Did PTI only get this political party for the purpose of affiliation? 😀
So we can stop the leeching of PTI independents by kidnappings to your party.

Second reason is they have a seat in the NA.

Pretty self explanatory

Pakistan’s indecisive election outcome and the resulting political uncertainty could complicate the country’s efforts for a new International Monetary Fund (IMF) bailout program, a US-based global rating agency said on Monday.

The Feb. 8 national election in Pakistan presented no clear winner, with independent candidates, backed by former premier Imran Khan, forming the largest group in parliament, according to official results.

The indecisive vote has left the parties of former PM Nawaz Sharif and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, which came in second and third, struggling to form a minority coalition government.

Both Sharif and Khan have claimed victory in polls, leading to uncertainty regarding the formation of the new government in the South Asian country that barely averted a default last year, thanks to a $3 billion IMF program.

“The close outcome of Pakistan’s election and resulting near-term political uncertainty may complicate the country’s efforts to secure a financing agreement with the IMF, to succeed the Stand-By Arrangement (SBA) expiring in March 2024,” Fitch Ratings said in a statement.

“A new deal is key to the country’s credit profile, and we assume one will be achieved within a few months, but an extended negotiation or failure to secure it would increase external liquidity stress and raise the probability of default.”

The nuclear-armed nation of more than 241 million has been grappling with a slow growth and record inflation and needs a stable government with the authority to take tough decisions.

On Monday, Pakistan’s sovereign dollar bonds fell as much as 1.2 cents, Tradeweb data showed, with the 2024 bond standing at 95.89 cents in the aftermath of the contentious election.

Analysts say negotiating a new IMF program, and at speed, will be critical for the new government.

Fitch Ratings said continued political instability in the country could prolong any discussions with the IMF, delay assistance from other multilateral and bilateral partners, or hamper the implementation of reforms.

“We believe a government will assume office and engage with the IMF relatively quickly, but risks to political stability are likely to remain high,” it added.

The potential complications in securing a new IMF bailout program and the associated risks to economic stability underscore the need for a swift and decisive resolution. Let's hope for a timely and effective resolution for the sake of Pakistan's stability and prosperity.

One of my favourite Economics bloggers Noah Smith has just done an excellent article on Pakistan

Pakistan needs a plan

Its draws heavily on Atif Mian's recent Twitter Thread on what the Feb 8 elections mean for Pakistan - Atif Mian Thread

The whole thing is too long to paste here but some highlights

Pakistan is a vast country of 231.4 million people. It’s one of only nine countries in the world with nuclear weapons. It’s located in South Asia, which is now one of the world’s most dynamic and fast-growing regions. It has generally favorable relationships with both the United States and China. It has a long coastline in a generally peaceful region of the ocean. It has plenty of talented people, as evidenced by the fact that Pakistani Americans, on average, out-earn almost all other ethnic groups in the U.S.

What this means is that Pakistan is in ever greater danger of a classic emerging-market currency crisis, in which a country’s currency gets so cheap that the only ways to pay off foreign debt is either by default or by high inflation — either of which hurts the real economy a lot. Already, the Pakistani rupee has lost a lot of its value:

If Mian is right, and Pakistan’s elites have little or no interest in solving the country’s problems, then that’s the whole ball game — Pakistan is doomed, and only a revolution will replace those elites with someone who actually cares enough to take decisive action. But a revolution would be very likely to either break up the country or burden it with an ideological, totalitarian regime, which would also spell doom. So Pakistan’s leaders have a very large incentive to prove Mian wrong, and to make a concerted effort to fix their country’s economy.

Just read the whole thing. Frames the problems really well and tries to suggest some solutions.

Amid a hung parliament following the Feb. 8 elections, China on Monday called for maintaining political unity and social stability in the South Asian nation, state media reported.

“As a close and friendly neighbour, China fully respects the choice made by the Pakistani people,” said Mao Ning, spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry.

