The verdict:

SC declares NA deputy speaker’s ruling unconstitutional.
National Assembly has been restored.
PM’s advice to dissolve National Assembly declared null and void.
SC orders President Arif Alvi to convene NA session on April 9.
NA to hold voting on no-confidence motion on Saturday at 10 am.

So what are the options left now for IK and PTI?

Here is one from reports:

Following the Supreme Court decision PTI mulls dissolving the Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkwa Assemblies.

It is also likely that all the MNAs of the PTI to resign from the National Assembly.

IK is out of options now. The Election Commission will announce holding by elections for the vacant PTI seats.

IK has massive public support leading into next elections. If elections are held within 6 months or in a year's time its no issue that the IK will come back with massive power.

What would be unfortunate however is that in the next few months expect the following to happen.
1. NAB to be dissolved by majority house in Parliament (sad but this is why opposition have united this is NRO 2)
2. Cancellation of overseas Pakistani voting and EVMs
3. Cases built up against IK on filmsy charges that would be upheld by LHC and then the matter would take forever in supreme court to be resolved
4. Nawaz Sharif to return to Pak and they fly back to UK before next elections this time with Maryam

The last and the one I fear the most is that in the next few months we would end up taking some decisions that would impact Pakistan's security in long term. For example we might give bases to US or halt/limit CPEC projects or worse we would settle on Kashmir.

Rest assured the opposition is shameless and would hold absolutely no grudge in putting these actions in play.

Accept the fact that he will be pakistans first ever pm to lose the peoples confidence.

Now it depends if opposition goes with article 6 agaisnt him. If it ever looks like the verdict will come against him, either stay in the country and face death penalty or run away overseas live with them.

If article 6 goes ahead and the verdict is different, than just do campaign for election that will happen in 1.5 years time

The bolded part ain't true. As things stand PTI won 155 NA seats by far the most popular party on vote bank and numbers.

Your statement would only be true if PTI loses NA seats in next general elections.

Musharraf was wise to resign on August 19, 2018 even though he knew the consequences of the upcoming PPP and PML N rule. IK is now stubbornly fighting a battle he is going to lose.

Just heard All PTI members are going to resign.

IK won't run. He is born fighter and will fight with everything he has. The public will support him all the way.

No options but to resign and hope the ECP holds elections instead of bi-elections. So far, it is only downhill for IK from here. Indeed, a horrible day in Pakistan’s history.

Spin it any way you want to.

Losing vonc menas you lost the confidence of thenpeople as na members vote accorsing to their constiuentcy....

Imran khan right now reminds me of the shawnshank redemption warden who at the end had no options left and decides to lock himself in the room..

Not spinning it mate. Imagine 1 party making up 45% of NA whilst 12 parties make up other 55% of NA. This doesn't mean that the strongest party has lost people's confidence. That's just an idiotic analogy.

1.5 years? So all that talk of having early elections was just talk?

What I would advocate IK do is fire Bajwa tonight. He is still Prime Minister until Saturday.

It would be a massive political blunder. IK should simply just sway his public power in front of these power hungry crooks for them to realise that its ultimately the public that decides everything.

Not a bad idea, however they want to put him in jail. They know they cant beat him. And they will not hold early elections, they will drag the parliament till next year.

It would be a massive political blunder.

Why? He has the right to do so. And that will get rid of the selected narrative.

I say IK should just sit in the opposition and let Shahbaz, Bilawal, Zardari, Fazlu rule for a while now. Give the people what they want.

They will just blame IK for last 4 years.. blame game is only thing that is consistent among South Asian politics.

I don't think there is a strong case for article 6.

He did make lose valuable time of the parliament with this saga but I think that's far as it will go.

Easy.

Let the theives loot and run down Pakistan until Aug 2023.

Sweep the elections and hang them for treason later.

This isnt a bad outcome for Pakistan, only will have a tough year.

If PAkistanis think inflation is high now, wait 6 months under the leadership of thieves. :)))

That will ensure that IK and PTI will be an history. Even if he successfully fires COAS (which is doubtful as most countries/courts don't allow PM to take big decisions when he is facing NCM) the next COAS will not look favorably towards what was done to his predecessors. There is no way Pakistan Army will cede that kind of power to an elected PM.

