What was the last film you watched? (V2.0)

The Two Popes

Anthony Hopkins as Pope Benedict XVI and Jonathan Pryce as the future Pope Francis.

A battle of wills between the two clerics, which is at times very funny, sometimes harrowing, and often deeply moving.

It’s great. 9/10.

“Saint Maud”

Atmospheric, weird and disturbing.

Not sure precisely what my opinion of the film is yet, but I *think* it was good.

Barbarian.

Very weird and at times funny. Not a horror film though as advertised.

That's an indie horror film right? Do you recommend it?

Top Gun Maverick on 4K UHD BR. (Released 2 days ago).

Technical masterpiece.

IMAX scenes with Dolby ATMOS.

O.M.G.

10/10

(Extras are pretty decent)

The Dark Tower

A waste of Matthew Mcconaughey and Idris Elba.

5/10

Smile 7/10

Great thrills and acting wasn't corny , also an excellent climax.

I am a horror buff. So darkness and bleakness doesn't worry me.

It’s a must see movie for any horror fan. There are some reality based themes, I’d say surrounding mental health, redemption and faith. This isn’t as nuts as stuff you may have seen from the likes of A24 but it is of that ilk, and this British studio done a fantastic job.

Smile 7/10

I really enjoyed Smile. It was a thrilling experience indeed. It’s always interesting when they use the old “what happens when the doc may lose it” trope. The medical field around the world is gruelling and especially something like psychiatry, which must be very taxing. How one can keep themselves in good order takes a special skill.

Using the above to plot a horrifying story which again is reality based, is a great device which has been used so well in our time. I was on edge throughout, there is a scene or two I’d change towards the end but I’d be nitpicking really.

8/10 for me, genuine thrills and scares. The main cast are very good and potentially, from what I understand this all started from a 10 minute short and I think there is potential for more, the novelty may wear out critically but there will be some dough to be made going by the box office reception.

Will see it then.

Yes, I needed a day or two to reflect on this impressive independent feature (directorial debut for the filmmaker), but I am now recommending it in full. A very strong effort from all involved.

Have you seen The Ghost Writer? A very good British political thriller starring Ewan McGregor and Pierce Brosnan.

Ticket To Paradise

Clooney & Roberts cast.

Has its moments, but a low-key movie. Felt underwhelming in the end, but decent clean family movie.

5/10

"Halloween Ends". Michael Myers and older sister Laurie finally end there over 40 year fued that began with the original "Halloween" in 1978. Don't know why the film has so many critics. I like horror come slasher films:yasir

Yeah it’s one of the few horror/thriller hits of this year other being the “The barbarian” which I was unable to catch in theater.

I have to say i really liked the climax, pretty unique in its own way.

Check out Speak No Evil & The Dark And The Wicked.

Liked The Dark and the Wicked. Speak No evil is a Danish movie i think. Not understanding the language and reading the subs takes away the jump scares.

Have you seen The Prince Of Darkness(1987), Devil(2010) or Dead Silence (2007)?

Ticket To paradise, kinda loved this old school Hollywood story with George and Julia being amazing, I think I have reached the age where I find the new actors not as good as the old ones and found the movie engaging and hilarious.

8/10 for me (biased review, its 6.3 on imdb).

Speak No Evil is mostly English language. It’s a slow burn…and a must watch.

Yes I have seen all of the above mentioned.

The Barbarian 8/10, excellent direction perfect thrills ,humor and the camera angles were almost Tarantinoish. Well done by everyone involved.

On my list, better than smile as a horror?

There Will Be Blood

A strangely amoral tale with a couple of outstanding acting performances including DDL of course.

Notable and jarring score by Johnny-Greenwood-out-of-Radiohead.

8 / 10

I like the opening scene where he is just a small time prospector, finds the silver, and crawls out of the hole with his smashed leg & all the way to the village to claim his reward. It’s like Hades climbing out of the underworld, just in time to wreak his havoc on Earth for the remainder of the film.

Beast 7/10 had few thrills!

Wakanda forever-7.5/10, not as good as the first one but loved the Mayan civilization

She Said 8/10, absolutely amazing but knew would bomb at the box office.

can someone recommend me some good rom-com with A list actors, i cant find a decent rom-com which were made in the late 90s.

btw what the hell with this all action movies these days, the plot mainly are same, Hero's sister/daughter/niece got kidnapped and hes on mission to recover her .

I wonder if the metaphor can be extended to the other characters?

There is a rich trove of religious analogy in the film, I find it so fascinating. Need to watch it again now!

10 things I hate about you. One of my favorites growing up.
Jerry Maguire.
That Thing You Do. More of a film about music though.

Not 90s actually but I love them
Music and Lyrics
Love Actually
Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist
Yes Man
500 Days of Summer (my favorite romcom of all time)

The thing I don't like About DDL movies is that it's so heavily focused on acting that entertainment tends to become secondary in his films. Quite possibly the greatest actor though.

