What's new

What is bothering you right now?

It is true, though. Bravadoes aside. All I see is a wisp of some skill here, a sliver of some useless talent there. A collection of incongruent little things that translates to nothing.

No vision. No insight. No idea where to go. I deserve it.

I just feel so.. wasted.

I have no idea what to study/what I want to study/what I want to be doing 10 years from now. This Masters application is quite literally killing me.

And I hate to be a whiner about it, truly. It's just that its like drowning in some black sea at this point. I've rarely felt so utterly lost.

What was your bachelors degree?

What was your bachelors degree?

Is. Final year.

Intl Relations, Pol. Science.

IR is a fascinating field with a zillion subfields: Conflict resolution, diplomacy, global governance, security analysis, IPE, Intl law, historical IR, etc...

but it has been taught too 'generally' to us, if you know what I mean..

For the life of me, how can I narrow down precisely what I want to study in masters .. it is beyond me. And such generalities don't fly at this level.

I felt like this for about 100 times after my exhaustive spells of duty here in Medical college. We are treated even worse than the cleaners here. Just hang on keep doing what you are good at..

Thank you, my friend.. I definitely will remember that.. All the best to you with your studies.. (At such points, my dad would always tease me - is se acha daaktar hi banjati xD [would've been better if you'd become a doctor, anyway..]) :)

Any work experience in any of those fields ? Have you read up on any of them ? Know anyone working in those ?

Also surely you must be interested or at least more instinctual about choosing one over another.

None. :sigh:

I'm interested in Peace-building (part of conflict resolution). And IPE. But again, studies here tend to be a bit generalised..

But know what.. Enough whining on my part. I'm going to meet a few profs. And maybe they'll help me out. Yeah. That's what I'll try to do.

Don't really have much experience in this regard as I've just started my bachelors in Economics and Accounting, but if you have til the end of this academic year, then you can get some work experience, network etc., just find out what you want to do.

Here's my two cents on this and since I've experienced something similar I know what I am talking about.

Going for a Master's degree right after graduation and without any work experience whatsoever is completely and utterly pointless.

After your bachelors degree, get out and get some work experience. Explore different field (sub-fields) and find out what is out there. That is the only way you will learn what you want to do and what you want to stay away from.

It took me a good 5-7 years of work experience to completely understand what I wanted to do and where I wanted to end up. This than allowed to to draw myself a career map and I could then look at the stuff I needed to add to get to my final goal. This is where a Masters degree comes in because it helps you achieve your goal and is more focused rather than just doing one for the sake of doing one.

Your problem is a necessary negative consequence of having choice. To choose is to renounce and, to a certain degree, most people don't like to renounce for fear of limiting themselves into the wrong choice. So we all harbour fantasies of ''talent'', the idea that there are people out there with a single area of expertise, something that they were always born to do. Truth is that talents are more often than not general skills that can be applied to a vast array of different situations. You are not going to have a single thing you were born to do: if you can see people who give that impression, it's because they made the conscious choice to limit themselves and focus on a particular path. They would probably have been just as good had they focused on something else. Being a jack of all trades is the prerequisite to becoming a master of one trade. Just try not to pressure yourself into thinking that you have to make the right choice and find the one thing you're the best at. Whatever you choose will probably be fine provided you can truly concentrate on it.

I like how in India girls are willing to move to other cities (and even rural areas) for work etc without inhibitions

In Pakistan its not same and the well off educated girls rarely venture outside Islamabad, Karachi, Lahore (and maybe Multan, Pesh, Pindi). Even smaller cities are a no-no so you can forget about goinf to rural areas and doing any service

It's not like there is any will to do it, be it from males or females. A lot easier to print notes in the big cities.

Hope I've helped.

I just have until the end of November to finalise everything and apply for funding in time. But a lot of others have told me as well - going out and talking to professors would help clear my mind..

I had just fought with my mom last night when I made those posts.. And I'm in a much better state of mind currently to acknowledge that time is still on my side, for now. Just have to get the ball rolling now.