That is the right thing to do. I don't know why the opposition would like to rule now. It is a terrible time for most government around the world. Only reason they may want to do is, take lots of popular decisions like subsidies, free schemes, etc and then announce the election when they think the IK/PTI is down. They can also get rid of all their cases and bring some new ones in IK/PTI. Whatever it is, for neutrals it is a popcorn time

How and when did he lose people's confidence? You were seeing the people pour into his rallies throughout the last month no?

And then there was the might of opposition against him as well with their pathetic crowds. The difference couldn't be more evident. He is pulling crowds unlike anything.

If there is one thing, this saga has done, it's given him way way more support than before. He himself in on 2011-15 level of popularity and with PTI fully established as a party, the opposition is going to have a hard time.

And PTI is the only party that has presence across the country. Nobody else comes close.

The opposition will now make sure that Imran Khan is in jail come next elections. Huge win for the opposition. I do not see Khan surviving now.

The other generals hate it when the chief takes an extension. Their are rumors Bajwa wants another extension. If he simply appoints the most senior general as the next chief the other generals might be ok with it imo. More importantly the opposition has been calling him "selected" for years. This should get rid of those accusations. Nawaz was a coward who fired Musharraf while he was in air. IK should fire Bajwa to his face.

PTI needs to run as anti establishment party. Anti other political parties (which are family based except for the Mullahs), anti establishment, anti media, anti judiciary. So even if the courts disallow it it makes him stronger for the next election.

They should file something in courts to start cases based on the foreign intervention/local collusion and have a commission for investigating all those involved. bring all the evidence they claim they had or got from agencies, etc. gather that in 24 hrs before its too late and they can't access the same agencies, etc. once out of power.

More than center, I think they'll have a bigger issue in Punjab. reason is you need to win Punjab to make govt in cetner. with the way funds are distributed, province has huge share and opposition / new govt can take those funds and do lots of hand-outs / project kick-offs,etc. as there is leftover funds not yet spent in the next 12 months.

plus they got aleem group, tareen group already on their side, so this will make it very hard for PTI to win punjab next time.

in Sind, its almost impossible to break through PPP outside of KHI/HYD until we get rid of feudal system.
Balochistan doesnt have much impact / seats.

just KP alone won't cut it.

all this is aside from the potential changes to election rules, possible cases against PTI, etc.

They'll just borrow more like before, ever increasing the debt and take a cut whilst they're at it, like leeches. The common man will feel as though things will get cheaper. Robbing Peter to pay Paul, or in this case robbing the future generation of their wealth through debt servicing

This is a naive suggestion. The SC was not interested in even looking at the documents related to foreign intervention. What will the lower courts do?

The Americans have made another example of what happens when someone refuses to listen to them.

something did happen in panama case too. while i understand right now one feels SC is being one-sided, if you think logically, they dealt with case on merit and Govt/PTI made some mistakes in how they executed the whole thing as well.
e.g. docs didn't have signature. did speaker even attend the NSC meeting. how could he make decision so quickly which made it seem like pre-planned/staged. deputy speaker read out the statement which was statement of speaker - means pre-written - he could have at least not said his name, or made it it his own statement. maybe they could have asked for commission and investigation before deciding if no confidence motion could be dismissed or not.

1. Just wait and watch, and hope he doesnt get disqualified for the actions he carried out on April 3rd.
2. The incompetent coalition will collapse on their own and infact will have to bear the blame of collapsing economy on themselves.

IK would have been much stronger if all fracas of 3rd April hadnt happened, he has just weakened himself. BUT
He is still the strongest leader in Pakistan, provided he remains eligible now.

Agree.

Do you really think the thieves & corrupt establishment will just let him sit in opposition until election time knowing full well how popular he is? They're out to destroy him & PTI, only saving grace is they will probably fall out amongst themselves.

Agreed. The government legal team overall looked very weak. The only justification they provided is that the Supreme court cannot intervene in parliament matters. Instead of that they should have emphasized on horse trading and how suddenly all the other parties came together just to remove him. Also how they were agreed on Imran's resignation. The team should have dealt with more evidence that the government has mandate and they are still the most popular party. Unfortunately the government legal team looked very weak in all the week's proceedings. Even such a renowned lawyer Naeem Bukhari was unaware that who were present in the Nsc meeting. While at first he stated that it was presented by Moeed Yousuf later the court identified that he was not even present in the meeting plus the foreign minister was also not present on the meeting.