Just a couple as I was testing my klipsch promedia speakers.
The exam 6.5/10 - meh ending
The guest (2014) 9/10 - good movie

Finally watched The Batman.

Enjoyed it although I didn't think it was the best Batman film.

I didn't like the acting of the guy who played Batman and the way he spoke.

Halloween ends 5/10.

Ridiculous and silly made in such a hurry with terrible editing.

What a way to end a legendary franchise , Universal Pictures are having a terrible time this year contrast to Paramount who have had the best summer.

Pan’s Labyrinth - 10/10

One of the greatest movies of all time. So rich in atmosphere with a deep and emotionally charged narrative. The two biggest themes for me were hope and despair during the Spanish civil war . It establishes the perfect mix between fantasy and harsh reality, I don’t think dark fantasy has ever been done better. Del Toro provides his answers to some questions to but I’d ignore those because art is open to interpretation and I took the events a little differently. A must watch, it’s on both Netflix and Amazon Prime.

Super creepy. Del Toro has a marvellous visual imagination.

Awesome movie, I heard Pinocchio also by Toro is amazing as well.

Avatar 8.5/10, amazing CGI it’s so remarkable I don’t even know how it makes it a visual spectacle, absolutely loved the graphics creatures, story obviously is almost predictable but the direction is amazing.

The vfx of every Superhero movie looks terrible after watching Avtaar.

Finally watched The Batman.

Enjoyed it although I didn't think it was the best Batman film.

I didn't like the acting of the guy who played Batman and the way he spoke.

I liked it. Not sure about Emo Bruce, but I loved the muscle car Batmobile and fresh take on Catwoman and The Riddler.

Wonder how they will work it into the Flash movie? I read that both Batfleck and the new guy will appear.

Nothing worse than Bale’s horrible voice in The Dark Knight & Rises. Pattinson is a superior Batman.

Nah it’s Affleck & Keaton. Pattinson’s The Batman will remain a seperate entity while James Gunn is rebooting the whole of DCEU.

True masterpiece. Watched it at the cinema..I had to force my friends to come with me as they thought it looks rubbish. Since then we have watched it countless times.

Pinocchio completes Del Toro’s trilogy of war time horror/fantasy (The Devil’s Backbone, Pan’s Labyrinth & Pinocchio).

I am yet to see Pinocchio, what did you guys make of it?

I’ve also seen his anthology series (Cabinet of Curiosities) which was brilliant, especially for any fan of HP Lovecraft

Athena

Very disturbing movie with lots of long shots. Starts with an 11 minute single shot with complex choreography. Brilliant score as well. Can be found in netflix.

Although I liked the film overall, but there are a few things I don't think suit the ethos of Batman.

1. Bruce Wayne is the most measured and mature superhero in DC who more often than not sees everything coming and finds a way to get ahead of the villain by the end. Here, Bruce basically played to the beat of Riddler. Every thing Riddler wanted to make happen, did happen by the end and Bruce was unable to prevent the death of Falcone as well which will create a power vacuum leading to The Penguin rising in the crime hierarchy. Bruce wasn't able to figure out Riddler's plan till the end. So I'd say he didn't end up changing the course of Gotham or get the win in the movie here (especially when he's already beaten Joker once as implied by the deleted scene).

2. Secondly, Batman is supposed to be the beacon of hope in a city that is engulfed in darkness. The positivity and the "things will get better" is lacking. Even by the end, when Selina leaves and Bruce is the sole superhero left, there isn't really any indication of Bruce being the guy who will "save" the city once something bad happens again. It's just that he'll try to prevent it and will probably fail.

3. The character of Alfred is supposed to be the guiding light for Bruce and someone who he can confide in. Here, Alfred was a battered ex soldier who is unable to understand Bruce and Bruce is sort of an emo adolescent. None of them get each other. We don't really know why Alfred is loyal to Wayne family. It's just him trying to figure Bruce out and Bruce shunning him. I have always liked Alfred a bit more royal. I'd say, I would have liked Hugh Laurie or Ralph Fiennes in that role more.

Modern takes on Alfred posit him as a military-trained battlefield medic - which is how Bruce gets patched up between fights.

Have you seen the Harley Quinn animated show? Their Bruce / Batman is more traditional. Their Catwoman is my favourite of all versions - she’s very charismatic and aloof, and Poison Ivy has a girl crush on her.

Yes they do. But I feel making Alfred at his age an old badass vet sort of a character isn't quite right. I like Alfred as someone who reasons with Bruce, someone who knows that even though he is not Bruce's father but he is the only family he has.

Yes I have. Kevin Conroy and Jason O Mara have been my favorite animated Bruce Waynes.

The thing I love the most about DC and especially Gothamverse is that it's not the protagonists but the multilayered and exciting antagonists. Very much Lovecraftian traits in the villains. Mad Hatter is someone I'd love to see in a live action Batman film.

Avatar 2 - As a visual spectacle the greatest thing I've ever seen. Must be seen in a quality theatre, IMAX preferably. The world of Pandora is just WOW WOW WOW, I will watch the featurettes about the planet if they come out like they did for the first.

