West Indies tour of Bangladesh (2018)

West Indies will tour Bangladesh this month without their skipper and influential allrounder Jason Holder, after it was announced Wednesday that he needs at least four weeks to recover from a shoulder injury suffered using the recent series in India.

No replacement captain has been named, but given that the deputy Kraigg Brathwaite led West Indies in the Rajkot Test against India when Holder was out with an ankle injury, the board is likely to go with the same option.

Johnny Grave, the Cricket West Indies CEO, was quoted as telling Caribbean News Service: “Jason has a partial thickness tear of his subscapularis tendon. He will undergo physiotherapy and strength work from the period November to December and will be reassessed in four weeks time. The medical panel was concerned that if Jason was to bowl in Bangladesh, the partial tear may become a full tear which may involve the need for surgery and/or a significant break from cricket. It was, therefore, then recommended for Jason not to travel to Bangladesh and instead undergo physiotherapy and rehab in Barbados.”

Holder, 27, backed West Indies to do well in Bangladesh in his absence.

“I am definitely disappointed not being able to make the tour of Bangladesh, but based on advice from the medical team, we felt this was the best course of action to deal with the ongoing issues I have been having with my shoulder,” he said of the latest setback.

“I have been having issues with my shoulder since the World Cup qualifiers in Zimbabwe in March. Since then, I’ve been trying to manage it and the pain levels but it has gotten to a point now where I’ve got to take time to correct it so that going forward I have no further issues. Obviously I am disappointed to miss the tour, but I know the boys are capable of beating Bangladesh.”

Bangladesh host West Indies for two Tests, three ODIs and three T20Is. The series gets underway on November 22, with the touring team playing a BCB XI four days before.

If he is genuine 6'2", then have to say guy is lazy - should have gone to pace bowling :(

I think, leg spin is one art, where not always height helps - yes, may be 5'3" won't work, but I think instead of 6'2", probably 5'10" is more suitable.

Tall leggis often are not the best turners, rather they use their height on uneven surface (or day 4/5 wickets) with flippers & top spinners. O'Reilly was 6'2" and he was unplayable on drying wickets during uncovered wicket era, Kumble probably similar in height and he was the toughest bowler on 4/5th day typical Indian wickets, Chandra close to 6 or over and he was also not the most conventional leggi, few years back in IPL I saw a leggi around 6'5", but he didn't last long. Leg spinners need to flight the ball and take the ball above eye line of batsmen, then needs to drop it on length - I think, 5'7-11" is probably best height for conventional leggi (Warne was probably around 5'10" & Qadir around 5'6", Grimmet, Gupte & Mushi even shorter).

I am also waiting to see him.

He has no competitive match under his belt. He is the spin hunt find. Our bowling coach has been praising him since his find. Let's see how good is he.

Then it will take sometime to be included in national team. We shouldn't be in a hurry. International cricket is very tough

Great insights as always!! I think it was Rahul Sharma. He also played for India in a couple of games I think.

Agree with your points.

But we have only two upcoming leggies who are slight better. Rishad is one of them. And we badly need a quality leg spinner and a genuine off spinner who can really turn ball. Hope we find one from these two.

Shakib Al Hasan, who has been on the sidelines since sustaining a finger injury in the Asia Cup, will return to international action as Bangladesh captain in the home series against the Windies.

Liton Das, the opener, Nazmul Hossain Shanto, the middle-order batsman, and paceman Shaiful Islam, who were all part of squad for the two-Test series against Zimbabwe, have been dropped for the first Test against the Windies.

Soumya Sarkar, who dished out impressive all-round performances in the National Cricket League in Bangladesh in October, has been recalled to the national squad, and Naeem Hasan, the uncapped spinner, has also been drafted in.

Mushfiqur Rahim was the Player of the Match as Bangladesh tied their Test series 1-1 against Zimbabwe.

He scored 219 in the first innings, the highest score by a Bangladeshi batsman in a Test

Taijul Islam, Player of the Series against Zimbabwe, and Mushfiqur Rahim, who notched up his second Test double-century in Mirpur, feature prominently in the 13-member squad.

