It’s not necessarily ego, it’s a conflict of interest between the two positions - the issue is everyone expects PCB chairman to be the man in charge , and he’s appointed to run the affairs of Pakistan cricket. And then the CEO thinks he’s there for the same reason too.
For that to work you either need a quiet guy like Ehsan Mani who carries on dealing with accounting and budgeting , leaving cricket decision making to the CEO. In the case of Rameez, he’s a former cricketer and you can’t have him there just to do spreadsheets and negotiating with third party contractors on doing the painting and decorating at Gaddafi Stadium, or attending sales pitches for upgrading the gym equipment at the Lahore academy.
WK can add value to the PCB with his international contacts, it was not easy to convince teams like England, Australia, NZ, South Africa to come to Pakistan and him being on board definately played a factor.
However there were mishaps in the PCB in the Ehsan Mani Wasim Khan tenure
- The PSL Bio Secure Bubble Fiasco
- Decision to appoint Misbah and Waqar as coaches
- The DRS issue
If WK was asked to highlight his achievements, he will pinpoint the following
- Getting teams like Australia, England, South Africa, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe to come to Pakistan
- Revamping the Domestic Structure
- Successfully hosting the Domestic Season when Covid was a problem
- Successfully finishing PSL 7 after the initial fiasco
- Successfully Finishing PSL 6 after the Covid crisis in 2020
But it also depends on whether WK will accept any post other than CEO or a lower pay. His family also returned back home to the UK and that might be an issue as well. I ideally would have liked him to serve for atleast another 3 years with the PCB under a more energetic dynamic PCB Chairman. Ehsan Mani still had the final power and authority on decisions in the PCB and there were reports WK was frustrated by his slow decision making