Imran has no option and come to the streets. Can see a revolution forming, he will play the " Pakistan sold out to foreign policy " card and the people will follow him. Whilst the corrupt PDM will face the raft of further increase in inflation, fuel prices going through the roof, with this their normal back stabbing will start and hopefully they will fall apart.

Their are reports of drone strikes in Afghanistan. Whose airspace would have been used?

Resigning from NA will be a huge huge blunder at this stage. ECP has already told SC that they need 6-7 months to hold election & SC kind of accepted their reasoning. This means, no by elections on 100+ seats. It will be merged with general election which is expected to be in 6 months time. Moreover, according to the constitution, assembly can continue to function even if 340 out of 342 members resign. Opposition will ask one of the allied parties (with a couple of seats) to take the role of opposition leader & they will pass all the bills including electoral reforms, nominate their own caretaker setup without any opposition.
IK has practically nothing to gain from resign card but all to lose. I genuinely hope he will get better advise this time.

Apparently even Pro PTI journalists are saying resigning will be a big blunder. If PTI resigns, the opposition will have 200 seats in the NA and then can do any legislation unchallenged, whereas if PTI stays in the NA, they can still be a counter force and can stop the opposition from doing whatever they want.

I agree, the opposition can just pass whatever they want then. He needs to become the Leader of the Opposition. And to focus on the next election.

This. No more emotional blunders. There is no last ball in politics. It's a continuous struggle. IK should accept the defeat for now, sit on opposition benches. Bargain his powers as opposition leader to avoid article 6 proceedings & upcoming references against him. Set aside his ego & play a positive role in electoral reforms & ensure PDM does not temper with next elections. We will desperately need a very very strong opposition in coming months.

PML and PPP "perform" well in elections when they are in power and they are master of rigging in election , they have decade long investment in the local and provincial establishment for this very purpose. IK can still beat them if election are conducted fairly .

Prime Minister Imran Khan is widely known for two things: he is unpredictable and he knows how to get attention. For instance, right when the opposition parties were celebrating the victory of democracy and Constitution after the country’s top court decision, he was mulling over resigning en masse from the National Assembly; a move discussed in detail but countered with the suggestion of doing what he did best: sit on the opposition benches instead of giving a walkover to the other side.

Despite the judicial setback on Thursday night, many believe that the prime minister can still mount a political comeback through public support provided how he deals with the Supreme Court’s decision nullifying his unconstitutional moves. The confirmation that he will continue to fight till the last ball came from his Twitter account soon after the court decision. The question, however, was if he still is the phenomenon that once was before the top court decision and if the nation would witness more criticism on the establishment for staying “neutral” amid political turmoil in the coming days.

Another question looming large on the political horizon after the court decision of declaring National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Khan Suri’s ruling of rejecting no-confidence motion against the premier “unconstitutional” was about the political future of Imran and his party, especially, after his narrative of foreign intervention in the country’s internal matters was not entertained by the highest court of the country.

“Politically, it’s a devastating blow to IK [Imran Khan] and the PTI as their unconstitutional actions have been nullified,” PML-N Senator Mushahid Hussain Sayed shared with The Express Tribune. “While IK often acts as a gambler without stakes, he is well aware of the ground realities: he has lost the political battle.”

Sayed, who heads Senate’s Defence Committee, said: “His [PM Imran’s] political future depends on how he responds to this setback: accept defeat, gracefully, after the Supreme Court has spoken, or continue to act as a spoiler.”

The veteran politician said if PM Imran accepts the former option, he can “live to fight another day” in the coming political round – the general elections. “Acting as a spoiler, after he’s lost the political battle, the numbers game in parliament, and the legal battle in the Supreme Court, would be a recipe for disaster for him and his party,” Sayed said.

Read Shehbaz terms Imran's play 'unconstitutional power-grab'

On the SC decision, Sayed said upholding the Constitution and the rule of law was a landmark decision while recalling that “undoubtedly the most important judicial decision in Pakistan’s history since the historic 1993 decision of the Supreme Court to restore Mian sahib [Nawaz Sharif] after his wrongful dismissal by President Ghulam Ishaq Khan”.

