West Indies vs India | 4th T20I | Lauderhill, Florida | 6th August, 2022 | Match Discussion

West Indies head into the Florida leg of the T20I series with the task of turning around a 1-2 scoreline deficit. Despite the hosts trailing in the series, there is an air of positivity attached to their T20 side. The two openers - Brandon King and Kyle Mayers - have found some form, notching up a fifty each. Obed McCoy's variations peppered with his hit-the-deck skills and left-arm angle have troubled the Indian batters. Meanwhile, Akeal Hosein has given them the required control and wicket-taking option.

The West Indies still have a defect or two to tackle. One of them is the engine room of the batting unit - Nicholas Pooran, Shimron Hetmyer and Rovman Powell - hasn't been able to pull its weight. In fact the trio has combined to score just 136 runs between them. Especially against a side like India, who have lost only two of their last 21 T20Is while chasing, West Indies need its batting unit to fire collectively.

India too would go into the fourth game with an eye on a couple of issues that have rocked their boat in the series. Avesh Khan struggled to adjust to the slower/two-paced nature of the wickets in the Caribbean. Unlike a couple of other Indian pace bowlers, Avesh hasn't been able to vary his pace. Shreyas Iyer's run of modest scores is another cause of concern. Iyer's hoick sans conviction against McCoy's shortish ball in the second T20Is was an indicator of a cricketer low on confidence. The Indian think tank though have shown enough faith in Iyer so far and he could end up getting a couple more chances.

On the brighter side, Arshdeep Singh has showcased clarity of thought with the ball in different situations to put his hat in the ring for T20 World Cup selection. His team-mate, Suryakumar Yadav, gave another demonstration of his ability to take the responsibility of spearheading the chase with a 44-ball 76 in the third game.

When: West Indies vs India, 4th T20I, Aug 6, 10.30 AM local; 8 PM IST

Where: Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground, Lauderhill, Florida

Team News

West Indies: The hosts could be tempted to go in with an unchanged side. The one option is to pick Keemo Paul as he has found some success at the ground with his brand of cutters. If they want to tinker with the batting unit, then Shamarh Brooks could get a look in

India: Rohit Sharma had to retire hurt in the third game due to a back spasm. But he later said in the post-match presentation: "At the moment, it's okay. We've got a few days till the next game, hopefully it should be okay." Avesh's place could be under scrutiny but with Harshal Patel laid low by a rib problem, he could get another opportunity. The alternative route is to pick another spinner.

What they said:

"Here as well, a lot of credit goes to him and Rahul Dravid for the way they have got the team together and making sure a lot of positive mindset comes in and players are feeling secure; they are not looking over their shoulder; making sure they are getting ample chances; they are getting told as well if they are not playing, and that is something which is commendable," Hardik Pandya after the third T20I.

Squads:

West Indies Squad: Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Nicholas Pooran(c), Rovman Powell, Shimron Hetmyer, Devon Thomas(w), Jason Holder, Dominic Drakes, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Obed McCoy, Odean Smith, Keemo Paul, Shamarh Brooks, Romario Shepherd, Hayden Walsh

10:03 local: It's been raining on and off in Lauderhill and that has delayed the toss today. Hopefully, it'll not be a lengthy delay

Toss Delayed

Cricket as a sport can't develop further, if ****** venues in USA are chosen. 2016 series between these 2 teams at the same venue was an absolute disgrace due to multiple reasons (including weather). Yet they chose to play over there.

Can't they toss inside stadium.. such a waste of time..

The covers have been removed, we could be in for some action in a while. As we wait for the cricket, news filtering in is that Harshal Patel is set to miss the Asia Cup and could be a doubtful starter for the upcoming T20 World Cup. He is learnt to be suffering from side strain and cannot be considered in the squad for the continental championship, the team for which will be announced on Monday

West Indies have won the toss and have opted to field

Good to see Jadeja being dropped. Hopefully India plays Deepak Chahar at 7 instead of Jadeja in Australia especially vs teams which have a number of left handed batsman.

In Asia Cup(UAE), Jaddu might do fine.

Jadeja will be in playing XI , he will not be dropped , no matter where you are playing.