I'd agree with you, but I understand before hand that my Masters degree is geared towards further academic involvement, as opposed to going in "professional" services. I don't plan to do a PhD as of yet, but if something suits my fancy, I will consider it - and teaching is probably the domain I am most inclined towards even now.

But I will consider that too. It's just that in order to become a research/teachers assistant (RA/TA), one usually has to be enrolled in grad studies - and both go hand in hand from there. But still thanks for writing that out.. I definitely see the logic of what you're saying as well.

Endy. I swear, it's like you live in my mind at times..

I literally can't thank you enough for that - you're absolutely right. I often write up my 'jack of all trades'-ness as an excuse to not try hard in a specific field. Hard work and talent go hand-in-hand, and whining about it will definitely not make anything easier..

I owe you one, buddy. Truly. *wipes a tear or two*

Uh, my Chem of Wine and Probs and stats test and the fact the I need to apply to Uni ASAP :uakmal

blinding light, since you only have a couple of months, just talk to your professors and see what they have to say. Also remember with the amount of thought and concern that you've out into this, you'll definitely pick the best subject area for yourself.

I'm actually bad at giving advice because I just project my personal experiences and issues on people. But I am really happy to know that this method is useful to at least one persons, probably because we have the same problems.

Well whatever it is, it works :) And that is true too, I think..

The thought of me wanting to retake A levels because I want to get into a better university while I just started university this year. My A level grades were not good enough and was shocked to see them.

What's bothering me is there is nothing bothering me, when there is so much wrong in the world.

same feeling I had in High School junior year. Wanted to repeat the year because I was very determined and motivated to do well since I got a C. Got a slap in the head and was told to use this motivation in the coming years :))

Did you repeat the year? What did you improve your grade to?

I didn't repeat the year. Here repeating the year means reducing your chances to join a decent uni less. I continued and improved my grade. I got A which resulted in a Final B+ which was enough

I'm at Middlesex uni which isn't very good and I'm studying Mathematics. I want to move to a decent uni like Queen Mary, so I'm planning on doing well in 1st year, redo A levels at the same time and transfer to QM to do 1st year again due to different syllabus.

well it will be a bit more Hardwork, good luck.

If you're planning to stay in UK then I can see why you want to get to a better college. But if you're planning to move in the middle east then anything with UK/US written on it is treated as GOLD :))) :)))

UK qualifications are gold dust :))) My mistake this year was not studying ALL of my resources and contents from my books, I skipped quite a few bits which hurt me but I'm gonna rinse everything out now by doing 5 hours of study a day. People who tend to get a bad grade often get top marks when they do it again.

exactly, they get the motivation like now I know about what went wrong. give me a second chance so I can show you I can shine :yk2

a tip: keep your time table simple. I graduated from Open University here in UK. I had like 4-5 courses per semester. So I divided my time like give 1-2 hours per course everyday. It helped me a lot. Most importantly it kept me relaxed knowing I was always ahead of the weekly checkpoints.

Ooo nice nicee, I'm basically going to be studying 1st Year Mathematics at degree level, 2 A level subjects in Maths and Biology. My English A level Syllabus is finished so I'm happy with a C so I'm aiming for A*A*C since results day made me angry.

so you have 3 courses. This should be easy time managing.

Yeah it should be, only thing that bothers me is how others get top grades. Is it because of luck or hard work? Sometimes I feel that even if you study for hours and hours on end for one unit, you might flop the exam based on hard luck.

its all about concentration and focus mate.

you lose focus even if you memorized the whole book you will lose marks. Most students aren't relaxed during Exam week. I used to choke on my math exams every single time from 8th grade until High School. The pressure always got to me and made me bottle my exams. I practiced the whole book twice in Senior High and got 33 out of 100 :afaq which was borderline pass :))) I was so mad at myself and I knew what happened. Thank GOD my parents understood otherwise I would have gotten a mega phainta :yk

That changed in University. I became relaxed because of the time table I was following. I was so calm during Exams and BAM I got B+, A in maths.
I think you are also nervous during Exams which causes to doubt yourself. If this is the case then Relax is the only thing you can do. The best way to Relax is to stop studying and revising 3 hours before the exam. It helps a lot.

