What's so special about Sohail Tanvir? | Tanvir vs Akhtar vs Anybody Else

look at his average and strike rate...

Yeah I looked at them more than once!
There is many many better records than him in Pakistan.

I am not saying he is not better than Sohail Tanveer, but Junaid Khan has done nothing special to play the world cup, especially with no international cricket for him.

and what exactly has sohail tanvir done to play in the world cup?

Sohail Tanveer's previous performances with Pakistan team were good with the ball, especially with the new ball, and we needed a new ball bowler.
His batting was also good for a tailender and suited for ODI cricket.
Since his comeback he was doing good at domestic level so you could have imagine he will be the same he was, but unfortunately he is, at least so far, no way as good as he was.

Pakistan have missed a trick by not playing Rana Naved. He is good with the new ball, a proven performer in the subcontinent. On top of that he is pretty handy with the bat no doubt.

Tanvir is also pretty useful with the bat , no doubt. He needs to play a few more games to get into better bowling frame of mind.

In ODI these days you need your number 8 and 9 to be okay with the bat.

Rana and Tanvir are pretty similar in bowling as both dont have any express pace (altho Rana was hitting 90mph at some point in his life)

i can see him getting butchered spraying around the new ball at 77mph. he won't even get much swing in asia

That is a better suggestion, you can comepare both player.
Rana has played enough international cricket, he could have been useful. But you just don't select an uncapped player for a world cup.
And everyone is not :amir

If he bowls like he did in this series so far, then i totally agree with you.
But him being selectd over Junaid Khan is 100% justified.
Maybe Rana Naved, Yasir Arafat could have been selected.

he would not need to bat like that at the end if his bowling was not so garbage

Lol why does Afridi love him? I have noticed that too he seems to like the guy also he dyed his hair too and had haircut as well just like Freedi

Yes I am watching every ball from the start.
Just missed one ball, the Shehzad wicket ball...
It was a poor ball, but by no mean the worst ball.

yar kehne do is bichare k kehne se kia hojaega :D

Sohail seems to be getting picked on past reputation. His bowling is wayward and lacks any pace. It makes me laugh when the commentators say he's bowling too many slower balls. When has he bowled a quicker one??

I just don't understand how after so long out of the game this guy has been handed a spot in the WC squad, even with the new ball he looks like cannon fodder. I hope he improves because if this is as quick as he can bowl then he is going to get murdered by genuine quality teams in the WC.

Can Sohail Tanvir Swing the Ball in to a Right Hander?

could somebody please help me out with this burning question that is causing endless sleepless nights. Can this guy bring the ball into right handers..ala a vaas or aamir??.

i remember last year in the newzealand home series that this was a question being asked by the commentators regarding aamer as he didnt show it enough... But by the england series Aamir displayed this skill to devestating effect. i am just curious if sohail can do it at all and have we seen him do it much in the current series? if not wont he be a liablity in the world cup. i appreciate all the negative posts about him but feel this must be a major shortcoming in the left handers armoury.

I haven't seen him move the ball once, and I thought he was a swing bowler, so I don't know, he is unfit imo.

He swings it away a touch. The only time I've seen him bringing the ball into the batsman is when he comes round the wicket and then it's just the angle, not swing.

some swing away from lefties over the wicket

Tanvir bowled amazingly well in 2007 at the T20 WC in SA. I think he is a great potential with an awesome action. He just needs to learn control and he can be a legend.

sohail tanvir's pace hasnt dropped. i thought it did didnt he sue to bowl 140+?

What happened to his pace? I am sure he used to be quicker than this, he is barely hitting the deck in the games so far in this series.

Well in a way its a good sign as it makes the path easier for Akhtar in which bowler to replace with. I can't seem to understand the reason for Tanvir's selection whether he was picked in terms of having developed more varieties or just on reputation. However, I think he should still play the next game in order to understand his skill better.

No he did not lol. It's very tough to consistently generate over 135ks with such an airy-fairy action.

It's not that different to Wasim Akram's. I am pretty sure he used to bowl quicker than the 120k/h's he's generating at the moment.

Wasim Akram's action was a lot different, as was his build. I'm not sure where the similarities are, can you elaborate?

Both actions are side on. Yes, both have quick arms, that's about the only thing similar apart from them being left handed. Wasim Akram generated pace off the last 3 or so steps of his run and bowled on the run (this is why he sometimes used to jog in before exploding at the crease). Tanvir sprints to the wicket and ONLY uses his arm. Notice how he hardly ever bends his back.

thanks for the video clips. well i wouldnt want to get into who is better or who should replace him. suffice to say he is there and has to do a job, but from apart from the fact that pace is useful though not everything i believe as a minimum a left hander ought to be able to swing the ball both ways. when his bowling arm is close to the stumps (over the wicket) can he swing the ball into a right hander? tbh, i know he has been getting a lot of stick but the first over he bowled tin the 4th odi, over the wicket to right hander, he landed on a full/good length and slanted away further. but i just feel if he could bring swing the ball in, then the batsmen wouldnt shuffle to off and be more careful with him. also would get more lbw's. if he cant do this and nobody has ever seen him do it then surely he is gonna be a real liablity..?

he is coming back from injury, something almost everyone on PP has forgotten. It was a long term injury and of course it will take time for him to fully recover. He used to hit 130+ easily.

He's already a tape ball legend......dont think it can go further than that

I cant see Shoaib Akhter playing even though Tanvir was once again useless and expensive with the ball.
Tanvir is only a one dimensional player.
Cant believe he is selected ahead of Akhter once again

Are you serious? How has Sohail Tanvir proved his critics wrong? Would you mind posting his BOWLING stats for the last game?
Not sure why everyone is picking on Tanvir:

Tanvir: 9-0-67-0
Gul: 7-0-49-0
Southee: 10-0-70-0

It was a flat wicket, and that's about it. At least the guy won us the match with his tail-end hitting.

