see us having one bad game.

WI always play Pakistan with no gas in the tank. They seem only interested to beat England or the Aussies.

I would only be excited to see the series if Pakistan plays some young guns like Haider Ali, Dhani and Muhammad Haris in the XI.

Not really interested to see babar, Imam & Fakhar improving their averages.

I rather we lost the series in the process of trying to find our next stars.

Seems series venues could be changed due to the ensuing political crisis.

As per media reports:

It has also been decided to seek the opinion of the government in this regard. Sources said that so far, there has been no change in venues, but the PCB is also looking at other venues as a backup plan, as the local governing body fears that the venue of the series may have to be changed due to the political situation. Because a political party has announced to call a march against the government after May 20,

ST JOHN’S, Antigua – The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Selection Panel today announced the West Indies Senior Men’s squad for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) tours of the Netherlands and Pakistan. The West Indies will visit the Netherlands for three ODIs on May 31, June 2 and 4, followed by another three ODIs on June 8, 10 and 12 in Pakistan.

The tour of Netherlands will be the first-ever ODI Series between the two teams and will be played at the VRA Cricket Ground, Amstelveen. The matches in Pakistan will be played at the Pindi Stadium in Rawalpindi. Both series form part of the part of the ICC ODI Super League, where teams will have the opportunity to earn points to secure one of the top seven places, excluding hosts India, to gain automatic qualification for the 2023 ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Three newcomers have been named in the ODI squad – fast bowlers Jayden Seales and Shermon Lewis as well as specialist batter Keacy Carty. Both Seales and Lewis have played at the Test level. Carty is the first player from St. Maarten to be selected for the West Indies Senior Men’s team.

Lead Selector, the Most Hon. Dr. Desmond Haynes said: “We were impressed with Carty and the way he goes about his innings, we saw several glimpses of his ability the way he played against England earlier this year for the CWI President’s XI. We hope that giving him this opportunity he will recognize the importance of representing West Indies. We think he is a young batsman with great promise, and this is the kind of tour he can show he fits in.”

Haynes added: “We also have a very good group of young fast bowlers who have demonstrated their ability and we want to use these two tours to give them opportunities in the 50-over format. We have a week in The Netherlands and another week in Pakistan and this should provide them with quality opposition to bowl against as we build towards the Cricket World Cup in 2023. Phillip has been around for some time, and we know what he can offer, Seales has been very good in Test cricket and Lewis is making a return to the West Indies set-up following some good performances.”

All format all-rounder Jason Holder is being rested to manage his workload whilst Shimron Hetmyer is also unavailable for selection to be at home for the birth of his first child. Evin Lewis was not considered for selection after failing to meet CWI’s fitness criteria.

Batter Keacy Carty has become the first player from St Maarten to be picked for the West Indies.

St Maarten, the southern part of an island part-owned by France, is part of the Netherlands. Inhabitants are qualified to play cricket for the West Indies or the Netherlands.

Carty, 25, has now been called up for a tour that begins with matches against the Netherlands before moving to Pakistan.

"We hope that giving him this opportunity he will recognise the importance of representing West Indies," said head selector Desmond Haynes. "We think he is a young batsman with great promise, and this is the kind of tour he can show he fits in."

The 25-year-old Carty made 57 and 49 against England in March in a Test warm-up game for the CWI President's XI.

"We were impressed with Carty and the way he goes about his innings," added Haynes. "We saw several glimpses of his ability the way he played against England for the CWI President's XI.

I don't know, how can anyone enjoy losing the home series.

Pakistan is currently 5th Ranked team in ODi, whereas WI is 9th.

Losing a series against them means huge dent in rating and Pakistan may slip to 6th position. Moreover, it may damage WC direct qualification chances.

We don't have some earth shattering talent sitting on the bench. Just give a chance to someone in the middle order and play Dhani in the fast bowling position instead of Hasan or Shaheen. For the rest no need to change anything.

Cricket West Indies lead selector Desmond Haynes and Director of Cricket Jimmy Adams have blasted players for not being able to meet minimum fitness standards that would qualify them for selection to the senior men's squad.

“I’m pretty disappointed as well,” Haynes said speaking in a press conference on Monday.

“When you look at the amount of cricket that is being played around the world, I think there is a certain level of fitness that is required and I think there is a standard that you should set as a professional cricketer,” added Haynes before going on to mention how picking players while being unsure of whether or not they can finish tours is a concern.

