"When they will come to India, we will show them" : Virat Kohli to teammates during New Zealand loss

Christchurch, March 2 (IANS) India skipper Virat Kohli is always in the news, be it for his swashbuckling batting or his on-field antics. And this time round he has been heard telling his teammates that they will show the Kiwis their place when they tour India.

With New Zealand looking comfortable while chasing India''s total on the third morning, the Indian skipper was heard shouting to his teammates: "Jab India mein yeh log aayengey, tab dikha doonga (When they will come to India, we will show them)."

The statement sparked controversey as fans felt it was not a true gesture as a sportsman.

Kohli also had a fiery exchange with a journalist who asked him to tone down his aggression following India''s crushing defeat in the second and final Test at the Hagley Oval.

India lost the Christchurch Test by seven wickets on Monday, thus suffering from their first-ever whitewash under Kohli and in the post-match presser, the Indian skipper was asked about his on-field antics during the match which didn''t go down too well with the 31-year-old cricketer.

Kohli was seen giving an angry send-off to Kiwi batters and animatedly celebrating the fall of wickets during the first two sessions on the second day. On one particular instance, Kohli was even seen using an expletive towards the crowd.

One of the journalists asked Kohli: "Virat, what''s your reaction to your behaviour on the field, swearing at (Kane) Williamson when he got out, swearing at the crowd. As an Indian captain, don''t you think you should set a better example on the field?"

The Indian skipper got riled up with the question and told the reporter: "I am asking you the answer."

"You need to find out exactly what happened and then come up with a better question, I have spoken with the match referee, you cannot come here with half knowledge. Thank you."

This was not the first time that Kohli lost his cool in press conferences after India defeats.

After the first Test as well where India lost by 10 wickets in Wellington, Kohli -- while replying about India''s batting failures -- had said that there are a lot of people who want to get into their head knowing they are a side "who can beat anyone anywhere" by making "too much out of" loss at the Basin Reserve.

In 2018, he had lashed out at a journalist after the 1-4 Test series defeat in England.

‘Jab India mein yeh log aayenge, tab dikha doonga’- Virat Kohli heard saying during New Zealand’s 2nd innings in Christchurch

India lost to New Zealand in the second Test and also lost the two-match series by 2-0. This is also their first series loss in the ICC World Test Championship. While they are topping the points table even after the consecutive losses, the number 1 Test team’s credentials are being questioned as their batsmen failed to counter swing eventually going down meekly.

Even the Indian skipper Virat Kohli had a lean series where he failed to cross 20 in four innings. Apart from his batting failure, his nice behaviour on the tour has been the talking point on social media as well. Though nothing ‘nice’ was on display on the field when the Indian bowlers helped the team make a stunning comeback on the second day of the Test.

While Kohli was seen giving a send-off to his counterpart Kane Williamson, he was also involved in a banter with a section of the crowd at the Hagley Oval. He was also caught gesturing ‘Shut the f**k up’ to the crowd after picking the wicket of one of the New Zealand batsmen.

The Indian batsmen, on the third day, was once again heard saying a rather controversial statement during New Zealand’s second innings when the visitors were defending 131.

Virat Kohli was standing in the slips for the majority of the innings where he was heard saying, “Jab India mein yeh log aatengey, tab dikha doonga (I will show them when they come to India),” according to Indian Express.

What is he going to do? Give them the Delhi treatment many of his fellow countrymen are getting?

HAHA typical. Only play on your home picthes and win so called fake number 1 team.

Is cricket following the WWE model with banters and storylines of revenge and what not? :faf

Should do well at home with host broadcasting so ordinary bowlers like Yadav can get prodigious amount of reverse swing.

As the saying goes... "ghar mein tou _dash_ bhi shaer hota hai"

I’ve mentioned it elsewhere. This is not UFC and I don’t understand why Kohli feels that he is an MMA fighter. Just because his wife is Anoushka does not make him Sultan

Expecting a certain poster to come and support him macho persona and demand Pakistanis to follow his role model

Kohli is having a nightmare in NZ. He is all over thr place. Has to br his worst ever tour evr since he became a star.

Loooool what a loser statement, coward. Needs to stop embarrasing himself on this embarassing tour for him with the bat.

I am a huge Kohli fan, but this was a loser's statement.