“I think the PTI and Imran Khan retain a critical mass of public support so they will be a potent force in Pakistani politics at least in the short term,” Pakistan Institute of Legislative Development and Transparency (PILDAT) President Ahmed Bilal Mehboob said, adding that the long-term future will depend upon their showing in the coming general election.

“It remains to be seen how Imran Khan & his party deals with this judicial setback and possible setbacks in the National Assembly on Saturday and in the Punjab Assembly in the next few days,” the PILDAT president said, adding that a battle of public narratives had already started and it would now gain momentum.

“Imran Khan has generally been an effective political communicator & connects to the masses; it will be seen whether this magic works in the days to come,” Mehboob shared. Another key question is about his relations and narrative about the establishment, he said, adding that there were signs of “criticism emanating from PM Imran’s supporters against the establishment”.

Days after PM Imran pulled out his big surprise by advising President Arif Alvi to dissolve the National Assembly, which he did but only to be restored in less than a week’s time, his party leaders revealed that he was planning something unpredictable again and expected to announce it on April 8 (today). When asked to comment on PM and his party’s political future, PTI Senator Faisal Javed said that the premier would announce that today as “he has called a meeting of the federal cabinet and is scheduled to address the nation on the post-judicial ruling”.

In a single stroke, the political observers believe that the top court has buried the “doctrine of necessity” and blocked the way for those thinking to abrogate the Constitution with gleeful chuckles in the future. They feel that the decision would haunt PM Imran for a long time just like an old sin casts a long shadow.

Lol, Imran Khan in jail? That will never happen. You needed an entire opposition to cooperate to get rid of him, and this will make him even stronger next time. Soon you will see the polls and things will be clearer.

And the opposition, consisting of people having major cases against them, in reality hate eachother. The thieves got together to just to get rid of IK.

And remember when IK only had 30-35 seats in NA he made life really tough for gov. Now he has some 135-140 and he will not let them even breathe. And come the next election he will get more supporters, there is no doubt about that.

In reality this is a win-win situation for IK.

And lastly, just wait for IK's speech tonight. You never know what this man can come up with :))

IK has massive public support leading into next elections. If elections are held within 6 months or in a year's time its no issue that the IK will come back with massive power.

Did you do some sort of survey or poll which reveled Imran Khan has support in the next elections? Can you share the results of this with us as well lol. He has no support. I'd be surprised if he managed to capture 20-30 seats in the next elections.

Also, let's not forget opposition could still pursue further cases against him which could potentially result in him being barred from holding public office.

He should retire and go back to England. He's done.

Just heard All PTI members are going to resign.

That doesn't change anything. In fact, its such a stupid move because it hands all over the power to the opposition. There will be re-elections on those seats and some of them (if not most) will be won by the opposition giving them 2/3 majority in the house to do as they wish.

That would be a pathetic move by PTI if they did this.

No options but to resign and hope the ECP holds elections instead of bi-elections. So far, it is only downhill for IK from here. Indeed, a horrible day in Pakistan’s history.

Horrible day because the law has been upheld? lol you lot are funny.

Are we writing a new Ertugrul or what? This seems more like a fiction than reality.

Should impose a national emergency and round up all the traitors and thieves. This sham system needs a cleansing. Awaam is fed up and would support him

I'm not sure you understand how any of this works.

Imran Khan broke the law with the actions he pulled in the Parliament. Supreme Court has already given their verdict that his actions were against the law. He can be tried for breaking the constitution and held guilty for this that would mean he will barred from holding public office.

Can we start with Imran Khan and his party then?

Imran: "Mien in sab ko rulao ga" -> He meant his own supporters LOL

He wasn't even a respondent to the case so how did he break the laws? It's the deputy speaker and president that would take the blame.

Ah dude the opposition has been crying for 3 years. Even in court, Shahbaz was begging ke 'Allah de wastay' sanu chorh doh. Everyone has their day and the opposition finally got something to celebrate after 3 years

PPP’s Jam Karim is still a free man after killing Jukhio, then fleeing to Dubai and then coming to cast his vote in Pakistan. What a sham!

No suo moto by the SC!

