The West Indies red ball squad arrived in Pakistan on Monday for the first time in 18 years to compete in a two-match Test series. The last time the two sides faced off in Pakistan was in 2006, during a three-match series that saw the hosts emerge victorious.

The first Test is set to begin on January 16 at the National Cricket Stadium in Karachi. West Indies will be eager to start strong as they aim to secure their first Test series victory against Pakistan since 2000, which also marks their last series win in any format against Pakistan.

In their 18 Test encounters, Pakistan has won six matches, while the West Indies claimed five victories. Seven matches have ended in draws. Their most recent series in 2021 concluded in a tie, with each team winning one Test. Pakistan’s pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi was the standout performer, taking 18 wickets across four innings, including a 10-wicket haul in the second Test to force a draw.

The upcoming series will conclude both teams' campaigns in the World Test Championship (WTC). Currently ranked eighth (Pakistan) and ninth (West Indies), neither team has a chance to qualify for the final. South Africa and Australia have already secured their spots and will face off at Lord’s from June 11 to 15.

This series will also mark the first time Shan Masood’s team takes on the West Indies, offering the skipper an opportunity to secure his second series win during his eventful tenure. Before the Test series, the Pakistan Shaheens will play a three-day practice match against the visitors to prepare for the contest.

West Indies Squad

This squad will participate in a two-match Test series starting on January 17, 2025, in Multan.

Chacha Nomi & macho Sajid are back so that's some comfort. The questions that need answers in terms of team selection

1. Amir Jamal hasn't done enough so far to keep his place so he will be under scrutiny. What to do with him?
2. Who is to be the third spinner as Zahid was not really good. Can Abrar, Rameez, Mehran, etc. replace him?
3. Openers? Shan Babar or Imam makes a comeback.
4. What kind of pitches are going to be created. This is peak winter so pitches won't break as fast as they need them to break.
5. Bowling combo: 3 spinners & a medium pacer again or something different.

Also I think this is the last series before the champions trophy so Pak can't afford anymore injuries to their frontline ODI players. That will also mean maybe a few changes in the playing 11 or squad.

Is mubasir khan injured or what?

He surely should've played for Pakistan by now. Nice classical off spin and a proper proper batsman. He has done his hard yards too. He was Player of tournament qea for 2 consecutive seasons.

West Indies are probably as good as Pakistan at test matches on recent form. Yet we are fielding an experimental side as if they are Bangladesh of the 00s and we are the ATG Aussies.

Good news if true. The best players should be prepping for CT not get burnt out playing meaningless Test cricket.

PCB have got their priorities right. Nobody's gonna be watching this series anyway.

Many new names. Interesting.

Windies currently have an okay Test team. Would be interesting to see how all these debutants do against Windies.

Bring in ur premium fast bowlers like shaheen, naseem etc along with ur spinners Noman and Sajjid

That tundler pace attack cant win u any game.

Drop all your ODI players

You’ve already lost one of your key assets in Saim in a pointless Test match.

Don’t be stupid now.

That would be a disgusting squad and an affront to international cricket.

I'm all for rotating some players ahead of the CT but not for putting out a B team like South Africa did in New Zealand.

Our Test record over the last 3 years even including the England series win has been awful, with our home form especially embarrassing.

We should be looking to at least lay the foundations for a decent showing (not expecting to reach the Final) for the next WTC cycle with a 2-0 win.

Is this series still part of the current WTC cycle? If yes then time to experiment with some young guns in the fast bowling dept. Surely there must be some raw tall pacers out there? No?

agreed

since Pak is not in the race of this cycle anymore so they must call up young blood and give them a run,, maybe 2 or 3 players we will find who can support this falling empire specially in red ball cricket.

Please drop Abdullah, Aamer Jamal from the squad... Bring Imam in if he performs for Shaheens against windies as he has been scoring runs recently. Also Huraira should be given a chance because he has been with team for a long time but got no chance.

I think it's ok to afford chances to top domestic performers as we are playing on home turf instead of overseas venues. But still we need Sajid Don and Nouman

Imam, Sajid and Hurraira are likely to return in place of Saim, Abdullah and Naseem. Jamal should also be dropped from Tests as still has temperamental issues for longer game.

Yep...Pakistan will be looking to make spin-friendly tracks so Sajid and noman will play. We need only 1 good pacer like Khurram and Abbas should be there.

Naseem is not needed here so he should be rested,.... Jamal should be dropped and include an all-rounder for him.

If the pitches are spin friendly then honestly my first choice pacer pick will be Abbas. He can be trusted to at least give control

That is why I also mentioned Imam first.

Huraria was travelling with the team so it is not fair to drop him without any game like we always do.

I agree with you he should have definately given a chance just like Kamran gulam although both are not international material in my opinion.

That's what happens in Pakistan Cricket. The seasons a player performs. He doesn't get a single chance. Then after 2-3 years when he has an average season. His exclusion is justified by saying oh look he didn't perform in the latest tournament.
