What was the last film you watched? (V2.0)

The one Nic Cage performance that I would have loved to see that we sadly missed out on, was him as Superman in the cancelled Superman Lives. The film was supposed to come out in 1997 and be directed by Tim Burton, working off a script by Kevin Smith and starring Nic Cage as the Man of Steel. Cage is a massive comic book and Superman fan. He literally changed his name from Nicolas Coppola to Nicolas Cage after the comic book character Luke Cage, so people would take him at face value rather than for him being the nephew of the greatest American directors that ever lived. He also owns Superman #1 and named his son Kal-El, which tells what a big fan he is.

So I am certain that movie would have been amazing. The story would have included Brainiac and Doomsday, two of the best Superman villains after Luthor. But studio interference ruined it and ultimately they closed the film down.

Am not a huge fan of Supes but am certain Cage would have been tremendous in the role, what did you think of his cameo in The Flash! his childhood self must have been so chuffed with that aha

Burton and Cage would have created magic

Did anybody love Gone in 60 secs, a big childhood guilty pleasure filled with so much of that legendary 90’s nostalgia, FF before FF was a think but with a vastly superior lead who could sell the gimmick, it’s the first car movie I recall being thrilled by

I share the same feeling, and it takes a lot to move me when it comes to the horror genre and think you captured the execution of the scenes perfectly. It wasn’t even a slow burner, I think it was slowly tearing apart your insides with the constant dread built upon the creative direction as you said and fantastic cast, it was a little like Herzog’s Nosferatu in that regard. I will go out and say that even without the supernatural element at the end the effect it had would have remained devastating, it’s odd because in my mind I was justifying how the family’s could have been manipulated by LL to the point of doing what they did, it was feasible in my eyes. It’s a familiar trope but they covered so much depth, I need to watch it again when I have the chops back lol the most disturbing horror/thriller for me since The Babadook & The Wailing. Yes you need to let it sink in for a few days and then think about the review etc it took a few days before I stopped thinking about LL while going to the bathroom at night 🤣 Cage is a legend man, this showing is raising some awareness at least for his incredible body of work.

Make sure you catch In A Violent Nature in the theatre if possible! limited release though sadly
You're right. I probably need to let it sit a little bit. It has gone up atleast half a star for me since the time I wrote the last post.

Yeah I can see this film working without the supernatural stuff. But at the same time, I think it added a really creepy aspect that might not have been there otherwise. I thought the scenes where her mother first showed up and the final scene involving Maika Monroe's boss and his family were incredibly unsettling.

I did find it funny when they said that someone is helping LL. And I was like, there are literally four characters in the movie. So they made that a little obvious. But that's a small nitpick. Again, I feel like I have to put over the filmmaking. Everything from the symmetrical framing, harsh cuts to flashbacks/dreams...the use of noise, the abstract imagery makes this film stand out so much. I haven't seen anything from this director Oz Perkins before but he has a meticulous sense of form.

I don't really care much for these superhero movies either besides Batman and Spider-Man because I read their comic books as a kid. But yeah, this could have been great.

Funnily enough, this is one famous Nic Cage movie I haven't seen. But now that you have put it over, I'll definitely see it. Have you seen Snake Eyes? It's Cage and De Palma. One of the more underrated Brian De Palma films I feel. Cage is at his scenery chewing best although maybe doesn't dial it up to an eleven like he does in Face/Off or Wicker Man.

Deadpool & Wolverine - 7/10, zero plot but Jackman and Reynolds have chemistry, movie was about them and their strong characters made it a decent theme park to visit once in a while.

