What will MS Dhoni's batting role now be in ODIs?

Will we get to see the batting he displayed during his starting years (like the 183 against Sri Lanka). He became more of a grafter/finisher due to captaincy burden. Now, will Virat ask him to bat freely? Is it possible for him to suddenly change his batting style?
 
Free flowing batting is not like some switch that can be turned off or on.

The old Dhoni is gone.

The aged Dhoni may show glimpses of old Dhoni but he will remain aged Dhoni only.
 
I actually want him to bat at number six and play the hard hitting role I don't think at this age he should bat at number 4 because he won't have stamina to run between the wickets

He is not playing test, no more keeping for 140 odd overs so hardly 20 odd odi in year, stamina should not be problem

yes but you still won't except 35 year old to be accumulator and run like a kohli or rahane to convert ones to twos dhoni looks much batter when he attacks the opposition
 
He is showing what his present batting ability is..just unable to middle the bat. .past the prime
 
Wouldn't want him to bat anywhere under 5. He's still an awesome batsmen and with the keeping load off of him, I expect him to be as agile and strong as ever. I fear, however, his average of 50 may go down batting up the order.
 
He bats higher, he would suck the momentum.

He bats lower, he couldn't finish.

Thats one nice riddle for Kohli to solve :40:

If Dhoni plays at 6, he will lose us a lot of games due to age.

Dhoni should be given a couple of series at 4 and Kohli has already said what he expects of him. Free flowing batting, so if Dhoni sucks momentum, he will obviously have to retire. I guess Australia series will decide his ticket to CT or not.

I wont write him off unlike a few others though, because I don't have a crystal ball and a poor year or period post 30 doesn't really mean players are past it. Losing captaincy could be just what Dhoni needs to have a refreshed start and he can probably play on for another 2 years, or he could just fade away quickly but he deserves a shot till Australia series at least.

Everyone is underestimating Dhoni here. He is still our second best batsman behind Kohli.
 
he can certainly score as quickly as anyone at the top order. more important question is, who can do his previous role at 6? i haven't seen anyone yet.

No way.he takes too many balls to settle there by killing momentum in both setting targets and chases as he doesnt have the finese to manouvre the ball

it was part of his role at 6 to play riskless at first. he still has one of the highest SRs in the team. The bit in bold is just plain wrong.
 
Next couple of years , play up the order ..no pressure , ample time to settle down get those big scores which the "fans" love anyway .
We have had 2 batsmen in Virat and MSD who understand the art of chasing , the rest are just capable of playing supporting roles . if we do lose MSD at this stage , it will be a lot of pressure on Virat alone .
 
MSD is a great chaser in general but except for one knock in WC 2011, he never even clicked in any world tournaments.

Was a passenger.

If he had a bad team like SRT had in 90s, people would call him a choker cos India would have never reached the finals in the first place.

Its like a Gilly scenario but much worse.

Kohli flopped in a lot of tournaments in ODI but was a super clutch bat in World T20. Just a matter of time before he clicks in WC or his legacy will take a hit.
 
In general, Kohli has been such a supreme clutch player that he doesn't need a lot of successful WCs to prove his worth.

Just one stellar one.

Absolutely. i cant understand the hype that he is a greatest finisher as he has nothing to show for his finishing abilities in god knows how many icc cups he has played.indian wins in icc tournaments is masking his abilities as a player because his performances are abysmal in any which way u look them.

MSD should bat up high. Take a few balls to settle down and then go berserk.

I think he realized that and Kohli has indicated the same.

I think he is going to play till CT as there is not much time left. Depending on team's performance and his own his future will be decided. I somehow think he will retire after CT, so that Pant gets a good amount of ODI's before next world cup.

Sachin and Yuvi alone mate ,Gauti played many ICC T20 tournaments not great in many also not one ton in any ICC tournament,he has been consistent and that's good but even Dhawan played a great part in 2013 ICC champ trophy and was pretty decent in 2015 doesn't mean he is good.

Sachin and Yuvi probably were the most talented Indian players in last 2 decades mate,who were trained young by the best coaches not easy to replicate that,Dhoni is unlike that.

