What's new

What should be the balance of the Indian Test team for the upcoming home season?

More time on his side, more potential and looks to have the much needed knack of breaking partnerships. Count me in!

Another factor...when he picks up wickets, he can pick 3-4 in a spell.

Has been doing that in Duleep Trophy.

Yasiresque in this regard.

Pujara in zone is supremely most impactful test bat.

Makes you feel hopeless like Dravid and Kallis but with a small difference.

Once set, he starts scoring much faster and imposes himself better.

Still can't forget his masterful chase on a rank turner against Aus in Delhi.

Incredible knock really. Scored 82 at 90 SR chasing 158 with the ball spitting like hell.

ATG knock.

If Sachin or Lara had played that, it would have got 1000X more hype. Haha.

Also his Mumbai century against Swann and Panesar in full flow. English fans were like "this guy scored 200+* and now 100 on a rank turner....let's get the other batsmen out".

lol.

Unfortunately he ended up on losing side because a certain Kevin Pietersen played one of the greatest innings by a touring batsman against India. That match still gives me pain. I do remember! Carnage it was..

Pietersen knock was a GOAT knock indeed.

Jaws on the floor type.

Pujara is shifting gears.. good signs ahead of the long season... it's going to be super fun if the in form Pujara turns up against New Zealand.. :))

Sheldon looks like a dasher of a batsman. Very brutal against the spinners. Not sure how good he is against the pacers though.

Agreed.. looks a very clever bowler. Just needs to develop more consistency in landing the balls..he can be a real asset for India. Just imagine Ashwin and Kuldeep in tandem.. will be super fun!

Baba Aparajith is one for the future. Hitting sixes effortlessly for a batsman of his physique.

Yep, even am toggling between TNPL and Duleep trophy.. :))

He looks a much improved cricketer now. Can go real big in IPL for the next season!

I'm not following the tourney but actually started watching the match only for Baba Aparajith. He has already scored a century before leaving to play for a Duleep trophy match and then came back and scored another 90 I think. Started off slowly but hit some 6 or 7 sixes in the last 3 overs. Must be said some atrocious bowling though.

His twin (Baba Indrajith) is a decent bat but not as talented as Aparajith. Aparajith is a batting all rounder but first came to the limelight with his bowling though. Can be a good all rounder in the future, still very young.

Pujara is schooling everyone on how to play quality spin.. what a batsman!

Another day another 100! India is lucky that Pujara is playing so positively! :hamster:

Doesn't bowl as much now, started concentrating solely on his batting after his U-19 days.

Yeah, noticed that. Actually this is the first time I'm having a good look at him. I've long heard about him but never really watched him play. Actually thought he was a spinner before. He times the ball beautifully and was sending balls over the boundary with minimal effort which is a good quality to have. But he is slightly raw atm and needs more seasons at Ranji. I think he will go for good bucks at the next IPL.

If we get back 2012-13 Pujara, our batting would be amazing.

Peak Pujara is the best player of spin in the world (alongside Younis).

jusarrived - Do you think we can ever get back the old Pujara? Do you rate him?

I rate him extremely high on Indian/SC pitches & not much overseas . I really dont agree when people say that hes out form , nothing has changed in his game if you ask me . Overall his scoring options are limited against pace/swing so can be choked quite easily and he has some flaws in his game to be a good No 3 overseas for us .

Like I said , in SC conditions hes as good as anyone . I wont be surprised if he averages 80+ in the next few series at home . He was never out or form

I see...

But how can you say nothing has changed in his game?

Compare him in 2012/13 series where he could play very good spinners on rank turners with ease. Didn't even look like getting out for most part.

Then compare him to 2015 series where he struggled against SA spinners on similar tracks. Was scratchy, feet not moving, weak against off spin, etc.

I also don't think Pujara was out of form. He was out of his depth in the last 2-3 years. Regressed if you will. If he comes back, it would be because he improved his game. Maybe the knee injury really crippled him. Dunno.

Pujara is good at killing hopes of oppositions.. Rahul Dravid was the other Indian batsman who rendered bowling attacks helpless. Long may he continue!

Chanceless double from Pujara.

Sheldon is in the best form of his life probably in this tournament. Even on a day where he struggled, he managed to score a century following up on another century and 2 unbeaten half centuries in this year's Duleep trophy.

Great stuff.

But how bad is this pitch?

This is like an Aussie patta.