Do you know how the legal system in Pakistan works? The family of the deceased forgave him. There is nothing the Supreme Court can do. Stop crying please and at least understand the democratic and legal system of Pakistan before making comments because you come off looking rather silly otherwise

Face the vote of NC. If he loses, sit in the opposition and be a constructive opposition.

Resigning, dissolving assemblies is like throwing the toys out like a petulant child.

I'm not sure you understand how any of this works.

Imran Khan broke the law with the actions he pulled in the Parliament. Supreme Court has already given their verdict that his actions were against the law. He can be tried for breaking the constitution and held guilty for this that would mean he will barred from holding public office.

Lol, I know how it works. Nothing will happen.

Do you even know how much support he has got among people?

Then wait for elections to happen. He can't demand that elections happen as per his wish.

The house has more than a year left, if opposition can get the majority, they have the right to rule.

That is one of the options he has got. Let's see what he decides for. His speech later tonight will be very important.

I know how it works and we all know what the widow said in her video message. She was threatened with death if she did not pardon her husband’s killers. The same SC backed down in the case of Madina Masjid demolition when mullahs threatened of violence. Very gutsy and unbiased!

According to PTI logic everyone is corrupt and sold out unless they form part of PTI in which case they are sadiq and ameen. Get over it man. Justice was delivered and rightly so. Stop whining and crying.

The desperation that he is showing for early elections, it doesn't point to a bright picture. He wants to use foreign interference as an agenda while the agenda is fresh because as time will pass by, people will forget about it and won't be thus influenced.

I don't know how much support he has got but as per polls, I don't see much among native Pakistanis.

If he has the support, then he should go with whatever parliament decides and wait for the next election.

And how have you come to this conclusion?

It will be such a drama if speaker gives another ruling against the voting tomorrow citing article 5A and 95.

Then the case will go back to supreme court again. And he will have to defend himself and he will bring in the letter and this time SC will probably look into that as well.

Rememter what Yusuf Raza Gilani did when he didn't follow CJ's decision and didn't write the letter. This time speaker can do the same. Gilani said he will follow the constitution and not what CJ decided.

Or Imran and all his NA members can resign and how will they go for elections in those areas?

Lol. SC won't even take the case forget about ruling.

People are coming up with weird fantasies.

Ok, you tell me. What will happen if the Speaker doesn't show up or he gives another ruling against the vote?

He can but that will be contempt of court so SC will start proceeding against him. It won't be the same case as before since this time, a verdict is already in place.

really the best option is for Imran & PTI to sit in opposition & wait for the next elections, from a global economic pov it's not the best time to be in govt as rampant inflation is a global phenomenon & more than likely we will see a global recession, Pakistan will be disproportionately effected negatively. Just wait for the new govt to implode due to the inevitable disunity.

This will give time for PTI to regroup and actually formulate some decent policies; assuming that there will be relatively free & fair elections and that the Establishment will allow Imran to continue his political career.

ISLAMABAD:
Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid said on Friday that he had advised Prime Minister Imran Khan to resign from office three months ago, and would advise him to do the same today too.

The minister, alluding to the joint opposition, claimed that he would fight against these "thieves” till his last breath.

“The country cannot be run alongside these thieves,” he reiterated, stating that he had advised the premier to resign yesterday and would recommend it again today.

Rashid claimed that “external powers” wanted to take Pakistan’s independence away and that temporary victory was not the real goal as everyone had now been “exposed”.

The home minister was referring to PM Imran’s claim that foreign powers were backing the opposition’s no-trust motion against him.

Rashid hoped for “good” decisions to emerge, adding that PM Imran would address the nation in the evening.

The minister’s remarks came after a landmark unanimous ruling from the Supreme Court, which set aside National Assembly Deputy Speaker Qasim Suri’s ruling to dismiss the no-trust resolution against Prime Minister Imran Khan and the subsequent dissolution of the lower house of parliament by President Arif Alvi on the premier’s advice.

The 5-0 ruling ordered parliament to reconvene on Saturday (tomorrow), no later than 10:30 am, saying that the session could not be prorogued without the conclusion of the no-trust motion against PM Imran.

“It is declared that the resolution was pending and subsisting at all times and continues to so remain pending and subsisting.”

The words used by supporters are very similar to what used by their candidates. It almost feels like PTI supporters see running some kind of propaganda.