Trap - Decent return to form from Shymalan, good psychological thriller, script could be a little tighter but it didn’t matter as much due to the outstanding lead. 7.7/10

Alien Romulus - Loved the throwback aesthetics and the younger cru was interesting. 7.5/10

Cukoo - Really weird German horror, the idea while it was a creative spin on Frankenstein, I think it got complicated at times. The direction was very excellent though. 7.7/10

Blink Twice - I’ve seen a lot of thrillers similar to this, it did well to get you that fix. It didn’t re-invent the wheel but a decent watch. 7/10

AFRAID - Horror about Alexa taking over a smart home. The trope has legs in a modern setting, though I didn’t find it creepy enough. 6.5/10

Twisters - Now this was a proper hollywood blockbuster, very tight script, strong characters and a charismatic lead, being in the eye of the storm was disturbing and especially their choice to pick the theatre as their setting during the finishing stretch. 8.5/10

Despicable Me 4 - I’ve only really seen the first and one of the minion movies, this was just so bad and dumb, it’s a good reflection of the audience now. 4.5/10

Haven't watched a movie in a long time.

Last movie I started was The Equalizer 3 but didn't finish it.

Watched Deadpool vs Wolverine.

Lots of curse words and the comical parts was not as great like in past Deadpool movies. 6 out of 10 for me

It wasn’t even a movie really, I don’t know what I was watching, I didn’t take it seriously, take very little from Marvel seriously. But Hugh Jackman is a great actor and Madonna made some good music back in the day.

Loved Trap. The script could have been a bit tighter and tense. Hartnett's performance was amazing.

He was terrific and just made for that role, one hell of a casting. Not a fan of such movies turning into a franchise but I’d like to see more from him in a similar role, maybe a crime TV series like Black Bird

Definitely watching Twisters now, I loved the old one and this looked like a good hollywood one but i just have been away from movies so missed it.

I'd like to him doing similar roles, he was exceptional and portrayed both his sides equally well. but I don't want it to become a franchise. It was a good one off movie. I wasn't too chuffed with the overly british fbi profiler though.

The marketing hasn’t been great for Twisters but it has been a sleeper word of mouth hit, I think this movie was a great homage to the late 90’s and early 2000’s spectacles; all the bells and whistles are there, but so is the soul. Defo worth a watch if you get the chance.

Just watched Twilight of the Warriors: Walled In, incredible incredible action movie.. If you liked Kungfu Hustle you'd definitely like this one..

Tumbbad got re released in theaters and is doing much better second time around lol.

Biggest Hindi movie in terms of boxoffice now is Stree 2, lol I don’t think people have even heard of it outside Hindi belt.

Even Veer Zaara is rereleased in theatres, such contrasting audience for bollywood right now.

Checkout this trailer called Kalki 2898 AD and tell me what you thought about it? It’s a movie on Indian Scifi mythology and surprisingly became a hit as well.

Alien Romulus was like if you put all the Alien movies into ChatGPT and asked it to give you a new Alien movie.

Still enjoyed it tho. It was like a slasher movie in space. Though I thought that the ending was kinda lazy. Also wasn't a fan of the weird deepfake Ian Holm recreation.

Quite enjoyed the new Beverly Hills Cop movie. They did alot to recapture the spirit of the original movies. And Eddie Murphy was as good as ever.

Top movie that worth a watch in the theatres again, they don’t make anything like that now do they for global releases besides the usual Bollywood tripe? Veer Zaara type movies must be so rare as well. I will check out Kalki may even check it out if you reckon it’s decent and has a wider release

Yeah it was a very safe movie plot wise, the aesthetics were brilliant and very similar in tone to the OG movies, but he could have gone further to make it more horrific. The OG movies are still so terrifying. I wanted more but it could have been so much worse, given the quality of sequels etc in general. It did well at the box office with a relatively small budget so there could be room for improvement.

Noah Hawley is making an Alien TV series, could be decent given his own resume and writing background.

Yeah I definitely did like the aesthetic. And it unfolded much like a slasher movie, which I enjoyed. But somehow watching these Aliens movies always makes me feel like they are trying desperately to recreate the spark of the original. So much nostalgia baiting and creating connections. All it did was make me want to rewatch the first 3 Alien movies more.