Bangladesh drew their two-Test series against Zimbabwe 1-1 after bouncing back in Mirpur after losing the Sylhet Test.

They will take the Windies on in a two-Test series, the first of which will start in Chittagong on 22 November.

Squad for Chittagong Test: Shakib Al Hasan (c), Soumya Sarker, Imrul Kayes, Mohammad Mithun, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Ariful Haque, Mahmudullah, Mehidy Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam, Khaled Ahmed, Naeem Hasan

CHATTOGRAM, Bangladesh – The West Indies Senior Men’s Team drew their two-day warm-up match against a BCB President’s XI in Chattogram, thanks to half-centuries from Kieran Powell and Shai Hope to set up a total of 303/7.

The WINDIES batsmen took to the crease after Captain Kraigg Brathwaite elected to bat first. He did not last too king as he was bowled for 6. Powell was joined by hope and the pair struck some illustrious boundaries and sixes in taking the WINDIES to a solid start. The pair added 163 runs together before Hope retired on 88 just after lunch to give the other batters some time in the middle to get accustomed to the Bangladesh pitch.

Powell continued his runfest, until he was caught behind for a well-played 72. Roston Chase added 35, while Shimron Hetmyer and Shane Dowrich scored 24 each. Raymon Reifer and Keemo Paul ended on 14 and 18 respectively as the WINDIES posted 303/7 from 86.3 overs at the close of Day1.

The BCB XI had a very solid start from their opening pair of Sadman Islam and Soumya Sarker, who posted 126 for the loss of the first wicket when Jomel Warrican had Saker caught for 78. Islam was joined by Nazmul Hossain and the pair added a further 47-runs to the BCB’s total before Hossain was bowled by Kemar Roach for 21. Islam was eventually runout by Reifer for 73. MD. Mithun remained not out on 27 and Fazie Mahmud on 2 not out as the match ended in a draw.

The BCB President’s XI closed on 232/5. Shannon Gabriel was the pick of the WINDIES bowlers, taking 2/24, while Roach and Warrican had 1 wicket each.

The WINDIES play Bangladesh in the first of two Test matches starting on Thursday November 22 in Chattogram.

Nic Pothas said, it is an honour to be asked to be the Head Coach of the West Indies Cricket team for the immediate future. The Bangladesh series will be a tough challenge which we look forward to embracing.”

He should have been playing for BD by now. He was highest run scorer for 2014 U19 WC as well. But, time is in his side - he'll replace Imrul in a year time. Imrul saved his career in Asia cup, then against ZIM, otherwise by now Sadman would have been in squad.

ODIs are going to be blockbusters I think. Very evenly matched teams and anybody can win the series with BD holding a slight edge. Great matchup.

Imrul Kayes has been ruled out of Bangladesh’s second Test against the West Indies in Dhaka with a shoulder and toe injury.

Kayes joins Tamim Iqbal on the sidelines, who missed the first Test with a side strain, and is still recovering from his injury.

Minhajul Abedin, chief selector, confirmed the omission of Kayes to reporters, saying: “The physio report says that Imrul has an injury on his shoulder and toe. He will need 10 days for recovery.”

Kayes’ omission paves the way for a debut for Shadman Islam, who hit 73 for a BCB XI against the touring visitors in a warm-up match prior to the first Test.

The 23-year-old left-hander has been in good touch for Dhaka Metro of late, and was included in the squad for the first Test, which Bangladesh won by 64 runs.

The second and final Test of the series begins on November 30 in Dhaka.

Squad: Shakib Al Hasan (Captain), Soumya Sarker, Md Mithun, Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmud Ullah, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Mustafizur Rahman, Taijul Islam, Naeem Hasan, Ariful Haque, Syed Khaled Ahmed, Shadman Islam

What happened to Litton Das? Was he dropped or injured?

Bangladesh stalwart Tamim Iqbal is set to return to the top of the order for the upcoming home ODI series against the West Indies.