Would have been interesting to see how Ashwin and Jaddu would have bowled here WITHOUT having a big score on board.

Will be interesting to see how Dhawan and Mukund respond.. Jadeja will be very very tough to handle on this dry surface. I'd declare India Red the winners if they manage to score 500 here.

Thats bound to happen when you he play so many overseas tours on a trot & when you havent played that well takes time to get your timing and foot moving . The knee injury probably played a part , but thats not the reason why he struggled overseas . He was scratchy against WI just a month back and was painful to watch , you really think his game has changed ? I think not and thats my biggest worry for him .

Hmm..so the squad for the NZ series stays virtually the same except for the omission of Thakur (who is impressing in Aus for Ind A and so will be in contention) and sir Binny (who just got one oppo in the T20 ending up with a dubious bowling record) and not any other changes.

Looks like India will revert to the 7 + 4 combo. Even though Rahul is in better form, I expect Dhawan to play the first test only because he is going to offer a left handed option (not that I agree with that though) and Rohit at #6. I do however believe that Manish Pandey is knocking the doors of selection and if Rohit doesnt pull up his socks (damn lucky bugger...how many chances will he get!) he will have to lose his test spot sooner rather than later.

Rohit playing tests for India is good in a way. At least he will be thrown out for his bad performances in 3 matches.. him being a 12th man will extend his career and our agony..

Rahul will open.

Dhawan is pretty fast between dugout and pitch. It will help him for doing sacred duty of carrying the drinks.

Rahul deserves backing..no doubt. Let us see how the management sees this. It could also depend on the team combo the opposition is likely to make. Too many right handers also might play into the hands of the opposition if they are going to draft in SLAs and RLBs in their bowling line up (Sodhi for instance)

How does Rohit Sharma get so many chances in Tests? It's like Pujara playing 100 ODIs, amazing. :))

Sir Jadeja has done great service to us today.

Dhawan got out playing reversesweep to him. If as a left hander he can't handle sla then why not a right hander who can and will outscore him every time and every given conditions. Plus Rahul is future!

It's that time of year again guys..

India went with 6+1+4 in the New Zealand series and the sixth batsman actually came in handy quite a lot during that series. The 4 bowlers managed to dismiss New Zealand in the series without much difficulties.

However England is a different kettle of fish. They have a really long batting line up unlike the kiwis. Almost everyone in their line up has an FC hundred.

So do you think India needs to pick Mishra as well and drop Rohit to account for the long English batting line up or go with the same line up in the previous series?

Surprise surprise? Hardik pandya has been selected in the squad

Squad for 1st 2 tests
Vijay
Gambhir
Pujara
Kohli
Rahane
Nair
Saha
Jadeja
Ashwin
Pandya
J.yadav
Mishra
Umesh
Shami
Ishant

Actually the combo should depend on the pitch conditions, if we are playing on a rank turner then 4 bowlers should be able to do the job.
But if we are playing on a normal turner or kolkata type pitch then we need to pick that extra bowler against a batting line-up like England.

Okay, that was a surprise.

Now that the squad has been announced, it's pretty much clear that Kohli is going with the 5 bowler strategy, especially after England's mishap at Bangladesh.

This is going to be the starting XI at Rajkot most likely:

Vijay
Gambhir
Pujara
Kohli (c)
Rahane
Ashwin
Saha (wk)
Jadeja
Mishra
Shami
Yadav

However, the selection of Pandya makes me wonder if Kohli will spring a surprise at Rajkot. He may well play with

Vijay
Gambhir
Pujara
Kohli (c)
Rahane
Ashwin
Saha (wk)
Pandya
Jadeja
Mishra
Shami

Now that would be a surprise lmao.:afridi

Blooding them young and at no pressure home matches is the way to go.

I expect Jayant and Hardik to give good account of themselves.

Why Rahul couldn't recover in time? :(

FTB like Gambhir are like old bone fractures. Always act up and fail us in time of need.

One issue is that Gambhir will be a walking wicket against any quality pacer and India may find itself one wicket down against the English pacers.

I hope whatever his new technique is, holds up against the pacers.

Tomorrow, it is highly likely that either one of Nair or Pandya will get to make their debut in Test cricket along with the venue itself.

It has literally become a Nair v Pandya debate for the starting XI and Kumble has stressed upon the importance of both players for the team, who will you prefer tomorrow?

Pandya.

Important to blood youngsters at home. Nair is a top order bat. And If he fails here we can cover for him.
