Peshawar Zalmi's captain Sammy was giving high marks to Biryani of Karachi.

Punjab's Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was giving high marks to Kebabs of Karachi.

So what is the best food dish of Karachi? Biryani or Kebab? or something else? :inzi

Everyone says Nihari, still not tried it. Might buy it from a local takeaway/restaurant soon hopefully the owners are from Karachi because apparently they make the best Nihari

Are those unique to Karachi? I think you can find that in every city in Pakistan but yeah they do have some of the best biryani joints there.

Honestly depends on person to person.... if you ask Slog, ahmedwaqas92, Arham_PakFan and Sarfarazian92 you might get four different answers from four different Karachiites. We are a city of 20+ million there are bound to be people with different likes and dislikes.

But personally I love our biryani and haven't had anything like it in other parts of Pakistan - though some of you dislike the fact that we put aloo in it :ashwin

I'm a BBQ guy hence I love Ghaffar Kabab House's malai boti, seekh kabab, and chicken fry kabab.

I personally love bun kebab. Maybe because I've always had great biryani wherever I've gone, and while Karachi biryani is obviously high quality, it's not that big of a jump from what I'm used to.

Bun kebab however takes more practice to perfect since you have to put it together quicker, if you do one thing wrong, like wrong type of chutney, it will ruin the whole thing.

Unpopular opinion probably.

I miss Mr. Burger and the Hot n Spicy at Clifton and its rolls the most :(

Well considering your personality I'm in a state of shock that you perfer bun kababs... I took you for a burger sort of a person :afridi

Obviously Biryani (From Karachi) is the GOAT Cusine, nothing even comes close. Furthermore, Biryani without Aloo is basically NOT A BIRYANI so there should be no debate on the matter at all. Only Arrogant fools, serve this heavenly dish without Potatoes :sanga

A very close second for me is Nihari and I particularly enjoy having that every once in a while. A big fan of burns road so I guess me loving Nihari and especially Nalli Nihari is expected.

Also Karachi has the best dishes ever so everyone can :asad2

Its really a toss-up

I'd say a good Karachi biryani is up there. But seeing sarfrazian92's post Id also say that Ghaffar Kabab House's malai boti or fried kabab are unmatchable and leave you salivating for them for days. However I'd say the nihari in Karachi might just beast the rest.

My logic is this:
Biryani is amazing, perhaps GOAT in Karachi but you will find many ATG level biryanis elsewhere in the country and the world. Depending on taste and preference, some might be even better than in Karachi. And a problem is that even in Karachi there isnt a consensus among 2,3 places which are the undisputed best (as there is in kabas - (Ghaffar, Waheed) or nihari - (Javed, Zahid)

But a good Nihari in Karachi really is in a league of its own. Ive never had a nihari anywhere else even remotely at the same level as Javed's or Zahid's. So because of that I'll say it is the best. You can find a biryani of same quality and taste in other cities and countries if you search hard enough. But niharis are nowhere close. My friend from Lahore was blown away by the nihari at Nihari Inn at Boat Basin whereas in Karachi its definitely considered 2nd or 3rd tier

tell me of a few good bun kabab places? Ive never really had em..

what about kata-kat? heard its very good in Karachi

a guy at work from Islamabad absolutely is in love with kata-kat from Noorani Kebab House. Goes there once every 2-3 weeks just for that

Ive never been a fan of the dish persoanlly

Javed Nihari is definitely the best Nihari I've ever had.

Zameer Ansari at Bahadurabad is also good with it's kababs and parathas.Ghaffar is undoubtedly better though.

People say Student Biryani is very good although it's decent, not anything special.I would say Jameels at Dhoraji has better Biryani..

mention the place from where to buy that Biryani and Nihari

Whatever the “best dish” out of Karachi is, it does not match with Lahore :hafeez

Nihari is a weird one, the first one I ever had was great, but then I suggested it with company at a different place and it was really ordinary which was a let down. Not sure a UK takeaway will do it justice, might be best to wait until you can get to a place which has a good reputation for it.

If you want Nihari and are in North-West London, then people swear by Aladin Kebabish in Hendon. Its a place that looks terrible from the outside, but the food is not half bad.

Personally, not a Nihari fan...prefer Haleem.