Beijing “sincerely hopes that all relevant parties in Pakistan will work together to maintain political unity and social stability after the elections and jointly create a future for national development,” said Mao.

No single political party was able to gain the required numbers to form a federal government on its own after elections were held in Pakistan on Feb. 8.

Most of the seats in the 264-seat National Assembly, were won by independent candidates linked to incarcerated, former Prime Minister Imran Khan, the founder of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party which is barred from participating in the polls.

The Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PML-N) of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif won 75, followed by the Pakistan Peoples Party of Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari which won 54.

The smaller Muttahida Qaumi Movement - Pakistan (MQM-P) party won 17 seats.

MQM-P and the parties of Sharif and Zardari are in talks to form a coalition government, while Khan’s PTI has announced to form an alliance with the Sunni Ittehad Council to gain the reserved seats in the parliament where its 95 candidates won as independents.

PTI has alleged mass rigging to “steal” public mandate as the party’s data claims that its candidates won at least 177 seats through direct elections.

Both the election commission and the government have denied any wrongdoing.

A party requires 134 seats, without adding reserved seats, to form the government on its own at the federal level in the nation.

Like America, China is also getting into the habit of dictating to us.

“As a close and friendly neighbour, China fully respects the choice made by the Pakistani people,” said Mao Ning, spokeswoman for the Foreign Ministry.

I don't see much dictating there to be honest.

You would think that if they think the PTI is so bad, they would happily back one of the other two more established parties.
I back PTI. I was commenting on Fearless, who supports PMLN going by his posts.

A good time for PPP to dictate their terms now.

Bilawal foresees stalemate in formation of new govt
PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that he foresees a stalemate in government formation “if someone is not ready to change their stance”.

Speaking to reporters at the Supreme Court today, the former foreign minister said the PPP and him are adamant on their stance, highlighting that it will not be changed at any cost.

“If someone else wants to change their stance, there can be progress. If they are not ready to change it, I foresee a stalemate,” Bilawal said, adding that this would not benefit democracy or the parliamentary system.

“If I want to give the PML-N a vote, I will have to give it on my terms and not theirs,” he said.

“The delay [in forming the government] is because of non-serious,” he said, adding that this harmed Pakistan’s democracy. “The faster this is resolved, it will be better for stability and the incoming government.”

PTI will sit with everyone if ‘stolen seats’ returned: Imran’s sister Aleema

Aleema Khan, the sister of former premier Imran Khan, has said the PTI would have talked to other political parties if its “stolen seats” were returned back to it.

Speaking to the media outside the Adiala district jail, she said she was denied a meeting with her brother, who is currently incarcerated there. Aleema criticised the judicial system, claiming that hearings were not being held properly.

On the matter of not holding a dialogue with the PPP, she said, “Could Imran make a government with the PPP? Can you imagine that those that the public wants to get rid of… The matter is that when the PPP offered to meet, we asked them to return our stolen seats.

“Tell them that if they return all our seats, we will sit with everyone,” Aleema said, alleging that the PML-N, PPP and MQM-P had won multiple NA seats wrongfully.

Marwat warns of strong opposition if PTI’s ‘stolen seats’ not returned

PTI leader Sher Afzal Marwat has warned that his party would emerge as a strong opposition if their “stolen seats” were not returned.

“The PML-N and PPP have announced that they have distributed positions but we want to tell the nation that they if sit in the government with our mandate and if we are forcefully made to sit in the opposition, then they won’t be able to run the country in peace,” he said.

Addressing PML-N’s candidate for premier Shehbaz Sharif, Marwat said the former would find himself in a “queue of lions”.

“And if you impose a certified thief like Zardari on the respectful position of the president, then it will be an insult to Pakistan,” he said, adding that Imran had instructed the nation to stand firm in the fight for justice.

PTI’s Shandana Gulzar terms coalition govt ‘illicit’ and ‘illegal’

PTI leader Shandana Gulzar, who won the February 8 general elections, from Peshawar, has termed the coalition government “illicit” and “illegal”.

