What should be Pakistan's approach to chase the target of 351 to win the 3rd Test?

It's far fetched, but not impossible.

Playing session by session and ensuring that Pakistan are 2-3 down by tea tomorrow can certainly make it interesting. 85 overs of cricket by then and even slow scoring of 2.6 will give 220 to Pakistan. This has already been done by the top order multiple times in the series.

Once they are into final session, 130 in 30 overs can really be targeted. If team is more than 3 down, players can go for the draw.
 
Just need to bat reasonably well and take it 10 overs at a time.
 
Run chases above 300 vs Aussies i can remember

karachi 1994 - chased 314 with inzi and mushy putting on 58 for last wicket

Coloumbo 2002 - chasing 314 - All out 274 - pakistan were 230/4 at one point

Brisbane 2016 - chasing 489 - pakistan 450 all out

its a tough ask but need to get through each session and evaluate how to play from there. Main thing is to be positive as we have a very long tail so another collapse is possible.
 
Australia declared with 120 overs in hand probably by keeping 2 old balls into account. Spinners are bowling atm, pacers will have a go tomorrow when ball is 40 overs old and start reversing. Again that will come into picture in last session. If it doesn't reverse in last session, Australia might be in trouble.

Game is well balanced atm.
 
Try and win the game. Don't die wondering and blocking. Would rather they gave it a go showed intent and even if they fall 100 runs short by tea so be it - rather than a blockathon effort. It is a target that is achievable with the amout of time left.

There is no need to even give it a go. Target is not stiff. Just play normally and take 10 overs at a time.
 
Now that Pakistan are at 69/0, they should chase it down.

Getting 280 in 90 overs is quite doable.

For a normal batting lineup yes. But with Pakistan you are only one wicket away from a potential collapse :yk

Anyways, let's hope for the best and Insha'Allah Pakistan will be chasing this one!

Pakistan should try to maintain 3+ RPO scoring rate.
 
Everything will ultimately depend on how Pakistan tackle the reverse-swing and spin (during the latter part of the day). If they can see out whatever 7-8 over spells that Cummins and Starc will bowl tomorrow without losing wickets than they will be good. If they lose wickets than they will have to go back into ultra-defensive mode to save the match. And then they can easily lose the match too because of the long tail they have.
 
90 overs on a 5th day are a lot of overs to play. Will need a team effort. Hoping our tail shows more grit this innings
 
This isn’t a forced target. Australia have given a sporting run chase.

Least Pak can do is go for it. Play sensibly at the start of day 5 and Aus will start to panic, then Pak can cash in.

It's about seeing off reverse from pacers.
 
I would be happy if Pakistan chase this down, but no matter what, this series belongs to Australia for their positive approach. They have this lovely winning mentality. Could have easily gone for tame draws but they are doing their best to compensate for the poor pitches when it comes to entertaining the crowd.

Yes, only one team tried to force a result in the entire series and that's been Aus. They could have happily walked away from dull 0-0, but aus did not want to have 0-0.

To draw they must go for the win too.

A tuk tuk, blockathon approach and I guarantee we will lose.
 
Pakistan was lucky in second test, Aus fielders dropped so many catches.

Here one more opportunity in third test, no excuses on batting friendly track.
 
280 is a lot of runs. Its not going to be easy. If we lose a couple of wickets, we will go in a shell and collapse.

The best approach is to play positive just like we have started and think about chasing it down, not drawing the game.
 
Keep in mind, pitch is not easy to bat on. Ball is keeping low, turning and there will be reverse swing.
 
Draw is out of equation. Pakistan has to bat positively to bat out whole day and in that process, they will score 270 runs also.

It's either Australian victory or Pakistan's. Aussies have been choking in 4th innings in last few years.

England chased 360 at Headingley.
Pakistan scored 450 while chasing 490.
India chased 320+ at Gabba.
India scored 330+ at Sydney and saved the game.
Pakistan scored 400+ at Karachi and saved the game by batting for 2 days.

If Pakistan plays for draw, they will lose.
 
If azhar and fawad bat any length of time tomorrow pakistan will not win, these two snails will kill any run rate momentum.
 
Pakistan struggle to score more than 2 runs an over on a day 1 pitches.

Touching 3 on a day 5 pitch will be something else.

Play for the draw until tea and reassess then.
Only start planning to go for the target if we are two down at tea, and even then nothing reckless until the last hour.
It's a distant dream at the moment- will probably take for one of their quicks to pull up injured early doors.

Otherwise it's off

I would say it is about 60% Australia, 25% draw and 15% Pakistan at the moment.

We are actually more likely to draw the game if we play positively tomorrow morning, rather than tuk tuk tuk tuk tuk tuk tuk tuk tuk as Aussies, unlike in Karachi, do not have a bunch of runs to play around with. If we have a good first mini session tomorrow morning they will have to spread the field.

We have a huge tail with a number 7 who is more like a number 9/10 so the only way the 15% chance of us winning can come true is if one of Abdullah, Imam, Azhar, Babar or Rizwan plays a sensational knock and someone else sticks with him for 45 overs.
 
Pakistan will choke probably
The reason is there much more spin than usual, shafique is struggling vs lyon. Even if Starc and Cummins won't reverse it miles like in 1st innings, there is enough in the pitch for lyon to win it for aus p
 
We've certainly got a good start. It's Pakistan cricket so stranger things have happen. Maybe we can do it.