“I do get concerned when you have to be selecting the side and not sure if these guys are going to be fit enough to finish the tour,” he said.

"For contracted players who are unavailable for fitness, there are consequences that are outlined in the contracts," Adams said.

One player who missed out on selection for the tour of the Netherlands in June because of failure to meet minimum fitness requirements is Trinidadian left-handed opener, Evin Lewis.

"We have players who, in our eyes are good enough to be considered for selection who are unavailable because of not even coming in on minimum fitness standards. That is very disappointing. For players who are contracted, that is doubly disappointing,” the former West Indies middle-order batsman added.

On a more positive note, Haynes commented on the inclusion of new faces in the team like St. Maarten’s Keacy Carty.

“As the new group of selectors, we have made it very clear that we will give opportunities to people and try to broaden the pool and start thinking with 2023 in mind,” he said.

According to reports PCB are planning to schedule ODIs to start around 5pm , rather than 2pm as per usual day night games to avoid players suffering the effects of the heatwave. PCB are also planning extra drinks breaks as a precaution from the severe heat expected.

Makes sense. So the games would finish past midnight? Sounds bizzare but we need to avoid the heat wave I guess.

The below 3 players should play who have shown enough quality in a particular format.

Abdullah can be tested instead of imaam or fakhar.
Haris can play in the middle order.
Dahani can be tested.

Instead of ODIs it should be renamed to OEIs or ONIs like One night international

With the Long March happening in the Islamabad area - will the Pindi games be moved to Lahore or Karachi?

On 4 June, WI play in the cool Netherland and 8 June in the hot boiling Pakistan.

Gosh that is one tough itinerary with not much gap.

Camp has been postponed indefinitely due to the prevailing political situation although the ODI Series against the West Indies remains on track

I'm not sure what's happening in Pakistan, but if the situation is unstable, will PCB look to schedule this series in UAE? considering this is part of WSL and both teams will be keen to bag these points.

Afghanistan are sitting pretty and may earn a direct qualification as they've got another 3 games coming up against a struggling Zimbabwe.

I think because Imran Khans political party, PTI, wants to hold a rally or something in the capital city where the teams were going to stay, so roads and such could be blocked.

Babar Azam speaking to the press:

"We are confident about winning the series against West Indies. It is not easy to play in high temperatures which is why players are putting in hard work in the ongoing conditioning camp"

"We have a fairly long cricket season. After West Indies, we have to go on an important tour of Sri Lanka. We have a series against England and more importantly the T20 World Cup as well"

"I always try to perform in a manner which helps the team. Planning is important when playing in different conditions. I also try to remain calm when I enter the field"

Camp has been postponed indefinitely due to the prevailing political situation although the ODI Series against the West Indies remains on track

What a sad state of our country where everything and everyone has to suffer and take a back seat because of ever present politics.

According to PCB Director-Media Sami-ul-Hasan Burney, no proposal is under consideration to postpone the series.

The series is scheduled to begin on June 8 in Rawalpindi while Multan has been announced as the backup venue for the three-match series.

Sami affirmed that they are waiting for official confirmation regarding where to hold these matches.

"Holding any event in Pakistan would not be possible without the support of the local administration," Sami said.

"Matches will be held at the venue where the green signal will be received, time is short for decisions," he added.

PCB had announced that the players will assemble in Rawalpindi on June 1 for a training camp, while West Indies will arrive on June 5.

"It is important to know where the visitors have to reach before booking while the broadcasters and their equipment must also arrive on time. It is also important to know whether they will be delivered to Rawalpindi or Multan," he added.

"We also have to manage the logistics needs, including the hotel. We hope that the government will guide us by the end of this week, and the series will go according to its schedule," Sami concluded.

The ODI series between Pakistan and West Indies is likely to take place as per schedule at the Pindi Cricket Stadium in Rawalpindi after Pakistan Tehreek-e- Insaf's (PTI) long march ended.

According to sources, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) now hopes to get the green signal from the government soon. The board officials are in touch with the government as the decision on the host venue of the series must be taken this week to complete the logistics on time.

The training camp of the Pakistan team is scheduled to start from June 1, while West Indies will arrive on June 5.

Imran Khan with his supporters will again protest after 6 days in Islamabad if his demands are not met...So the chances of this series going ahead is still not 100%.