I hope Noah Hawley can do something different with his TV Show. I will say I am interested to see that.

You can look at it both ways, on the flip side there are ‘adaptations’ which completely distance themselves from what made the original piece of work so great and that can be hit or miss, Noah is bringing the Aliens to Earth into the light for the first time so it may be a bit more what you’re looking for. But here I appreciated the nod to the past, it’s tough as well because those movies are difficult to follow and are some of the greatest genre movies ever made; I would have liked to see more terror / dread / suspense being created but maybe it’s a studio decision to tone it down.

Naw I would just say Stree 1 is good, haven’t seen stree 2 or Kalki yet.

Tumbbaad was an anomaly we rarely make movies like that even historically.

Hindi movies good ones: Laapata Ladies and Kho Gaye Hum Kahan, both on netflix.. i guess both aren’t Theater material lol.

Even SRK doesn’t do VEER zara kind anymore, but I have to say Laila Majnu of Imtiaz Ali surprised the hell out of me, give that a try, very different it also re released and became a hit.

What’s the best horror movie you’ve seen from south asia since that one and yeah SRK’s movies are so embarrassing I bet Yash Chopra must be rolling his grave, Fan might be the last decent movie he will ever make

Yes but it's hard not to be reminded of how great Alien 1 and 2 were while watching these movies. I suppose that's an inescapable thing with these reboots/sequels/prequels. But nostalgia only goes so far with me. Eventually I need something new and original. Personally speaking, I haven't been a huge fan of the mythology that they have added with Prometheus and those other prequels, eventhough I'm a huge fan of Damon Lindelof and his knack for creating mythology. Not sure how you feel about them. For me, the fact that so much was unknown/a mystery about the Aliens and their world was what made the first two movies so great. I mean just the space jockey. It was such a cool and scary thing and the fact that you didn't know why it was there is precisely what made it so.

Zibahkhana is kinda underrated tbh. It's a Pakistani cult horror slasher from the the mid-2000s. It's not very good but its an impressive achievement, all things considered. Because back then Pakistan had a completely dead/non-existent indie cinema landscape. And the thing I like about this movie is that it doesn't take itself too seriously or try to hide the fact that its a rip-off of iconic slashers like Texas Chainsaw.

I think BHOOT and Raat are only decent bollywood horror ones, Horror genre is not really a bollywood thing but horror comedy is :
Bhool Bhulaiya-2
Stree
Go Goa Gone
Golmaal 4

Yes absolutely, and nostalgia or nods to prior frameworks can be utilised effectively in new material to, even though it can be difficult to replicate or more unlikely even surpass it, but certainly possible as we saw with Top Gun: Maverick. Certainly, I’d love to see original works which are top notch in that sense. I saw Prometheus recently and stylistically it’s very different to the original trilogy with its general tone, it’s a bit lighter but it digs deeper into the history, though I would agree that if you watched this movie first, then perhaps it could blunt the terror a little in the classics. I definitely prefer the originals due go the terror/horror, but didn’t mind this too much and both Rapace and Fassbender were terrific, Rapace was so at home in the role and I’ve really enjoyed her during her recent sci-fi mystery TV series called Constellation. Yes, in the words of Clive Barker, the ‘monster’ is seldom terrifying once it is known and audiences now just don’t have the patience for a slow burn. I’ve written a few shorts, one was around the 3-4k mark which was very well liked and another a novellete which is a long slow burn; there is very little market for the latter and it’s also a reflection of the modern taste buds. Outside maybe indie artists, a lot of the stuff made for the mainstream to get over, need all the bells and whistles up-front. There are some rare exceptions though, e.g. Longlegs, highest grossing movie now for NEON.

It's a fairly low-budget cult film that not alot of people have seen or are aware of. I reckon you might be able to find it on YouTube.

very poor acting. looked like it was made by college students.