He has not played international cricket since sustaining a wrist injury against Sri Lanka in the opening match of the Asia Cup in September. It was expected that Iqbal would return for the two-match Test series, but an untimely rib injury in training further delayed his comeback.

Iqbal's wrist injury ruled him out of the Asia Cup Iqbal's wrist injury ruled him out of the Asia Cup
The 29-year old has been a mainstay for his country across all formats since his breakthrough in 2007, amassing 20 international centuries and recording a whopping 183 ODI caps.

"He has been cleared by the physio to play the ODIs. We are expecting him to play from the start of the series," said Minhajul Abedin, chief selector for Bangladesh.

Iqbal and ODI skipper Mashrafe Mortaza are set to play for a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI in a warm-up game against the Windies this week.

"We included Mashrafe and Tamim in the practice match squad as we felt they need some match practice before the series," Minhajul added.

Bangladesh are currently battling it out with the Windies in the second and final Test in Mirpur, having toppled the tourists by 64 runs in the first bout.

The first ODI of the three-match series commences on 9 December, before matches on the 14th and 17th. A three-game T20I series will follow.

BRAVO AND BRATHWAITE RETURN TO WINDIES ODI SQUAD FOR BANGLADESH SERIES.

DHAKA, Bangladesh- The Selection Panel of Cricket West Indies has named a 15-member squad to play Bangladesh in three (3) One Day Internationals on December 9,11,14 in Bangladesh.

The selection sees the return of Darren Bravo to the ODI squad, along with T20 skipper Carlos Brathwaite and Roston Chase. Recent debutants, Fabian Allen, Chandrapaul Hemraj and Oshane Thomas retain their places following the ODI series against India last month.

Due to the absence of regular Captain Jason Holder, CWI’s Board of Directors has approved Rovman Powell as interim Captain, as the WINDIES seek to reverse the recent 2-1 home series defeat in July 2018.

Chairman of Selectors Courtney Browne said, “With two more ODI Series before the 2019 World Cup, the Bangladesh series allows us to narrow our search for our final 15-member World Cup squad. In the absence of captain Jason Holder, the panel believes the team can still be competitive, especially with the return of Darren Bravo. Darren’s experience will add value to the batting, which in turn will place selection pressure for spots in the squad. The selection panel therefore takes this opportunity to wish the team much success in Bangladesh.”

The full team is as follows:
1. Rovman Powell (Captain)
2. Marlon Samuels
3. Devendra Bishoo
4. Roston Chase
5. Chandrapaul Hemraj
6. Shimron Hetmyer
7. Darren Bravo
8. Shai Hope

Media Release from CWI:

SAVAR, Bangladesh- The WINDIES lost their One Day International warmup against a Bangladesh Cricket Board XI by 51 runs via the Duckworth Lewis method when the umpires called for a close of play due to failing light.

The WINDIES elected to bat first on a pitch that promised bounties for the batsmen. Shai Hope and Kieran Powell started well. The pair took a liking to the seamers that Bangladesh surprisingly used in the match. With 101 on the board, Nazmul Islam had Powell caught by Imrul Kayes for 43. Hope carried on, adding 58 runs with Darren Bravo, before Bravo fell for 24, WINDIES 159/2 after 26.1 overs.

Shai Hope fell soon after for a brilliant 81, stumped trying to charge Nazmul for another six. Marlon Samuels made 5 before Mashrafe Mortaza had him caught. Next over saw Rovman Powell dismissed without scoring, but Roston Chase and Fabian Allen ensured the WINDIES innings got back on scoring. The pair posted 78 runs together, with a combined 14-fours and 2-sixes to lift the WINDIES past 300. Allen fell for a well-played 48, while Chase remained on 68 not out, WINDIES 331/8 from their 50 overs. Rubel Hossain took 2/55, while Nazmul Islam had 2/61 and Mehedi Hasan Rana 2/65.

Set a target of 332 to win, Bangladesh saw the return of Tamim Iqbal, who wasted no time nor showed any signs of being away from the sport due to injury. He punished the WINDIES fast bowlers smashing 13-fours and 4-sixes in his way to an unbeaten 107. Opening partner Imrul Kayes was the first wicket to fall, he made 27. Tamim batted with Mohammad Mithun and the pair posted 114 together, with Tamim the run-scorer.

