A cricket match between India and Pakistan is nothing less than war, former India opener Virender Sehwag said on Friday. Speaking to reporters at an event, Sehwag brushed aside queries on whether he intended to join politics with jestful remarks. He stressed that people should vote for a leader who is decisive, though he refused to take any name. Asked if India should play Pakistan in the World Cup, he said, “There are two points which are discussed, whether we should have a war with Pakistan or not (and whether we should play Pakistan).”

“That is also one point that is discussed. We should do whatever is good for the country’s welfare. When India and Pakistan play a match, it is nothing less than a war. We should win the war, not lose it,” he told reporters at Goa Fest, an annual event organised by advertising associations.

The World Cup will be played in England and Wales between May 30 and July 14 this year.

Facing a volley of questions on ongoing Lok Sabha polls, Sehwag said, “I feel a leader should have the courage to take decisions, quick decisions in the interest of the country, in the interest of the Army and the interest of the police.”

He said if people started voting for leaders and not on the basis of party lines, then “half the leaders” wouldn’t get elected.

“They (the leaders) get elected because people vote for the party. The person who can take decisions should get elected, irrespective of which party he is from,” he claimed.

He said the police and the Army should not be kept “suppressed”, adding that he wanted the country to prosper and not “any particular person”.

Asked if he intended to join politics, Sehwag quipped, “I have always worked on contract. Right from Ranji to the IPL (Indian Premier League), whichever party gives me a good contract, I will join.”

On a lighter note, he added, “The contract should not be less that Rs 100 crore.

There will not be a better depiction of the current hypernationalist and xenophobic sentiment that runs deeply through the current political scenario in India than the mindset shown by Sehwag.

Can you blame him? Look at how successful Trump was in stoking up nationalism in order to gain power for himself. Being hateful works.

Still searching for something new, this is the same things that gets said everytime we are going to face eachother in cricket

It sure does.. if you want to win, just pick the nation’s biggest weaknesses or concerns, identify a target and start dumping all the blame for those concerns or weaknesses on the target.. you just have to find a target for all that hatred and frustration, throw in social media wide campaign of hateful rhetoric, and voila!!!!

Trump is the master of that stuff and Modi is learning!

"Indian cricketers are more professional than our players..."

What a stupid thing to say, especially with what just recently happened

Sehwag's India can try enforcing war on us. We will happily take two points if they want to boycott the WC match. As always India is just empty talk good at blowing hot air, they will do neither of the two. He will be humiliated again after his now infamous "baap baap hota hai" comment in the Champions Trophy!! His face was reaching his ankles after the final!!:)):)):))

And, some posters here wants to believe that Pak-Ind contest is no longer a big draw in India and people hardly care about it on that side of the border.

Virender Sehwag in an interview:

“In 2004 we went to Pakistan and our second Test was in Lahore. I bought 30 to 35 suits for my mother, sisters, aunts etc. When I went to the shopkeeper for payment, he said ‘You are our guest, how can we take money from you?’”

“Wherever we went in Pakistan on that tour that happened after 17 years… 2003-2004 it was… there was not even a single place where we didn’t receive lots of love. They used to ask us where we were from in India and we used to tell them we’re from Delhi so they used to say that their relatives used to live in Delhi and is that place or street still there.”

“We used to get tears in our eyes but we were also happy that we were the same like two separated brothers”

I have read lots of good things from Indian players about the people of Pakistan in that 2004 tour. Pakistanis really showed their class in that tour.