Wonder what the best pak horror movies there are out there

Lmao , that time it was a genre:Hindi had Veerana, Purana Mandir, Purani Haveli

What about Raaz 👀 a bit mainstream but it was good imo and the music 🔥🔥🔥 they don’t make em like that no more

Saw Smile again, wasn’t as good as first time but loved the thrills. @shaz619 recommend this one for the thrills

I reviewed the movie I think a few years back when it came back in this thread, I really enjoyed the mental health oriented themes and on the whole felt it was a lot of fun, though they went a bit OTT during the finishing stretch lol it was a big hit at the box office as well wasn’t it, hopefully will try to see part 2 as well.

I signed up to Disney recently due to an offer and also because last time round the horror content was good, but this time round it’s all a bit average, not much going on it seems on the surface lol

Ah am jealous, because MAX would be the first thing I sign up for ahead of everything else if it was available in the UK! so much high quality content and The Penguin series will be seriously good to

eagerly waiting for the second episode of the penguin.
the release is badly spaced. The first episode came out over 10 days ago.

Salem’s Lot - 7/10, Decent as a casual cheap scares horror flick. If you don’t take it too seriously and don’t question why they seem to move forward with their plans minutes before sunset it’s fine. I think if you read the book right before then it wont be so fun.

Smile 2 - 8.5/10, It actually improves upon the first movie and Naomi Scott put in a performance of a lifetime, it has to be one of the best outings for any actor or actress across genre’s all year. Again, similar themes revolving around mental health, isolation and internal despair. The movie kept me on edge throughout and it doesn’t really downshift at any point. The choreography was outstanding and just the way they shot key scenes so creatively to induce a response from the viewer.

Without going into too much detail, I recommend this @RedwoodOriginal @JaDed Originally I was meant to watch Speak No Evil but the timing for Smile 2 was more convenient and I watched it on the opening day, this horror franchise has been one of my favourites from this era. I’ve been trying not to think too much about the movie to sleep better in the night lol

@RedwoodOriginal How do you find Terrifier ?

After all this time I finally watched the first, think Art The Clown is certainly a mentally deranged individual, he doesn’t have a particular prop of choice but his signature move is disfiguring people’s faces for his pleasure. He doesn’t say a lot, nor can he be understood and that adds to his terror. The movie was a bit of a throwback slasher and I don’t mind that, the violence/gore is on another level lol I think it’s more disturbing then any of the SAW kills.

Am on the second movie now.

I genuinely think Naomi Scott should get nominated for an Oscar or Golden Globe, such was her performance, but the snobby attitudes towards the genre wont allow that, can’t recall the last time a horror movie or performance was recognised by any of the major award organisations.

Have you watched Smile 2 yet? thinking more on it, there are strong similarities with Darren Aronofsky’s Black Swan
not yet. been pretty busy for last few months. have only been watching the penguin these days apart from wwe.

I've made a point to avoid it. I think it goes too far for my taste. After a certain point it just becomes torture p*rn.

SAW for me atleast is still more slasher.

The Substance seems like another Titane. Arthouse horror is absolute garbage these days.

Some of these people need to watch more Ken Russell movies.

Yes lol defo not for everyone and it is certainly a bit too mad aha I was just curious because it apparently beat Joker 2 at the box office which had the powerful studio’s behind it and big marketing budget, yet got outperformed by some indie guys

It has a cult following for sure. I think even Jericho has a role in the latest one. He was bragging about it on Dynamite. But that's still impressive a pretty impressive showing at the box-office, even for a cult film.

Joker 2 seems like one of the worst movies ever lol.

I might see it for Demi Moore, who I have always had a massive crush on. But other than that, there is nothing that compels me to see this.

I just be curious like what are people actually interested in lol and they do say if you are writing or anything else you do it for yourself first, but I be interested in what the market is responding to, personally my initial response was like really? aha I wouldn’t go out of my way to watch it otherwise, same for that Freddie movie but that was a hit due to the games.