In a post on X, she said the “it [the government] will fall on its own feet”.

“I got a whopping majority in the elections simply because people are sick and tired of dealing with sycophants, with corrupt dynasties and they wanted change,” Gulzar added.

Maulana Fazlur Rehman, chief of the Jamiat Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), issued a stark warning following the announcement of a coalition government between the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), asserting that both parties would blackmail each other while being manipulated by "hidden forces" behind the scenes.

Speaking at a meeting regarding his party's protest against alleged rigging in the recent general elections, Fazl lamented the erosion of democratic principles.

"After the 2018 election, we hoped for fairness and transparency in 2024, but once again our aspirations and constitutional supremacy have been undermined,” he maintained.

Rehman raised concerns about the legitimacy of the Parliament if elections continue to be disputed. He criticised direct interference by the military establishment in the “selection” of representatives, warning that such actions would compromise the democratic process.

"In this election, our establishment has shattered corruption records spanning 75 years," he declared, emphasising the importance of upholding democratic values. "We are the torchbearers of democracy, and it is our responsibility to protect the Constitution," he added.

The JUI-F leader took aim at the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), accusing them of hypocrisy for alleging rigging after benefiting from it in 2018. "When you were forming a government in 2018, there was no talk of rigging. But now, when you find yourselves on the opposite end, suddenly you see rigging," Fazl remarked.

Regarding his party's role in Parliament, the JUI-F chief asserted that their true strength lay in street protests rather than legislative chambers. He also criticised the growing influence of the military in political affairs.

Earlier in the day, JUI-F had announced that it would commence a movement against alleged rigging during the February 8 general elections. Party leader Aslam Ghauri, in a statement, said that in the initial phase of the movement, meetings at different party levels will be held.

"The rigging in these elections has put 2018's rigging to shame," said the JUI-F leader and added that a "mockery has been made of the public mandate."

If we are talking a hate game, hindutva was there before partition, and in fact could be argued was the reason for partition, as Jinnah's argument was that the desire for hindu payback for hundreds of years living under Muslim rule would put them in danger. A core tenent of hindutva is that Muslims in India must basically become hindu culturally and it will be interesting to see how this develops over the coming decades with hindutva politics firmly entrenched in the country.

The Supreme Court (SC) Friday dismissed a plea seeking enforcement of the Islamic presidential form of government system in Pakistan.

The orders were passed by CJP Justice Qazi Faez Isa on a plea filed for enforcement of the Islamic presidential system in the country.

At the outset of the hearing, the CJP in his remarks said we also want the Islamic system. “There is a parliamentary form of govt system in Pakistan, the colour of the constitution’s book is also green, you must read it,” the top judge asked the pleader.

CJP Justice Qazi Faez Isa remarked that the constitution begins with the name of Allah, while the Holy Quran is also mentioned in it.

According to Article 227, no law could be contrary to the Quran and Sunnah.

The CJP asked the plaintiff why do you want a presidential system in Pakistan. Do you want to give all the powers to an individual alone?

At this juncture, the petitioner sought time from the SC to read the constitution, but the CJP dismissed the plea by saying “Take your time, read it and if you like, you can file a fresh plea in the future.”

Opposition parties in Sindh announced to hold a joint protest outside the provincial assembly during the inaugural session against what they called ‘historical rigging’ in the General Elections 2024, ARY News reported.

The leaders of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), and Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fzal (JUI-F) announced to protest in a joint press conference.

PTI Sindh President Haleem Adil Sheikh said that the elections were ‘rigged’ in different ways in Karachi, Hyderabad, Larkana, and Sukkur.

“There will be no talks with the Pakistan People’s Party and Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan as both the parties are beneficiaries of the rigging,” Haleem Adil Sheikh added.

JI Karachi Ameer Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said that newly elected members of his party as well as the PTI would not take oath in the inaugural session as a protest.

He said that the PPP and MQM-P were awarded a ‘fake’ mandate of the province. “We will be expanding our protest,” Hafiz Naeemur Rehman said.