He is basically admitting that they are nothing but home track bullies, who are just ranked No.1 because of their domination at home.

With this comment Kohli has actually proved that we are just home bullies and our win in Australia was just a fluke. Expect another series loss in Australia next time. One of the worst captain to have in Press Conferences after losing a series. :inti

You guys need to calm down every cap is not kane and we have seen fair share of Bongyan from others and our Captains kohli is no different he is a champion will be a champion
You guys need to give him some slack he wasn't talking it seriously until 2nd test when it was out of his hands

He had lost his fire for Over a year now maybe this series was what was needed to give him ignition you are definitely going to see fired up kohli now

childish throwing his toys out the pram, surprised he didn't say he is going to ask BCCI to isolate NZ cricket going forward.

Lol, the true character of a sportsman is tested in defeat and Kohli is showing his true colors under adversity and pomp.

Didn't Indian team say the same thing in some earlier away tours? It's not just about winning or losing. It's also about how you react to it. Give credit to other team for playing better cricket irrespective of pitch and move on.

I think Rohit Sharma said it last time? :inti

I get that he’s a fiery competitor, but he really needs better composure during times of defeat in the press.

Came here to say this.

Nailed it.

Kohli comes across as a loser and a spoilt child. He takes the game way to seriously and personally. I am surprised that opponents have never exploited this i.e. Australia, South Africa, England, for the most part he has been a world class consistent performer but his antics in the past and now will backfire during rough patches.

People who saw Ponting in his prime from 1999 to 2008 will not believe his massive decline from 2009 to 2012, i believe he was so bad that he was averaging below 40 in his final 3-4 years in international cricket which is a huge drop down for a guy who used to consistently average 55-60 on a year to year basis in his prime. Kohli is only human and is not immune to the inevitable decline and drop in performances that most sportsmen go through. His volume of Cricket is also massive and can easily lead him to age out way faster than other players.

They don’t exploit it because they risk losing lucrative deals in India.

Is it not surprising that a guy like him has zero enemies in the world’s playing roster? They seem to get on with him knowing full well that he is a unlikeable person

Kohli's a passionate guy and wears his hear on his sleeve but this comment does remind me of a similar statement after a recent football match in Madrid. :klopp

This is so childish. Imagine Kohli at the receiving end instead of Williamson at wc19 final. Kane and Kohli are at the opposite ends in terms of maturity.

That's actually pretty dumb. Why would you publicly admit that you are a home bully. :))

.....while refusing to play against the other team - Pakistan - which is used to such conditions.

Pathetic. Only knows how to win when factors are in his favour. Take away BCCI money and India are a nothing team, Kohli has proved it today.

Wonder if captaincy is effecting his batting - either way Rohit is a much better captain.

Didnt expect this from Kohli. Disappointing stuff. This goes on to show serious mental disintegration. Cowardly statements. Lets see how Kohli recovers from this or it will be the start of his downfall.

"Shocked By All This Talk": Former Pakistan Captain Comes To Virat Kohli's Defence
Virat Kohli struggled for runs during the Test series in New Zealand and found support from a surprise source.

Virat Kohli had a torrid time in the just-concluded Test series in New Zealand.

The Indian team, ranked number one in the world and the current table-toppers The Indian captain, the No.2-ranked batsman in Tests, had an unusually lean series with the bat, managing scores of 2, 19, 3 and 14 at an average of 9.50. After his poor showing with the bat, Virat Kohli found support from an unlikely source -- former Pakistan captain Inzamam-ul Haq.

"In India, there has been a lot of talk about Virat Kohli because he hasn't done too well in his last 11-12 innings. Some people are talking about his technique.

I am shocked by all this talk. One person has scored 70 centuries in international cricket and despite that people are questioning his technique," Inzamam said on YouTube channel 'The Match Winner'.

"I am saying as a cricketer, that every player has a series, has a year where even if he is doing everything right, things don't go his way. He can't score every day, in every match or every series or every year. What bowlers are playing just to be hit by Kohli? This doesn't happen with any player.

"My advice to Kohli is that there is no need to be worried. This happens to everyone. There is no business in the world that only sees profits, there are losses as well. He doesn't need to change his technique," said the former Pakistan skipper.

"We were completely outplayed in this series, and obviously did not play the kind of cricket that we do play as a team," Kohli said.