After Tamim fell, Soumya Sarkar continued the chase, he ensured that his team kept ahead of the D/L method which came into use because of fading light. Needing 18 runs for victory, the umpires consulted and decided it was too dark to continue play. Both sides shook hands and Bangladesh walked off the field well ahead of the required amount, thereby winning by 51 runs via the D/L method. Bangladesh finished on 314/6, with Soumya on 103 not out and Captain Mashrafe Mortaza on 22 not out. Roston Chase was the best bowler for the WINDIES taking 2/57, while Devendra Bishoo had the next best figures of 2/81.

The first of three ODIs takes place on Sunday December 9 at the Sher-E-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka.

Any idea/explanation on why there's no Andre Russell & Sunil Narine in the ODI squad ?

Gayle is playing in MSL & Lewis has a future discussion meeting with CWI.

TBH Evin Lewis has been in poor form when he last played ODIs, poor in CPL too

Bangladesh vs West Indies | 3rd ODI | Sylhet | Dec 14, 2018 | Pre-Match Discussion Thread

Windies walk into the series decider against Bangladesh brimming with confidence having sealed a thrilling win in the second ODI. However, Shai Hope's ton failed to mask the fragility of their batting order and the batsmen will once again be in focus in Sylhet. Bangladesh too are struggling with a similar issue. Despite having their big guns - Tamim Iqbal, Shakib al Hasan and Musfiqur Rahim - in form, they have been losing wickets in clusters and have failed to capitalise after being in strong positions.

Bangladesh, though, have an easy way out of the issues. The think-tank will be keen to identify a settled top three and give them a decent run. The juggling act between Soumya Sarkar, Liton Das and Imrul Kayes for the second and third spot in the batting order hasn't helped the team but there aren't too many glitches that should leave the side sweating. Windies, on the other hand, need to find long-term solutions to the form issues of Marlon Samuels and Darren Bravo. Chandrapaul Hemraj, in the opportunities he has got, hasn't done much to inspire any sort of confidence.

Hope shone bright while Shimron Hetmyer showed in India that he can carry the batting on his shoulder. Windies will hope the duo fire together and find ample support from others to challenge the hosts. Kemar Roach and Oshane Thomas give Windies bowling enough fire early on while the form shown by Devendra Bishoo in the second ODI gives them the additional edge.

The last time Windies won an ODI series was in 2014 when they trounced the same opposition at home 3-0. Mehidy Hasan acknowledged they are taking inspiration from their series win in the Caribbean earlier this year and are confident of securing the series. Windies have a chance to pick up some confidence ahead of the T20I series and a series win will go a long way in boosting the players in what has been a tough tour.

When: Bangladesh vs Windies, 3rd ODI, 12pm local time

Where: Sylhet International Cricket Stadium

What to expect: A much better track to bat on with good bounce and carry. The batsmen should enjoy the conditions with the track expected to stay true for easy strokeplay. Mortaza had mentioned that more dew is expected in Sylhet, which means that the captain winning the toss would prefer chasing.

Team news:

Bangladesh: The hosts could well look to bat Sarkar at No. 3 and have Das open the batting with Tamim. The lack of runs could well go against Imrul Kayes after scores of 0 and 4 in the series.

Windies: The visitors are unlikely to change the set that won them the previous contest but will expect a lot more from the more established names.

What they said:

"Shai Hope is playing excellent cricket and in the last game it was a chanceless effort, so we need to work on how to stop him. They won because they played well while we lacked in some areas" - Mehidy Hasan.