OdI series in such scorching heat is insanity but PcB already has limited options hopefully the crowd will come looks unlikely though timing is weird also its basically ONI's

I do worry about this with police and security resources stretched due to the protests and Imran Khan supporters setting fire to trees etc. Might be better to postpone for another time. Would be quite ridiculous playing an ODI in potentially record breaking temperatures anyway.

The long march and protests ended though.

National Cricket Team / Training Camp

The training camp of the national cricket team for the series against West Indies will start from June 1 in Lahore

All players in the 16-member squad are directed to report to Lahore for the camp

All players playing county cricket in England will also join the camp on June 1

Three ODIs between Pakistan and West Indies will be played on June 8, 10 and 12.

Amid rising political uncertainty in the country, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has started preparations to hold the One-day International series against the West Indies next month in Multan after receiving verbal instructions from the Punjab government to shift the series from Rawalpindi, the original venue, well-informed sources have told Dawn.

The three-match series is scheduled to be held at the Pindi Cricket Stadium, Rawalpindi from June 8 to 12 and the PCB has not officially shifted the series to Multan.

After receiving the verbal instructions though the PCB has started the preparations for hosting the West Indies at the Multan Cricket Stadium, unless it gets written instructions from the provincial government, it will not make any official announcement about the change of venue, sources said.

Meanwhile, the PCB announced that the national camp for the West Indies series would be held in Lahore instead of Rawalpindi. The camp, scheduled to start on June 1, ends on June 4.

On June 5, the Pakistan squad will leave either for Rawalpindi or Multan while the West Indies party is due to arrive in Pakistan in the wee hours of June 6. Therefore, the newly-emerging scenario does not give the PCB much time to make a final call on devising the journey plan of the visiting team.

As security arrangements for an international series are made with the coordination between the federal and the provincial government, it is believed that incumbent PCB chairman Ramiz Raja will have a difficult task ahead with change in government both in Punjab and federal level.

Ex-Pakistan opener Ramiz was elected as PCB chairman during the era of former prime minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan in September last year.

The federal government changed last month as a result of the no-confidence vote in Parliament after which Shahbaz Sharif — president of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) which is a staunch political rival of PTI — was elected as the country’s prime minister. Rana Mashood, a key figure of the ruling party, during a media talk earlier this month explicitly advised Ramiz to leave the office saying the new government would have its own man as chairman.

Ramiz however is still working as PCB chief despite the fact that holding the forthcoming series against the West Indies, without the required cooperation and support from the government side may create a lot of problems.

Playing in Multan in June !

These ODIs should've been scheduled instead of those 3 absolutely bloody useless T20Is in Dec.

Have we ever played in Punjab in June?

This seems like a pointless series. Its unbearably hot and its unlikely crowd will attend.

I hope there is more regular drinks breaks or timeouts to protect the players.

Multan is hotter than Pindi or Lahore. I feel bad for players who will play in this weather. What is the name of this Odi Series 'The heat Stroke cup' They should have played this series in Karachi ( Day Night format). At least there is sea breeze in the evening.

Better venue could have been the Abbotabad Cricket stadium.

Never been to Multan, I know it's extremely hot there but Karachi is so humid, I struggled to breathe in Karachi. Climate wise it's the most difficult place I've been to, I don't think Karachi is a better alternative. Pindi has to be coolest of all the established stadiums.

Even Rawalpindi is into the mid 40s. Basically this series should not be happening at this time anywhere in Pakistan.

Concerns regarding weather are genuine but, its a series which was postponed previously and had to be rescheduled, had to be played before the ICC WC super league ends. Calendars of both the teams were packed and his possibly was the only window.

Hopefully everything goes smoothly and players are looked after well with the icepacks and all other facilities which can be provided.

Windies players are saying they are fine with it so what is the issue. We couldnt fit it anywhere else.
South Africa are in India and so is Aussies in Srilanka all in June.

A chance for Pakistan to grab useful points in the World Cup qualifiers. Not sure why the heat is becoming an issue.

It is literally 30 degrees in Colombo. Cannot be compared to 45 degrees in Multan. Doesn't matter if the windies players agreed or not, doesn't make it right. This is a terrible thing.

Aaqib Javed speaking to the media:

"It is difficult to play ODIs in hot weather. T20 matches can be played this season, as these matches start late and take place at night."

"Fast bowlers would be playing cricket in the well of death, but when batsmen play long innings, it will be difficult for them too. Quality cricket is not going to happen, and it is just being played for points"

"It takes two to three weeks to adjust from cold to hot weather, but it didn't happen. It can affect the performance of the players"