"We were not positive enough, we were not brave enough."
New Zealand are now unbeaten in their last 13 home Tests, winning nine of them, and in the past decade their record as hosts is played 39, won 20, drawn 13 and lost five.

India started the day at 90 for six and were all out for 124, before New Zealand chased down the required 132 to win for the loss of three wickets in 36 overs.

Who in their right mind would compare him as a captain to Imran Khan

Poor form from Kohli. It screams inferiority complex. A true leader would stay dignified in defeat and use it as motivation to succeed next time.

Kohli's work ethic and quality as a player is admirable but my god, he can come across as a spoilt kid at times. There goes the theory his wife has helped mature him.

India is a good team but Indian media and cricketing fraternity hyped it to an all time great team.this is not the case.New Zealand inflicted heavy defeat on India because New Zealander plaers were mentally stronger.India lost because its players were mentally weak.Yes the ball was moving around but it was possible to make decent scores.Kohli's statements and behaviour on the field shows that this series was a nightmare for Indian players. The team fell apart due to lackof confidence and mental clarity. The players were scared of getting out hence they played poor shots and did get out.

just an irrational and emotional response after getting riled up by the media.

i think the main reason india lost was that kohli and all the bowlers were really exhausted after non stop cricket for 4 months straight.
rishabh pant was garbage with the bat and india also lacked an all rounder like de grandhomme

they needed more rest to perform to their capability.

becoming mature and somehow transforming into a better person after marriage is a desi myth

Nothing surprising.
He completely losses it under pressure be it captaincy or batting.

Kohli has such a confrontational personality that if he (or his team) fails, he can expect lots of heat. It is why it is better for him to avoid media for a few weeks. He is digging his hole deeper by saying inflammatory things.

this is pretty much the truth.

Lmao ghar ka Kohli, loving this bashing by the Kiwis but attitude aside Kohli is still on par (just about) with Smith in red ball & still the best in white ball cricket , i though he had matured but still not a humlbe dude

Lmao what a loser this guy is turning out to be.

All chummy with Kane throughout the series once they get hammered his true self shows.

That's a proper PR disaster.

What in the world was Kohli thinking :))

He's my favorite batsman so its actually kinda embarrassing tbh.

Usually it's against England, Aus or SA when there's controversy and a lot of sledging we've done nothing other than whip their *****.

On the other side, this is how captain should be, hurting when get defeated so that they can rise up and deliver. For them victory is the only thing that is important, this is how competitive sports should be..But surely he is going Warner's way, which is not an effective way. He could have chosen a better way to show his aggression by performing.

And then we had Misbah, so graceful even at times when he was winning, it was like we have lost. No fire to lift the team.

Childish thing to say if he really said it. The whole thing including the way he carried on after getting the 3 wickets in the last innings. This is why I say SRT is the greatest Indian and greatest all time batsmen, he was perfect on and off the field. I can't believe people here was saying Kohl was better than SRT...

exactly. kohli is a fighter. A true warrior. He will learn from.this.

Kohli after losing the 2023 WC semi final to England -

" When they'll come to India for the all important Paytm odi trophy , we'll show them. "

:shh

Lmao what a loser this guy is turning out to be.

All chummy with Kane throughout the series once they get hammered his true self shows.

His chumminess with the Aussies and the top-rated players is born out of the desire to be like them. It's no secret that he wants to emulate the Aussie way of playing cricket. From his on-field behavior to his pressers, he tries way too hard to not come across as a traditional Indian cricket cricketer.

All these gimmicks of being friends with the Aussies (Maxwell, Warner etc) and now this with Kane are an attempt to portray himself as one of them.

It's so desperate.

Kohli's misery continues on this NZ tour.....

If he really said this, he deserves all the brickbats coming his way. Even when we were really poor on our away tours in '90s, never any of our senior cricketers ever said something to this effect.

But our current generation of cricketers is bit special in this regard.

His dictatorship is pushing India years back.

Makes you really appreciate someone like Dhoni who actually led Indian cricket exceptionally well and had the results.

Kohli will never touch an inch of what Dhoni did for Indian cricket no matter how hard he tries, he just doesn't have the personality or leadership to do so. He's got more Ls coming in Aus and then then the big one with the WC at home. He will be forced out because he isn't the type to relinquish captaincy.