There was a place in Manchester that was similar called Kabana, no idea if it's still there, but their's was very nice. I haven't been to that place in Hendon but if people swear by it, then it's probably going to be pretty good.

Had some Karachi Pathans prepare Haleem once in Ramadan. It was nasty.

Plus a lot of places don't offer it and the ones who do may just hand over a standard lamb karahi or something, difficult to scout a place where it's a speciality. Tipu Sultan in Brum have it on their menu I might try it there one of the days, KingKhanWC might have had it

Yes I actually tried Nihari last summer but had it for breakfast with some parathas, puris, eggs etc. It was nice, tastes different to your usual meat curry. I went to Taste of Pakistan on Ladypool Road, their breakfasts are the best ive had in the area. Im not sure what they are like in the evenings.

The best food was whatever I could get my hands on to during the curfews/shut downs/blockades etc.

That's strange lol. Every Pakistani restaurant on the right side of the Atlantic serves Nihari :faf . Y'all probably prefer fish and chips lmao.

Funny how people are talking about their experiences regarding Karachian food in the UK. Having it in Brim, Hendon, Ladypool Road and what not for "breakfast". Actual Karachites should just doob in a chullu bhar paani for now.

Do you even know what you're trying to say?

Just go to eat on your Ladypool Road and visit Pakistan whenever you have to take care of your "investments". Thanks.

It has a great variety of food places from burger houses, grills, Pakistani authentic food, English food . Check it out if you're ever in Birmingham.

I'll be going this summer, maybe I will bump into you :)

If I want to eat actual Pakistani food, I'll just go to Pakistan or make it myself at home. I won't probably bump into you unless you are visiting Pakistan to handle your investments. :)

I dont have the time to fly to Pakistan for a meal or cook myself. It's great you can, you'll make a good wife one day. It's a small world, you never know. :)

Same... maybe we will meet inshallah :)

I'll be in Islamabad, would be a pleasure. :)

I would love to visit Karachi too and eat the southern food.

Apart from Biryani are there any other signatures dishes of Karachi?

No - go to Lahore ...

Firstly the dishes are better and secondly we might bump into each other :)

It's not just "karachian food" lmao. You should visit Lahores food street.

Biryani, Nihari etc are all great in Karachi as they are in other parts of Pakistan I'm sure. However, from a local's perspective, I think what may be uniquely good in Karachi is the quick street food. Bun kababs, paratha rolls ranging from chicken chutney, beef bihari kabab, gola kabab, loaded with garlic mayo with a side of masala fries, varieties of chaats, pakoray, samosay, patties, etc. No matter where in Karachi you are, these items are always on the mark.

Another thing that's always been amazing in Karachi is the Chinese food, likely because quite a few restaurants are owned by 1st/2nd generation Chinese-Pakistanis. From Hong Kong in saddar back in the day, to Yuan Tung in Tariq Road, chinese food is amazing in Karachi.

Overall food in Lahore is richer, more indulgent. Lahoris take their food very seriously. We in Karachi work hard and earn 65% of the country's GDP and get by on street food, so that Lahoris can eat their Charghay, murgh chollay, and Lahori fried fish all day :runaway:

Maghaz Nihari at Javed if you ask me. I wouldn't hesitate in choosing it as my very last meal on earth. Come to think of it, if you start consuming it everyday, it could very well become your last meal in a very short time.

I feel like lahore bodies karachi when it comes to halwa puri. Lahoris always got the cholays on point.

I get the feeling there's probably Pakistanis from Karachi in the US, most of the ones in the UK are from Punjab or Kashmir. That might be why you don't get nihari or haleem served in many UK outlets, people aren't as familiar with them.

In Northeast, it's mostly Punjabis.

Punjabis are the majority here lol. Most of the restaurants that are Punjabi owned also serve nihari. I think Lahoris may be different, I've noticed that a lot if potohari people prefer chicken over beef.

Yes, we're very blessed :afridi am going to have some today.

It depends on the immigrants, maybe a lot of Karachites headed for US so you get the Nihari while we settle for the Lahori Biryani and Karahi in the UK:steyn

Have you had the one from tipu sultan? may head to TOP one of the days, I rarely have breakfast in restaurants. Prefer my very own fried egg bread with baked beans and a nice cup of tea :)

No Ive only had chicken karahi or lamb curry from Tipu's. Well if you ever cba to fry your own eggs, check it out, the breakfast is top notch there.