Gambhir played a starring role in both finals he played in.infact his batting against pak in t 20 final is what took us a respectable total

Please understand my point.i am questioning his icc performances only because if we take jamodis into consideration then nobody will be a patch on kohlis ,abd,amlas performances in them

Yes and i feel ICC its only Sachin and Yuvi,infact Yuvi is one player who has performed in U-19 2011 and 2007 t20 WC,he has a higher ceiling than Sachin LOI in crunch situations and him performing has always made us win but surprisingly if i say the captain of two tournaments was Dhoni and lets not go into that route again.

As i said don't feel Indian players have done that well in ICC overall where they could change match situations except Sachin and Yuvi,Gauti has always been only a contributor(defn better than Dhoni but below par).

He'll bat at 4 i think. Needs to be able to rotate strike and also be able to hit boundaries when set. India can't afford him to suck the momentum out of the innings as they don't have a finisher to drag things back.

Nope, the only reason why Indian fans dislike him now as a batsman is because of his decline, doesn't have the reflexes anymore to bat as he would want and hence stalls at critical junctures of matches.

Great players (which Dhoni is in LOIs - ATG) are not remembered for how they played during their decline but rather their performance during their pomp, when they were on top of their game - as Dhoni will be remembered for being able to play the free-flowing anchor role where he would take control of the majority of the innings and also later on in his career, when he became the calm and calculated finisher - epitomised by his performance in the 2011 WC final.

No bro. they are not. MS is still the 2nd or 3rd best batsman of this team. After Kolhi and perhaps after KL Rahul. I think he will play more freely now only concentrating on his batting and keeping. His knock of 68 in 40 balls vs England in practice match shows how good he is. Perhaps now he will bat well.

Rohit sharma my friend is a clear definition of flat track bully ,manish pandey is still miles behind dhoni as a batsman and kl Rahul is yet to be tested in high pressure matches and situations he was tested once in that semi final in IPL last year once and what he did is clear choke dhoni no doubt is our best WK and second best loi batsman..

If rohit is a flat track bully then what has dhoni ever done out of india?he was instrumental in winning champions trophy along with dhawan,scored 4 centuries in australia.we can talk when dhoni scores any where near his numbers.

So everybody is a choker other than the great dhoni who is the epitome of chokery by his disappearing acts in every icc tournaments .what has dhoni done in the past 4 yrs to win matches on his own ? He lost more than dozen matches which india should have won.there is a separate thread to highlight his failures while chasing ?in what way is dhoni the second best indian player? Rohit,dhawan has superior records than him in that period.everybody knows ours is top heavy and particularly top 3 dependent team

Against the same c grade attack ms dhoni lost run a ball chasable match with his tuk tuk . Dhoni failed to chase against f grade zimbabwe side,rabada made a fool out of him as could not finish the match with nine runs needed after rohit a magnificient 150 in the same match.so please stop hyping this nothing player as the best or second best as he us clearly not.if u want i will post u more than 10 games in the last 2 yrs which dhoni lost due to his tuk tuking and not finishing matches in which required rate is less than 6

The same rohit scored 140 against starc,hazlewood,faulkner and other main bowlers in triseries before worldcup when no one reached 50 in that innings.dhoni cannot play an innings like that even in his dreams

my friend those bilateral series matches are not as important as wordcup or any other ICC events always remember Bigger player always performs in bigger matches.. hence making our country proud that's why players like tendu dravid ganguly sehwag inzi dhoni currently kohli Williamson root and smith are on different level then players like Rohit and the rabada you mentioned has defiantly made dhoni struggle because rabada is a world class bowler not like srilankas eranga or Aussies Boland , Richardson's or any other windies trundler which your overrated rohit feasts on :srini

The same rohit is responsible for india winning the tri series against australia as his partnership with sachin in the first final was crucial in india winning it.show me one innings in his entire career where dhoni performed against teams like sa,aus,eng outside of india and even in india where he is responsible for india winning

What has dhoni done in his entire icc career other than a fluke final innings ? He is the biggest choker in indian team when it comes to performances in icc tournaments.he is a dismal failure in icc tournaments br it one day world cup,t 20,champioms trophy.please show me those performances of the supposed bigger player in icc tournament?