Babar is the only ray of hope if he scores century or 70-80 Pakistan will win the match.
 
Keep wickets in hand till tea and only go at the target after tea. Our batting ends at no.6 here. 1 wicket falls and things can change. Aus still heavy favorites.

Hasan could be promoted to get a few quick runs. Down the order, he keeps defending and he sucks at it.
 
They dont deserve to win. Tiny minds and tiny stature. The magnanimity of Aussies is that they declared such boldly. If tables were turned, we would have batted till lunch of day 5. Selfishness and short sightedness is the royalty of this team
 
If Abdullah and Imam play out the morning session with ease, then move Babar and Rizwan up the order with Azhar and Fawad moving down.

Depending on the situation, Hassan Ali can be sent in earlier.
 
I would simply play for draw but while scoring normal runs like 2.5 per over. That in itself is huge task on the 5th day pitch. Even Marnus was able to get chance last over and plenty of balls staying low too.

I would only think of possible win at last 15 overs point let's say 80 runs left with 8 or 9 wickets in hand. Otherwise try Hard too early with too few wickets you could lose while series in 10 to 15 overs. Remember our tail starts after Rizwan.
 
Pakistan scored 170 odd the whole day on Day 3 when the wicket was better and with little pressure. I can't fathom them making 278 on Day 5 under immense pressure.

However, these are the moments that elevate you. If Babar decides to shut up shop tomorrow and not go for the win, then it'll only confirm how scared the Pakistan team is of a failure. As Shane Warne used to say, "It doesn't matter how many runs or wickets you get. What matters is how you played the game."

Azhar Ali's 7000 runs are useless of the highest order (alright maybe apart from that 100 in Sharjah chasing 302) if he again comes tomorrow with the mindset of a blockathon.

Kohli in his first test match captain in Adelaide laid down the marker that they would go for the chase on Day 5 when they needed about 340+ runs. In Australian conditions, he made that call and almost pulled it off. If Pakistan doesn't even decide to chase 278 runs at home on the last day with all 10 wickets intact, then the cricket team should just stop playing Test cricket. They would be a bunch of cowards.

Also I don't believe this strategy of keeping wickets in hand till tea and reassessing the target works. You cannot shut up shop for 2 sessions and only decided to go for the chase if you're 2 wickets down. I remember Pakistan employed this strategy in a Test in NZ where they completely deadbatted everything for 2 sessions on the last day without losing wickets and then decided they will try to score 180 runs in the last session. Absolute harakiri and duly lost it. They should show intent straight from the first session. Target 80 runs in the first session so that Cummins knows that he can't overly attack and that he also needs to defend runs.

Very well said. They don’t need to overcomplicate it. Just have a target for each session. 80 is about right for the first session.

What I don’t want to see is Azhar coming in during the first session especially early on. He’ll not only slow things down, he’ll send jitters through the dressing room. If they have some intent and guts, stick Azhar down the order.

Catches cannot be used as luck favouring Paksitan because Pakistan dropped important ones too to put Australia into position of posting big scores in first place. Catches get dropped in the match its how you utilise those lives given to you that counts. Btw so called catches in last match toward end of Pakistan second inning only sppeared to be so because Aussies were fielding virtually on the playing pitch, and because they were so close that had little chance catching them .
 
IF Bhatija can hold his end till lunch, we might win. This is a big IF.

5th day pitch, Pak batting, reverse swing of Starc and Cummins, and an achievable target - This is quite a bit of looking forward to. Thank you OZs to make it a game on another garbage track. I finally get an incentive to watch a test match in Pak.

The key is Imaam becouse the two spinners won't be able to settle whilst a left and right combination is at the creese.
 
To survive the starch ,Cummins spell and keep wickets intact . That's the only motto . Then runs will come and victory also.
 
I think Pakistan should look to be positive and score runs. That way Aus will be worried about two things: getting wickets and stemming the run flow. If Pakistan play for a draw from the start, it will give a chance to Aus to put pressure and just attack for wickets.
 
babar and team should instill in imam and abdullah's mind that they both need to cross 150 plus.

forget everything else.

forget the scorecard. forget the chase.

just go out there and both score 150.

thats whats needed.
 
351 is a big score and we know only 5 wkts are in hand.
Should look to survive till lunch first and then see if possible to try for chase

This is unrealistic despite seeming achievable. Self preservation until 70th and see if can get to within 100 with 7 wickets left. Though a collapse is never far away
 
only chance to win was for bus driver to have left the hotel to the ground without Azhar and Fawad, these two run vampires always suck life out of any run chase.

This team plays like scared chickens at home, what will happen to them if/when they go to Australia, they will be annihilated there.
 
Why can't teams approach a 350 chase in the 4th innings like an ODI?

Is it because the red ball is more difficult to play than the white ball?

Surely having a couple of pinch hitters attacking the bowling at the beginning will put the opposition under pressure and force them to set defensive fields? You can then score easy singles and doubles.

Pak once chased 302 in 2 sessions on a Day 5 wicket by playing attacking cricket. Why don't we see this approach used more often?

Under no circumstances should Pakistan visit Australia on a full tour schedule. The crowd want to see a contest not a clown show.

A one-off test and a couple of ODI's and a T20 should the maximum. Its what they deserve as its clear they are associate level standard.

In odi games you hardly see any turn on day 5 pitch is most countries it will turn.