JUI-F leader Rashid Soomro said that they would be holding a protest headed by the GDA leadership. “If the opposition parties are denied to hold peaceful protest, we will not be responsible for any mishap,” Rashid Soomro.

GDA’s Safdar Abbasi termed the General Elections 2024 as the ‘most rigged polls’ in the country’s history. He said that opposition parties would never accept the ‘rigged’ results.

Safdar Abbasi also questioned the role of caretaker setup in Sindh, alleging interim Chief Minster Justice (retd) Maqbool Baqar to ‘support’ the PPP.

It is pertinent to mention here that the GDA also held a protest demonstration at Hyderabad Bypass against ‘rigging’ in the elections in which other opposition parties also participated.

Addressing the protest, GDA Chief Pir Sibghatullah Shah Rashdi, popularly known as Pir Pagara, said that the General Elections 2024 were ‘sold’ three months back.

He said that he did not hold an election campaign as the elections were already ‘sold’.

Pir Pagara said that the PTI was ‘expelled’ from the electoral process based on Intra-party elections. “I don’t consider Imran Khan a thief. If he is a thief, we all are thieves too,” the GDA chief said.

And does PTI think JI is less corrupt than other parties?

JUI-F and JI are different parties, and from what I've heard, JI has a good reputation in Karachi, where they are more popular than the likes of PPP and MQM. Now on to the main point, protesting alongside other parties is not the same as forming a political alliance where you do power sharing. If PTI protested alongside either PML-N or PPP, that would be fine too, as long as they don't ally with them politically.

Right now PTI is mostly engaging with JI because both PTI and JI account for almost all of the votes in Karachi, except for 1-2 NAs. Since both PTI and JI were robbed in Karachi, it makes sense that they are both asking for their mandate back alongside each other.

Ask PDM about political consciousness.

PTI-backed Amir Dogar, who lost the vote for speaker of the National Assembly to PML-N’s Ayaz Sadiq, said he would have received 225 votes today had Form 45 been used to compile results in general elections on Feb 8.

“Form 47 stole our mandate, and 80 NA seats of ours were stolen,” he said. “Had they not been stolen, PTI would’ve been the single largest party in this assembly.”

He praised PTI workers for contesting elections on various symbols allotted to them after the party was deprived of its iconic bat symbol by the Supreme Court.

The MQM-P and PML-N have reached an agreement on the “spirit, objective and need of a constitutional amendment for the establishment of autonomous and empowered local governments”.

Signed at the Parliament House, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) took in MQM-P’s request of galvanising local bodies and ensuring the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award reached “all districts”.

In the MoU, it was stated that the “PML-N and MQM-P will jointly work to forge a national consensus within the parliament for the passage of the bill”.

Bilawal hopes MQM-P secures ‘undecided’ posts in coalition govt

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has conveyed optimism about the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) securing key positions in the coalition government, where agreements between PPP and PML-N could not be reached.

Speaking to reporters outside the Parliament House in Islamabad on Friday, Bilawal addressed questions regarding the ongoing discussions about the power-sharing formula for the coalition government at the Centre. He acknowledged that certain positions remained undecided between PPP and PML-N, and expressed his hope that MQM-P would be considered for these roles.

"We have not reached a decision on certain positions with PML-N, and for those positions, I hope that MQM-P will get a chance," stated Bilawal.

Responding to queries about objections raised against Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, Bilawal emphasised that the PPP has no specific issues related to any individual. This stance aligns with the party's commitment to focusing on policy matters and broader political cooperation rather than personal disputes.

An unfair decision

After the allotment of the reserved seats that were denied to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), the PML-N has emerged as the largest party in the National Assembly, with the party and its allies securing a two-third majority in the lower house of parliament.

The SIC, a small party with an insignificant presence, became a refuge for the PTI-backed independent lawmakers, who joined it for the sake of the reserved seats.

However, its request for the allotment of the reserved seats was turned down by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) because it had not submitted a “priority list” for them prior to the polls.