Teams:

Windies (From): Chandrapaul Hemraj, Shai Hope(w), Darren Bravo, Marlon Samuels, Shimron Hetmyer, Rovman Powell(c), Roston Chase, Keemo Paul, Kemar Roach, Devendra Bishoo, Oshane Thomas, Fabian Allen, Carlos Brathwaite, Sunil Ambris, Kieran Powell

Bangladesh (From): Tamim Iqbal, Liton Das, Soumya Sarkar, Imrul Kayes, Mushfiqur Rahim(w), Shakib Al Hasan, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza(c), Mehidy Hasan, Mustafizur Rahman, Rubel Hossain, Ariful Haque, Nazmul Islam, Mohammad Saifuddin, Abu Hider Rony, Mohammad Mithun

I hope that it will be a fascinating contest and Bangladesh comes out as a winner.

The team will be captained by Carlos Brathwaite, with interim ODI captain Rovman Powell as his deputy.

angladesh have announced a 14-man squad, to be led by Shakib Al Hasan, for the three-match Twenty20 International series against the Windies starting 17 December.

Imrul Kayes was the only omission from the side currently playing the one-day international series apart from Mashrafe Mortaza, who has retired from the shortest format.

Kayes last played a T20I in October 2017 and didn't exactly impress the selectors after suffering failures in the first couple of ODIs with scores of four and zero.

Bangladesh's last T20I series was also against the Windies, played in the Caribbean and United States of America. Bangladesh won that series 2-1.

From the squad for that assignment, Bangladesh have dropped Abu Jayed and Mosaddek Hossain, while Sabbir Rahman is serving a six-month disciplinary suspension by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.

Any idea/explanation on why there's no Andre Russell & Sunil Narine in the ODI squad ?

Gayle is playing in MSL & Lewis has a future discussion meeting with CWI.

I have the same question. Gayle ,Russel,Lewis played in the recently concluded ODI series against BD in Caribbean .But why not in BD?

DHAKA - Ahead of the T20I series, even as Bangladesh chose to rest, Windies had a full fledged training session. They are buoyed by the return of Evin Lewis in the squad and are looking to transform their fortunes on the tour in a format where they have done well.

The tourists may have lost the Test and ODI legs, but are expected to give Bangladesh a tough time in the shortest format. However, Mushtaq Ahmed, the latest addition to their coaching personnel, coming in as a spin consultant, noted the team is yet to learn the art of winning games on a consistent basis.

“Life is all about moving on,” he said on Saturday. “Those guys are in the process of learning. They won the Bangladesh series back home. So it’s just a matter of winning a couple of good games. And because we won the second ODI - overall those guys are very good cricketers. They just need to know the method of winning more consistently. It’s a new team, lots of young people, they are learning the brand of international cricket and hopefully, sooner or later they can deliver the skill for their nation. I fully believe that those guys are good cricketers, they are the best people, they are lovely to work with. I think they are going to play lots of good cricket.”

The former Pakistan legspinner believed the experience the players have gained from the recently-concluded Test and ODI series versus Bangladesh has helped them understand and execute their gameplans better. However, he added that mastering the spin-friendly conditions will be an ever-learning process for the young side. “(Devendra) Bishoo bowled very well in the last match, (Roston) Chase bowled well,” he said. “So they understand what pace you have to bowl in those conditions, what fields you have to have for different batsmen. On different grounds, different pitches, you have to vary the pace differently.

Due to new variations, new pitches, new grounds, the strategy has to be changed. I think the guys are learning that art.”

Mushtaq believed the absence of Mashrafe Mortaza, who has retired from T20Is, will give the visitors a bit of a boost in the upcoming series.

“A leader does make a huge difference,” he believes. “Because a good leader holds the team well. When you have a good leader and he is holding a team well, it’s always an advantage. But we don’t see people, we don’t see anything else. We have to play our way and remember our strength. And hopefully if we can do that and execute our skills well, we can win against any team.”

Not sure what he meant by "They won the Bangladesh series back home"

West Indies lost both the ODI and T20 series to Bangladesh at their home earlier this year

I have the same question. Gayle ,Russel,Lewis played in the recently concluded ODI series against BD in Caribbean .But why not in BD?

Russell is injured I read somewhere. Lewis is back in T20Is. Gayle has to be back soon. I believe he wants to play WC 2019. I would really want to know about the plans of Sunil Narine. Will he want to play in the WC 2019 ?