Samson and Hooda are two typical Dravid picks in the team. He's always rated Samson quite highly.

I think in T20 World cups, out of Hooda and Jadeja, only one should play.

Against teams that have quite a few left handers like Windies or NZ, Hooda should play and against teams that have mostly right handers like Pak, Jadeja should play. Ofcourse when Hooda plays, he should bat at 4-5 and Jadeja would bat at 6-7.

Obed McCoy this series:

2nd T20I: 6/17 - best figures for WI in T20Is
4th T20I: 2/66 - most expensive figures for WI in T20Is

WI 18 in first 8 balls , they need to keep getting gig hits here , this is a big target

IND 191/5 (20)
WI 132 (19.1) CRR: 6.89
India won by 59 runs

Easy as it gets!

India took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series after beating the West Indies by 59 runs in the fourth T20I of the five-match series at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill, Florida.

Chasing a total of 192, the West Indies were skittled out for a paltry total of 132. Earlier, Rishabh Pant played a brisk knock of 44 off 31 balls as India went on to post a total of 191 for five against West Indies.

Pant anchored India's innings after Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav had given India a flying start against the West Indies.

Rohit Sharma scored 33 off 16 before being cleaned up by Akeal Hosein, while Suryakumar Yadav was trapped LBW by Alzarri Joseph for 24 off 14. Axar Patel played a quickfire knock of 20 off 8 balls as India went on to finish their innings on a high.

Why was Avesh Mom? Hmm weird

Good team performance this, that’s what we need!

Good performance.

Must say, India has got amazing depth. The idea of playing a second team and resting 6-7 names from the first XI seems to be working pretty well for India( except that SL t20 tour where due to COVID, Bhuvi was batting at 6).

West Indies vs India, 5th T20I

India have won the toss and have opted to bat

West Indies (Playing XI): Shamarh Brooks, Shimron Hetmyer, Nicholas Pooran(c), Devon Thomas(w), Jason Holder, Odean Smith, Keemo Paul, Dominic Drakes, Obed McCoy, Hayden Walsh, Rovman Powell

India (Playing XI): Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Hardik Pandya(c), Deepak Hooda, Dinesh Karthik(w), Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, Avesh Khan, Ravi Bishnoi, Arshdeep Singh

Nic Pooran: We wanted to bat first but that's fine. We have four changes. Brooks, Walsh, Odean Smith and Keemo Paul have come in. We have to prepare for the WC. This is a fresh group and India is a great team as well. The venue was small at St. Kitts and hence Walsh wasn't included. But we know when we do need a spin option, we have them.

Hardik Pandya: We want to bat. We saw how the wicket slowed down yesterday. We want to bat on a fresher wicket. We are like we are not playing at Miami. 99 percent of the fans are supporting India. No matter what happens, we have set some standards for the Indian cricket team. We need to go out there and showcase our skill set. Obviously, the coach, the captain and senior members have done some tremendous job. 4 changes to the team.

IND 135/3 (14.3) CRR: 9.31

Play stopped due to lightning - all happening!

Ok Sanju done, cut straight to his off stump off Smith delivery.. edit: it seems he's beaten by pace..

Iyer with this 64 is ahead of Samson as far as selection for Asia Cup is concerned. Hooda is also ahead of Samson.

Both Axar and D Hooda are as good if not better option than Jadeja in this format.

IND 188/7 (20)

WI 100 (15.4)

India won by 88 runs

positives from thsi series

no 1 - axar hitting abilities.
no 2 - pant valuable knock in 4th t20 is perhaps gonna be the template of the future.
no 3- high strike rate , no emphasis on avg working well
no 4- rohit proving once again he is the best captain - tried avesh in last over and keeps faith in him. avesh delivers next match . more security for youngsters
no 5- sky and ayer have almost cemented their places in the t20 setup
no 6 -sampson given a long rope and performing ok. his kin dof batting ability suits aussie t20 and he will be a vlauable backup as covid and injuries means most team need a good pool of 20 players minimum to choose from
no 7 -arshdeep cements his place for t20 wc imo

india ready to be asian champs unless shaheen -azam combo throw a curveball