The PML-N-led coalition government in the Centre now has 229 members in the NA with the PPP, MQM-P, PML-Q, Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), Pakistan Muslim League-Zia (PML-Z) and Balochistan Awami Party (BAP) as part of the alliance.

With a total of 334 seats in the NA, the PML-N has become the largest party in the House by bagging 123 of them after the allotment of the reserved seats.

The PPP now has 73 members in the NA after being allotted 16 and three reserved seats for women and minorities respectively in addition to the 54 general ones it had won.

The PPP Is followed by the MQM-P, which has 22 members in the NA, after being allotted four reserved seats for women and one for minorities. Both the PML-Z and BAP have one seat each in the lower house.

The SIC hold the second place in terms of NA seats with 82. The JUI-F has 11 MNAs after being allocated four reserved seats for women and one for minorities. Four parties each have one seat in the NA: Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM), BNP-M, PkMAP, and ANP.

There are eight independent MNAs, who have not joined any party yet. Similarly, in the Punjab Assembly following the allotment of reserved seats, the PML-N has 224 MPAs in the provincial legislature out of a total of 336.

In the Punjab Assembly, PML-N won 139 general seats and 21 independent members later joined the party. The party was allotted 57 and seven reserved seats for women and minorities, respectively.

The SIC has 106 members in the provincial legislature.

The PPP’s members in the Punjab Assembly have increased to 16 after one independent member joined it and it was allotted four reserved seats for women and one for minorities.

The number of PML-Q members in the Punjab Assembly has increased to 11 after it was allotted three reserved seats for women.

The IPP has six members in the Punjab Assembly as three independent MPAs joined it and the party was allotted two reserved seats for women.

The Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, PML-Z and MWM each have one seat in the provincial legislature.

The election was not held in one constituency of the Punjab Assembly and the notifications for four of them have been withheld by the ECP.

In the Sindh Assembly, the PPP now has 116 MPAs in the 168-member legislature after the allotment of the reserved seats.

Apart from its 88 members, 21 reserved seats for women and seven for minorities were allotted to it.

In the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, the SIC has 89 seats in the 145-member legislature. The number of the JUI-F MPAs has reached 18 after it was allotted 10 reserved seats for women and one for minorities.

The PML-N has 16 MPAs in K-P after it was allotted eight reserved seats for women and one for minorities.

The PPP has managed to take its tally in the provincial assembly to 11 following the allotment of six reserved seats for women and one for minorities.

Similarly, the PTI-Parliamentarians is also in a similar position in the K-P Assembly with two MPAs in the House after being allotted one reserved seat for women.

PPP has openly expressed its concerns over a lack of consultation by the Punjab government on critical issues, such as the budget and the recently-promulgated defamation law

Though the PPP is not formally part of a coalition government in the province since the PML-N enjoys a simple majority, it has supported the ruling party in the assembly during the legislative business.

PPP Central Punjab general secretary Syed Hassan Murtaza referred to this agreement on Monday when he said that his party didn’t vote for the PML-N “to prepare the budget in the kitchen”.

“You did not take PPP into confidence while preparing the budget proposals,” he said, addressing Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif at a press conference.
Murtaza says his party didn’t support Punjab govt for ‘solo decision making’; LHC to hear challenges to controversial act today
He claimed that this would be the first budget where the government didn’t take its allies and stakeholders into confidence.

No relief plan has been announced so far for the salaried class and pensioners in the budget, said the PPP leader.

He added that “PPP had high expectations” from CM Maryam that she would take the province forward as per the vision of her father, Nawaz Sharif.

However, he regretted that farmers, who form the country’s backbone, were suffering because of the Punjab government’s policies.

The provincial agriculture department “could not formulate a comprehensive policy” to procure wheat before the sowing started, and the indecision left the growers in a lurch after they toiled hard and reaped a bumper crop.

Mr Murtaza asked if the government would compensate the farmers for its delayed decision not to procure wheat this season.