British bulldog got me thinking, is there anywhere to get a full English breakfast, instead of pork, turkey bacon and lamb/chicken sausages?

I would if it was near by or am passing through in the morning :)) plus am out of the city these days :mv

Am not sure, maybe there are places but they probably do pork etc to so you might not want to go to there, just make it yourself bro :yk only Pakistani Breakfast is tricky to make properly :rabada2 so worth going to the Pakistani places who have those amazing breakfast menu's

I can just manage to boil eggs and make toast. :))

If there was an English halal restaurant in our city it would be great. I know Lasagne isn't English but I love such foods and would indulge if a halal option was available inc the breakfast. I know some places do them but those I've tried the English food on the menu was awful.

True those foods are the best but apne can't make it properly same way goreh are rubbish at making karahi's and stuff :))

Maghaz/Nali Nihiari is even better. More fat and the gudda goodness.

Lahori Biryani is supposed to be the P4P best Biryani in the world apparently, I've not been Lahore but that is what the legends say :yk2

I like brain masala as well. Recently I was at a desi restaurant in Dallas and was contemplating between the two as my main entree. Yelp was of no help. Ideally would have ordered both and mixed them together, though the maghaz in maghaz-nihari is not cooked in masala like in brain masala. I was afraid of mixing up two overpowering flavors together and end up not enjoying either of them. It was a tough call but end up going with Nihari which was not bad.

I love Nalli, thats why I like Payee so much. In a perfect world, I would start everyday with Paye, have Biryani for lunch and end the day on Nihari. Even though Nihari is supposed to be eaten early as suggested by its name - Nihar-i, my habit is to save the best for the last.

Ok, Lahoris should just stay away from this thread and hide somewhere in Heera Mandi otherwise they're gonna burn to ash reading all about "Baryani" and "Nahari" :))

I had never had payee so I thought I would try it in a Dubai restaurant, but it was the most pointless dish I've ever had. Some bits floating round in a thin soup which was really tasteless. I have to think they just didn't have any idea how to do it, but it put me off ever asking for it again.

Really feel like I could go for a decent nihari again now, it's been a long time since I had it. What's the best way to eat it? I would think it goes best with a decent naan but I'm open to suggestions from those who know the food better.

Just hot naan. Chapati/Roti in my opinion is too thin for the thick sauce. Taftaans and Parathas don't work either because they take away from the taste of the Nihari.

Yeah it was kinda obvious really, not exactly rocket science. Can't think of a dish which is going to require naan more to be honest. Can't imagine eating it with rice either, it would just be wrong. Nihari is all about the shorba, nothing is going to carry that better than a good naan.

You should try Phajja Paye in Lahore. Supposedly the best in the world. Not everyone can make good Paye. It’s hard to get the right balance of flavors and stickiness. The bone marrow is the key here. The more marrow the better. Your fingers should ideally start sticking like glue after a few dips in the salan. If that’s not happening than it’s not Paye but some version of haddi salan, if there is any such thing like that.

Fingers, and the old flavor saver, i.e. mustache. I'm sporting a hipster mustache these days, and paye is an excellent substitute for wax. Also most waxes are scented with fragrances such as vanilla, whiskey, pine etc. Paye lets you change it up a bit, every now and again.

Speaking of paye, I remember our first visit to the US, way back when. We were invited for dinner at a cousin's, and his wife announced that there will be paye. My father loves paye, and was excited the whole day at the prospect of the gelatinous goodness of the dish.

Dinner was served... but there was no paye. My father looked disappointed, but he didn't say anything. The hosts cleared the table, and brought in the dessert: a pumpkin... pie.

We celebrate Pi(e) Day at work every March 14. Every year I plan on taking paye instead. I would do it too, if I knew how to make them.

I think because karachi is a city of migrants we don't really have a particular dish that you can say it is famous for maybe biryani but you can find great tasting variations of most food available all over pakistan in Karachi as well as dishes adopted from foreign countries.

Whats your favorite restaurant there?

Tipu agar Zinger ka mood hai, Karachi Broast agar broast ka mood hai, roll inn agar roll ka mood hai, frontier agar makhni handi ka mood hai, tandoori hut agar white karahi ka mood hai.

Hope that answers the question :p