The story was average, mostly predictable. It definitely dragged and I hope the next releases are no more than 2hrs15. They can always create extended versions and director's cuts for extra money in the future but the main theatrical release can't be 3 hrs.

I'd give it 3* out of 5*. I definitely think the IMDB score of 8.0 will come down, it's not that good.

I also have a feeling I know what the next movie/s will show us, but I don't want to give any spoilers.

All Quiet on the Western Front

The 2022 German remake. Four schoolmates join the German Army in the last days of the Great War, struggling to survive the mechanised horror as the politicians seek peace at any price.

A bit overlong, with pastoral passages as the four young men chase French girls and read letters from home.

The climactic minutes left me desolated as a nationalist General orders one last attack before the ceasefire, young men forced into bloodlust to try to survive as the minutes and finally the seconds tick down.

Chilling, powerful, shaming and damning.

8/10.

Crash (1996)

A very adult look into urban alienation and sexual boredom amongst the white western middle classes, and one potentially deadly route that their never-ending thrill seeking pursuit could end up heading down in a complex world where we are increasingly dependent on technology.

I am not sure if there has ever been another film like this. David Cronenberg is one of my favourite directors and he loves the “body horror”. This film’s musical score is strange and brilliant, the actors are very convincing, and it’s a perfect 90 minute length.

Five stars!

I've been watching the Harry Potter films recently :)

I've watched them in the past but a long time ago.

Always good fun to watch.

The one with Thandiwe Newton? Yes, very good.

Finally watched Top Gun Maverick.

Many callbacks to the Tony Scott original - the brash jocks, the bar scene, the beach sport, the old F-14. Our hero remains riddled with self-doubt, still trying to prove himself worthy, facing the end of his career as a fighter pilot, nearing obsolescence due to the relentless march of tech.

It’s a little predictable - man with experience and guts overcomes superior machines; wounded hero gains closure - but the sheer exuberance carries you with it, with Ed Harris doing his cold hard act, Jon Hamm as a tough-as-nails Admiral, and Cruise understated and excellent as ever. I found myself caught in the moment, roaring Maverick and Phoenix and their wingmen on.

Brilliant flying sequences.

One of those rare sequels that outdoes the original. Had I seen it at the cinema I might have given it more than….

Val Kilmer's Ice Man was the best part about the film for me.

Hocus Pocus 2.

Not as good as the original but I liked it. Made me feel young again (sort of).

The Duke

A comedy about the true story of an art heist in 1961 Britain. Starts Jim Broadbent and Helen Mirren. The period is brilliantly evoked on a slim budget. A cheery little tale on a rainy New Year’s Day.

7/10.

Avatar 2 - A pioneering visual spectacle, the underwater scenes were breathtaking and the world building of Pandora is stunning. The narrative was bland but well executed. However, no movie in a theatre should ever be 3 hours long. 6.5/10

Avatar The Way of Water

Really enjoyed it particularly in 3D and Imax.

3 or so hours but it didn't drag.

One Upon a Time in Hollywood

DiCaprio and Pitt wander through late sixties Hollywood with the shadow of the Sharon Tate murders looming up.

A bit slow and meandering at times, probably would have benefited from fifteen minutes of edits, but usually interesting with a big climax.

7/10

Fall

For best friends Becky and Hunter, life is all about conquering fears and pushing limits. However, after they climb 2,000 feet to the top of a remote, abandoned radio tower, they find themselves stranded with no way down. Now, their expert climbing skills are put to the ultimate test as they desperately fight to survive the elements, a lack of supplies, and vertigo-inducing heights.

It was ok. One of those films that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

5/10

Batman Begins, still one of the best origin stories out there.

Luther: The Fallen Sun

A serial killer terrorizes London while disgraced detective John Luther sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.

It was ok. I didn't think it was as good as the series.

A bit of a weak storyline

5/10

Watched Luther: The Fallen Sun.

It was okay. Storyline gave away the killer far too early. This would've been a better movie if killer wasn't revealed so soon.

I give it 6 out of 10.

Bandit.

Interesting watch and based on true story but a bit too long.

6/10

The Flash - A fun popcorn action movie, nicely layered with dynamic characters and a decent plot, visually it was made well to. It’s arguably the best movie in the now defunct DC Universe. Keaton was superb in his role and a pure natural to play Batman, the character recognised the time that had passed and reacted in a humanistic manner. 8/10
JaDed what did you think?

Outta nowhere Scooby Doo and Courage the Cowardly dog. A weird crossover that could have been a lot of fun but they didn't execute it well.

So I was taken along to watch Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani.

I'd heard good things about both of the main actors in it so went along hoping that I'd see a decent film.

What transpired was sheer boredom. A confusing storyline that seemed to try to give out too many messages. The film went on and on and on. It was the longest 2 or so hours of my life.

The main actor tried to be funny, but wasn't really. Even the main actress seemed bored with the storyline.

Awful film - only one good thing, the song in the snow by Arijit Singh.
