West Indies v Australia | 2nd Test | Port of Spain | Apr 15-19, 2012

Very sporting declaration by Clarke, hope the WI can pull it off. Sammy is looking good with the bat, if he can get the RRR down to about 2.5 then Chanderpaul should be able to pull it off.

Aus will lose this match.

Very brave decision there.

Sammy is a crappy batsman. But when the target is with in reach, these kind of sloggers will play like they have nothing to lose.

168 runs in 52 overs is pretty easy :fawad

Look at his test captaincy record. Has he ever needed to make a sporting declaration?

That's not really the point. The Q is would he do it to go for a win in a situation like this when he is already 1-0 up in the series? I think we all know the answer, don't we? His fear of losing is far greater than his passion for a win. He was pacing his innings in a T20 match for goodness sake. And would he come up the order like Sammy did today to seize the initiative and lead from the front?

The target looks very much on but we have to remember Clarke can go very defensive if he chooses to. It's not easy to score on here against a defensive line and field set.

Windies have to go far it being behind in the series.

Well it's just your opinion. No such similar situation has occured so you don't have any evidence. Don't attribute Misbah's batting style to his captaincy.

And no he wouldn't. Because he's not a naturally attacking batsman. Sammy didn't go up the order just because he's captain.

Good to Sammy going for it (remind everyone how gutless India was out in the Caribbean a few months ago).

Clarkes problem is that they only need 3-4 runs an over. If he goes too defensive, with men all over the boundary then they can get 'em in singles.

It was equally Sammy's decision as well at that time, he accepted draw as well. Or he offered a draw on a first place, we don't know!

Chacha MBA is a good Test captain but still a very defensive one. He would rather go for a draw when 1-0 up in a series than go for a win, in a situation where he could very well lose. Just my opinion. Now don't make me go and dig up facts for you...bc I won't.:)

This would have been a great finish but looks like it will end up in a lame rain affected draw.

good game but weather is frustrating really. i hope it doesnt devolve into a meaningless draw.

That's true and IMO that's what he should do. Why risk throwing away a 1-0 lead? It's basically this situation:

A - If you don't declare, the chances of a series victory are 95%.
B - If you declare, the chances of a 2-0 win are 60%, chances of drawing the series are 40%.

Which would you go for?

Man this rain is so annoying!
I canceled my plans for the evening after Aus declared hoping to watch a good game but I should have known better

It works for him but not the fan. That's the reason his success rate as a captain is so high. Everyone talks about how analytical he is with his decisions. But you gotta admit it takes the fun out of the game from spectator and fan POV. Would there be any excitement in this match if Clarke had gone on for another hour or two so a draw was guaranteed? Bc you know that's exactly what Misbah would've done to protect his 1-0 lead.

And I also understand his reasons; he knows that the phase our cricket is going through right now, we have a lot more to lose from a loss than we have to gain from a potential win. But all that doesn't change the fact that he is a defensive captain.

So in your opinion Clarke should not have declared, even though it created all this excitement among all us fans of cricket? I understand that he is essentially lowering his chances of winning the series by declaring, but it is also giving him a chance to go for another victory, and isn't that what any sport is all about?

I'm with Hashmist on this one.

Australia have always played to win, I still remember that test against SriLanka when we had 100 odd to get in 20 overs or so but we didn't even try to secure a result by trying out the first couple of batsmen and going after the bowlers. That,s the difference between us and them. That is why they're (Aus, Eng etc) usually ranked No 1 and we're scraping the depths of the 5th or 6th positions.

I think we're on the same page now.

Of course it's exciting for the spectator. But it's not always the right decision. In this case, I think it was a brave decision and not the wrong one for Australia. For Pakistan in the first 6 months after the spot fixing scandal, it wouldn't have been the right decision.

By the way, the only times you could possibly critisise Misbah for being defensive is in those first 6 months (against SA and then NZ). All test matches after that we have either won or Misbah couldn't have done anything (in his captaincy) to force a result.

WI have played OK in this series.

A bit like the t20 & ODI's, they keep coming back at Australia and it is good to see. Their fight (with far less talent, $$$, facilities etc) puts India to shame.

So far they are about a "C" grade overall. But a strong showing (win or draw) in the final test could raise them up to a "B" r "B+".

If they fold in the last test however then they will crush signs of hope & improvement.

Well done to Roach also, loved him when he came to Oz in 2009 & good to see him still going strong.

Fidel out, Rampaul in for next test IMO.

They were half a chance. My money would have been on Oz but if Bravo & Sammy got them close, with Shiv (capable of a 57 ball hundred !) up their sleeve a succesful chase wasn't entirely out of the question.

Like Mikey holding said after the game it was good to see both team trying to go for the win. Conditions in W.I are usually pretty difficult in regards to scoring quickly and providing exciting cricket, its more of a war of attrition but its good to see both skippers tried to some how force a win.

Lets hope the 3rd test produces a positive win one way or another.

why is this in equipment?
