What's staggering about Babar is his total lack of impactfulness. While impact is harder to achieve in weak Pakistani batting lineups, isn't it damning that after almost 10 years you can only count on one hand the number of matchwinning knocks ?
Ramiz Raja started Babar's downfall by giving him total control as captain in his idiotic belief that he could manufacture a 21st Century Imran Khan and appointing a dummy coach in Saqlain. Under Ramiz it felt like "Brand Babar" was more important than the team. His fitness also declined during this time.
The only bit of sympathy I have is that there's been multiple PCB chairs alongside a carousel of coaches and selectors making for an unstable environment where players don't know who to trust.
However there's no defence for how he backstabbed Shaheen last year by greedily accepting the captaincy again. That's after Shaheen's public backing of Babar despite his declining form. The T20 WC disaster was karma.
@Xoib is right that only a sustained spell away from Pakistan under proper coaching can salvage what's left of his peak years. However for a County deal, Counties need certainty about a player's availability. PCB must assure them he won't be picked for the inconsequential Bangladesh and West Indies white-ball series this summer.