Attended Cricket Canada's High Performance Camp. It was led by Rajasthan Royal's coach Zubin Barucha. Didn't do well, in fact I was very poor.

what city you were in ? any new exciting faces u saw? I am here in Alberta.

I'm very new to competitive cricket, so all the faces are new to me :uakmal. Henry Osinde talked about a player from Saskatchewan arriving next week for the non-Ontario camp. We didn't bowl on the pitch, just bowled on grass and did fitness. I failed so hard in fitness. :warne

oh that's okay, you'll be fine one day....start hitting up the gym regularly and quit smoking if you're a smoker.

That freaking decision is botherign from Dharemasena- could have gfot them for 270 max! as it they coulkd still get anythging

Were you having a stroke while typing that out? :sanga

I can't recall. My issue is we struggle to chase and we have been handed an extra 30 to whatever our 4th innings target is by the umpire. That's any thing from an extra 10-20 percent of our potential target

The fact that from September, I will be working from 8 am to 8 pm and will have to study as well.

Bit tricky making small talk with a person you were really close to in the past, don't know if it's better to keep the chat limited or go in depth both have pros and cons

It's bound to happen as you're training but soon enough you will develop quiet nicely in the end god willing

Haha bro I am trying my best, trainers aren't giving proper feedback IMO. Was so supposed to start properly tomorrow but training is continuing.

I had a similar issues, eventually we returned to how we once was. You have to decide if that person is really worth it and I think you should just tell them how you fell bro. There is no harm in doing that. :)

Hopefully you work things out with them in the end, there are some places where they keep you training longer then you need to despite the fact that you are doing a good job just so they delay paying you more money when you start officially!

That's true, i think what holds me back is that the person has not been too fond of going into the deep talk and is a little laid back live in the moment type of person

Hahaha our whole group is being held back though bro!

Trust me saying what you feel is good but just use the correct words. If you care about the person a lot you should make the effort.

Date for my result is getting ridiculously....I am not even that good at studies.............I want to do something different in life that's why I have taken World History in A Levels

oh that's okay, you'll be fine one day....start hitting up the gym regularly and quit smoking if you're a smoker.

Not smoker, but a weekend drinker and a daily fat eater :warne. Fitness will take time, but this was my chance to impress or at least get noticed by the president, admins and the coaches. Today didn't go well either. Former Afghanistan Coach was there, he doesn't really have a say much, he was the only one who saw me do well, others were working with other players when I was doing well and were looking at me when I was failing. Pretty sure now that I won't be part of the practice squad and never mind the team.

Have driving school lessons this Saturday & Sunday, which means waking up early, sitting 5 hours doing nothing, and also missing a lot of the Pakistan game. :(

Had to sell one of my cars, because the lady wife declared it redundant to requirements. I didn't realize how much I would miss it until it was too late. I am not happy right now.

... and then, Azhar's dismissal. Its like when you're having a bowl of ice-cold, sickly sweet kheer, and the last bite has a piece of a bitter almond.

I did, today. Once. A comment about Ramiz's commentary that went unnoticed. The comment that is, not Ramiz's commentary, which never goes unnoticed.

Nostalgic being in a match thread would be like Mohammad Yousuf in a T20. There will be some exquisite gems but it wont satiate anybody due to the infrequency and will mostly go unnoticed

My registration for me to be able to work is taking ages to come through due to certain issues. All my friends have started working already and ive been waiting a month already, likely another month too. Getting extremely bored and feeling abit helpless and frustrated that I am not able to do anything about it.

I posted again today. It was anti-climatic, because everyone ignored it.

There's the Anti-Match Thread thread. Does that count? I bet I have the most posts in that one.

I see. Henceforth, I'll try to stoop to the level of the discussion on the match thread. Like so: "Take a hatrick! NOW! Recall Afridi!"

Don't forget to wrist slit with disconcerting regularity. The most successful method of bloating one's post/quote count.