Due to this thread being created, I have a feeling Sohail Tanvir will bowl beautifully in the World Cup.

lol perhaps! so many people, myself including, were criticizing misbah and he comes up with a wonderful performnace....

What the stats don't show is how much he was hammered early on, and he only improved his stats when NZ were 79 for 5 and he was asked to come on and get his overs through as even if we sent half our team off the field the NZ batsmen would not have hit out at that time...

when you take out time from stats, they can paint misleading pictures... everyone knows he was the weak link in our bowling in the last match... had NZ collapse not happened his figures would have been a lot worse...

Dude , r u high? his action is a bit similar to Mushtaq Ahmad's leg spin bowling .. but no where even close to wasim bhais action

I'm sorry, but can you post your "time included" stats for Gul and Southee? Does it matter Southee got hit by Tanvir for 14 in the end vs Guptill hit Tanvir in the beginning? Is the "precious" first-ten-over-powerplay run counted twice in the score vs the 49th-over match winning "garbage"?

Had ahmed shehzad, or Younis khan bowled when Nz were 79 for 5 and just looking to keep wickets from falling their bowling stats would have been good too, doesn't mean they are great bowlers, or that they performed well with the ball...

the usual straw-man garbage, not even understanding a point before replying to it...

I'm afraid, sir, you don't have a point at all.

Tanvir bowled when NZ were 61 for 3 and then bowled again when NZ were 172 for 6.

Gul bowled when NZ were 72 for 4.

Southee bowled when Pakistan were 218 for 6, having lost 3 key wickets for 30 odd runs.

So, before calling your sensational claims a "point", spend a minute and look up what actually happened in the match.

Tanvir should be no where near the starting 11 in the world cup.
Hes going to take a beating of a life time if he does play.

i have been reading ur posts n finaly got to a result u need a long sound sleep sweet dreams:afridi

teera is a good bowler. i hope if he plays in next match he will perform because his tail will be up after playing last odi's knock. he can be good at the end of the innings but he still has to prove it.

Do we really need to take the tool Sohail Tanvir to WC? Is there still hope?

He is really a baggage as far as i am concerned. How will he be threatening at all in the flat wickets of WC? Ryder is not even trying to hit him hard. It's just so natural and trivial to hit this guy for sixes

Why could we not have taken Junaid Khan instead? A surprise Package who can actually - god forbid - swing the ball with decent pace?

Indeed Junaid should've been picked ahead, but Afridi bums off Tanvir like he did Shahzaib.

What is a 'Tanvir lover'? LOL, do those even exist? I think any of this breed, if there are any, would struggle to fit their cricketing knowledge on the back of a postage stamp. I'd be surprised if many people think this guy can be a long term threat with his 70mph floaty scattergun bowling, this is the same NZ that lost to BD let us not forget. Even Irfan was better.. and that's saying something.

yes there're couple of his lovers  who can be found in this thread. One is defo ManHoos...easy one to find.

Who has heard of Junaid Khan? He is nobody, he has no name, and you want him to go to the World Cup?

:)) FAIL. it saddens me to see tanvir ahmed warming the bench after doing well and being overlooked for the world fast bowler in our history.

afridi loves tanvir because of his experience and the fact that he can bat a bit. oh well, going in with 10 players never helps.

Who has heard of Junaid Khan? He is nobody, he has no name, and you want him to go to the World Cup?

You are totally right

Please forgive me of my ignorance

I forgot that Sohail Tanvir is a known face in cricket and his name sends shudders down the spine of international cricketers. We certainly cannot ignore that dreaded face as we prepare for the WC

pitch is too slow that is the reason look at shoaib gul bowling this wicket is too slow

NZ pitches can never suit him, he is the bowler of sub con pitches, when its hot, he's in rhythm, this white cream in windy conditions is not his game

if he can't bowl in new zealand, he can't bowl anywhere. he'll be worse on flat tracks at 123kmh with no swing, seam or bounce and spraying it all over the place. he must be the worst medium paced, because they're usually known for their control as they have no pace.

lol are you serious? look at their figures and compare them with sohail's, notice anything different?
HELLO are you high or wat ryder is a dynamite no wonders may on his day he can murder M asif OR M amir so its not the issue seriously wicket is too slow today

Zalmo Qazi aa raha hai Sohail Tanvir will prove himself oneday he is working hard

hmmm i guess so, it must be ryder or the wicket making him bowl wide, short, too full, slow etc.

he should not get any game in WC on current form. Start with Abdul Razzaq instead.

I think Sarfraz was right.

Tanvir's selection must have been fixed.

No other way to explain such a nonsense bowler getting into the WC squad out of nowhere.

Whenever Sarfraz fights with her wife Tv pay aa k doosray logo pay tanqeed kar daita hai:yk

dont see akhtar or tanvir making the 11 anyway...wahab and gul will b the main bowlers.....ajmal or rehman will come in for tanvir and akhtar

Gul
Wahab
Rehman/ Ajmal
Afridi
Razzaq
Hafeez

Tanvir will get injured. Not a worry. :akhtar
Well to be honest Shoaib will get injured coz Afridi already said before that after every match he ask shoaib tumharay goday gittay to khairyat say hain na:akhtar

I agree. WIsh we could had AMIR. but glad to see WAHAB RIAZ is still dere as he was rested today but hopefullly in WC our bowling attack will be the same with just replacing tanvir by RIAZ and we have a good bowling attack and dont know how REHMAN will fit in as one batsmen has to be lesser and rehman could get a chance
