From all indications, this series is going ahead in Sri Lanka.

So should Pakistan send in a second-string side and rest main players?

This is three-match ODI series which will take place in Hambantota from September 1 to 5.

Rumours are floating around that Pak will send a 2nd string side. Shadab will captain the side while Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen will be rested.

Not sure who else will be rested but, I would rest Hassan as well as he is one of our most important players and would be better to keep him fresh.

Hasan should be the first name on the sheet of players being rested. The guy is extremely crucial to the team. Also, it's almost impossible to fully recover from a back injury and go back to 100% (esp without a surgery), so he should be rested whenever an opportunity arises.

Exactly. Has been playing continuous cricket since comeback and deserves the rest.

If Pakistan rest Rizwan ,babar and Shaheen then Afghanistan will win this series with 2-1 .

Not sure what will be the size of the squad but, my 18 picks (Resting Hassan as well):

Shadab Khan (C)
Fakhar Zaman
Imam Ul Haq
Haris Sohail
Abdullah Shafique/ Sharjeel Khan
Saud Shakeel
Haider Ali
Hussain Talat/ Khushdil Shah
Iftikhar Ahmed
Rohail Nazir/ Zeeshan Ashraf (WK)
Faheem Ashraf/ Aamir Yamin
Mohammad Nawaz/ Imad Wasim
Amad Butt
Mohammd Wasim Jr
Shahnawaz Dahani/ Arshad Iqbal
Mohammad Hasnain
Haris Rauf
Usman Qadir

They might go with Sarfaraz as WK but, then that would eliminate the purpose of trying young players and backup options as Sarfaraz is 34.

Even if we assume so, long-term gain > short-term pain. Risking one of your premier players getting injured prior to the really tough match-ups is just bad planning/management.

A serious question. Will the Afghan cricket team refuse to play Pakistan because of the situation in Afghanistan?

I really dont give a toss if we win or loose this series. I am desperate to see new faces. Really no point in playing Sarfaraz & Imad.

Lets give Babar, Rizwan, Hassan Ali & Shaheen a well deserved rest.

1. Sharjeel Khan
2. Imam ul Haq
3. Fakhar Zaman
4. Kashif Ali
5. Saud Shakeel
6. Rohail Nazeer
7. Shadab Khan
8. Mohammad Nawaz
9. Mohammad Wasim
10. Arshad Iqbal
11. Mohammad Hasnain

If we're playing our full squad against Zimbabwe, I can't see them doing otherwise against Afghanistan.

We will not pass first round in World T20 under Misbah because all teams will send their main team. Then no point resting Babar, Shaheen….Also current Afghan team can easily win against our main team by 2–1. Against 2nd string team it will be 3-0 without any doubt.

Yep, play the strongest team as part of final prep for WT20. Need to get these guys in the groove. T20 isn't the most demanding format physically where we need to start resting players just before a major tournament.

In saying that, can try out some fresh faces in the middle order which just hasn't clicked.

What's the use of resting batsmen? Batters need time at the crease to get in better form. Also the runs on decent SL wickets against one of the best spinners will give them confidence.

For fast bowlers its a different story all together and naturally are more injury prone.

Also, did they get tired by watching the rain in the West indies? If you take out those washed out games then we haven't played that much in the last few months.

Very unwise to risk losing a series against Afghanistan just before a world cup. Why couldn't they do this against Zimbabwe when we had all the time in the world?

Can Kashif Ali play for Pakistan? I don't think he has Pakistani residency.

We should play our strongest side. Our second side if we have one will most likely lose to the Afghan minnows.

Pakistan need to send a full strength or close to full strength side. Maybe they could try a rotation policy for the bowlers depending on the first few odi results but they will definitely lose if they send their second string side and it will be more of a political embarrassment given the current situation in Afghanistan.

Remember the 2019 World Cup? Where Imad rescued pak after they lost the warm up. The justice for balochistan slogans and the afghan fans behavior that day.

Pakistan can not afford to even lose a single game let alone the series. Will have to send a full strength team especially given how close the World Cup is and Afghanistan is in the same group.

Hope Pakistan send a decent squad. Don't want PCB to be arrogant and send a weak team only to be defeated by the Afghans.

The Afghans would be at their full strength and raring to go against Pakistan so cannot afford to get complacent against them.

LAHORE: Though rapid political changes taking place in Afghanistan where Taliban took control of the country’s capital on Sunday has raised doubts over the forthcoming three-match One-day International series between Pakistan and Afghanistan, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) on Wednesday decided to start the preparations by organising the national training camp in Lahore from Aug 21 to 28.

The said series is scheduled to be staged from Sept 1 to 5.