Atleast rohit is some bully and not like a player who disappears in entire icc tournaments.if dhonis 50 is great what about rohits 50 against southafrica in 2007 world cup when nobody scored more than 30 in that match when u r so called bigger player done a dissappearing act the whole tournament?

If just one innings of dhoni makes him a bigger player then what what about yuvraj who has so many great performances and gambhir who played 2 magnificient innings in both finals.dhoni is not even 10 percent a player of yuvraj

that innings (cant remeber exact figure) in trination final vs SL in wi including 15 runs in final over
I can fill this thread with master knocks of dhoni
these few knocks on crucial stages are more important then someone going for personal milestone

So from icc tournaments u r shifting to bilaterals because u have nothing to show for it right?what about so many other icc tournaments where he couldnt do zilch ? U downgraded rohits performances as meaningless bilaterals but now posting useless bilateral performances of dhoni to highlight him? Why the double standards ?rohit only played one oneday world cup and he scored a century in the quarterfinal where dhoni done a disappearance act and without that innings india would have lost

He is a failure because others has to cover up for his dismal performances .even in the final its not the main act.it was done by gambhir

wow you're talking as if the great single handedly guided us in the semis... the sharma is a blatant failure against quality fast bowlers and difficult pitches that hundred you talking was against poor inexperienced Afghanistan he was made to be look like a fool by haz and starc in the semi and it was dhoni who at least gave glimps of hope in that semi

Cute deflection, refer 2012 Nagpur test for a pathetic innings to save one's hide as the Test captain, it lost us a chance for substantial first innings lead seeing the pace at which he snailed through & then got horribly run out to get to a milestone!

So what happened in 2007 one day,2007 t 20 ,2009t 20,champions trophy im south africa,srilanka t 20,bangladesh t 20,eng champions trophy,2015 wc,2016 t 20 cup in india ? So we have to forget about his dismal performances in so many icc tournaments but be grateful for his fluke innings in the final of 2011wc in which he is an abysmal failure where he couldnt reach 20 runs in almost 10 matches played right?

Absolutely he is the most selfish,cunning to the core,morally corrupt player who is involved in corrupt csk practices and whose name is withheld from come out of sealed envelope submitted to the supreme court inorder to restore faith in indian cricket.his fans has the gall to question others on personal milestones.he shamelessly continued as a test captain whitewash after whiteshashes just for his personal bank account sake when he is not even demands a spot as a player let alone captain.he is no saint as his fans make out of him

yes dhoni failed against Bangladesh I agree but so as Rohit you know why?? because by no means the wickets in ban were flat and attack of ban with takin rubel and fizz made Rohit look like a fool now if ever had ban provided a flat surface to Rohit with and attack of masrafee shaful Islam then Rohit would have scored 300 in odi

I hate some of his fans but let's stick to cricket here.

In our part of the world if you have money/power you can get away even for murder heck genocide, for all his ills he's done less harm to India than say the Gandhi's (them fake ones) :ehh

Yeah rohit and dhawan made u a fool by tonking the same players and posting a century partnership in semis.u may be in a parallel world in which dhoni is performing in every match but in real world he played for his personal average by tuk tuking with rahane and sucking the momentum openers gave to the team.please come to the real world man

Jus's watch the latest video of virat kohli describing dhoni and then call him selfish dear friend
and you know who is selfish when you score 174 something against c Aussie attack but still loose the match

I am strictly talking about icc tournaments only and not useless jamodis.please show me his great performances in icc cups as u say as he is a big game player according to u? We proved u wrong that he is no big game player as shown by his dismal performances

What crucial innings ? A 45 against the worst team of tournament ?if his 45 is so crucial then what about rohits 140 against ban in quarters? For a player who played nearly 10 icc tournaments the best ucan get is a 45 against mighty west indies then i am afraid u have no leg to stand on

The 45 unbeaten against WI, minus Pollard & Bravo, was crucial because we wanted to top the pool? So that we could face Aus in the semis, anything you missed?

Any other innings of substance that come to mind?
