Thats great.

I was a hardcore programmer and soln arct in US and UK for last 6 years. But finally moved back to India and joined here as a consultant.

So no more programming and long hours. Its just doing reviews and sharing best practices and most importantly i have plenty of time to enjoy.

Some of those time are spent on PP. :P

very impressive, alybaba. from your choice of words, I gather that you just got promoted to the VP position. if I'm correct in my assumptions, then congrats.

if you don't mind, could you please post a little bit more about your background (academic and professional)?

I'm very interested in a finance career - particularly in asset management/investment research. I'm going to apply for my MBA this year and (hopefully) start next year. my background is a bachelors in computer engineering. and currently, I'm working in a software developerish capacity with equity traders.

so, if you could give me your thoughts/advice on the best way of making the transition from my current position to a finance position, I'd really appreciate it.

thanks.
I apologize Mr. Tarar for getting back to you so late.

My background is currently just a Bachelor of Commerce from McGill University. I joined the firm in 2006 as an analyst, and by stroke of luck got promoted very quickly to Associate and later leading to the VP position. However, I am no longer with that firm and have moved to a larger firm as an Associate. The general career path in finance is Analyst - Associate - VP - Managing Director, so it was step down in my title, but my salary is higher and I see better deals, so I'm fine with it.

For you I would highly suggest the CFA program. Since you have an engineering degree, prospective employers know that you have the quantitative skills, but you need to prove you have finance knowledge. While I know you are going to do an MBA, a CFA would help you even more since it is specifically designed for people interested in Asset Management/Investment Management.

At this point you must be starting your MBA very soon, so I would suggest you become very involved with the various stock market clubs at your business school to show you have real interest in the field and are not just trying to make more money. Go to all events where prospective employers are present, introduce yourself and have a few conversations. A summer internship focused on investments during your MBA is also very critical in order to be able to transition successfully to a new career in Investment Management.

Hope that helps.

I'm 21 and I live in Birmingham. I reckon that comes under Warwickshire
you must have cricket clubs in your region where u could join, leg spinner is a eye opening talent, so join a club and attend practice sessions and try to impress, the more talented u r the higher teams you'l play in, e.g clubs generally have first team, second team, third team, so the better u r the higher team you'l get picked for, as for professional ranks unless your a brilliant talent your just to old to make it, at 21 most young cricketers have been at clubs for over a decade coming through the youth ranks, unless like i said youve got outstanding ability it's to late :imran