The Babar Azam-led Pakistan team, currently playing a two-Test series in the West Indies, may not join the said camp as the second Test in Kingston will be played from Friday.

The PCB still awaits a final confirmation about the tour from its Afghanistan counterpart, which must be assessing the latest developments happening in the country with the Taliban-led government about to take charge. Due to the poor law and order situation in Afghanistan for decades, the country has not been able to host any series at home.

The Pakistan-Afghan*istan series, which is is part of the 2020-23 ICC World Cup Super League, was originally scheduled to be held in the UAE but after the shifting of the Indian Premier League from India to the UAE due to surge in Covid-19 cases across India, the series was shifted to Sri Lanka.

Earlier in a statement on Tuesday, chief executive of the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) Hamid Shinwari said the ODI series against Pakistan would not be affected by the recent political change in the war-torn country.

I think we will see

Sharjeel
Imam
Sohaib Maqsood
Hussain Talat
Shoaib Malik
Iftikhar Ahmed
Sarfraz Ahmed
Asif Afridi
Amad Butt
Wasim Jr
Dahani

There are Super League points on offer, so we need to remain vigilant with whatever squad we send.

It needs to contain a mix of experience and youth to get the best out of this prospective series.

A balanced squad in my mind would look like this:

Fakhar Zaman (experienced)
Imam-ul-Haq (moderately experienced)
Sohaib Maqsood (comeback)
Haider Ali (inexperienced)
Rohail Nazir (inexperienced)
Sarfaraz Ahmed (experienced)
Qasim Akram (inexperienced)
Shadab Khan (experienced)
Imad Wasim (experienced)
Mohammad Hasnain (inexperienced)
Haris Rauf (inexperienced)
Usman Khan Shinwari (comeback)
Saud Shakeel (inexperienced)
Mohammad Nawaz (inexperienced)
(Spare slot for List A pacer)

Notable exclusion is Haris Sohail due to injury concerns.

I want to see Qasim Akram get a chance, so my first choice team is the following:

Fakhar Zaman
Sohaib Maqsood
Saud Shakeel
Haider Ali
Qasim Akram
Sarfaraz Ahmed (wk)
Imad Wasim
Shadab Khan (c)
Usman Khan Shinwari
Haris Rauf
Mohammad Hasnain

You've got a lot of spin options available to exploit, and also enough pace.

Two left-arm orthodox spinners, a right-arm orthodox spinner, and a leg-spinner.

Good batting in the powerplay with players comfortable against spin.

Good blend of youth and experience forming the middle order.

Will be a treat to watch for sure.

With all that being said, I hope that the money earned can be used to aid Afghanistan. I hope that the suffering they have endured for years can come to an end soon.

Should be a good chance for Haider Ali. Even with his disintegration of late, he remains a bright prospect who actually has potential.

I think Hassan will be rested and rightly so

According to media reports, training camp for the AFG v PAK ODI series has been postponed as has the announcement of the squad.

When was it supposed to be announced?

Squad announcement was supposed to be today. Afg haven’t shared the itinerary nor their travel plans to Pakistan so that’s why it’s been postponed. Majorly due to the situation with flights from Kabul to Colombo and the political movement in Afg.

It means we are better then Afghanistan!! This is why even if we win it does not help Pak Cricket in anyway.

It does help it creates doubts to the player who are in the main squad and helps increase competition within the squad.

LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has postponed preparations camp for the ODI series against Afghanistan.

According to the details, PCB has decided to postpone the training camp until Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) announces the schedule and travel plan.

Initially, the PCB planned to hold a training camp for ODI players from August 21-28 here at Gaddafi Stadium. The squad for the series was expected to be announced on Friday.

Dont know how Afghanistan cricket board can continue affairs with current chaos.

If Fawad is fit enough and not fatigued enough I’d send him but the QeA season is coming.

Coz once bitten twice shy! All these potentially great players always disappoint us. I don't want Pak to be embarrassed further by losing to Afghanistan then saying it was our second string out there.

I would like to give some fresh faces a chance

1 Rohail Nazir ( As opener)
2 Fakhar Zaman
3 Muhammad Huraira

Although I’m somewhat of a Talat fan, the guy is clueless against good spin bowling and that’s evident of what Shamsi did against him in the home t20 series. I don’t feel confident of him batting against a really threatening and good spin bowling attack.

Sarfraz is a spent force in my view and so Pakistan could look to invest in Kamran Ghulam instead and if he’s a Pakistan resident then Kashif Ali.

Sharjeel
Fakhar
Kamran ghulam
Saud Shakeel
Asad shafiq(very impt.considering spinners
of Afghan)