Am going to watch Joker & Megalopolis with a fresh mind when am able to and ignore whatever has been said so far

I think with this one its probably the graphic violence aspect coupled with a creepy clown. And creepy clowns can draw money in US. But then again I haven't seen the movies so can't say for sure.

The Freddie movie took a life of its own on the internet through memes and had certain B movie aspects which I can see appealing to some people.

For sure with Megalopolis. With Joker I had kinda already decided I wasn't gonna see it because its a musical and I hate musicals. Just seemed like an obvious cash grab attempt from the studio.

Yes I suppose, especially after the publication of King’s magnum opus IT.

Freddie wasn’t terrible by any stretch but I found it very generic.

Yeah that was my immediate reaction on Joker but then after a while I became curious about it and how it would be executed, and both the leads have decent pedigree as well. I will reserve my judgement until I see it.

Smile 1 was my fav horror movie of last decade, cant wait to see this.

We’ve discussed that movie quiet a few times in this thread lol really interested to see what you think of the second once you have

These are going back the last 2-3 years. Sorry if a bit long winded:

Moon - Don't recall too much of the plot but remember it was fairly moving as the main character gradually learns about his real identity. There's a few shows/films playing on similar themes involving dopplegangers, dual identities and so on. However Moon executes them impressively on a small budget. You don't need a million special effects or elaborate sets to tell a compelling story ! Kevin Spacey provides a voiceover in this hidden gem. 7.5/10.

Mike Bassett: England Manager - Still the ultimate football film, and certainly the most quotable. Ricky Tomlinson is brilliant in the lead role. Good for what it is, harmless fun. 6.5/10.

The Talented Mr Ripley - Was strangely conflicted between wanting the main character (played by Matt Damon) to get away with his ruse and being outed. The film dragged slightly in the first half but the plot is compelling with some intense scenes in the second half. 8/10.

The Stepfather (1987) - Based on a real murderer. A mediocre film. 5/10.

Platoon -
One of many Vietnam War based films of the era. Excellent and especially resonates today. Okay the characters are somewhat cartoon caricatures with the idealistic soldier vs the hardnosed realist. However the acting is superb and it sounded like they went through hell filming this. 8/10.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles - Loved this. There's so much silliness and hilarity, but when John Candy's character admits the truth about his situation, I was floored and genuinely shed a tear. 9/10.

Deliverance - Genuinely unsettling and of course THAT scene is shocking even today. Fantastic acting. 8/10.

Snowpiercer - Decent thriller with an intriguing premise but don't think I'll rewatch it. 6/10.

The Host - After Memories of Murder, I became a massive Bong Joon-Ho fan and although this isn't as good, it's one of the best monster movies I've seen. I LOVE the climactic battle with the hapless underdog fighting with what little he has against a vicious behemoth, accompanied by a wonderful musical score. 8/10.

They Live - Starring the late Roddy Piper who looked fairly healthy here compared to the indecipherable, babbling wreck he'd become. Intense fight scenes including one that went on for an eternity. Theme of the film certainly resonates today. 6.5/10.

Parasite - Returning to Bong Joon-Ho. Like most of his films, it features commentary on class divisions and is such an intense, well told story. 9/10.

Joint Security Area - A poignant film about a group of North and South Korean soldiers stationed on the DMZ who secretly befriend each other. Features the brilliant Song Kang-ho of Memories of Murder, Snowpiercer, The Host and Parasite. 7.5/10.

Beetlejuice (1988) - Enjoyed this and again falls into the category of harmless fun if not necessarily a film I'd rewatch. Features a young Alec Baldwin. 7/10.

@shaz619 I recently saw The Toolbox Murders. I had no idea this film existed or that it was directed by the late, great Tobe Hooper but it was freaking awesome. Would heavily recommend and I have a feeling you will like it. It came out in 2004 and is a remake of a film by the same name that came out in the 1970's. It's definitely one of the more underrated slashers I have come across in recent times.
